Rate this book
It’s one thing to read about witches; it’s another thing to discover you are one.

When Glasgow law student David Hunter survives a mysterious attack, he discovers he's a descendant of a long line of witches known as Dream Dancers. Thrust into a hidden world of magic, government conspiracies, and perilous quests, David must master his newfound abilities to protect the mystical Akashic Records—the key to humanity's past, present, and future. Alongside the fiery Jessica Campbell, wise Aunt Gen, and the underworld creature Terence, they face malevolent forces aiming to manipulate reality.

Their adversary is the sinister media mogul Alicia Collins and her clandestine organization, which seeks to drain the world's energy and control the masses through manipulation and deceit. With the British and American governments entangled in conspiracy, the Witches of Scotland are the last line of defence against a global catastrophe known as "The Big Reset." As prophecies unfold and the threat of the Akashic Records being destroyed looms large, alliances are tested, secrets are unveiled, and the ultimate battle between good and evil reaches its climax.

Set in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and brimming with themes of self-discovery, media manipulation, and the quest for belonging, this complete 8-book series offers a mesmerising journey that blurs the lines between myth and reality. Follow David's transformation from an ordinary student to a powerful witch in a gripping narrative filled with fast-paced action, complex characters, and a unique blend of magickal realism and conspiracy thriller.

Whether you're a fan of supernatural thrillers, urban fantasy, or stories of personal transformation, The Witches of Scotland will captivate you from beginning to end.

Quite gripping

Probably young adult audience would enjoy the most, but I'm 60. And still found it a good read. I will probably look into buying the next series (when I actually finish all the books I still have outstanding in my kindlr)

Too good to put down!

This is the second time I've read this series, first time I read them as they were released and this time all in one sitting.
The characters are so true and authentic you feel like you could bump into them in a pub. The story lines are really thought provoking and makes me want to research the subject more.
Seriously if you want an easy read, that sucks you into the world of magic and lucid dreams then don't miss this series.
I'm now off to read the Edinburgh Files again... enjoy

Excellent on so many levels. Providing indirect and direct guidance, life lessons and pulling together the disparate connections between what we perceive as reality and the unseen or forgotten side of our universe.

This series began a bit slow and if I hadn't purchased the 8-book audio I'm not sure I would have continued but I'm glad I did. The characters came to life, slowly, but the story really had you cheering them on. I plan on reading the next series but will wait till it's all out. I do not enjoy a huge cliffhanger when reading so if that is you as well then know that each book ends with one. Luckily they are all out so you don't have to wait. I listened and the narrator was phenomenal. Hope you enjoy them.

A very different style of Urban Fantasy.

There has been thousands of reviews for the Witches of Scotland and they were right. The best news was I bought this eight book offer for a small amount and then purchased the audio version. Brilliant, nearly thirty hours of absorbing and at times intellectually challenging as the spiritual side of enlightenment was dealt with. By this series cheap and then get the audible version, throughly recommend, it lasts hours, excellent.

Nicely done!

I loved seeing David's growth through the series, while keeping the wit that makes him likeable. And the nod to M Anderle did not go unnoticed.

This story was okay. I guess I was expecting more - very slow going and it wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be.

A Magical World of High Highs, Low Lows, and Lingering Questions

Steven Aitchison’s The Witches of Scotland series is nothing if not ambitious. Across eight books, he builds a sprawling magical world filled with prophecies, betrayals, crystal bonds, and complicated relationships. For readers who stick with it, the journey is enthralling, though often uneven with some truly standout moments of storytelling mixed with frustrating character arcs and unanswered questions.

From the start, David is an engaging lead. His growth as a character, his bond with Terence (the pug-like beaked dragon companion who steals every scene), and the revelations about his lineage and destiny provide a backbone to the series. Books One and Two are strong introductions, drawing readers in with great pacing and a sense of discovery. Book Three brings some of the series’ best balance of action and heart, while Book Four slows down with heavy world-building and scattered perspectives that often bog down momentum.

One of the recurring frustrations throughout the series is Jessica. Time and again, she centers herself in moments that should have belonged to David, turning scenes about his growth, his crystal discoveries, or even climactic battles into her own melodrama. While Book Seven finally shows her starting to grow into adulthood at the academy, her superiority complex compared to David remains comical at best and exhausting at worst.

Alicia, meanwhile, is perhaps the series’ most disappointing arc. Introduced as a powerful and nuanced figure, she devolves into a caricature whose motivations feel hollow. By Book Eight, her pursuit of dismantling the patriarchy contradicts itself so thoroughly that she ends up unconvincing both as a villain and as a potential redemption story. Her arc just disappoints and saddens the lake of use in potential for good.

“She would let whatever happened happen and took no part in the outcome…”

Lord Fraser, on the other hand, is one of Aitchison’s most effective villains a colonizer who exploits people as commodities, using human lives as capital for his own experiments. His greed and corruption embody the worst of power, and it’s hard not to loathe him every time he appears on the page. His arc has catharsis at the end.

The pacing of the series is uneven. Some books, like Three and Five, find a great rhythm, while others (Four and Seven especially) get lost in sprawling POV shifts, distracting lists of study materials and spells, or abrupt bursts of chaotic action. By Book Eight, the climax feels both rushed and overstuffed: storylines converge in the final chapters, but the lack of emotional buildup leaves important resolutions, like David’s relationship with his parents, feeling flat and unfinished.

Still, there’s so much to love here. Terence’s loyalty and humor bring warmth. I hope we get to see more of him in the future. Genevieve’s sharp, maternal energy provides grounding and balance. And Aitchison’s ability to surprise readers with unexpected turns keeps the series palatable.

Taken as a whole, The Witches of Scotland (Books 1–8) is captivating but flawed. I do recommend it as enjoyable reading aside from the pains in the ass. It blends moments of brilliance with stretches of muddled storytelling, offering a world that feels alive but characters that don’t always evolve in satisfying ways. For readers willing to commit to the full journey, it’s a ride…but one that will likely leave you with as many questions as answers. I’ll give it a 4.3 if you’re wanting a prolonged series with good amount of magic but don’t be surprised with the flaws.

This author seems like such a nice person. I really hated to give this series 3 stars... honestly I would have given it 2 if I didn't feel so bad about it.
I made the mistake of downloading the whole series. Had I only downloaded the first book I wouldn't have downloaded the rest. The story had a lot of potential. It's a good storyline. But the writing left a lot to be desired. I felt like I was reading a 9th grade writing assignment. The dialogue felt choppy and blocky. There was a lot of redundancy. He definitely doesn't know how to write women. Things that were said could have been left out or conveyed with a look. At times it was painful to get through the dialogue. The descriptions of the planes were fairly good. I was able to visualize what he was getting at. The characters on the other hand need a lot of work. Like I said, he can't write women. A decent editor would have been able to delete or restructure a lot of issues with the book. The last book in the series was the only one I kind of enjoyed, even then a lot of the dialogue was so cringe worthy it made it difficult to get through. I won't be recommending this one to anyone.
Like I said in the beginning I feel really bad about giving such a horrible review. It's rare that I give a bad review. The author seems like such a nice and truly genuine person. The letters in the beginning/end of the books came from the heart. I hope he finds himself a decent editor if he writes in the future.

I enjoyed these books. The concepts and ideas are interesting and dynamic. The author is clearly doing some significant mystery schools learning, and is writing about his experiences and then weaving that into a cool fiction story.
The writing in the first couple of books is a bit clunky and definitely improved as the books continued. Because I listen to the books all at once the starting and stopping at the book ends didn’t bother me. If I had been reading them separately, it would’ve been more frustrating as the books generally ended very abruptly and then started again without a lot of context.
It’s fun to see the author learning and grow as he continues to write more and more.

It’s okay. Feels rushed and like a big huge lecture about energy. For example at the end there’s a summery of all chapters in a book, about 22, why?????? Then MC starts picking a chapter and begins reading the text again why???? You’ve been given a ton of information which the characters immediately understand and can use. That’s unbelievable. Even the last battle doesn’t really feels like it’s what we’ve been leading up to. Too bad cause it could’ve been nice. Another example. After being parted of his parents David gets to meet them again and it’s like he just meets a random stranger for the first time. No depth into the emotions.

Headline: Fantastic concept, but the execution fell a bit flat.

I was really drawn in by the premise of The Witches of Scotland series. The world-building and the magic system are definitely the highlights here—they felt fresh and kept me curious enough to finish the entire 8-book bundle.

However, I struggled with the delivery. The writing style felt a bit basic and, at times, clunky, which made it hard to stay fully immersed in the emotional stakes. While the plot had potential, the development felt a bit surface-level for a series of this length. It’s an enjoyable, easy read if you love the setting, but I wish the prose had more depth to match the great ideas.

OMG!!!!

Was recommended this series by my bestie,
I became a wee bit obsessed and binge read the entire series.
There is a fine balance where real life and fiction merge, and Steven P Aitchison has hit it perfectly
I live within close proximity to where the series is he has managed to weave a believable tale of magick, life, love, friendships, and realism
Characters are believable, and I have a feeling they will stay in my consciousness.......
All I can say without hesitation is READ these books!!!!
Meanwhile, I'm away to download the next series

I'm not even sure what to say... They really weren't good. The author tried to sound clever and deeply spiritual, when it's just came out as a bunch of convoluted woowoo. Too bad I bought the 8 book bundle on Audible, and I'm a glutton for punishment. At least it was on sale... Unfortunately, I can't leave a book unfinished, even if it's terrible. So, I slogged through this ridiculous mess, so you don't have to.
Only to find out there's MORE books? UGH, no more for me, thanks

A generally cool idea for the a magical world. But these books were hard to get through. So much dialogue that often felt redundant and sophomoric. An unfortunate master class in telling, not showing. Also, the female characters were clearly women written by a man. Their motivations and internal dialogue felt very unrealistic.

very fun and uplifting story

I enjoyed the story and the perspective of Scotland as a backdrop. I am an American with Scottish heritage and have always felt an affinity with witches and stories about them.
I appreciate your artful way of bringing in esoteric teachings into the story.

Remarkable Story

This is a very interesting take on the principles of magick. The characters were believable and it was developed slow enough for anyone to enjoy. However, the author was wordy and a bit technical in his explanations. I recommend this to anyone who has a good vocabulary.

An enjoyable read full of magic and lore

I enjoyed this series of books as it's magic elements are not your usual magic trope. The premise is interesting and I didn't feel the mid series drag that you sometimes feel in a series of books. I don't want to post any spoilers but I do hope we get to meet Terrance again. I look forward to reading more either of Scotland books.

Telling

I couldn't get past the first page and a half. I felt like I was being told a story instead of being shown. Especially when in the first page of it, someone walking into somewhere being described as floating. Really?

A Great Story Woven Through Today's Reality

This is a great story woven through the fabric of today's reality. It potrays history and current times in an unconventional way to show how ALL life is intertwined. No one life is totally separate from all other living entities.
