The Practical Marketer by Saurabh Bajaj is a straightforward guide aimed at helping marketers, especially in the consumer product space, master key marketing strategies. Drawing from his vast experience, Bajaj breaks down complex ideas into simple, practical concepts, making the book suitable for both newcomers and seasoned professionals.

One of the book’s major strengths is its focus on practical advice. Bajaj offers clear, step-by-step strategies that can be used in real-world situations, making the content immediately applicable. Instead of diving deep into abstract theories, the book provides actionable insights that marketers can easily implement.

Bajaj is also great at simplifying complex marketing jargon. He explains essential topics like consumer behavior, product positioning, and market analysis in an easy-to-understand way, ensuring readers gain valuable insights without feeling overwhelmed. This makes it accessible to those without a formal marketing background while still being useful for experts.

A central theme in the book is understanding the consumer. Bajaj emphasizes the importance of knowing what drives customer behavior and how to meet their needs. This customer-first approach ensures that marketers create campaigns and products that resonate with their audience, leading to more effective marketing strategies.

To make these lessons more relatable, Bajaj includes real-life examples and case studies. These examples help illustrate how the strategies can be applied in real business situations, making the book even more practical.

In addition to its focus on consumer behavior, the book covers a broad range of marketing topics such as product development, branding, pricing strategies, and promotional tactics. This variety makes it a comprehensive toolkit for marketers.

The Practical Marketer is an excellent resource for anyone looking to improve their marketing skills, offering clear, actionable insights and a deep understanding of consumer behavior. With real-life examples and easy-to-follow guidance, it’s a must-read for marketers who want to build successful, customer-centric strategies.

-Marketing mantras from the world of Cadbury and other global brands-
Review of 'The Practical Marketer'

I've a soft corner for non-fic books that chronicle the stories behind the making of a brand, a company or an organization. While The Practical Marketer isn't strictly a story-backed group, it does carry a handful of interesting anecdotes behind the genesis of some of the most popular advertising campaigns of the brand you see daily in the supermarket isles and on TV in your living room.

Saurabh Bajaj is a product of IIM Indore. Having observed and worked closely with the products like Coca Cola, Cadbury and Britannia, he has now distilled his years of experience and skill into this book. The book charts not only the stories but also carries various tips on consumer product marketing in both, detailed format as well as in concised bullet points.

I loved the informative snippets strewn across the book like this- 'While a salesperson's job is to make sure that the stock is always within the reach of the customer, a marketer's job is to increase brand offtakes, which is the actual movement of the product off the shelf.'
I definitely enjoyed learning about the differentiation of marketing based upon the fact if the brand being promoted is from a 'need' category like grocery and 'want' category like vanity products and sweets. Learning about words like grammage and SKU was fun.

Bajaj shares many anecdotes in the book. Prominent are the stories where he convinced the brand to not promote Cadbury gems just as a kids brand. Also, as a manager, he reduced the number of SKUs (Stock Keeping Unit) of Cadbury Celebrations from 26 to merely 6 thereby reducing the inventory cost of different packs and consequently doubling the Cadbury gifting business. There are many such stories written about in the book.

Bajaj also shares in detail about the concepts like Brand Ladder, Stage Gate Process, Surrogate marketing (marketing soda with the same name as the alcohol), #stopthebeautytest by Dove, and #sharetheload by Ariel.

Bajaj has tried to keep the book as jargon free as possible so even a layperson who's not from the marketing background can understand it. That being said, I think it's more of a treatise on marketing and the concerned students and newbies will definitely have a lot of takeaway from The Practical Marketer.

Marketing... every person who knows me personally would know how much I love this subject.
I have always been curious to know and learn how marketing principles, theories, and concepts are implemented in the industry. That led to me networking with marketers and understanding the subject at a new level. It's just that, this time, I was reading a book instead of meeting Saurabh Bajaj in person.

My love for marketing made me pick this book, and it was worth the read. Every marketing enthusiast would love to understand how a marketer brainstorms ideas and develops marketing plans. Therefore, this book gave an insight into the author's work experience with some big brands. The author has tastefully picked up the most relevant concepts that a marketer should know and supported them with case studies and examples that can help better understand how to implement them. Since I knew most concepts, I was more interested in reading the examples and case studies.

So many things in this book give marketers a clear idea of various marketing jargon, terms, and concepts. The clients may randomly use some term, not knowing what it means, creating chaos when the marketers get down to doing their work. Terms like 'surrogate marketing,' consumer engagement,' 'consumer portrait,' and so many more terms and concepts are beautifully explained by the author. I believe this book is a practical marketing manual for new-age marketers; it blends traditional marketing approaches with new-age digital approaches in the right proportion. Understanding what marketing was before and how it is today is integral for all marketers as their clients come from different generations that were exposed to different types of marketing.

This book is an apt and enjoyable read for all those interested in learning more about marketing or are keen on making their career in this field. I feel entrepreneurs should read this book too, because they are the ones who want everything fast-tracked and under-value the power of consumer insights and a good marketing plan. Marketers might come across a situation where they want to share their input and help create effective marketing plans, but some entrepreneurs and businesses are quick to dismiss them.

Book Review: The Practical Marketerby Saurabh Bajaj

In The Practical Marketer, Saurabh Bajaj provides readers with a behind-the-scenes look into the world of marketing, offering a hands-on approach to understanding how some of the most iconic ad campaigns, such as Coca Cola's ‘Thanda Matlab Coca Cola’ and Cadbury Celebrations' ‘Toh Iss Diwali Aap Kise Khush Karenge?’, were crafted. Drawing on over two decades of experience in sales and marketing, Bajaj gives readers an insider's perspective on the intricate process of brand building, making this book invaluable for both aspiring marketers and seasoned professionals.

The strength of the book lies in its practical insights into key marketing concepts such as consumer behavior, brand strategy, and campaign delivery. Bajaj doesn't simply discuss theory—he supplements his teachings with real-world examples from his career, providing readers with rich case studies of successful campaigns he has been involved in. This gives the reader a well-rounded understanding of how these concepts play out in practice, making the book especially relevant in today’s competitive market.

Bajaj’s writing style is approachable, and his enthusiasm for marketing shines through, making complex concepts easy to grasp. He also delves into crucial topics like brand architecture and international market expansion, making it a comprehensive guide for marketers aiming to take their brands to the next level.

Overall, The Practical Marketer stands out as a must-read for anyone in the marketing field, whether you're looking to build a brand from scratch or elevate an existing one. ‘Thanda Matlab Coca Cola’ or ‘Britannia Khao World Cup Jao’ for me are not just brand campaigns, these are part of core childhood memories. These campaigns not only occupied the mind space but also had a strong emotional connection with us. Any marketing book will teach you the first principles, differentiating marketing and selling as well as how both involve an entirely different perspective. A key component of marketing is ‘brand management’ and ‘The Practical Marketer’ (authored by Saurabh Bajaj and published by Jaico Publishing House) gives important insights into the core concept of brand management, roles and responsibilities of brand managers as well as the entire idea of creating a strong brand vision.

Saurabh, an alum of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Indore has been working for the past 20 years in the domain of sales and marketing and is an authority on the subject matter. His insights on understanding consumers, their behaviour and strategizing are not only backed by theory explained in simple terms, but he also uses real-life case studies to contextualize things better.

Specific chapters talk about a step-by-step guide to the essentials of brand strategy, understanding of consumers, brand activation, marketing mix building and the different platforms and channels of marketing. In business schools globally, the textbook written by Kotler is considered an authority and Saurabh builds on to some of the important concepts that Kotler’s book deals with and adds his creative insights and practical examples, making the complex content accessible to everyone.

The book can also be a good source of acquiring and up-skilling in the subject of marketing and can be used by students, academics and even professionals. For professionals working in other functions, this book will offer important insights to facilitate cross-functional learning in the domain of marketing.

Right from the start, it hooks you with relatable, real-world examples of iconic Indian ad campaigns like ‘Thanda Matlab Coca Cola’ and Cadbury's ‘Toh Iss Diwali Aap Kise Khush Karenge?’—ads we’ve all enjoyed but rarely think about in terms of the strategy and creativity behind them.

Saurabh Bajaj, with over two decades of hands-on experience in marketing, takes you behind the scenes, revealing the intricate layers of brand building and consumer behavior. He doesn’t just discuss theories; he gives you real, actionable insights drawn from his own experience, which makes this book a refreshing departure from the usual business jargon. You feel like you're getting insider knowledge from someone who’s lived and breathed marketing, making it both accessible and incredibly useful.

Ad campaigns such as "Thanda Matlab Coca Cola" and "Britannia Khao World Cup Jao" are not merely commercials; they are deeply ingrained in childhood recollections, establishing enduring emotional bonds. This book is one of well written, researched and how marketing is done. Marketing require discipline, and most of the acclaimed literature and case studies on the subject are from foreign countries. Although, those marketing books provide fascinating stories and insights, but indian marketing is totally different ball game.

Behind the iconic ad campaigns catchy lines, taglines and slogans of some big brands there are consumer behaviour insights, build a brand strategy, how to deliver winning products and many more things are involved

Most business biographies, though engaging, but ended in the most mundane and accidental decisions.
Because Marketing books in India are written by Academic, with very less practical exposure to floor test of corporate industry. The brands brain child and creative outlook to reach customer is biggest challenge in India without hurting the sentiments of community, gender and without a biased toward any individual.

But here in this book author , weaving in references to well-known brands working in India. This approach makes the content not just relatable but also thoroughly understandable.

Whole aspects of this book is its focus on the nature of marketing , as he wrote an entire section to illustrate how marketing requires cross-functional collaboration with sales, market research, marketing agencies, the creative industry , campaign ads, promotions , digital marketing, celeb marketing, and many more things that required to build successful brands.

Sudhir Sitapati’s The CEO Factory is one of the rare outliers that comes to mind, notably for its solid section on marketing. It does not, however, completely avoid the controversy surrounding HUL's product integrity, which he adamantly maintains.

Even the most interesting company histories frequently make the mistake of explaining even the most insignificant and unintentional choices in retrospect.

Also, the language is simple to read.
