J.G. Debs has done an excellent job of capturing the fear and uncertainty of someone at a crossroads in life. After her abusive father kicks her out, she finds temporary shelter in the basement of her friend’s house. With hopes of setting her future on a path to success, she follows her brother and joins the Air Force. Debs’s memoir becomes fascinating as she details her conflicted emotions of self-doubt versus her need to strive forward. She pushes through the stress and tension of training in order to become an Air Traffic Controller. Even after she is deployed and her fears of dying amplify, she summons a great inner-drive to keep going. Most revealing is how she openly confesses her fears and the vulnerability of not knowing if she can make it. One of the strongest sections of the book deals with Debs sharing her struggles to retain normalcy and reintegrate after coming home from her time overseas. Overall, the narrative stands out as a testament of Debs’s resilience and her refusal to allow adverse circumstances, difficult decisions, or bad relationships to derail her. The solid writing and authentic dialogue make for smooth reading. Debs has written an engaging memoir that casts light on a challenging stretch of her life that helped shape who she is and the future she fought hard to attain.

This book is so well written and absorbing in its emotional details. I absolutely loved the descriptions of basic training and the heart it takes to get through it. Having 2 sons who joined the military at a young age, I was humbled by the life experiences the author so clearly described. LOVED IT!

I loved this book! I couldn't put it down! The imagery and storyline kept me reading. I wanted to know what the main character Jen was going to do with the choices that came her way. This is a really good book for anyone who has wanted to strive for independence and tried to figure out their life path in a time when 9/11 happened and our young people were joining the military.

Mrs. Deb's has an interesting story view, through her eyes as a teen she looked towards the future of what her life was going to be, in which many young individuals do. Her circumstances of how she had to make decisions would effect her for the rest of her life. She also had issues believing in herself, thinking negatively, because of a life she came from. Because of challenges she had, she did not think she would make me. Many young individuals do not know where they are going or how they are going to get where they want to be. There are even some that get there and realize it is not for them. In this memoir, the author explains her feelings throughout the whole process of her obstacles and challenges that she had to face.
