Rate this book
The lights dim, the film projector whirs...and blood splatters the side of your face! Don't worry, it's just corn syrup. Probably...

Welcome to Saturday Fright at the Movies, where the projector is stuck on mayhem and thirteen B-movie tales are lurching off the screen. In the flickering light of this hallowed multiplex, you'll witness outrageous creature features and gritty found footage, nostalgic popcorn slashers and haunted VHS tapes. Run screaming down the aisles with intergalactic zombie unicorns, tentacled rock-gods, brat-packs of unearthly trick-or-treaters, a goo-monster with an existential crisis, and one starry-eyed coroner as he meets-and-greets his favorite masked maniac. Think you have the popcorn to survive the fright? Then grab your machete and your 3D glasses, because at this neon horror fest, the special effects are gory, the monsters are relentless, and the final girls have studied all the classics.

This was my first book by Amanda Cecelia Lang and she created an amazing collection here!

Thirteen stories that range from serial killers, to ghosts, to killer unicorns, to science experiments, etc. There is a huge variety of horror here and it won't let you down!

It's very clear that the author is a huge fan of horror films and I was super impressed on her knowledge of the genre. As always, with short story collections, I will tell you the ones that were stand-outs to me.

"Latchkey" We follow a boy who lives in a house where the previous owners had to move because their kid disappeared, as he learns the secrets of the home, he may disappear as well...

This was such a unique and fun ride, I loved the mystery, the characters, and the feel of always wanting to enter your favorite cartoon as a kid!

"Zombie Unicorns from Galaxy 13" We follow a teenager who has a love of horror movies, who goes to a drive-thru in hopes of watching a sequel to her favorite franchise, until she is approached by something impossible...

This was another crazy, unique and fun story! Our main character is such a bad-ass, and the way it's written from her POV makes it more intriguing. No spoilers but Wyn was also such a great character!

"Station 99" We follow a teenager who finds his brother's old TV, but the television has a mind of its own...

This is your classic "Poltergeist" story with a twist, there is a lot of mystery and it kept me engaged all the way through. I loved the characters but it left me wanting more in the end.

"Attack of Melvin" This one was probably my favorite. If you have ever seen the classic and original films, "Frankenstein", "The Wolf Man", "The Mummy", "The Invisible Man", and "The Blob", then you will love this because it is ALL of that in one! It's a revenge story about a young scientist trying to find his grandfather and using his experiment to help him..

I'm a huge fan of the golden age of horror (1920s-1940s) and this tale absolutely struck a home run for me! I couldn't help but smile all the way through because it transformed me into the first age that started the genre!

"Ashes Upon Ashes Upon Ashes" This one was definitely the most disturbing of the collection, we follow a woman going back to her home to confront her family's secret...

I loved the way it was told because of our main character's POV of viewing old films that easily pulled the story along. The more you read, the more you realize why she had every right to leave, and you root for her to set things straight. There is definitely an "extreme horror" side to this but I don't wanna spoil anything.

"The Clover Cafe" We follow a woman who survives an attack on her group of friends, she kills the attacker, and finds herself at a cafe with other survivors...

I absolutely loved the meta side of this story, because it asks the question, "where does the final girl go at the end of a horror movie after staying alive?"

It's super interesting, with amazing characters, and I couldn't put the book down once I started this story. It goes back and forth between the present and past with our main character and her sister that does a great job of connecting in the end.

I will keep the rest of the stories a surprise!

If you are a horror fan, in any way, you do NOT want to sleep on this one. There are so many references to the genre, and the author really does know her stuff!

4/5

I received this book from Booksirens, and I am more than happy to review this for them and for the author!

A love letter to both the genre and its fans. I was delighted at the broad range of subjects, each handled expertly, and the wonderful variation in tone from one story to the next. This book needs to be on everyone's TBR list.

Saturday Fright at the Movies is a true love letter to the horror genre.

Each of these 13 tales delves into a different sub-genre, yet each story maintains Lang's distinctive style. Reading this felt like having a long, passionate conversation with a friend about “What’s your favourite scary movie?”

Each short story stands as a testament to Lang’s admiration for the genre, blending classic horror themes with their own storytelling style. The pacing is spot-on.

A must-read for fans of horror who are looking for that nostalgic feel in a new story.

Like any short story collection, some stories worked better for me than others, that being said this is perhaps the most consistent I have hit in terms of quality of writing and my enjoyment of them. I rated each story and figured out the average score before rounding to the nearest star rating.

Two things really stood out.First was the clear love of the horror genre, especially the 80s/90s, and secondly how impressively varied the style of writing varied from tale to tale, with different perspectives and narrative framings used throughout. Leading to stories that swing at so many sub-genres from cosmic horror to campy 80's Neon creature feature, grindhouse, slasher and psychological, this runs the full gambit and does it well.

My personal Highlights:

Zombie Unicorns From Galaxy 13: A neon infused ode to 80s camp horror cinema

Medusa with the Heads of Mean: A dark tale that feels like greek myth and Frankenstein had a baby told pretty much entirely through emails,CCTV footage and and new reports.

In summary, I feel there is certainly something here for pretty much every type of horror fan in here, and this is the most enjoyment I have had from short story collection in a long time.

Every good author must have a hook. Something to catch the reader and lure them further in until it’s impossible to escape. I’ll be honest, for me, it was the Introduction. As a child of the 80’s, I was a horror junkie and it seems, so was Amanda Lang. The way she weaves her introduction with the movies she loved growing up mixed with the current horror genre, it was like looking into a mirror. Or a club you didn’t know you belonged to. It was the hook with the biggest juiciest worm on it that pulled me into the rest of her book.
Thirteen stories, because of course thirteen stories of the grittiest, most nostalgic horror stories I’ve read in a while. Stranger Things, you have competition.
Writing thirteen stories, of course there is going to be one or two that don’t catch your attention or aren’t to your taste but in this collection, I only found one. There were so many more that I fell in love with. For example, Melvin. I love you Melvin with your little globby body and your 50’s slang. That entire short story just made me smile and reminds us all that sometimes the monsters walk on two feet and lead the mobs instead of blubbing along.
Out of the collect there were two stories that I can absolutely say are my favorites, “Medusa with the heads of Men” which is about a macabre form of female empowerment in a post #MeToo era. In fact, this was the perfect story to put right after “Salting the Meat” (trust me, just read them), and “The Clover Café” which is the perfect Final Girl story. I do love a good Final Girl and this expansion on the trope is chef’s kiss.
All of these stories took me back to episodes of “Are You Afraid of the Dark” and “Tales from the Darkside”. Lang is a master storyteller, able to weave in the creepy and the macabre with the perfect amount of 80’s slasher horror. This is going to be my new go-to Halloween reading.
I’m giving this collection full marks, five out of five stars. And an extra star for the glossary, a full list of trigger warnings (thank you for that) and the list of all the horror movies, shows, podcasts she grew up on or engages in. Also, for putting Friday the 13th The Series on the list.

I have already spoken ad nauseam in other reviews, regarding my long time enjoyment of Short Story Collections, and the they showcase an authors talent. Suffice it to say that SATURDAY FRIGHT AT THE MOVIES is an exceptional example of what I love about this medium. The author makes it very clear that this collection, indeed her writing as a whole, had fruitful seeds of inspiration from the many trips to Video Stores and theaters growing up. The stories that Lang has gathered together in this collection, are in diverse and varied as the Cover art of the VHS boxes many of us remember browsing years past. More importantly, Saturday Fright showcases a strong range and flexibility in Lang's narrative style. Yes, these stories harken back to the horror films over past decades, beyond this there is a current of Feminine Strength and Rage. This not only serves as a counterpoint and commentary to the objectification and patriarchal sexism in horror, it's a celebration and feral howl at the moon. The cover art for this volume sets the mood perfectly.
Last of all, I was into the of the first stories when I realized it seemed familiar. I realized quickly that this was a story I had heard adapted on the NOSLEEP PODCAST, a very happy surprise.
This book is out now, buy a ticket to a front row seat, maybe consider requesting your local library buy a copy too.

Lang has really captured the style of the fright and slasher movies. Did I love them all?… no, but did I enjoy them all?… yes, 100%. I mean this book even had zombie unicorns. How cool is that? Plus a great throw back to choose your own adventure.

I've never been a massive fan of slasher films, I find them too predictable to enjoy fully. However, I do miss that feeling of watching a really good horror film for the first time and thinking "wow". With so many storylines being done and redone, it is hard to find something original.

This book delivered on the originality. Although the stories often followed the style of some of the classic movies, I felt that the author's own voice and imagination shone through to create something unique. Some stories were funny, some added a touch of fear or anxiety and some were thought provoking. You even had some mythology in there.

I enjoyed the different story telling styles. It kept each story unique and interesting.

ARC reader. This means I received the book from the author, and while I usually try to honor any requests accompanying ARC copies, I believe that, above all, readers deserve my honest opinion (no requests made for this one). Therefore, my review and rating are in no way affected by any external requests and reflect my true experience with the book.

This was definitely an interesting read, I finished it in two sittings, even though I didn't resonate with all the stories, and I found the topics uneven in terms of my liking.

There's a nice mix of horror stuff related to movies, from classic slasher vibes, cosmic horror, and even zombie unicorns. I'm pretty sure there is something for everyone here, and that the most classic horror cinema enthusiasts will enjoy all of them.

I especially enjoyed Latchkey, The Ash Collector, Zombie Unicorns from Galaxy 13, Apprehension Engine and Salting the Meat; while I liked Choose Your Own Destruction, Ashes Upon Ashes Upon Ashes, The Clover Café, The 31st of October in Locust, Maine and Medusa with the Heads of Men; but didn't resonate as much with Station 99, Attack of Melvin and Tricksters.

The reasons vary and I prefer not to extend this review too much, but regardless of personal liking, I think it's a book worth reading and I would recommend it, even more if you are a classic horror movies fan!

My final rating would be a 3.5 but since we can't use halves, I will keep it at 3.

Thank you, BookSirens, for access to this book.

As a lover of all things horror, I enjoyed "Saturday Fright at the Movies." Reading this felt like sitting down to watch the Chiller channel with my mom, a weekend tradition when I was in my teens.
Each story felt unique, yet Amanda Cecelia Lang still found a way to tug on the strings of nostalgia of classic and cornerstone horror stories.
Because it's a collection of short stories, not every one resonated with me. And some felt like they were written with different audiences in mind (middle grade vs. adult), which occasionally took me out of a story. But I was quickly pulled back in by a desire to figure out how Lang would add her own twist to the story. My favorites were The Clover Cafe, Apprehension Engine and The 31st of October in Locust, Maine.
This book is a great read for anyone who loves classic horror with a fresh twist.

What happens when you wake up in a movie theater, shackled to the seats, and someone watching you?

When reading the introduction about how Amanda Cecelia Lang's love for movies came from 80s slasher movies, I knew this book was written for me. I visited my local video rental store several times a week and fell in love with all of the b-movies that no one ever rented. I even yelled when Session 9 was mentioned, which was my whole personality for a long time.

This book contains 13 stories that perfectly captures the nostalgic feeling of the horror movies we grew up watching. From slashers to cosmic killers, all of our old friends are there. Every story is a winner and anyone who loves horror movies will fall in love with this book 13 times.

A powerfully imaginative collection of scary tales with nods to many classics and told in keeping with a much-loved genre.

I found some of the tales worked better for me than others but all were well delivered and there were a couple in here that were either very cleverly done (Choose Your Own Destruction) or truly memorable and surprisingly emotive for the genre (Clover Café).

This book contains everything! Gross, humor, mystery. With unique monsters and creatures, explosive final girls and a lot of slashing.

It is written from different perspectives, including the "you" form, which sometimes took some getting used to. The text also used thick letters, which was very nice to read. Definitely recommended!

The “you” writing style took me quite a bit to get used to, I’ve never read a book like that before, only third person or first person. So this was definitely a first!
Once I really got into it, it was pretty good!
Very entertaining horror short stories, with some typical tropes to give it that slasher feel.
Great read!

Loved it! Like one of the other reviewers, my favorites were Latchkey and Clover Cafe, but there were several more that have stuck with me in the months since reading it (the morgue fanboy, the zombie unicorns, the soundtrack composer, etc.). I definitely recommend for horror fans and even people who enjoy speculative fiction in general.

This was my first read of Amanda Cecelia Lang, but I fell in love. Latchkey and The Clover Cafe are my top two of this collection, but there weren't any bad ones. This collection is well written, with a cohesive theme but each story is unique and non repetitive.

This anthology is really fun! Each story in this movie/film/screen-oriented anthology is inventive, with unique premises and quirky characters. Each story had its own unique voice and tone that kept you reading all the way through. My favorite has to be “Zombie Unicorns from Galaxy 13” for the premise (a night at the drive-in goes horribly wrong when space invaders arrive), the narrator (a sassy teen with a love of all things horror and loads of snark), and of course, Wyn the unicorn (for being awesome)! I highly recommend this anthology!
