Glen Banchor: A Highland Glen and its People

Rate this book
Tucked away in the mountains behind the village of Newtonmore, Glen Banchor is a hidden gem, much loved by locals, tourists and hill walkers - but, like so much in the Highlands today, devoid of human habitation. The observant walker will, however, spot the remains of old settlements from prehistoric hut circles through to the farm townships of more recent times, while those venturing into the hills will find clusters of shieling bothies on the mountain burns, all testimony to five millennia of bustling human activity.

Through extensive use of original sources, field work and oral testimony, the authors provide an intimate and personal study of the glen through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, charting the settlements, the way of life, and the principal families who made their often precarious living there. Above all, however, the book explores the forces and events that led to its preseent state of desolation.
