I delitti della Rue Morgue e La lettera rubata
La notte di Parigi è squarciata da grida nel vicolo della Rue Morgue, al quarto piano di un vecchio palazzo è stato commesso un duplice omicidio. Le vittime sono due donne, madre e figlia, i loro corpi sono stati profanati con una furia tale da sembrare disumana. Madame e Mademoiselle L’Espanaye conducevano una vita dimessa e senza pretese, poche conoscenze e nessuna amicizia. La polizia brancola nel buio, la vicenda ha dell’incomprensibile, gli indizi raccolti sono pochissimi e le testimonianze contraddittorie. Solo un uomo può mettere ordine a questo caos apparentemente l’investigatore Auguste Dupin. Un eccentrico e sarcastico gentleman parigino dalla mente analitica e dal sofisticato intuito.
Analizzando le strane circostanze, ricostruendo la scena del crimine, Dupin arriverà a una soluzione che ha dell’incredibile.

Il ministro francese, politico astuto e spregiudicato, si è impossessato di una lettera riservata che mette a repentaglio il buon nome di un’importante nobildonna. La polizia ha cercato segretamente e con ogni mezzo il documento senza riuscire a trovarlo. Il prefetto G. chiede aiuto a Dupin che, dopo un attento ragionamento deduttivo, verrà a capo del mistero. Il metodo d’indagine di Dupin si baserà su di una spesso la realtà è meno complessa di come la si immagina.

But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.
The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.

Il mio voto riassume in pieno l'espressione di Goodreads "it was ok".
Riconosco sicuramente il valore del racconto lungo, precursore del delitto della camera chiusa e probabilmente capostipite del romanzo giallo.
Tuttavia negli anni entrambi i filoni letterari, tanto il delitto della camera chiusa quanto, più in generale, il romanzo giallo, si sono visti sviscerare in ogni loro parte, con sperimentazioni più o meno riuscite e picchi altissimi (tanti quanti i baratri bui). Quindi alcune volte trovo che questi classici del genere risultino, ad un lettore moderno, poco coinvolgenti e molto macchinosi nelle loro dinamiche di trama.
