I’ve had a crush on my best friend since I first laid eyes on him.

Rory is pure nerdy hotness. Dark red hair flopped over his glasses, freckles cresting the bridge of his nose, intelligence packed in his gray eyes.

Three weeks ago, something happened. A moment. A late night study session turned into his hand resting on my thigh, his eyes dropping to my lips. Then he took off, stumbling away.

Was it an almost kiss?

I don’t know.

What I do know is that it’s two months until graduation—until everything changes—and we’re on one last spring break trip with the guys. Sun, sand and beach vibes.

Time’s counting down. If I want to find out what happened with that almost kiss, I need to do it now.

On the plane flight over, I do something I can’t take back. When he gets up, I sneak a peek at his eReader, my heart beating in my throat, my brain half telling me I’m doing something wrong. But what I read…. Well, I was right about this last spring break. Everything is about to change.

Until We Fall is a 39k word spring break, friends-to-lovers super sweet MM romance novella with all sorts of good vibes.

You're pretty, we're drinkin', so I say what I'm thinkin' / "How come everybody's dancin' but you?" / A deep conversation, a last-minute invitation / Yeah, I'm gonna make this easy for you (Shy Boy – Carly Rae Jepsen).

Fun fact, I never use the word “bro” because I never want to sound like the characters in this book. I don't know, I guess I've just always thought that there was a shallowness to it... but that's probably a little harsh, because I think it was actually The Hangover movies that first made me think, "wow, I hope I never get associated with this particular sub-culture of dude-bro. Also, I hope this director never makes another movie, let alone an incel power fantasy that makes a billion dollars!" but I digress. Um, I'm okay with “bruh” though… because… bruh, these books really do fade from the memory banks real quick after reaching the final pages, don't they? That wasn't rhetorical, I'm actually asking you because I'm afraid I won't remember the answer by the time I finish this review! Ahh I’d better write quickly, because it’s already disappearing like that one picture in Back to the Future. Sorry, I can be a little dramatic at times. Anyway, I just finished Until We Fall and I’ve only just learned the main character’s name... but only thanks to outside sources and intense research (I asked the person I buddy-read this with). That's probably not a good thing, right? Like, this is information I should be aware of, no? I mean, it's not like this book is trying to be Fight Club, where the narrator remains unnamed throughout because it's his (spoilers for Fight Club) alter ego who's supposed to be his true self. Well, maybe it is trying to trying to be Fight Club a little bit, considering how gay this book is, and I mean that as a compliment to both. Okay enough stalling, I'll talk about this book, I will! But let me go through my usual spiel first though: this book was perfectly fine and I enjoyed it, but I never quite loved it the way that I would have liked. You know how Marvel movies and shows always brag about the “super-hero genre” being so all-encompassing that they can have every genre under the sun without things feeling crowded and convoluted? “Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a political thriller!” “Doctor Strange: the Multiverse of Madness is a paranormal horror!” Believe me, I’ve heard it all before like Madonna and every time I've had to fight the urge not to roll my eyes. It's like, all of these things sounds great and all, but have you noticed that the very fact that these movies have to include super hero tropes always dilute the potential of what the story could be? Because I noticed! Like, Daredevil is technically a legal drama, but it never feels like a good one in the same vein as Better Call Saul because Daredevil will often lose his cases in order to justify his brand of costumed justice. "I'm a really good lawyer!" Um, not with that track record, my guy. Jessica Jones never feels like a good noir film because of the simple fact that she has super strength, thus negating any sense of tension because she’s always getting in fist fights instead of using her detective skills! It's a super hero show, not a detective show. Captain America: Brave New World is a “political thriller” that released during a tumultuous political landscape, which is the perfect time to make a statement, and yet it still managed to say nothing, mean nothing, and ultimately amount to nothing.

This isn't just shade, I promise, because do you see what I mean? Because of the fact that all these movies are held prisoner under the super hero umbrella, forever being choked by their brand, they are never able to meet their full potential. Well, maybe that’s a little dramatic, because these are still popcorn flicks, but you'd think an action movie would at least be able to hold my attention for a couple hours without me reaching for my phone. Overlong comparisons aside, the super hero fatigue equivalent is exactly how I’ve been feeling with these shirtless man books for a while now. And yeah, I did appreciate this book’s attempts on discussions around body image, as you don’t often see the topic handled at all in these kinds of books, but I feel like having such an important conversation fell a little flat considering the Adonis there on the cover. Like, "It's okay to be happy in your body! But also here's the most perfect, conventionally attractive man with as six-pack on the cover!" I'm getting mixed messages here. Okay look, I know Until We Fall wanted to say something important, and trust me, I would have liked to listen, but I can’t help but feel like something here felt lessened and diminished nonetheless. Besides, some of the conversations around body image kind of took it a little too far in my opinion. Not because the topic shouldn't and couldn't (shan't and can't) be breached in a book like this, but because it's never brought up in a natural way. It's like how Adam Silvera will randomly have his characters stop the plot in order to talk about how they were picked on for playing as Zelda in Super Smash Bros. and not to make assumptions, but that's clearly an issue that only Adam Silvera himself dealt with in his personal life. Like dude, nobody cares who you play as in Super Smash Bros. and I know because I always play as shirtless Shulk and nobody ever gives a shit. Anyway, the other reason why the whole "positive body image" thing didn't work here is because the D is constantly saying instead of showing how he's attracted to Rory because of his perceived faults, not despite them. And while I can't lie that the sentiment is surface level sweet, in my opinion it came across as fake deep rather than deep deep. Maybe because of all the "bro-speak," but I couldn't help but be reminded of those situations where dude-bros are all nonchalant saying shit like, "Hell yeah, you might be [blank], but I'd still bang, no sweat" and sorry, but that's never actually a compliment. Here's the thing, there’s a certain point where constant sexualization of a specific thing feels less like shining light on a road less traveled and more like… someone’s fetish. And I guess that’s cool if that’s what this book wants to be… but trust me, fetishization is not the same as representation. I’m just saying, this isn’t some random dude’s opening line on Grindr, so I don't think I ever need to know who is and who isn’t circumcised in a book. Oh yeah, I forgot to give you the skinny on what this book is about, it’s quickly leaving my brain, so I’d better get on that!

Until We Fall (no idea why it’s called that) is about two college roommates (“omg they were roommates”) who are both secretly in love with each other, with D only acting on feelings when he ends up going through Rory’s Kindle on a well-timed bathroom break, and finds a bunch of gay shit on it. I think this scene was supposed to be cute, or at least a little light and easy, but I can’t lie that I felt a little thrill of anxiety just reading through this chapter because a bunch of gay shit is exactly what you would find if happened you steal my Kindle! Seriously though, go through my stuff and we’re going to have a problem. It's not cute. Anyway, nosiness aside, I kind of liked how our main narrator, “D,” was the typical sexy jock type that the fits to typical image of the love-interest and the actual love-interest was very much the insecure nerd-type who's all like, "I can't believe you would choose me." The vibe of this book had a nice role-reversal appeal that kept the story from feeling too by-the-numbers, and if you like following a conventionally attractive guy go on and on about how beautiful his crush is, then this is definitely the book for you. But again, because of the trappings of the genre, we often move past the feelings of friendship and love pretty quickly and learn that our main guy is just… really horny. And that horniness takes up pretty much the whole book to the point where it gets a little silly. I guess you could say that D wanted Rory to rain on his head, call that brain-storming, if you know what I mean… the jacked jack-of-all-trades gets caught jorking it by his buddy Rory… if you catch my drift! Okay, that’s it. While I normally have no issue with oversexualization in novels, I think it was the introduction of more serious topics that made me analyze Until We Fall under more scrutiny, because if you want this book to be some kind of grand love-story, you've probably got to dial back the horniness a little bit. Or at least make it less intertwined with the serious subject matter so it feels less like a specific kink and more like it's opening a real dialogue around the topic. But yeah, I did end up liking this well enough despite everything I just said. But the thing is, despite my hang-ups, I’m actually very easy to please when it comes to books with a shirtless man on the cover. You know those video game reviews on YouTube where they do those graphical comparisons by putting the different screens side by side to compare the Xbox and PlayStation versions? Yeah well, I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that they always look the same to me. In my opinion, as long as a game has nice looking water, I consider it a marvel of graphical prowess, whether that be Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker or Avowed. I’m much the same with these kinds of books, because as long as it held my attention for long enough and I’m still sitting here at the end of it, then I consider it time well spent. Until We Fall is a cute little novella that might seem a little unimpressive at first, but don’t worry; it’s a grower. That's a penis joke.

This was a weird mixture of adorable and silly. I had a bit of trouble getting into it, or making friends with D's train of thought. It was quite awkward at the beginning.
Later he grew on me and it became sweet and beautiful. And at the very end I actually let a little tear escape. Overall though, I don't think I'm the right audience for this book, the characters are a very odd mix of immature and serious. I can understand it a bit, but I found myself wondering more often, ‚god was I ever that young and foolish?‘ Probably, but I've blocked it out.
Anyway, what I really liked was the way the body positivity was handled. And even though it was teeth-grinding for me, it was nice that it took a while for Rory to build up enough trust.

I clear my throat. “Has anyone ever put you first, Rory?”
His lips part. He doesn’t say anything, but I can read the answer all over his face.
No. In his entire life, no one has ever really put him first.
What is wrong with us? I mean, all of us? Why are people like this? If someone like Rory doesn’t know how amazing he is, then what the fuck are we, as a whole damn society, doing? Why are we even going about life if—
“You do.”
My focus snaps back to him. “Is that true?”
“All the time, D.” He swallows. “You put me first. I always feel so seen with you. Like you’re listening.”

Sweet novella about two best friends falling in love.
Not bad but I wasn't blown away either.

I had read the author's book Let's Do This a while back and rated it 3 stars as well. I guess I'm not really clicking with their writing.

Extremely sweet and as always I absolutely adore Loren’s writing. I never fully clicked with this one and it’s so far my least favorite of Loren’s books. I’ve *loved* everything else. I’m still very excited to dive right into the next installment though!! I’m trying to think of other words besides ‘sweet’ to describe this one and I’m stuck - maybe that’s my issue - it never went past ‘sweet’ for me. All in all, still a worthwhile read and I will be seated for *anything* Loren writes!!!

“You give me butterflies.”

This whole book gave me butterflies. It was sooo cute and sweet. Dorian having the biggest crush on his best friend and Rory an insecure baby who just needed someone to see him.

“Making me feel like…” He licks his lips. “Like I’m…” “Worth it?” I shrug, because it’s the most obvious fact in the entire world. Even if he doesn’t see it, I always will. “Because you are.”

Stahp, these two were too cute. Even though it was a short read, Loren Leigh made me fall in love with these two, especially Dorian. I believed in their young love, and maybe sorta teared up maybe a little at the end. Just a little.

It feels like my heart is dumping out with my words. Like I’m tossing it at him, and I don’t know if he’s going to catch it.

The size difference was also insanely hot. And the docking? Hell yes.

I look down, and fuck… our size difference. His smaller cock up against mine, his head swelling against my shaft, the way that we look together. It’s so fucking perfect.

This was exactly what I needed to boost my mood — just fuzzy feels and giggling and cuteness and a happy ending.

“I’d never mind waiting for you.” He sucks in a breath. “What if it’s a while?” “I have a lifetime.” “D—”
“Don’t argue. It’s my lifetime.”

Bonus quote, ‘cause Dorian is me and I am Dorian and I had the exact same reaction:
There’s one bed. One bed. Holy fuck, YES.

Short and sweet.

Dorian is an amazing character. For a novella, he was really fleshed out, and I could feel how much love he has for Rory 🫶

"The feeling of him in my foreskin is seriously fucking wrecking me."

Shewwwee Jesus! That detailed docking scene went straight to pickle tickler material 🥵

Hot, sweet, n silly. I Goofy smiled the whole time. The love and appreciation they had for each other was beautiful. The way D talked about Rory… Gosh 🥺 he was SO in love… YEARNING for that man… talkin' bout his wrists, skin, freckles....heck, even his feet!
Sickly adorable.
I loved every minute of it.

I think I just read the cutest story ever! Best friends to lovers is my favorite trope and this book proved why once again. Rory and Dorian (aka D) are so sweet, pure and precious. The way D reassures Rory, telling him how perfect he is, how sexy he finds his body and how much he loves him just as he is, was so touching. Usually, when I finish a book, I ask myself “Will they really stay together forever?” But this time, I didn’t even have to because it's so obvious. I only wish we could get more of them and their life together now that they’ve finally gotten their HEA. I want to see them live together and be all domestic, they’re just that adorable. This novella is a little gem and I highly recommend it!

This is my third book by this author and I’ve loved every single one of them!

This was a cute little novella about Dorian who is in love with his BFF Rory.

Ohh Dorian was a sweet summer child. I honestly have no idea what that phrase means but it seems like it fits when it comes to him. Dorian or “D” as everyone calls him literally carried this book. I loved him sooo much. We only get his POV and I wasn’t even mad about it because I loved being inside his head. He’s just genuinely such a great guy and he loves his BFF Rory so much! Way more than a friend.

I really liked how roles were reversed here and the big jock looking guy was obsessed with the shy nerd. Usually it’s the other way around in best friends to lovers books so it was nice to have something different.

I’m gonna be honest and say that Rory was not my favorite. I get that he has a lot of hang up’s and insecurities because of his family and his ex but he’s just soo defensive and his walls were up so much. For most of the book actually. There were times where he let them down but I just feel like Dorian deserved someone a little different because he was just that amazing. I think if I would have like Rory more this would have been 5 stars.

I’m also glad this wasn’t riddled with sex scenes and their relationship didn’t revolved around sex at all.

Anyway I will definitely read the next novella because I wanna read about Carter and..Tyler? Idk I honestly forgot the guys name lol.

NO CHEATING
NO OP DRAMA
NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP
NO MANWHORES or VIRGINS (idk Rory’s backstory was a little vague)

okay well that was sweet and romantic I wish we had a full book of their story instead of the novella
forgot and saw in her book list that I read her most read book and I can't even remember it even though the blurp sounds very up my alley I but I apparently did not like it at all so it might be hit or miss..

there are more authors mainly female mm authors who have some great works and many not so great works...idk what changes for them if its just to push out material and make mediocre stories, or are influenced by things they read and take up bad habits, experiment with diff formulas I have no idea but its a common thing I read in reviews that some books are 5 star and some suck so bad its barely 1 star..or its mainly just fine..with a few 5 star books..

I hope to find more that I like but it does make it hard to want to pay full price for a book from an author that's hit or miss.. I will read it from the library borrow it find a free copy on their email lists..and kindle sales. mmm im rambling

so in summary Loren leigh 1 good novela 1 bad book hope to find more that are okay

2⭐️ Rory and D are on spring break together and have to share a bed and finally admit their feelings to one another. Since this is a novella we don’t get much time with them and the development of their feelings is off page.
Unfortunately, dialogue felt quite unrealistic for guys in their early-20s. I could definitely sense the author’s perspective and it pulled me out of the magic of the story a few times.
Also, the whole story seems to revolve around Rory’s insecurity about his small penis which I felt overshadowed the love story and became almost fetishized.

This was so cute. Rory and D are bffs and are about to graduate college and leave for the world. They’re both pining for each other but don’t know it.

Their relationship and chemistry was so good. It’s mostly in D’s pov but we do get some of Rory which was an added effect.

Basically. It’s just two bffs finding out they’re perfect for each other over the course of a Spring Break vacation. 😭

It’s short. It’s sweet. It’s not really spicy (third base stuffs) but it’s really good 🖤 EDIT TO ADD: the do home run things but it’s less than two pages and they spend more time fumbling with a condom than they do actually doing the hanky panky. If you blink, you’ll miss it. (Is that better @lauralee?????)

As usual Loren Leigh’s writing is very evocative. I felt a lot of feelings reading this, even tho it’s a short! It also had me loling at points which actually isn’t usual for a LL read 😂

HOWEVER these two characters just weren’t really for me. The entire story is essentially about Rory’s insurmountable amount of insecurity about himself and nothing grates on me more than an insecure MC. Maybe I’m projecting cause I’ve been that insecure person but seriously, there’s nothing I want to read about less.

There was one scene that was surprising hot tho 👀

Anyway! I’m not sure why this exists but it’s fine that it does. For those into size difference maybe it’ll do it for you because there’s also a lot of chat about that 😂

Have I ever mentioned how much I love Loren Leigh?! This was no exception. Heartwarming, adorable, hot?! Absolute perfection.

Such a cute little novella - after reading about Theo and Carter in the Popped charity anthology, I knew I needed Rory and Dorian’s story too. This did not disappoint.

One thing I love about Loren Leigh is her endings don’t always follow the typical “HEA” her characters forge their own paths and I love how they always choose what is best for themselves individually even if it’s not the expected path most romance novels take.

I loved meeting Rory through Dorian’s eyes, the way he constantly put Rory first and really affirmed his love and feelings for Rory made my heart happy. And that moment when Rory finally believed him? Ugh perfection.

I need more from Loren Leigh asap.

super sweet besties to lovers novella🥰 Dorian was my fave character, he was just so adorable like a big puppy💘 his inner thoughts were the best🤭 & he felt relatable*! (tho i kept forgetting his name bc everyone just called him 'D' & the story was mainly told from his POV🙈) Rory was a cute & relatable* character as well (*both characters were giving neuro-spicy vibes♡), but D just stole my heart right in the very first few pages🤭🥰✈️📖

i really enjoyed how this short story was built up, how we got to see the MCs interact, sharing beautiful friendship moments, & crushing on each other (at the same time)❤️‍🔥 and i especially liked how they didn't immediately get into fucking each other, they went slow with lotsss of kisses, they went on dates, it was all so romantic!!!🥹🫠 they were just so adorable *sigh*

the side characters were fun too, i'm super curious about the next novella in this series of shorts!!!?!!🫢👀
Loren Leigh never disappoints, her writing style really works for me every time✨👏

You know that feeling you get when you want to read an MM romance that’s quick, comforting, easy to sink into, with no particular content warnings and full of good vibes? Well, if that’s the mood you’re in, I believe Until We Fall fits perfectly.
The story follows Dorian, a bisexual main character who’s always been in love with his best friend, Rory. He’s kept his feelings hidden for years, too afraid of a rejection that would lead their friendship to an end. But as graduation approaches, the two of them and their friends, Theo and Carter, plan one final spring break trip as a bittersweet farewell to their college years. Dorian realizes it’s now or never. In two months, they'll go their separate ways. With the clock ticking and their paths soon to diverge, Dorian decides it's time to take a chance on what's been unsaid for far too long.
Though I don't usually go for novellas, this one turned out to be a pleasant book to get into. It's the perfect comfort read for anyone craving a light MM romance filled with tenderness and nostalgia, doubtfulness and depth. I guess I just needed something short and sweet to keep the spring vibes alive before diving into my spooky TBR. Despite its brevity, I still grew fond of the characters, especially Theo and Carter. Reason why I’m FLYING to read the second novella, Until We Kiss, made specifically for the two of them.

Until We Fall is a novella by Loren Leigh. She released another, the other two guys' story in a separate novella, Until We Kiss, from the Popped! Anthology. Both are available now on the zon.

But I snagged this over the summer, or last summer?, during a novella giveaway and with the power being out this afternoon I felt beachy.

Four college friends, one last trip before graduation... until real life begins. Each novella focuses on one of the couples from this trip, and Until We Fall is Rory and Dorian's story.

• friends to lovers
• pining
• d○cking
• size difference
• 🍆 size difference
• big feels
• only one bed

These two, Rory and Dorian, almost kiss a few weeks before their big best bros trip. While Dorian can feel ALL the tension, Rory seems oblivious to it. Until Dorian realizes it's because Rory doesn't feel like he measures up. He doesn't think "a guy like Dorian" could be interested in a guy like him.

Y'all, he is so wrong. D is DOWN BAD for the little d. Big time.

Great novella, would totally buy a book that basically had both of these novellas in because this best bros trip had all four of these bros finding their other half.

Such a lovely novella, I really like both the MCs and also the side characters.
It's a best friends to lovers in a forced proximity/only one bed kind of vacation during the last year of college.
Dorin's POV is fantastic: he's hilarious and he does a lot of rambling in his mind. Rory is a sweetheart with self esteem problems.

What prevented me from giving a higher rate:
I would have loved more dialogues: there wasn't miscommunication between them, but the dialogues were very limited.
I also think the epilogue was rushed, I definitely needed more details about their life.

Anyway, cute, sweet and definitely recommended.
