Angie Sage (born 1952) is the author of the Septimus Heap series which includes Magyk, Flyte, Physik, Queste, Syren, Darke and Fyre. She also wrote the Todhunter Moon series, and the Magykal Papers, an additional book with extra information about Septimus' world. She is also the illustrator and/or writer of many children's books, and is the new writer of the Araminta Spookie series.
Angie Sage grew up in Thames Valley, London and Kent. Her father was a publisher. He would bring home blank books that she could fill with pictures and stories. Sage first studied medicine, but changed her mind and went to Art School in Leicester. There she studied Graphic Design and Illustration. She began illustrating books after college. Then she progressed to writing children stories, including toddler books and chapter books. Her first novel was Septimus Heap: Magyk. Angie Sage is married and has two daughters, Laurie and Lois.
This series of books was my absolute favourite thing to read in primary school and I still very much enjoy it today. It follows the story of Septimus Heap as he discovers his heritage and his place in society as the 'Extraordinary Wizard Apprentice' and fights alongside the rest of his family and friends against Darkeness (dark magic).
This series is great for a child who is proficient in and has a passion for the English language because it has many alternative spellings of words as a result of the fantasy setting (e.g. Flyte, Magyk, Alchemie, Fyre). This story also inspires imagination and creativity in storytelling and I remember a lot of the characters and stories I made up as a child were based in and around this series.
In an upper KS2 classroom this book would be great for introducing fantasy as a genre in creative writing and children could be encouraged to make their own 'fantasy words' using their phonics knowledge to come up with alternative spellings of words. Children could also design magical creatures in art and design lessons to form a cross-curricular link to their English work.
Some might think that the Septimus Heap series is just another alternative to the wizardry world of Harry Potter, but that's not correct at all! Heap is brilliant series on its own and I have very fond memories of immersing myself for long, long periods during my childhood.
The one reason I prefer SH over HP is because of, imo, its more realistic world build (no offense to HP fans). The different devices and magics abundant in SH's world fits my expectations of a magical world better, too. (I've tried reading HP but personally it just don't quite sit well with me)
Anyway this isn't a bash on HP; SH and HP each are respectable masterpieces in their own reigns! Grab a copy of both series for your kid if you want them to have a complete childhood no joke.
I owned and read the first 5 books a long time ago, and loved everything about the story. The details in each book drawn me in deeper and deeper into almost visualizing as I made my way through the to the end. Couldn't wait to get my hands on the next . Number 6 hadn't come out yet. My books had got lost and me, distracted until today. I found them here I plan to re-read every word and add the books to my book shelf.
discount harry potter AND NOT EVEN GOOD. the mispellings as a "fun little syntax choice" is bearable at best and makes me want to jump at worst. the plot is random and all chosen one-y without any actual strong reason to be that way and just omg dude omg EVERYTHING IS BAD. i sorry sobbed myself and read theougg books 1-6 and actually wouldve GAGGED AND DIED if i made myself read 7. i thank this book because from it i learnt the ability to LEAVE SHIT SERIES
Loved reading these as a kid. People kept gifting me box sets of it so I had multiple but I didn't mind. Would recommend for any primary age bookworms, fun fantasy.
I got lost in this world -- and loved every minute of it. I read all 7 books in a row because I just didn't want to leave the magic place that Angie Sage created for me. The style and descriptions in her writing transports you to her world, the characters are well developed, and the stories are wonderful. I am glad I didn't have to wait for the next book and could read them one at a time.
I have to admit, I am a little sad to leaving this world behind and moving on the next book series.
When I was younger, I absolutley loved these books. Every time I checked out a new one it was like falling in love all over again. These books are fun, magical, exciting and so absolutley awesome. I recommend it for kids ages 8-12 even a little older or younger.
I love these books, Magyk was my first ever book, and this series is basically my childhood, the world is captivating, the characters funny, and beautiful...I read these books over and over again I read each book at least three times. I love these books to death.
