Delta James brings a new kind of intensity to 'Magic Unleashed'. Read the blurb, and you'll have a brief synopsis. What you won't have until you read the book is the intense chemistry from a forbidden fated mate relationship or the fight between good and evil within the city of New Orleans, LA.
Griff is a dragon shifter. He's also a detective on the NOPD. Phoenix, along with her aunt and sisters, are Fae who have taken up the mantle of protecting the city.
It's intense, exciting, frustrating, and emotional. The storyline intrigued me from the beginning and I didn't let go. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is a quick read, the start of a new series about sisters who are descendants of the Grimms They are fae demon slayers who protect the city of New Orleans from supernatural threats. The story pulled me in from the beginning and was hard to put down. I thought the world building and character development was good, there was great banter and some good spice, but I felt the book didn’t quite live up to its potential and could have been longer with more details added to enrich the story. However, I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

THE ONE SOUL WHO COULD UNLOCK THEIR TRUE POTENTIAL

“New Orleans was a city of secrets, and the Duvall sisters were amongst its most dangerous. The girls were ready, trained from childhood to wield magic like a weapon, their curvy bodies trained and honed into fighting machines. But there was one thing they hadn’t prepared for—their fated mates.”

“You won’t know your full power until you find him. And when you do—everything will change.”
“The Grimm Files were more than a curse. They were a prophecy. One that could either save the world—or destroy it.”

The series will revolve around the four Duvall sisters, who are fae—Phoenix, Geneva, Savannah, and Catalina. They will share a stately home with their late mother’s sister, Aunt Maeve. The story will include good versus evil, magic, shifters, and demons. When heavy demonic activity is more prevalent in New Orleans, they know that they must act swiftly, not only for supernatural beings but for humans too.

While the story will have an appearance by all the sisters, and their Aunt, this tale mainly revolves around Phoenix Duvall and Griff Broussard, Detective. Dragon shifter.

“Phoenix Duvall. The city’s resident fairy demon hunter and, much to his annoyance, one of the most stubborn, headstrong women he’d ever met.”

Griff had been watching paranormal activity, and Phoenix in a battle with a demon. When she wins that battle, turning the demon to ash, she studies the ground, a faint glowing symbol etched into the earth—a summoning circle. Knowing she needs answers, she knows where to find them and heads to The Thorny Rose to speak with Finn O’Riley, owner and fairy who had his fingers in just about every piece of shady business in town. While at the bar, she will encounter Griff.

Griff: Couldn’t stay out of trouble for even one night, could you?
Phoenix: I’m not the one causing trouble, Broussard. I’m the one cleaning it up. What are you doing here?
Griff: Same as you, I imagine. Looking for answers. You’re not the only one who’s noticed the demon activity picking up.

The story will have Griff and Phoenix joining forces to work together as they uncover things that had them knowing it is only going to get worse. Learning the name of a prominent citizen and councilmember involved will. Learning from Geneva, the medical examiner, that ancient magic is involved, and it isn’t just magic, it is dark magic, older, and more dangerous.

“Word on the street is that there’re some—unusual alliances forming. People dabbling in things they shouldn’t—things that are best left alone—dangerous things.”

The story has chemistry between Phoenix and Griff—but a fairy and dragon shifter are not a pair that should be together—yet fate has a twisted sense of humor. While they try and fight the pull they are each feeling, when in the right place, they give in and it is explosive, passionate, and mutual.

Griff: We make a good team, Phoenix. You and I.
Phoenix: I’ll give you that we’re a very good team.

The first story was a page-turning, action-packed tale of good versus evil. Of a dragon shifter and a fae joining forces to infiltrate into the occult. Oftentimes, they are literally escaping with only seconds. But, to destroy the enemy, they are going to have to trust one another, enter the lair of the demonic, and work together. As fated mates, they must rely on each other, their emotions, and their strengths to win. It helps when you have a family that is loyal and will risk it all to support you win the battle, and banishing the lord demon who would wreak havoc on the world.

New Orleans is definitively the place to be for the Supernatural. The Duvall sisters live there with their Aunt Maeve, who is a full fae, like their mother. On their 16th birthday, each of the four sisters: Phoenix, Geneva, Savannah and Catalina were given a journal that contained sketches and detailed descriptions of demons as it was their destiny to fight them. These are the Grimm Files. I found the background- that the Brothers Grimm- Wilhelmina and Jacob wrote down the stories because their sister Charlotte Grimm, actually fought those demons. The journals are the OG files from which the folklore had sprung. Finding out why it fell to Phoenix and the rest to be guardians and fight the demons- was fascinating. I’ve always loved reading about the supernatural and the book does not disappoint. It has romance, history, fighting (awesome fight scenes btw), the fight between good and evil, etc. It literally has everything in it. This book is predominately about Phoenix and what she is hunting. Sensing that things are amiss in the Crescent City, she starts hunting. More and more dark magics are found- predominately deaths that are freaking weird, which puts her in the way of the dragon shifter detective, Griff Broussard. Their interactions are both hot and hilarious. There are loads of freaking things that happens that had my hairs literally raised. Phoenix’s sister, Geneva, is younger than her, and a doctor, she works as the assistant Medical examiner and Griff trusts her with the weird stuff. Aunt Maeve is scary as all get out, but that which is surfacing in the Crescent City is scarier. OMG> I had my AC on and I was nervous sweating! I was freaking out and chewing on my nails. I was also getting google eyes over both Griff and Ash. lol. More mischief and mayhem ensue and everyone and everything ends up being on the line. It is soooo a must read. I can’t wait to read the next books.

Magic Unleashed begins with Phoenix, a fae demon hunter, investigating a string of demon summonings in New Orleans. It becomes clear that humans, not demons, are behind the events. She discovers that a powerful demon cult has infiltrated the city's power structure, led by the seemingly respectable Councilman Victor Fontaine. Phoenix encounters Griff Broussard, a dragon-shifter and homicide detective, while investigating the summonings.

At first, Phoenix resists Griff's attempts to help, but they are forced to work together after a confrontation with a powerful magic user at The Thorny Rose, a tavern frequented by supernatural beings. Their partnership eventually leads to a passionate night together, forging a deep connection that neither expected. Griff investigates the murders from his side, partnering with Geneva, Phoenix’s sister, who works as the assistant medical examiner. She discovers traces of dark magic on the victims, confirming their suspicions. The trail leads them to Fontaine, who Griff suspects is deeply involved with the cult.

With the help of Ash Shadowbane, a rogue demon hunter, Griff and Phoenix try to stop the cult’s next summoning. Griff decides to go undercover within the cult to gather evidence and sabotage their plans.

The novel is full of action, suspense, and romance, with well-developed characters and a captivating plot. The world-building is intricate and immersive, blending the familiar streets of New Orleans with a hidden world of magic and supernatural beings.

The romance between Phoenix and Griff is electric and intense, fueled by their forbidden connection and their shared passion for protecting the city. Despite their initial resistance, their bond grows stronger throughout the story, culminating in a satisfying and emotional resolution.
Overall, Magic Unleashed is an exciting and engaging read that will leave readers eager for the next installment in the series. A great Book 1.

3.5stars—MAGIC UNLEASHED is the first instalment in Delta James’ contemporary, adult THE GRIMM FILES erotic, paranormal, romance series. This is dragon shifter/ NOLA Detective Griff Broussard, and fairy enforcer Phoenix Duvall’s story line.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Phoenix and Griff) MAGIC UNLEASHED follows fairy enforcer Phoenix Duvall as she investigates a series of supernatural murders, all focusing on demonic and ancient dark magic. Meanwhile, NOLA Detective Griff Broussard has been assigned to track down a possible serial killer, an assignment that crosses paths with our story line heroine. As Griff and Phoenix begin their hunt for the truth, the discovery of a demonic cult with powerful connections is threatening to take control of everything they know.

The world building is detailed and entertaining. We are introduced to Phoenix’s sisters Geneva, Savannah, Catalina and their aunt Maeve, all fairy’s gifted with the knowledge of the Grimm Files.

The relationship between Phoenix and Griff begins as friends working together to solve a paranormal crime but the attraction to one another is immediate, and Griff’s dragon now’s Phoenix is their mate. The $ex scenes are erotic and impassioned.

MAGIC UNLEASHED is a fast paced story of power and control, betrayal and madness, magic and mayhem, family, friendships, and acceptance. The premise is engaging and intriguing ; the characters are magical and powerful ; the romance is limited but fated.

I want my old Delta James back. Magic Unleashed is the first in the new series, The Grimm Files written by Delta James.
This 118-page book doesn't seem to have the space to properly build tension, passion, nor build the world in which our MMC and FMC inhabit.
We're introduced to to a dragon shifter detective and a half-human Fae protector. You're told they have known each other for a while and that there is some tension between them but it is very difficult to get invested in them or their relationship. The same is true with the FMC's family and why they are all world guardians.
New information is given to the reader more in the manner of a grocery shopping list. Yeah, it is important when you go to the grocery store but you are not emotionally invested in it and it reads like a list of random items in a Ferris Bueller's teacher monotone. In fact, that pretty much describes the whole book.
I was pleasantly surprised that the book lacked all the typos and grammar issues that many of her latest books have contained. It also lacked all the repetitions that recent books have contained.
Personally, I could deal with typos is they were contained in an interesting and compelling read. Unfortunately, that was not the case here.
I purchased this book because it cost $0.00 and I often purchase the first book in a series by my favorite authors.
The book is neither horrible nor great. I'd recommend reading it through KU. Hopefully, the next book in the series will be better.

The Grimm introduction at the beginning of the book sets the stage for a battle for the heart of a woman and the soul of the man she loves and the city she protects. That same introduction which explains how the FMC, Phoenix, got her powers and draws the reader into the story. Griff, our MMC, doesn't waste anytime jumping into the action or as least flying over it. From their meeting at the bar on through the end of the book, we see plenty of action including a lot between the sheets. As the danger to the city heats up and things get personal between Phoenix and Griff, we are introduced to future characters as they do dive into the fray. Geneva and Ash almost stole this story instead of waiting for their own as they bantered and flirted. We are left off with the knowledge that while one battle ended, New Orleans and the Duvall sisters still have more fight to come in more books.

The book did take an extra beat to find it's feet. We have alternating chapters between Phoenix and Griff but that first swap from one to the other was a bit redundant and almost squashed the tension being built. That transition from one to the other smoothed out in later chapters so I suspect that future books will move closer to five stars.

Blurb:

In Magic Unleashed, Phoenix Duvall, a badass faery teams up with Griff Broussard, a brooding dragon shifter, to take on a rising demonic cult in the heart of New Orleans. But when Griff becomes possessed by the very demon they’re hunting, Phoenix faces a devastating choice, her duty or her heart.

My thoughts:

This book was such a quick read! I finished it in just a few hours because it was impossible to put down once I started. The fast-paced plot, the sharp banter, and the sizzling chemistry between Phoenix and Griff kept me completely hooked. And don’t even get me started on the setting, New Orleans! One of my all-time favorite places brought to life with a dark, magical twist.

The action scenes were intense. Phoenix is such a badass heroine, loved seeing her take on demons with her faery powers and then there’s Griff, a broody dragon shifter who’s a detective? Yes, please! Watching him clash and connect with Phoenix was half the fun.
The spice? It is scorching and hot and had me gasping and blushing with every scene.

The story isn’t without a few predictable tropes, but honestly it didn’t bother me at all because the execution was just so good. If you love paranormal romance with action, humor, and a touch of spice, Magic Unleashed is absolutely worth a read!

A great start to a new series this story features Griff a strong capable dragon shifting detective and Phoenix a half fae warrior human who is tasked with saving new orleans from demons and dark magic. Together they discover an evil threat to their city and must work together to save everyone but in doing so they must address the growing feelings between them they have been trying to deny. Phoenix isn't supposed to fall in love with a dragon shifter but she can't help herself. Griff will do anything to protect the woman he is coming to love but also must save the city and the ppl from evil magic. Griff decides to face the danger alone in order to stop a demon summoning but things go wrong. can Phoenix save the man she has come to love, stop the demon from rising and save New Orleans? Action, danger, suspense, excitement and more surrounds this story of faith, belief in yourself, partnership, determination to do the right thing. well developed plot that flows nicely, richly detailed characters and good world building to start things off.

Terrific read, wonderful characters and scenario that held me captivated from start to finish
This was an engaging read and I know that other readers will be as captivated as myself, the Phoenix family have a compelling history. I was surprised by Aunt Maeve antipathy towards Griff and the way in which Phoenix and Griff take their loyalty seriously, their loyalty is to protect Earth and humans as and when needed seriously.
Phoenix was close to her family and trained to fight and to use her powers and they seem as though Phoenix who was trained by her family and is trained to fight and to use her powers but it seems Griff was ready to let Phoenix into his life however he is also protective of her heart.
He wanted her long term and it seems that Phoenix has to keep running and I have to say that this is a wonderful addition to this series and I guarantee that you will be totally captivated by this captivating read.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the wonderful writing.

Book one in the new series the Grimm Files. This is Phoenix and Griff's story. It's set in New Orleans with the magical side. Phoenix is a Fae/human and Griff is a dragon shifter. Phoenix is one of three sisters, each received their own Grimm file handed down from Charolette, the sister of the Brothers Grimm.

The action starts from page one. Something wicked this way comes is immediately on repeat in my head. Griff is a detective with the police department who seems to get the strange cases. He wants to team up with Phoenix who takes some convincing. Griff recognizes her as his fated mate but there's a little "rule" that fae and dragons are not to get together and Phoenix's aunt likes to remind everyone. It's apparent that the wicked is bigger than originally and involved more of those higher up in the government than they'd hoped.

This story focuses more on the magical mystery element, but the romance is there as well. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I super loved this book for it's setting, plot and characters. I am super excited to know the end of the story between the protagonists since it's a series kind of book, cannot wait to finish it for a couple of days and make a book review. The author makes sure that the storyline is full of twist and turns; adding fuel to my young at heart imagination. I think it's a combination of duty and responsibility and love in between. I loved how the author introduced each characters and how the story revolved in their character development. As an individual who loves to read this kind of genre, I am excited to unlock the following series and stays on it until it is finish to answer my curiosity.

I highly recommend this book to all YA since it provides inspiration to individuals who are in the same page with the characters that needs to balance between: duty or love? friendship or family legacy? or do what makes you happy and leave the rest to fate…

Kudos to the author for this wonderful masterpiece!

I really really wanted to like this one. It started off well, but the details or everything are just lacking. It feels like Ikea furniture. The bones are there but there's no ornamentation and it all looks the same.
The characters are flat: Phoenix has this tough girl can't let anyone in vibe but no backstory to explain why. Griff has a bad boy thing going on but no real personality beyond possessive dragon man.
The location is flat: it's like the person writing this has never been to New Orleans and simply googled a tourist guide instead. It's got the names of places but no character, no soul. The author has two people meet at Cafe Du Monde but no experience of what it looks like, no description of the smell, what's served there, or how the powdered sugar covers every surface.
The plot is flat: every single chapter there's a repeat of something like 'this is dark' or 'this is bad' or something similar, but no real gravitas to the situation. They say 'we don't have time to be distracted' over and over and yet nothing changes. Whole chapters could have been taken out and the story would have been about the same.

This is a new series by Delta James and it lived up to expectations. Based in New Orleans, the magic and mystery seemed right at home. Phoenix is a half fae demon hunting powerhouse, along with her three sisters. The clear and deliberate definition of the characters (namely Pheonix and Griff) was phenomenal, as were the eloquent descriptions of various settings and "hot spots" throughout N.O. it was almost laughable hoe much the two MCs didn't like eachother at the outset, and begrudgingly worked together - or more in tandem- toward similar goals. When would they realize they might be more effective as a team? It's your guess, Phoenix is a pretty headstrong female used to going it solo and at full tilt. Could Griff get her to take a breath to view the larger dynamics before jumping into the frey?

This was an awesome book and I can't wait for the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed a gift copy of this book and can not recommend it strongly enough! Happy Reading Y'all 📚

This is an engaging urban fantasy set in New Orleans, where supernatural creatures and humans share the city. Phoenix was trained by her aunt since childhood to fulfill her destiny as a demon hunter. Both she and her sisters are fae, thanks to a fairy mother who married a human. Griff is a dragon shifter who works as a detective for the New Orleans police. When mysterious murders and incidents involving dark magic begin to appear around the city, Phoenix and Griff work together to investigate the danger. They are soon battling a dangerous demonic cult, while also facing the likelihood that they’re fated mates. This novella has mystery, danger, a relationship with adult heat and some few plot twists. Phoenix, Griff and the supporting characters were all extremely interesting! I can’t wait to read more stories in this world. "Magic Unleashed" by Delta James, the first book in The Grimm Files series, offers an exciting blend of paranormal romance and urban fantasy set in the mysterious backdrop of New Orleans. The story centers on Phoenix Duvall, a tough fairy enforcer, and Griff Broussard, a dragon shifter detective, as they confront demonic threats and an undeniable bond. The chemistry between Phoenix and Griff is intense, and the supernatural elements, particularly the rising demonic cult, add to the tension.

However, the story can feel a bit disjointed at times, as if parts of the plot are missing or rushed, leaving me wanting more context and smoother transitions. While the romance and action are compelling, the fast-paced storyline may leave some readers feeling like they missed key developments. Nonetheless, Magic Unleashed is a solid start to a series that promises a lot of heat and high-stakes adventure.

A good set up for where Phoenix’s family came from and why. And because of Phoenix’s family history, I was kind of surprised by Aunt Maeve’s antipathy towards Griff, who wasn’t human anyway (though he wasn’t fae either). Both Phoenix and Griff took their duty to protect Earth and humans seriously, as well as keeping knowledge of supernatural activities undercover and under control. Phoenix was close to her family and thoroughly trained to fight and use her powers but seemed reticent to accept that her fated mate could appear at any time and that they could be a GOOD thing. Griff was ready to let Phoenix into his life, but he was also protective of his heart. He wanted long-term but Phoenix kept running. Good start to a new series.

A new series! I loved this book. it has it all: A strong fairy enforcer, a dragon shifters who happens to be a police detective, an evil cult and it is all centered in New Orleans.Wow - this had it all. It is a great beginning to this new series. Phoenix is trained to keep the city free of demonic forces and does not have time for a fated mate even if he is a a hotter than can be dragon shifter. But, you don't always get what you want. Just as they cannot ignore fate, they also cannot ignore the danger that awaits them. Soon Phoenix is fighting for more than a life together with Griff as he becomes possessed by the very demonic force they are trying to protect the people of New Orleans from. Very good. No I have to impatiently wait for the next book in this series. I hope it comes out soon!!!!

Seemed to be a lot of repetition in this one. Phoenix, her three sisters, and their aunt are all of Fae descent. Their mother and aunt were banished to the human realm when their mother broke the rules and fell for a human. Descended from the infamous Grimm family, they are destined to be demon hunters. New Orleans is definitely the place to be if you are a hunter of demons.

Detective Griff Broussard is a dragon shifter. Lately, there have been a series of unusual murders occurring in the Crescent City. Murders that have the mark of magic. Strange symbols and a oily, dark substance that reeks of dark magic. Hooded cult members are gathering and using magic to try and summon demons. He knows he will need to work with someone who can handle demons. Phoenix Duvall fits the bill perfectly.

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

This is book one . POV of each of the main characters, Phoenix and Griff. For the most part it progresses the story. I loved the reluctant of both Phoenix and Griff to acknowledge the chemistry /pull between the two of them. Her reluctant was his frustration .

They work well together.

Action from the git go. Well written. Lots of steam to the eventual romance. World building was very good. I could feel the frustration and angst .

This to me has a HFN rather than an HEA vibe, because of the backstory. I would love to read more from the couple. I also like that the story introduces and includes the other three sisters.

Can't wait to see what happens next in the defense of New Orleans and who will be next to find their fated mate.

This fascinating story takes place in New Orleans, a city filled with mystery and magic. Phoenix is a descendant of the Grimm family, a fae, and is a demon hunter like her sisters and aunt. They are tasked with keeping the city safe from evil.

There have been several mysterious murders in the city and dragon shifter and detective Griff Broussard has been investigating the murders. Both Phoenix and Griff want to get to the bottom of the evil forces surrounding the deaths. They encounter danger, a cult of evil magic practitioners, and their own feelings as fated mates.

It's an engaging story from the very beginning and Delta James is a master in crafting such stories. I am a huge fan of her writing and "Magic Unleashed" is part of her mastery. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Grif and Phoenix. She and her three sisters are kin to the Grimm brothers and their sister. Their fairytales were in reaility stories of their fae sisters demon hunting exploits. Phoenix and her sisters received on their sixteenth birthday a journal and a grimm file handed down from generation to generation. She and hersisters were trained from childhood to fight and use their magic as weapons but not prepared for their fated mates. Thats when they will come into their full power. This is Phoenix's story of how she found her mate and unlocked her true power. A great well written story of fated mates and magic. In the only city of magic, New Orleans an ancient city for ancient demons and magic. This is a magical series with intrigue and magical creatures and demons and suspense.

I was totally hooked from the 1st chapter. The 4 Duvall sisters are fae descendants of the Grimm sister living with their aunt Mauve. They are the demon destroyers. Each inherited their copy of the Grimm files on their sixteenth birthday. The storyline plays out in Crescent City, New Orleans, a city filled with magic and where danger looms. The chemistry between Phoenix and Griff, a dragon shifter and detective is undeniable, but the road is filled with obstacles. Dark magic and demons summoned is threatening the city and add to the suspense. No shortage of crackling hot spice. A fast reading, but definitely attention grabbing start to a promising series. I'm in for the ride.

Phoenix is a fae living in New Orleans. Her mother was banned for having a human lover. Her aunt went with her and ultimately raised her and her sisters upon her parents death. So, her sisters and aunt protect the city against evil forces.
Griff is a dragon shifter and a detective in New Orleans. He also helps to keep the evil forces away. Phoenix and Griff have crossed paths in the past and it looks like they may need to work together for the next evil that is coming.
This is their story of working together, acceptance, family, and love.
I recommend this story as I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one.

Magic Unleashed will gab you from the start. You will not put this book down. The energy from New Orleans as well as our fae and dragon mates entices readers. It is full of good and evil, mystery, romance, and family. The storyline is heavy with a cult that wants to unleash evil and the forces of good who want to stop that from ever happening. This is Griff and Phoenix's story and you will be rooting for them. Griff is a homicide detective who happens to be a Homicide Detective. Phoenix is a fae demon hunter and they really don't get along. This author enthralls her readers with amazing characters and storylines. As this is the 1st in the Grimm Files series I cannot wait for the next book. Exciting, moving, and filled with the best in paranormal fantasy be sure to read this book.

A nice beginning of a series. Phoenix is a strong and capable woman, focused on her job and doesn't want to deal with the distraction which is her feelings towards Griff. Griff is also a strong man but doesn't feel intimidated by Phoenix's capabilities which makes him perfect for her. He is more honest about his feelings. They get into all sorts of trouble together and finally have to confront their feelings for each other. What I don't understand is that I thought Phoenix's powers would get stronger from being with Griff but I didn't really see that happening. Other than that, it was an enjoyable read and looking forward to seeing the stories of the other sisters.
