Eighteen-year-old Corena Storm, feared and cast out by her own parents for her Ice-Witch powers, is sent to the merciless Kurikon—an extremist religious order determined to strip her of magic, believing only the gods should wield such power.
But Corena refuses to be broken. Escaping their clutches, she’s thrust into a deadly game of survival, pursued by the relentless Kurikon and the Queen’s elite killing squad. As she fights to stay ahead, she’s forced to rely on unlikely allies—some old enemies, others new friends.
When she falls for someone unexpected, Corena’s quest for vengeance becomes far more complicated. Love wasn’t part of the plan, but it may be the key to unlocking her true power.
In a world where being different can get you killed, Corena Storm dares to fight back, losing and sacrificing much along the way. A dark fantasy with murder, intrigue, twists, turns and plenty of action! Sure to appeal to fans of Frozen, Game of Thrones and The X-Men.
This upper YA fantasy had all the heart and the action.
Things I Loved...
❄️ The MC and her ice magic. Strong Elsa vibes meets a dystopian backdrop. 🗡️ It was brutal and I loved that there were higher stakes throughout. ❤️ The self discovery journey. I won't give spoilers but the MC is learning who she is outside of her powers 💕 Great cast of characters! 💜 A sweet developing romance
In all I'd recommend this for readers of dystopian fiction like Divergent as well as lovers of books with MCs that have painful backstories such as The Red Queen.
Okay, Stuart… what deal did you make with the gods to write something this addictive? Because Storm Rising had me ignoring chores, skipping meals, and side-eyeing anyone who dared interrupt me.
Corena Storm? Absolute powerhouse. Feared, hunted, underestimated, and yet she refuses to break. I loved watching her evolution from outcast to unstoppable force. The Kurikon gave me chills, the Queen’s elite squad kept my heart racing, and don’t even get me started on that unexpected love twist… Perfectly messy, perfectly complicated, just the way I like it.
The world-building? Rich. The pacing? Sharp. The tension? Delicious. This book is basically a snowstorm wrapped in fire, unpredictable, dangerous, and impossible to escape.
Now, Mr. White… I see only two Goodreads reviews so far, and honestly, that’s a crime. We need to get more people reading this gem, because this storm deserves to go global.
Highly recommend to anyone who loves magic, survival, high stakes, and characters who make you want to cheer and throw things at the same time.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Storm Rising, and, as I have previously enjoyed other works of Stuart's, I was looking forward to reading this one too.
Corena is a very unique character, and I enjoyed reading her story. The hardships she faced, not only with having powers-which caused their own problems-but also fighting to find her place in a world where often everything seems black or white. But, as with everything, there is a grey strip of land where a lot of people reside, just trying to make sense of it all and where they should fit in. But oftentimes people are not made to fit in, and we see that with Corena and how important her powers turn out to be, and with her finally finding acceptance too.
This was an unique wild ride, full of assassins, romance, twisty adventure, and not knowing who to trust. I would recommend this for Upper YA+ readers and for fans of Frozen, X-Men, Red Queen and Shatter Me.
A quickly immersive YA fantasy for fans of twisted fairy tales (think Frozen but with higher stakes and more family dysfunction). I read this at a really quick rate - initially I wondered if I'd missed an earlier instalment as we got into the world immediately but everything was clear. Will appeal to fantasy readers who also have a soft spot for X-Men or Miss Peregrine.
