This novella was pretty high on the creep factor, and kept me constantly guessing who might be a bad guy or who truly was good? I'm anxious to continue and find out more about The Scarlets and what they are up to!

Por alguna razón las historias cortas aparte de ser más entretenidas, son más informativas en cuanto a soluciones y respuestas a todos los misterios y secretos que forman parte del universo de la saga, buen inicio y final que nos hacen esperar con ansias Sanctum para saber que pasó después.

4.5 Stars: Non-spoiler- Such a great addition to this duology. The "Asylum #1.5" is a little misleading; DO NOT read this until you have read BOTH Asylum AND Sanctum. Otherwise you'll be spoiled to a major plot point of Sanctum. But if you have read them, check it out because it is really helpful.
Spoilers- I wasn't sure how I was going to like this because I wasn't a huge fan of Cal in Sanctum, but I ended up loving it! Plus it was super helpful to fill in some gaps and information guesses for The Scarlets' past. I thought the writing style was just as great as in the other two novels and I really can't wait to read more of Madeleine Roux's work in the future.
As far as the actual story goes, mind=blown! CAL was the one who killed his father??!!? In Sanctum; Micah is always mentioning how Cal was really messed up after his father died, making you think it was like natural causes or something, but NO. It's cause HE killed him trying to get away and then was immeadiatly brain washed to be one of them. Crazy! It was also kind of sad to see Micah and Lara since we know what happens to them in Sanctum. ;( But it was helpful to know their history too and know why they were always bickering.
Overall, I think an amazing addition to the story and I'm so glad I read it. ;D

Me dejó re manija, qué quieren que les diga. Me gustó diez veces más que Asylum, y no sólo por la historia sino porque me gustó más el desarrollo de esta historia. Creo que Maddie (su nombre completo es muy largo, sepan disculpar) se desenvuelve muchísimo mejor cuando el foco sólo se centra en un personaje, y no como en Asylum que Dan, Abby y Jordan eran prácticamente un trío que se movía junto. Me pareció un mejor ritmo y lo disfruté más. Además la idea de los Scarlets, estos grupos-sectas de las facultades me encantan. E iba a hacer un chiste político pero me parece que acá no da.
Ya quiero leer Sanctum!! Me da lástima que Dan vuelva a ser el protagonista, pero qué se le va a hacer. A esperar!

Si releer Asylum no fue la experiencia que esperaba, Scarlets me ha recordado porqué esta es una de mis sagas favoritas. A pesar de ser un libro tan corto, Madeleine Roux ha sabido manejar la historia a la perfección. La tensión y el misterio son palpables desde la primera páginas, además de que Cal, al combinar su pesimismo con su sarcástico sentido del humor, hacen de esta una lectura muy amena. La trama avanza bastante bien y al igual que en todos los libros de Asylum, está todo tan enredado que acertar con un suceso que vaya a ocurrir es complicado. El final es sorpresivo y deja al lector con ganas de saltar a Sanctum.

At first, I skipped this novella and went straight to book #2. In book #2 I got to meet Cal, Micah and Lara. In this novella we got more inside of the trio but, mostly on Cal. So, I decided to give it a try.
So here we have a handsome, rich and smart kid with daddy issue. He did almost everything in the book to pissed off his dad, the Dean. And then he got to know his dad 'secret'. A rebel son against his father and the world. Could he win? Or would it be his downfall?
Not that much insight of the characters. It got excited when Cal was at the asylum, but that lasted like a few pages.
In book #1 the kids stayed at the asylum because the dorm was being renovated. The same goes for this novella. I can't imagine living in this old creepy building with bad history. But, that was the perk of this story which got me hook. And yet I got less asylum and more on secret society.
I'm already rolling in the deep. So might as well read the next one.

4.5 stars, must be read AFTER Asylum and Sanctum. It will not make sense and will also spoil some of Sanctum. Really fun extra material, fills out the building world of the Asylum series.

Voy a empezar diciendo que asylum no fue un libro que ame de principio a fin, tuvo sus pro y contras pero Scarlets es el libro que me saco las dudas sobre seguir leyendo cosas de Madeleine. (Espero que no me decepcione con Sanctum). Algo que note con este libro es que Roux puede hacerte sentir curiosidad/terror en dos segundos. Scarlets me generó tanto misterio/tensión en general que me hizo tener MUCHAS ganas de empezar con Sanctum (cosa que no me paso con Asylum 👃) .
Es necesario leer Scarlets para empezar con Sanctum? Aún no lo sé. Vi opiniones variadas sobre esto, pero personalmente se disfruta bastante Scarlets, si tienen la oportunidad leanlo.
Me gustaron mucho los personajes, si bien son pocos están bien desarrollados y cada uno tiene cierto peso en la historia.
Cal me gustó DEMASIADO. Más que Dan? Si, con mucha seguridad.

En los agradecimientos Madeleine Roux menciona que espera que al lector le haya gustado el personaje de Cal, pero yo siento que no llegué a conectar con él y quiero atribuir a que el libro no dió mucho espacio para el desarrollo del personaje. De todas formas continuaré la saga.

Este es uno de los pocos casos en el que hago una comparación entre un libro y otro. No suelo hacerlo porque me gusta calificarlos y apreciarlos de manera individual, y no tener otro modelo de referencia con el cual compararlo. Pero debo destacar que a mí parecer, no llegó al nivel de Asylum ni por casualidad. Es más, hasta podría decir que me aburrió en un comienzo. Hubo algunos elementos muy cliché, me pareció que la historia tuvo más suspenso que otra cosa, y que hubo breves detalles tenebrosos para que no quedara descolocada en la saga, pero no me han gustado del todo. Habría que ver cómo continúa "Sanctum" para decir si éste fue en realidad una adición relevante y útil, o solo fue un agregado innecesario. No lo sé, pero cuando pueda continuar con estos libros, de seguro les contaré. Aún así, vale la pena leerlo, no solo porque es un libro sumamente corto, sino porque quizá haya algo que en caso de no leerlo, se pierda en los próximos libros.

Simplemente: wow
La historia corta definitivamente es mucho más fluida que el primer libro. Comencé con un poco de dudas y terminé con el triple.
Quiero saber que pasa, quiero saber que son los Scarlets, o sea, básicamente todo se resume a una única cosa: tengo mil ganas de leer "Sanctum"

Volví a leer el libro. ¿El motivo? Estoy retomando la lectura de la Saga Asylum.
Esta vez lo leí después de Sanctum, y sentí que todo cobró más sentido. Realmente disfruté la fluidez de la lectura (considerando que toma menos de 2 horas), y considero que aclara muchas cosas que, al leer solo Sanctum, podrían quedar abiertas.
Es importante destacar que, aunque esta historia no es necesaria para entender la saga principal, sí aporta mucho contexto sobre lo que se ve en cada libro.

I'm rating this novella 3.5 stars.
I'm glad I read this novella after reading Sanctum. It gives me closure on why Cal was the way he was in the book. I feel awful for him.
The novella gives you a little bit more info on the secret society Scarlets, which is nice. Sanctum didn't say much about it. It will probably have more face time in book 3.
You also get to see how Cal's dad died. The novella is pretty short, 13 mini chapters. Overall I'm glad I read it. It definitely was worth the read. You do get to get some back story. Do you need to read it to make the rest of the books enjoyable? No. Cal is a side character so it's not that big of a deal to know his history, but this may be a prelude to something more in book 3. Maybe Cal becomes more of a main character then, who knows.

Asi es. Que bueno que le di otra oportunidad a esta saga porque no me defraudo, siempre es bueno dar una 2da oportunidad. Y no creo lo rapido que lo lei.
Sinceramente le baje una estrellita porque senti que de una pagina a otra sin que nos dieramos cuenta se le dio un enfoque completamente a la historia.

Osea, no podes contarme de un chabon que lo persigue un nene fantasma y a la otra pagina hablarnos de una secta que nunca oimos nombrar

Pero de todas maneras esto hizo que la historia me gustara mas, y al mismo tiempo no.
Y mas me gusto el final abierto del libro.
Les juro que me muero por leer Sanctum. Espero comprarlo pronto.

Disappointing.
+DO NOT read unless you have read Asylum and Sanctum first!
+This one just wasn't enough to be a story. It was a nice detailed explanation for a piece of the other books, but I felt empty when it finished. Like there could have been a lot more "guts" to this story.
+It was intriguing and gave you insight into how Cal came to be how he was in Sanctum and also gave some more background to the overall situation and the Scarlets.
+This short novella ended too abruptly.
+oh well,for me,this book and sanctum was a total waste of time.

Me gustó mucho más esta novela que el primer libro. El personaje que se nos presenta en este libro es mucho mejor e interesante(en mi opinión) que los del anterior, así que estoy ansiosa por leer Sanctum porque se que él va a aparecer en ese libro.
Otra cosa: el final de este libro es muy "¿qué está pasando acá?" y como que me dejó un suspenso muy grande por saber qué onda con los Scarlets, me está faltando decodificar un poco de data acá.
Nada me re gustó, me dio el empujoncito para querer leer los libros que siguen.

This is my favourite book of the Asylum saga, simply because it introduces who I think is the most fascinating (and criminally underused) character. Although it’s too short (80 pages) and it feels a little rushed, The Scarlets manages to bring the thrills and scares I loved Asylum for, while maintaining a balance within Cal’s development.

Very interesting. Shows how Cal got into this whole mess. Yet I don't like how it just ended with him being dragged into it. I wish it showed how he caved in and joined or how Reyes took over him. Maybe later after Dan fixed it. See if Cal ever recovers.
