"I won't expect anything less than savage in this world. Even if I have to be a monster to protect my own."
Ending her vacation on a high note, Dahlia Danaher thinks nothing of the mass flight cancellations — until she’s in the strangely quiet terminals of LAX. Then she hears it. The sound of the undead, transforming those around her into something other.
Something rabid.
As chaos unfolds, Dahlia’s protective instincts cement her path to clash with a man veiled in mystery. Someone who is no stranger to darkness.
Growing up as the brother of an Oyabun, Ren Ryūko is used to protecting his own— whatever the cost. He never expected to be indebted to a stranger. But Dahlia is less of a liability than she appears…
Thrown together amidst death, the unexpected craving for more than survival clutches Dahlia and Ren. As they battle the relentless decay, the past fights to resurface. Not only the shadows lurking within Ren’s mind but someone that Dahlia thought forgotten.
[⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Star Review]...VALOR AMIDST DECAY: Is the first full length book in the (amongst Desolation) series by Author A.J. Somers. Spoken in dual POV's.
I don't even know how this one came under my radar...But I think I have Amazon to thank for that, adding to my never ending TBR List..I haven't read a ZOMBIE (Nom Nom) book for so long...
I fell under this trap of my love for zombie books when this genre kept on getting recommended to me, took me a while to jump on that bandwagon but once I did, I became so hooked it wasn't funny. I love that running for your life, that survival instinct, the darkness these stories provide me, the scavenging for food and supplies, the bad people that come out of the woodworks, ticks every thing I love about this genre.
This was so different/unique to any sort of zombie book I've read to date, the characters themselves had so many layers to them it was hard to unpack. A close knit family with a dark military background, nothing else mattered to them but family. You had two brothers and a sister. One brother was a businessman who dipped his toes in casinos, the other was an extremely traumatized ex military, the sister was a doctor.
Dahlia was strong in certain areas, knew how to protect herself but sometimes her self doubt played a big part in her survival, her deceased father taught her life lessons but it's those lessons that should've made her a force to be reckoned with let her down when it came times to step up. A few times she'd mentioned she could shoot, but when it came to the crunch it came across like she was winging it. So for me she was a hot and cold character, strong in one case, weak in another.
Now let's talk about these zombies, a new one was introduced in this book that I have never come across, you had your normal ones you see in this genre, the slow ones, and those fast ones that seemed like they ran track as a human, but this new zombie introduced, they were extremely sneaky, it was as though they had a brain, a thought process that made them hide behind objects until they could jump out on the attack, they were extremely dangerous.
All in all, this book pulled me in, the loved the different take on the zombies, enjoyed what little romance we got in this book with the push and pull, and I'm definitely keen to jump into the next book later on during the week.
I received an arc copie of this book and went in reading blind.
Wow I never read a zombie apocalypse before. I’ve seen shows and movies but reading about it is intense. It doesn’t take much time before the action starts and it doesn’t easy up either. It’s authors AJ Somers debut book and she did an amazing job. The story is written very vividly and it felt like I was there.
It’s written from 2 pov, Dahlia and Ren. The Mfc is very easy to like. She’s very relatable. It’s intriguing to read about the struggles and choices she makes. The mmc is interesting and an a typical traumatized ex military with hidden depths. Slowly we get have a better understanding of his behavior.
There’s some pointers to topics I’m sure we get to read more about in the next books, but this first was mostly about the start of the apocalypse.
I enjoyed reading this, though I did find some meetings with other people a bit to much of a coincidence. Especially during a apocalypse.
The ending was…. Lets say I hope the next follows soon.
I’m obsessed!! I love a good zombie book and this one blew me out of the water! I forgot this was the authors Debut from how good it was! The characters were amazing and the story really felt like you were there right along side them in their adventure through the land!
I need the second book in my hands immediately lol I highly recommend for fans of anything zombie related! This book has action, detailed descriptions, and great character interactions!!
This was my horror/thriller romance and I'm not going to lie, I loved it
This was definitely a 'walking dead but add some more romance' kinda book, or a 'fear the walking dead with romance' as it focuses more on the beginning of a zombie apoloclypse rather than an established one.
AJ didn't come to fück spiders. They got stuck right in with the action, and I loved it. I was on the edge of my seat from the get-go, and my heart was pounding. It was so easy to insert myself into the story, so much so that I had to take a few minutes because i got a bit too upset over the thought of my kid almost getting bitten. In fact this happened a few times. That's how you know the story is fricking amazing.
The romance was quiet light compared to what I normally read but again this is a romance set where there are literal zombies trying to eat you so there's little time for romance BUT the romance we did get, was brilliant.
AJ managed to write the characters with such a complex background and made it seem effortless. Like there was no other way they could have possibly written these characters. I can't wait to unravel these guys and see where the story takes them!
Also can we just applaud AJ for writing a book about zombies and still keeping it fresh and original? I love love love how they took the zombie topic and instead of sticking with the norm (zombies who walk slow/run fast and want to eat your flesh) they put their own spin on it, one that I personally haven't seen/read before.
Bring on book two because I need to know what happens after an ending like that!!

Zombies have never been my thing but obviously I was completely convinced they could be after finishing Valor Amidst Decay!
Right from the get-go you are thrown into the action. We meet Dahlia, a kind-hearted but kickass overthinker who doesn’t hesitate to jump in and save people in need. These people just happen to be the family of the rightfully closed book, Ren - cue the heart eyes because this man, despite his broody curtness, is yet another perfect embodiment of the troubled but protective MMC.
Also, the zombies are terrifying. Some are slow, others screech and run scarily fast. And they can appear literally wherever. That’s one of the aspects I loved about this book; the fact anything could happen. Even during the soft and sweet moments I felt like I was waiting for everything to go into complete chaos. And, when you think the characters have caught a break from the terror of the zombies, there’s mafia. That’s right. Rival gangs. Because obviously gang crime wouldn’t stop during a zombie apocalypse!
AJ's writing style scratches something in my brain. It flows and never lags, which is extremely important for a mood reader like myself who has the attention span of a goldfish at best.
Considering this is a debut, I am so bloody impressed and literally have no other words except for: when is book 2 coming because that ending destroyed me!
- ARC read for an honest review!

This was an ARC read for me. I went in completely blind. I'm usually not one for apocalyptic reads. I've just never been into them, but this one had me hooked. I couldn't put it down.
If you're looking for spice, this isn't it. But the action?? Now that's mind blowing!
But that cliff hanger???? 😭😭😭 I just want to know what happens! Because I have a serious suspicion that I KNOW who's behind all the fires and drawing zombies in! Like, he just wouldn't disappear after all the crap he put Dahlia through.
And don't get me started on Ren 🙄🙄 Like, the whole book I just wanted to smack him upside the head and be like "open your freaking eyes!!!" But he was getting there at the end. So that definitely can't be his end!
I'm in love with Hana! 😍 She's bomb ✨
All in all, this was a really good read. If you're into apocalyptic vibes with some romance on the side, this dish is for you. If you're a hard core romance reader that loves spice? This one may not be for you, but it's definitely worth the read. I will absolutely be picking up the second!
I am an action girly until I die, give me suspense and I’ll eat that shit for breakfast lunch and dinner. AND THAT IS WHAT AJ DID. We came in hot, she was not playing around. She said I came to write a zombie novel, so here I am you get zombies from the start babe.
Everything was fine… until it wasn’t. Dahlia was a normal 27 year old returning from vacation with her best friend to her normal life. Working at a job she didn’t truly enjoy, in a life she felt was unfulfilling. And then… a pivotal shift occurs, the world suddenly changes and it’s kill or be killed. Dahlia sacrifices it all to save a young boy and woman, to do what she believes is right, but does that make her weak?
How very Darwinian, that now survival depends on those willing to sacrifice it all and grind no matter what. Enter, Ren. Our tattooed, former military, mafia-esque, badass, with some serious demons plaguing his life. Family is everything to him, including his military brothers and outsiders are well hard to trust… until Dahlia. He is brooding, angry, and well let’s just say a tough nut to crack.
We also meet a barrage of other characters most notably Hana, Reiji, and Haru. All play a part in this journey of survival. There is chaos, mayhem, death, and panic all around them as they try and navigate the new landscape that the world has become.
As they set out to find Meg, Dahlia’s best friend, who she’s lost touch with and we see all the challenges along the way. Dahlia faces her darkest memories, Ren battles his own inner demons, they battle the lack of power, supplies, and abundance zombies at every turn. They must trust and rely on one another.
On top of all this then AJ gives us this slow burn. And I’m telling you the angst, the build between Ren and Dahlia, I swear it could burn you if you got too close. It’s too much to bear.
I’m obsessed, this book was chef’s kiss for me despite the lack of spice. Give me walking dead, toss in a dash of romance and stir that pot up. The angst, the burn, the banter & action keep you going. However, that cliffhanger was criminal, yes I’m dying for more but my brain is broken. Shame, shame, ma’am. Add to cart, TBR, just trust me okay.
“People are dying. People are being slaughtered by their friends and neighbors. I don’t know why, but whatever it is, it’s real. If you want to die, then stay, but I recommend getting out of here while you can.”
Dahlia Danaher never imagined her vacation would end like this: LAX is eerily quiet, her flight unexpectedly canceled, and an unsettling silence hanging heavily in the air. Why are people running? What is she missing? Screams cut through the stillness, and others look around in confusion and fear. The scene feels surreal and chaotic; some look like zombies, while others seem to be on the verge of collapse from dehydration. A few appear lifeless, their skin taking on a pale, unnatural hue, creating a terrifying atmosphere reminiscent of Train to Busan. An emergency alert blares, warning anyone within ten miles of the airport to stay indoors until further notice and to turn off all lights and hide if they cannot evacuate. It might be worse than anyone realizes. As panic rises, Dahlia’s instincts kick in, prompting her to team up with Ren Ryūko, a mysterious man with a complicated past. Together, they form a fragile alliance, bound not just by the need to survive but also by a growing connection between them. Will they find a way to escape the chaos, or will the darkness engulf them?
In this thrilling ride told through Dahlia and Ren’s alternating POVs, the story is packed with nonstop action that keeps you on the edge of your seat! Dahlia’s fierce determination to survive clashes beautifully with Ren’s mysterious past, creating a dynamic duo that makes every moment count. The scenes are so intensely written that you can truly feel the urgency and terror in the air, perfectly blending suspense with unexpected, heartwarming moments between them. This gripping tale of survival and unexpected connections will leave you breathless and totally craving Book 2!
A big thanks to AJ Somers for sending me a digital ARC of this book!
😱This emoji is the literal reaction I have with this book. It is jaw dropping and definitely one of the spookier books I’ve read! I have to say this book is one of my top reads I’ve read this year! I am absolutely in love with this book! AJ Somers knows how to write scenes so well! Especially with this zombie romance book!
I was on the edge of my seat throughout this book. There are scenes in this book that are so good and actually a bit nerve wracking! I could not put this book down! The details in this book are amazing but it’s enough that it’s not overwhelming with description but enough that it keeps you wanting to read more!
Honestly I wish I could reread this again for the first time! 😭 It was so good! I have already read this book twice, and honestly I’m on my third reread 😂.
One thing I truly love about this book is the mental health rep this book represents. It really does show that not everyone is just a bada*s zombie killer. I’m truly rooting for Dahlia and Ren both. They both each have something they are experiencing and going through.
While this book is a sloooooowww burn it is definitely worth the read! I’m actually loving the slow burn and I’m not one that usually loves slow burn. The passion and love that is growing between the MMC and FMC has me swooning. I love reading how they are slowly but surely coming to love and care for each other. It really has me swooning.
I honestly want to keep writing more lol because this book is just that good, but I’ll stop here for now… 😆
Overall, this book is absolutely sooooooo good! If you’re looking for a Halloween scary love romance, then this is the book for you!!! I could not get enough and I am so looking forward to book 2. I wish I could rate this book higher than a 5 because I so would! 😭 I highly HIGHLY recommend this beauty!
"What is the point of surviving if we ignore our slowly slipping humanity?"
This book is perfection. I cannot remember the last time I was on the edge of my seat so much while reading a book. I am so impressed that this is a debut by @aj.somers.author. The action was intense from start to finish, and you could see how exhausted the characters were getting having to fight tooth and nail to survive every day. Out of all of the romance books I've read, I have never come across one that took place during a zombie apocalypse. But how could anyone resist a military-trained, chissled badass during the end of times!
"I wouldn't be surprised if people are a little afraid of him. It's not so much his size but how he carries himself. Like danger on a stick."
Ren doesn't seem to have a range of emotions, mostly considering himself "pissed off" in his POV. But this just makes his thoughts come across as more authentic, because as a man with significant childhood trauma and a military background, it makes sense that he wouldn't have taken time to explore his emotions.
"To protect my own, I'll be the monster."
I loved how the characters in this book reflect on how people reacted during the last pandemic (e.g. less items in grocery stores due to likely panic buying once the news hit). It's so interesting to read a dystopian story that includes history I've been a part of. It is insane how good this book is, especially for a debut! I don't even want to think about how long I have to wait for the next instalment. I am in love. I am obsessed. Make sure to get yourself a copy on 31 October!
"It's a bit unnerving. Natural life is still going on even though it's the end of the world for humanity. It's like a sick joke."

“Things don’t stay nasty forever, my little butterfly. Stop quitting on yourself.”
This was such an engaging read! A zombie apocalypse packed with action kept me hooked, eager to see what happens next. It’s a slow burn with a touch of spice. The alternating points of view were easy to follow, and the characters had distinct personalities. There were heartfelt moments, some tears, and my favorite—plenty of banter. The book ends on a major cliffhanger, so I’m hoping book 2 comes out soon! Be sure to check all the trigger warnings before diving in.
The story centers on Dahlia, a 27-year-old who had been living a normal life until now. After a getaway, her flight is grounded, and chaos erupts. This leads to a perilous journey as she navigates the outbreak and tries to reunite the boy with his family. Enter Ren, a tattooed, mafia-type badass with a military background and a group of companions, including his brother.
Together, they set out to find Dahlia’s best friend, Meg, who might be safer in her small town—if they can reach her. As the days pass and they near Meg’s town, the story cuts off, leaving you desperate to know what happens next!

I need more!! The slow burn was frustrating and stressful, but had me unable to put the book down!! I can't believe I'm going to have to wait for the next book. Definitely worth the read!!
If im being honest, I had my doubts going into this book because I don't normally jump at reading books about zombies. I do enjoy horror and thrillers, but I felt like a book about zombies might be a little too similar to as if I were watching The Walking Dead.....but I was wrong and I am happy that I gave this book a chance because I loved it, and I want more of it. I got through this book really fast as I stayed up late most nights reading it, that I myself felt and looked like a zombie the next day.
Unlike the typical zombies we are used to seeing on tv, the ones in this book are not all what they appear to be. Imagine going on a trip with your best friend and coming back to a disaster and not knowing what is going on. This book follows Dahlia our MFC as she is trying to escape the chaos at the airport and make her way back to her best friend who is now in a different state. On her way to getting out of there, she stops to help a child and the adult he's with. She tries to get them back to their family where she meets the boys uncle Ren, our MMC. Both Dahlia and Ren have some past traumas that come back to haunt them on their journey to find shelter from the zombies. Along the way, they run into many obstacles, one of them being their own feelings towards each other.
Please check trigger warnings before reading and be prepared to be left on a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more.
This one was different than other books I usually read, but I loved it. It was a roller coaster of emotions. Some unexpected things happened that I didn’t expect. It had me crying 😭 my eyes out and screaming 🙀 for excitement when the main characters interact with each other. There so cute 🥰. They both have their own moments and flaws. They have some things in common and related to each other. They both had a love one die, and experience nightmares. He also calls her Angel 👼🪽😫😭 This book ends in a cliffhanger and really need to know what happens next 😫😫😭
Ren acts like this tough and brave man and doesn’t let others see his weakness and flaws. He cares only about his family and keeping them safe from any harm. Though when he meets Dahlia he slowly starts to feel the need to protect and keep her safe from any dangers.
Dahlia is kind person with a heart of gold. I loved that she tried to save people’s and does everything to make herself feel useful. She has a traumatic past and she had thought it was forgotten. But someone unexpected shows up’s and she starts to feel on edge.
Ren has a older brother named Reiji and a sister named Hana. Reiji has a son whose 8 years old, his name is Ru. I loved Ru, he is a smart and sweet kid and didn’t deserve to have witnessed everything he experienced at such a young age. Also loved Hana she’s a smart and strong badass woman. She’s also a doctor and always has a smile on her face.
This book grips you from the start. My heart was pounding the entire time and I was so anxious. I lived for the interactions Dahlia and Ren had. I loved the friendship between Dhalia and Hana as well. The pacing was so good. With moments of peace as they have a "safe" space but I felt the fear and unsafeness throughout. Everything felt balanced. Enough hinting at the danger with Dhalia's past to make you wait for something bad to happen outside of the zombies. A lot of turmoil from Ren that keeps his feelings for Dahlia at bay. I only wish the next book was out because what was that ending!
I asked for a recommendation in a book chat for a high-stakes romance and this author recommended her book and gave it to me for free which was so sweet! With the slow burn and the high stakes being their lives. This book delivered. I can't wait to see how the relationship progresses....if they make it out alive... and everything else set up in the first book. Slow burn for sure but those are the best types of romances.
Also, did I mention I ignored by responsibilities all day to finish this book. Took me about 9 hours of intermittent ( I was scared lol and needed some breaks) but consistent reading but I was unable to put it down!
This book has some triggers so I'd recommend reading that first to determine if its a good fit for you. But if zombies are your vibe and you want that intsensity with a romance sub-plot I think this is great for you.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 Zombies, Action, and Emotional Damage
I love a good zombie book, and Valor Amidst Decay by A.J. Somers absolutely blew me out of the water. I genuinely forgot this was the author’s debut—the writing, pacing, and characters were that good. This story feels like The Walking Dead meets Fear the Walking Dead… but with more romance, and it focuses on the beginning of the apocalypse rather than a fully established one. I’m usually not big on apocalyptic reads, but this one had me completely hooked. I couldn’t put it down.
The characters were amazing, and the story made me feel like I was right there with them, surviving alongside them. There isn’t much spice here—so if that’s what you’re looking for, this might not be it—but the action more than makes up for it. Intense, fast-paced, and impossible to stop reading. And that cliffhanger?? 😭 Absolutely criminal. I need to know what happens next!!!!
Ren had me frustrated the entire book, but he was finally getting there by the end, so there’s no way that was his last moment. And Hana? I’m obsessed. She’s an absolute queen. ✨
Overall, this was an excellent read. If you enjoy apocalyptic survival stories with strong characters, nonstop action, and a touch of romance, I highly recommend this one. IF your not into zombies, then I suggest you look elsewhere and hardcore spice lovers might want to pass—but zombie-action fans? This is for you.
I received this as an ARC copy and I'm beyond HOOKED!!!!!!!! I absolutely loved this book from beginning til end. This was my first time reading for an ARC and honestly it was a hit i need the rest of the series!
We have a dual POV between the FMC and MMC (which was done PERFECTLY) The pacing was great as a first time novel and doing a slow burn mixed with zombies is pretty tricky but Aj nailed it.
I absolutely loved how each character was well fleshed out. Dahlia ugh my girl. I related to her so much i too have lost my father and there were so many parts that hit me hard (thank you for making me cry a bit ahah) her internal struggle honestly was more her battle then the zombies were she was a complete BADASS! I wish she gave herself more credit. I love that we didn't get a typical helpless girl she kicked some ass.
And Ren the MMC oooooo Mr.Broody himself i love me a good slow burn i love how realistic these two were with their inner issues as well as hello the zombie outbreak happening lol
AJ this book was amazing front to back it was very thought out heartful, funny, witty, angsty truly something to be very proud of i can not wait to be lucky enough to read the rest of the series.
I absolutely devoured this book. A.J. Somers wrote one hell of a story. I loved the fast descent into the apocalypse, and how quickly everything fell to chaos. I was NOT expecting such fast-moving action but it just WORKED for this story.
Immediately, I was drawn to the FMC. She was such an incredibly relatable character, and I was hardcore rooting for her with each new challenge this apocalyptic world threw her way. I loved seeing her relationship with the MMC develop as the story went on, as well. The whole cast has this tough on the outside, sweet on the inside found family vibe which I LOVED. I was so attached to everyone by the end of the book, which HOLY CLIFFHANGER, BATMAN.
The romance subplot is a slow burn, which gives the characters the time to get to know one another and really explore why they're so drawn to each other. The chemistry was phenomenal, and I love the tension that's built between them throughout the book. When it breaks, it's SO rewarding.
I read this in one freaking day, because I just could not put it down. And immediately picked up the second.
If you like end-of-the-world zombie apocalypses with found family and slow-burning romance, you NEED to pick this one up.
Valor Amidst Decay is a slow-burn romance set in a zombie apocalypse where there are numerous terrifying zombies chasing our two main characters, Dahlia and Ren, and their small group, as they struggle to survive. It is filled with nonstop thrilling action right from the very beginning, making you feel at the very edge of the seat as you wonder can they really survive this zombie-fied mess?
Let me start by saying that I am a huge zombie fan and have watched almost all of zombie TV shows and movies there is, however, I have not read a single book about zombies. Not even fanfiction. So I was pretty excited about this one.
Right from the start, we are thrown into the beginnings of an apocalypse and are given what it would feel like to be in one. For the most part, we are given only the horror zombie experience as we are slowly getting to know each and every single characters introduced. Then the romance slowly blossoms from under the surface, turning into something beautiful as two tragic souls learn to adapt to this new world and to each other.
Reading this made me feel as though I was watching a TV show or a movie and I didn’t even realize I read all in two days. It was that good.
So why the four stars?
That’s only due to some of the choices the characters have made towards in the ending, which I understand, but also why? Just focus on surviving the zombie apocalypse, please😭
Highly recommend if you are a fan of:
🧟♀️ interracial romance 🧟♀️ traumatic pasts 🧟♀️ mental health rep 🧟♀️ found family 🧟♀️ morally gray veteran 🧟♀️ yakuza/mafia themes 🧟♀️ ZOMBIES
Get ready for the wild ride. Because this book has it all. This was my first ARC and just wow this book has a little bit of everything in it for tropes. ~Suspense ~High stakes ~Slowwww burn romance ~Beginning of found family ~ZOMBIES yes yes yes ~Troubled pasts ~Protector MMC ~Morally Gray characters ~Main Characters Dahlia and Ren are just bad ass!
I have to say I was very impressed with this book. It kept my attention from the beginning until the very end. This book was so much more than I expected I was blown away by how much action-packed moments were in the book. AJ Somers puts words on pages that make you feel like you are part of the action that you are reading. You literally have an understanding of the different emotions that each character is feeling during this decaying time.
The characters Dahlia and Ren are easy to relate too in the moments that are described in each chapter. I couldn't just put the book down it was so good. The characters are by far perfect for the book. This book will leave you raving for more as this book portrays the beginning of the apocalypse.
I have completely enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the following books. Thank you, AJ Somers for an amazing book.
Wow, this book blew me away! It is the first in a series and is focused on humans facing a zombie apocalypse. The first main character is Dahlia, a woman who is planning to meet up with her best friend Meg. When flights get cancelled, she sees aberrant behavior from humans who start attacking people. She jumps into the fray to save a young boy and his guardian Sayuri. That is how she meets Ren, a former military man and the uncle of Haruto-kun and brother of Hana, Haru’s aunt. Ren’s older brother Reiji is in command while Ren has military buddies that join him to help fend off any type of dangers whether it’s zombies or humans trying take whatever they can from others.
This book is action-packed, rife with horrifying moments, and the main characters and related characters are very well fleshed out. It ends on a cliffhanger, so I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Just wow I have never read zombie book I couldn't put it down at all Ren and dahlia had me hooked than Hana humor and meddling got me in further Ru is sweet boy the whole family did and there bond of protecting eachother had me a bit emotional I don't want to say too much .can you imagine this actually happening in real life I honestly don't know what I would do or how I would react.it had me thinking alot .
Dahlia and Hana building friendship is so beautiful
Ren I knew him and dahlia would have a connection they both had there own trauma I won't speak on it.you need read for yourself cause it's an experience so many emotions and other characters
I did not like price for many reasons and you will understand why
The ending had me like what is going happen I need to know what happens to Ren and dahlia what about the others
Suspenseful ☑️ Slow-burn ☑️ Angsty ☑️ Delicious 🧟 Fast Pace ☑️
This book as the PERFECT spooky time read! From the suspense of the first page to the absolute jaw dropping cliff hanger! I felt as though I was right in the thick of the it with the characters. 🧟🪓 The mental health awareness AJ incorporates into the book is one of my favorite parts, given this is an end of times setting the understanding of the struggle to be ruthless but compassionate for "human" life is a hard thing to convey, AJ made you feel for every decision made by the FMC & MMC. The angsty will they, wont they slow burn is incredible. *Chefs Kiss* 🤌 I love the natural attraction both characters feel for each other. They have hurdles to overcome and hope both are able to heal and enjoy each other in future books! 😍
Thank you AJ for an ARC copy of your Debut book! Anxiously anticipating book two!💕
Wow! I cannot get this one out of my head and I need the next one! This book took me a couple extra days than usual to read because it is so action packed that you have to pay attention to everything going on. The action starts from about page ten and never stops. Normally I am not a zombie girly (an unfortunate too early in life watch of Night of the Living Dead 😢), in fact I think this is really just my second one and I only picked this one because I thought my husband might eventually read it too. I'm happy I did! And I definitely still think my husband would like it. The zombies were interesting and creepy, the plot was plotting, and there is the underlying romantic story woven in. I thought the writing was well done and I was very much hooked from page one. The characters were really well thought out and I really enjoyed how all the relationships progressed. Now I will warn you there is no spice really in this one- it does get steamy a couple times and there is a strong romantic subplot in there. Don't let the slow burn of it all deter you, I have it feeling that it will get spicier as the series goes on. Now the second warning is that this one does end on a cliff hanger and the second one is not out yet. I'm going to be okay - thank you for asking. I still think you should read it now though because then we could speculate together what's going to happen
Well if you want the vibes of the Walking Dead, and zombies everywhere, as well as add in a bit of a mafia vibe, this is the book for you!
I normally don’t read too many zombie apocalypse type books. I like my zombies lead by necromancers 😉 lol, but I did quite enjoy this book. We follow along with Dahlia and Ren and his family as they try to navigate the beginnings of the zombie apocalypse. And all they while they both try to resist the feelings starting to develop between them as an apocalypse apparently isn’t the place for feelings like this…..
As the story continues they definitely hit a few road bumps. They have to deal with other humans along with the zombies! (And their own past traumas). I definitely need to know how the story continues cause I will warn you, it is a doozy of a cliffhanger. But I do recommend if you enjoy full on zombie apocalypses!
Dahlia is on her way home from a vacation in Hawaii. When she lands at the LAX airport, there has been a zombie outbreak and she has to escape. The way this book is written it sucks you in right from the beginning. It is also very fast paced and has you on edge right from the start. I enjoy that this book is a dual pov. There is one storyline with an abusive ex boyfriend that I feel could have been skipped as there was already a lot going on in the story. The book ends on a crazy cliffhanger and I am so excited for book 2!
TWD is one of my favorite series and I’m obsessed with zombie inspired media so this book was a definite must read when I saw the description. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! With new twists to what we know about zombies, this story was fresh, action-packed and so interesting. I loved how the start of the apocalypse was a focus of the story rather an established dystopian world. Ren was such a protective, mysterious MMC and Dahlia was a strong, take charge FMC to adore. Loved this book.
Not going to lie but wanted to DNF at 33%. It was giving Netflix Zombie movie vibes. Mind you, this is my first zombie read. I pushed through and so glad I continued. I could not put it down and needed to know what was going to happen. Loved the found family. Definitely a slow burn. It was definitely giving Halloween vibes with the graphic blood, guts and body parts descriptions. When can we get book 2??! Because the cliff hanger!! 😫😤
I received this book as an arc in exchange for my honest review.
Oh. My. Ever. Loving. God. What a slow burn.
I’m not sure what I expected when I started this book, but I instantly fell in love with it. I could feel all the fear and angst right along with each character. I can’t believe the way it ended! I NEED book two like right now! I will say that I think some of the angst between Dahlia and Ren could have been cut out. The back and forth of them not wanting to accept what they feel for one another was a little much. I just wanted to reach into the book and yell at them to kiss or fuck already!
Overall I really loved this post apocalyptic zombie romance. I can’t wait for the next one.
Thank you to AJ Sommers for giving me the opportunity to read Valor Amidst Decay.
Valor Amidst Decay was a phenomenal debut by A.J. Somers.
The action started almost immediately, and I was thoroughly creeped out. I felt like I could relate to Dahlia, not just in her reaction to what was happening but throughout the book.
The outbreak happens when she's leaving the airport, and even though she has no idea what's going on, she stops to help a young boy who's about to be attacked by a zombie. By helping this boy, she changes the whole trajectory of her life. She's determined to make it out to another state alone to meet with her best friend, but she ends up tagging along with the little boy and most of his family.
I felt like each character was developed really well, even though some secrets haven't been revealed yet. The connections that Dahlia builds with them become quite strong, especially with Hana and Haruto (who she calls Ru). And eventually with Ren. The slow burn between them was to die for.
The way A.J. built the world and described the different types of zombies was fantastic. I could picture each event clearly in my head. Like I said, thoroughly creeped out.
The story never dulled. There was always something happening, and I couldn't put it down. The ending has me screaming. I can't wait for the next book.
