The Syren's Mutiny #0.5

The Ocean's Mercy

Fifteen-year-old Brigid Brigid knew she shouldn’t be sneaking aboard a ship without permission or worse, without payment, but when her father tried to marry her off to a man thrice her age, she had no choice but to escape.
Just when she thinks she’s safe, she's discovered by the crew. The superstitious captain deems her presence bad luck, he orders Brigid tossed overboard. Her fate seems sealed… until the sea decides that Brigid would not die today.
Transformed into a syren and given new life, Brigid now has the power to seek revenge on those who wronged her. But nothing in Brigid’s life has been easy, and why should now be any different?

3.5 ⭐️ I thought this was a good start to Seas of Caladhan and I’m excited to read the 2 full length novels. My only gripe is I wish it was a bit darker? I almost felt the transformation should have been somewhat painful but everything happened very quickly and smoothly. Nonetheless, it set the tone for a cutthroat, immersive siren story that I can’t wait to *dive deeper* into 🐚🪸🌊

***I also wish I could physically own this to join the other 2 books. The cover is stunning 😭

♡ Short Review ♡
Brigid's beginning as a syren was awful, dark, and quite sad. But I loved how welcoming the syrens were, and they felt like family. It was so beautiful to see her beginning, and damn, she was very young when she took her first man—loved the dark aspect of the story!

The Seas of Caladhan duology is a fast-paced, lighter romantasy series perfect for readers who enjoy morally grey heroines, swoony sea captains, and found family themes.

🐚 “It’s frightful bad luck to have a woman aboard.” 🐚

Brigid, the fierce and flawed FMC, goes through incredible growth between the two books, and her journey—marked by shipwrecks, goddesses, torture, and unlikely alliances—had me hooked from start to finish.

🐚 “I couldn’t seem to help myself, her innocence in terms of experience with males that didn’t involve violence was both alluring and a challenge.” 🐚

Book 2 shines with its heartwarming found family dynamic and softer emotional beats, especially after the trauma the characters endure in the first book and into the start of the second. While it leans more into emotional healing, it still holds onto some of the hard edges—just with a different kind of intensity.

🐚 “If Brigid died here, I would burn this entire fraking place to the ground.” 🐚

Although I missed the harder edges and intensity of the first book, the shift made sense and felt like a natural progression. Brigid and Caelum’s relationship is a standout—full of banter, tension, and emotional depth.

🐚 “Not all treasure is silver and gold.” 🐚

Quick, adventurous, and emotionally satisfying—this series focused heavily on character growth and development. It had moments that felt like a YA romance, but still delivered enough depth and stakes to keep things engaging.

Brigid felt the need to escape a forced marriage so stowing away on an awaiting ship seems the answer. So far so good until a superstitious captain decides she is bad luck and throws her overboard. As luck will have it, the sea decided she will not die, and her story takes a fantastical turn.
Good solid plotlines and characters are seen here, though the fast pace of the story finds most details are fleeting. For a good story, I wanted to see a slower pace so that you feel more involved in the book.
Just needed a more nuanced pacing to make this story great.

The Ocean’s Mercy is a short introduction to a series. The plot is interesting but the story is a bit too brutal for my personal preference.

Disclaimer: I received this ebook from BookFunnel and this is my honest opinion.
