കഥാകൃത്ത്, നോവലിസ്റ്റ്, തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത്, ചലച്ചിത്ര സംവിധായകന്‍. 1933 ജൂലൈ 15-ന് പൊന്നാനിക്കടുത്ത് കൂടല്ലൂരില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. അദ്ധ്യാപകനായിരുന്നു. മാതൃഭൂമി ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പിന്റെ സഹപത്രാധിപര്‍, പിന്നീട് പത്രാധിപര്‍ (1956-'81). മാതൃഭൂമി പീരിയോഡിക്കല്‍സ് എഡിറ്റര്‍ (1988-'99). കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് (കാലം), കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് (നാലുകെട്ട്), വയലാര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (രണ്ടാമൂഴം), ഓടക്കുഴല്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (വാനപ്രസ്ഥം), ജ്ഞാനപീഠ പുരസ്‌കാരം എന്നിവ ലഭിച്ചു. തിരക്കഥയ്ക്കുള്ള സംസ്ഥാന, ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡുകള്‍ പലതവണ കിട്ടി. നിര്‍മ്മാല്യത്തിന് മികച്ച ചലച്ചിത്രത്തിനുള്ള 1974-ലെ ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡും. കാലിക്കറ്റ് സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെയും മഹാത്മാഗാന്ധി സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെയും ഡി.ലിറ്റ് ബഹുമതി. 2004-ല്‍ പത്മഭൂഷണ്‍ ലഭിച്ചു.

Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair, popularly known as M. T., was an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He was a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature, and was one of the masters of post-Independence Indian literature. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharata from the point of view of Bhimasena, is widely credited as his masterpiece.
At the age of 20, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam for Valarthumrigangal at World Short Story Competition jointly conducted by New York Herald Tribune, Hindustan Times, and Mathrubhumi. His first major novel, Naalukettu (The Legacy), written at the age of 23, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958. His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu (The Demon Seed), and Randamoozham (The Second Turn). The emotional experiences of his early days went into his novels, and most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture. His three novels set in traditional tharavads in Kerala are Naalukettu, Asuravithu, and Kaalam.
Nair was a screenwriter and director of Malayalam films. He directed seven films and wrote the screenplay for around 54 films. He won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times, for: Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992), and Parinayam (1994), which is the most by anyone in the screenplay category. In 1995 he was awarded the highest literary award in India, Jnanpith, for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. In 2005, India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, was awarded to him.

Another book by M.T. and another five-star rating from me. There is no surprise in it as each book by him is brilliant in every way, and I simply love reading them.

There have been so many books discussing the time frame of the transition of the world from a feudalistic to a socialistic one. This book by M.T. is one of the best among them.

ഓരോ എംടി കൃതി കയ്യിലെടുക്കുമ്പോഴും പ്രതീക്ഷ വാനോളം ഉണ്ടാകും, ആ പ്രതീക്ഷകളെക്കാള്‍ എത്രയോ ഉയരത്തില്‍ ചെന്നാണ് ഓരോ കൃതിയുടെയും ആസ്വാദനം നില്‍ക്കാറ്!

ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചുതുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ കരുതിയിരുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ അനേകം മടങ്ങ് ഗംഭീരം.

'രണ്ടാമൂഴം' എന്ന അത്ഭുതത്തേക്കാള്‍ മികച്ച മറ്റൊരു എംടി കൃതി എനിക്ക് വായിച്ച് തീര്‍ക്കാന്‍ ഉണ്ടെന്ന് സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍പ്പോലും കരുതിയിരുന്നില്ല! എനിക്ക് തെറ്റി.

എംടി എന്ന രണ്ടക്ഷരം എന്നെ അതിശയിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് തുടര്‍ന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുന്നു!

'അസുരവിത്ത്' സിനിമ കാണാൻ പോയത് പ്രേംനസീർ എന്ന മാറ്റിനി ഐഡലിനോടുള്ള ആരാധന കൊണ്ടാണ്. നന്നെ ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽക്കണ്ട ചിത്രത്തിൽ മനസ്സിൽത്തെളിഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നത് ഈയൊരു രംഗം മാത്രമാണ്; തന്നെ തല്ലാനാഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്ന എട്ടുപത്താളുടെ നേരെ മുണ്ടു മടക്കിക്കുത്തി, നെഞ്ചുവിരിച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്ന പ്രതിനായകൻ. അതുപക്ഷേ, പ്രേംനസീറായിരുന്നില്ല; താഴത്തേതിലെ ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടി എന്ന അസുരവിത്തായിരുന്നു. സിനിമ കഴിഞ്ഞു തിയേറ്റർ വിട്ടിറങ്ങുമ്പോഴും ആരാധന മുഴുവൻ ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടി എന്ന തെറിച്ചവനോടായിരുന്നു.

എം. ടി. യുടെ തൂലിക അനശ്വരനാക്കിയ ഈ നായകകഥാപാത്രം പിന്നീട് പല രൂപങ്ങളിൽ അവതാരമെടുക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടു; 'രണ്ടാമൂഴ'ത്തിലെ ഭീമനായും, 'ഒരു വടക്കൻ വീരഗാഥ'യിലെ ചന്തുവായും... ജീവിതത്തിൽ പരാജയങ്ങൾ മാത്രം ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങാൻ വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട, എന്നും രണ്ടാമനായ ശപ്തജന്മം. പക്ഷെ പിൽക്കാലത്തിറങ്ങിയ മീശപിരിക്കുന്ന ഫ്യൂഡൽ ആൺബിംബങ്ങളെക്കാൾ മിഴിവുള്ള ഈ പ്രതിനായകനോട് എന്നും ആരാധനയായിരുന്നു.

'അസുരവിത്ത്' എന്ന നോവൽ സിനിമയ്ക്കും എത്രയോ പതിന്മടങ്ങ് മുകളിലാണെന്ന് ഈ വൈകിയ വേളയിൽ അതു വായിച്ചപ്പോൾത്തോന്നി. സിനിമയിലില്ലാത്ത ഒരുപാട് ആഴങ്ങളുണ്ടീ കൃതിയിൽ. ഇത് ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടിയുടെ മാത്രം കഥയല്ല; ഫ്യൂഡലിസത്തിന്റെ അസ്തമന ഘട്ടത്തിലെ കേരളത്തിന്റെ കഥയാണ്. മാറിവരുന്ന സാമൂഹിക ചുറ്റുപാടുകളുടെ കഥയാണ്. ഒരു പറ്റം മനുഷ്യരിലൂടെ എം. ടി. അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് ഒരു ജനതയെത്തന്നെയാണ്.

താനല്ലാത്ത മറ്റെല്ലാ വിളകളെയും നശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സസ്യങ്ങളെയാണ് അസുരവിത്തുകളായെണ്ണുക. അങ്ങനെ നോക്കുമ്പോൾ ഗോവിന്ദൻ കുട്ടി ഒരു പാവം പടുമുള മാത്രമാണ്; തറവാടു ക്ഷയിച്ച കാലത്ത് മദ്ധ്യവയസ്സു കഴിഞ്ഞ അമ്മയ്ക്കു പിറന്നതു കൊണ്ട്, എല്ലാ ദൗർഭാഗ്യങ്ങളും ഈ "ആറാം തമ്പത്തി"ൽ ജനിച്ച ഹതഭാഗ്യന്റെ തലയിൽ കെട്ടിവെയ്ക്കപ്പെടുകയാണ്. ജീവിക്കാനുള്ള തത്രപ്പാടിൽ, പണക്കാരനായ സ്വന്തം അളിയൻ കുഴിച്ച ചതിക്കുഴിയിൽ വീഴുമ്പോഴാണ് ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടി ശരിക്കും ഒരസുരവിത്തായി മാറുന്നത്. പിന്നീട്, നായന്മാരുടേയും മാപ്പിളമാരുടേയും കിടമത്സരത്തിൽ ഒരു കരുവാകുന്നതോടെ അയാളുടെ പതനം പൂർണ്ണമാകുന്നു. നാടിനെ ഒന്നടങ്കം ശവപ്പറമ്പാക്കി മാറ്റുന്ന നടപ്പുദീനത്തിന്റെ താണ്ഡവത്തിലാണ് ഗോവിന്ദൻ കുട്ടി വീണ്ടും ഉയിർത്തെഴുന്നേൽക്കുന്നത്.

കഴിഞ്ഞ നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഈ കൃതി ഇരുപത്തൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ആദ്യപാദത്തിൽ വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ, ബഹുഭൂരിപക്ഷം ജനങ്ങളും പട്ടിണിയിൽക്കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്ന, ഉച്ചനീചത്വങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞ കേരളം നമ്മെ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ഇത് ഓണ വീഡിയോകളിലെ സമൃദ്ധിയുടെ ഗൃഹാതുരത്വമല്ല, മറിച്ച് ഇല്ലായ്മയുടെ കറുത്ത ചിത്രമാണ് വരച്ചിടുന്നത്. ഈ മണ്ണിൽ അസുരവിത്തുകൾ മുള പൊട്ടിയില്ലെങ്കിലേ അത്ഭുതമുള്ളൂ. കാരണം, വിളയെന്നു കൊട്ടിഗ്ഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പലതും യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ കളയായിരുന്നു എന്നു നമ്മെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് ഇവയാണ്.

Though I admire M T sir's story telling skills like all other readers around the world, this story was a bit hard for me not because of the wrong decisions of the hero to get converted to islam and then getting out of it to realise that he is a mere human without any religion.... but may be due to the high degree of pessimistic thoughts going through the minds of hero through out... it may be realistic...but I wish to be little idealistic at times..like all of u...

പരാജയങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രം ഏറ്റു വാങ്ങി ,ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അറിയപ്പെടാത്ത വഴികളിലൂടെ അയാള്‍ തന്നെ അറിയാതെ നടക്കുകയാണ്

ഒരിക്കലും കര കയറാന്‍ പറ്റാത്ത കയങ്ങളില്‍ എത്തിപ്പെടുന്ന ഗോവിന്ദന്കുട്ടി അവിടെ നിന്നും തന്റെ ജീവിതം വീണ്ടും തുടങ്ങുകയാണ്.

വയസ്സാൻ കാലത്ത് ഉണ്ടായ പുത്രനാണ് ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടി. അവനെ ഒരു അസുരവിത്ത് ആയിട്ടാണ് സ്വന്തം അമ്മപോലും കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. മൂത്തമകളായ മാധവി വിവാഹം കഴിഞ്ഞ് സുഖമായി കഴിയുന്നു, മകനായ കുമാരനും സുഖം തന്നെ. വിവാഹം കഴിക്കാത്ത കുഞ്ഞുകുട്ടി എന്ന സഹോദരി വീട്ടിൽ തന്നെയുണ്ട്. ഗർഭിണിയായ മീനാക്ഷിയെ കൊണ്ട് ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടിയെ വിവാഹം കഴിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ചതി മനസ്സിലായ ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടി ഈ വിവാഹത്തിന് കാരണക്കാരനായ ശേഖരനെ കൊല്ലാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. പിന്നീടുള്ള ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടിയുടെ മതം മാറ്റവും നാടുവിടലുമൊക്കെയാണിതിൽ പറയുന്നത്. വിതസന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങളുടെ അയുക്തികതയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഊറിവരുന്ന സംഘര്‍ഷങ്ങളുടെ സമാഹാരമാണ് ഈ നോവല്‍. ഇതൊരു വ്യക്തിയുടെയോ കുറെ വ്യക്തികളുടെയോ കഥ മാത്രമല്ല; ഒരു ദേശത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രവും കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ രൂപരേഖയുമാണ്. എം.ടി. വാസുദേവന്‍ നായരുടെ നോവലുകളില്‍വച്ച് എന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടിയില്‍ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ചത് അസുരവിത്താണ്.

M t is gifted with a language. A language that can show us imaginary worlds,can induce pain, can make people miserable.



I did fall for this. And the next thing I did was grabbing another two books of MT, Naalukett and Kaalam. Then I realized that the 3 books are 3 roads taken from a dead end.


Honestly the initial part of the book is same. Setting,people,names all resembles each other. They reach a dead end and then took three different paths. And I must say that this choice they made make them different. As dumbledore said in Harry potter books 'The choice we made in our lives makes us what we are,not what we think or where we are from'.

As a parting tribute to Late MT, I read this book which had been sitting in my shelf for more than 10 years.

This is a testament of losses and the helplessness of a bunch of people who got stuck in between changes in societal structure.
The introduction of Makkathaayam and decentralisation of the power helped many, but there were a lot of victims who cannot adapt themselves with the change. And I can connect with these people because I can find similar people in my own family's past. Every character in MT's stories are grey like how in real life and we could empathise with each and everyone even if they were cunning in times.

I love the little light of hope the ending holds.

വായന കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ സന്തോഷം തോന്നിയില്ല. മനസ്സിനെ ഈറനണിയിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ഗോവിന്ദൻകുട്ടിയും കുഞ്ഞോപ്പോളും,ലക്ഷ്മിയും അവശേഷിക്കുന്നു. സുന്ദരമായ വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ പച്ചമനുഷ്യനെ വരച്ചുകാട്ടുന്ന എം.ടി, നമ്മളൊക്കെ എത്രയോ ഭാഗ്യവാൻമാരാണ് എന്ന് ചിന്തിപ്പിച്ചു. ഒന്ന് മാത്രം നഷ്ട്ടബോധം ഉണ്ടാക്കി അസുരവിത്തിൽ കണ്ട പ്രകൃതി കേരളത്തെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു പോയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവ് (അല്ല പുറംകാൽ കൊണ്ട് ചവിട്ടി പുറത്തെറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു ). ജീവിതത്തെ കുറിച്ച് അറിയാനുള്ളതെല്ലാം വായിച്ചു തീർത്ത അനുഭവം.ഒന്നുറപ്പ് ഈ ജീവിതങ്ങളെ ഞാനൊരിക്കലും മറക്കില്ല.

ഒരു നേർത്ത വേദനയോടെയല്ലാതെ ഗോവിന്ദൻ കുട്ടിയുടെയും കിഴക്കുംമുറിയുടെയും കഥ വായിച്ചു തീർക്കാൻ പറ്റില്ല. കുഞ്ഞോപ്പോളെ എന്ന് വിളിച്ചു അവൻ തിരിച്ചു വരും എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കാൻ ആണ് ഇഷ്ട്ടം !
