The New Texas Storm haven't won a game in two hundred years, because every game ends in a tie.
Following a worldwide pandemic and The Concord, which brought peace to a troubled post-apocalyptic world, winning was condemned as primitive behavior. Since then, citizens have been divided into two classes: a wealthy class who lives forever and a lower class of Temporals who just try to live.
Soccer player Ledger Dent has been offered an opportunity to join the wealthy Eternals, which seems to be a triumph until he meets an old coach and slowly begins to unravel why competition is unacceptable. It’s then that he realizes more than his personal glory hinges on a victory.
In 200 yrs. the New Texas Storm (soccer team) had never won a game. Holistech sponsors the Storm. The soccer players can also work there also. Randolph Gaines is the, CEO, Chief of Research & supervisor at Holistech. Ledger Dent (wing, Temporal) works there. Leger’s family is: his dad who is deceased, his Ma, Heidi (15, sister) & Simon (brother, medical disability). Brecke (striker) & Fally (goalie) are Ledger’s teammates/friends.
Ledger & Colie Gaines (Randolph adopted daughter) met at Holistech & have become an item.
Colie is going to show him what it’s like to be an Eternal (upper class PPL). She invites Leger to a clubhouse in Olympus Heights where her Dad Randolph is sponsoring the New Manhattan (artist work). She has to help so he sits with Trenton Taft (striker) who once played for New Texas Storm but is now an Eternal. He tells him something very bizarre about Colie.
After practice his elderly friend Arth (Bear, former Dallas Fury, striker) took him to everyone’s favorite spot The Pitch (pub) & told him the tale of the Temporal (lower class PPL) who came when the Concord (war) was over & the deadly virus that had once wiped out most of the U.S. population. The survivors had become immune to the disease & were outcasts. They became the Temporal (Lower class PPL). Randolph Gaines of Holistech had developed the vaccine. Not everyone survived the shot though, worse case-scenario they weren’t aging properly.
Low/behold Trenton shows up at the Pitch & also warns him again about Randolph Gaines & Arth.
Later, Randolph calls Ledger & Colie to his office. The so called cards are laid out on the table for him.
Arth becomes his training coach & invites him over for dinner where he meets Maya (Moons) his daughter. The 3 discuss Ledger’s ultimatum. Ledger & his Ma/family also have a similar conversation.
What path of life will Ledger choose? Why has the New Texas Storm ever won a game? Who will Ledger fall in love with?
Karl Marx would love this book.
We never had soccer when I was growing up. In HS I played hockey, basketball, football, baseball, & track/field. I was a dedicated gym rat. As an adult I coached/played softball (coed, men’s), volleyball (coed, men’s) & basketball (men’s). For amusement/fun; pool, ski (snow/water), tennis, golf, bowling. I coached recreational girls/boys soccer for 9 yrs. I love to watch the World Cup, KC Storm, & my son (MBA). He plays soccer yr. round indoor/outdoor. He played HS baseball, basketball, football, soccer & ran cross country. Soccer, Rugby, & tennis in college. He now does lots of triathlons, & did his very 1st/only Iron Man. I have 2 beautiful/educated young granddaughters who are trying to follow in their mom’s (twin daughter) footsteps. She played HS/college softball/basketball/volleyball. She now among lots of hats (wife, mother, LCMSW) a HS volleyball coach. Her other twin is in heaven.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written fantasy book. It was very easy to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar errors, no typo errors, or any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make great fantasy movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.
Thank you for the free book (Author) Tony Parsons MSW (Washburn)
This book was a fast read that definitely will appeal to young male readers. I read it in one day anxious to determine Ledger Dent's fate. The ending was not predictable - always a plus. The ending seemed a little anti-climatic by resorting to multiple epilogues to wrap up the fate of the characters and the world. Overall, a strong addition to my classroom library.
Love this book. It's an interesting society with a completely lovable MC who you'll be rooting for right from the get-go. The tension is what kept me reading, while the characters stayed with me long after I finished.
When I began this book I want aware it was supposed to be written for teens and having just finished I still don't feel it's just for teens. The message is clear and entertaining. This isn't a long epic novel but it is a great read that left me feeling good, left me remembering we all need to stand up-loudly declaring for what is right-or we might lose everything. I would recommend this book for anyone. It was a fairly short read but still very thought provoking. The author was great at making the characters come to life, at making me feel like I was in the story. I see that this book is called part of the 'Athens Plague Series' so I am really hoping this story about these characters I've come to know and care about, continues on. I'm definitely recommending this book to anyone who'd like a really good story without adding offensive language-it would be a great book to be read add a family and discussed after each reading. :)
I am very glad I managed to get this book on Amazon when it was made a freebie for a couple of days. I was first attracted to this book because of its cover (guilty as charged). I don't recall ever reading a dystopian novel about sports, so this was a really pleasant surprise. Although I don't play, I do like watching football (that's soccer for y'all).
I liked the plot, I liked the characters and I liked the way epilogue was handled. But, I think the love back-story escalated too quickly and I'd like to find out what happens to a character who had big influence on Ledger.
This novel was super intriguing and beautifully written! It explored what society would be like if there was no competition, no winning or losing. The characters were richly drawn, and I particularly loved the main character, Ledger. Great story! I would love to read a sequel!
