Written and performed by “the internet’s princess” (Dazed), Sabrina Brier’s That Friend is a singular, hilarious full-cast audiobook that follows an aspiring NYC influencer whose advice podcast takes off while her real life falls apart.
Sabrina, the self-proclaimed queen of the West Village, feels destined for greatness. While her three best friends have each settled into their careers, she’s still working odd jobs to stay afloat. She dreams of channeling her immense creative potential into…something. So she decides to do what no twenty-something has ever done before—start a podcast.
She has a knack for giving good advice (even if she can’t follow it herself), and as her show gains a following, she gets a taste of the internet stardom she’s always dreamed of. Meanwhile, her offline life is falling apart: her dad won’t help her pay rent for much longer; her elusive finance bro crush is always just out of reach; even her best friends can’t stand by her increasingly chaotic and narcissistic behavior, especially when she uses their real personal issues as juicy material for the show.
Will her newfound fans see the cracks in her Instagram-worthy facade? Or is she so delusional that this just might work?
Told with the same unique blend of wit, theatrical style, and acute emotional honesty that make her TikTok videos so wildly popular, Sabrina Brier’s That Friend explores painfully relatable relationship dynamics, and what it means to be young and fabulous in New York City. Her most ambitious project yet, Sabrina’s audio debut is a celebration of female friendship and an unforgettable listening experience.
However, the MC is soooooo incredibly infuriating and annoying. I almost DNF this one but decided to stick it out because it was such a short book and in the end I did like it overall.
I adored her friends and Jack so much.
I think I’m just not the target audience for this one. This is more for people who regularly say things like “slay queen,” “deadass” etc. I’m too old (41) for this book so it just annoyed me most of the time.
People in their teens up through early 30s would probably totally vibe with this one.
Hilarious. Truly laugh out loud funny, sweet, charming, and the perfect escape on your drive to work. Absolutely love Sabrina's TikTok and this book did NOT disappoint!! Cannot wait to see what this brilliant Diva does next.
sorry to the haters, this was good! it's really well produced as an audiobook and would also work so well as a miniseries or movie. i'm personally rooting for sabrina brier ✊🏻
Sabrina Brier is a comedic influencer, whose TikTok skits feature privileged and self-involved characters. She wrote and performed, with an entire cast, this audiobook about a girl living in New York City who is a bit lost and trying to find her way. She decides a “real job” is not right for her, and pursues an advice podcast. She is determined to build her brand and empire! Along the way, her personal life and dealings with friends, family and boys goes awry. If you know me, you know this is not my usual type of thing. I don’t even have TikTok and have no idea who Connor Woods or anyone is. But I was approached with a free copy of the audiobook to listen and review! I was surprised by the lessons and meanings one could glean from this story, underneath all of the absurdity. On the surface, it may seem ridiculous, but there are actually some really good life lessons underneath it all and components people can relate to. Once I got used to it, it was quite funny too!
It is a satire, so everything is exaggerated. The characters are annoying and over-the-top, because they are a caricature of certain personality types and traits. You have to be able to accept this in order to enjoy it. Exaggerated satires are not for everyone. The FMC, Sabrina, is spoiled and privileged and a lot, but essentially she is just trying to find her way and figure her path in life out. Aren’t we all! I actually admire how she always looks at things positively and sure, she’s a bit delulu, but she doesn’t let anything knock her down. She keeps striving. At its core, this is a story of chasing your dreams and goals in the face of backlash, or others not believing in you. It’s a story of female friendship and remembering who has always been there for you. It’s a story of figuring oneself out. The full cast audio production was so fun and well done! Love all the added sound effects and music. I enjoyed this more than I expected to! While not my usual thing, I am not going to negatively judge something for being exactly what it’s marketed as. I don’t think I am the ideal audience for this, but there is absolutely an audience for this out there.
Thank you to Sabrina Brier herself for providing a copy!
2.5 rounded up? 0-30% - adjusting to caring about the story even though the characters are annoying 30-60% actually pleasantly surprised by how much i’m enjoying this 60-90% ughhhhhhhhhhh the most derivative sh*t 90-100% okay go off jack!!
I need more audiobooks like this! The cast (Connor Wood, Rachel Dratch, Nicola Coughlan and Rachel Zegler) felt like they were picked just for me. The vibe, music, and sound effects made it so cozy and immersive.
This is my formal request to have coffee shop ambience and footstep sounds in the background of all audiobooks from now on. I’m begging 🙏🏼
The story, though, wasn’t as strong. The main character was super frustrating at times, but I did love her character arc.
It’s a funny, entertaining and quick listen about finding your way and prioritizing female friendships. If you’re a fan of Sabrina or Connor Wood, this is totally worth it!
This is my type of audiobook through and through. Had a lovely time. Feel better after reading it. Sabrina really understood the 20-something coming of age rom com genre.
I'm so torn on how to feel about this. Firstly, the audiobook is incredible (thank you Libro.fm for the ARC) but I had so much cringe. Yet it was giving Alexis Rose, who is a queen. What a ride, but we have stopped middle of the road.
Sabrina is starting out as a podcaster, trying to find her way and purpose in life. Her twenty-something friend group is cautious, but supportive of her. until she uses their experiences and she becomes “that friend.” The humerous plot is real, relatable and so on trend with the times, the MFC has so much growth and development-naive and somewhat unlikable to start but charming at the end. This gave off Friends vibes in the best way. The author-actress and comedian Sabrina Brier, is one of the narrators and her enthusiasm, emotions and honesty are spot on. The full cast and sound effects make for such an immersive listening experience-it was like watching a tv show with your eyes closed. Hanks to Simon Audio for the ALC-thoughts are honest and voluntary. 3.75 stars
this absolutely MUST be done as an audiobook!! I loveeeeee ensemble casts for audiobooks and this one was so fun! Loved to see Sabrina’s humor translate from screen to book. Also for an audiobook that was only 4 hours and some change this felt so detailed and full without feeling like the story was rushed or unfinished.
Thank you to @Simon.Audio and the author @SabrinaBrier for the #gifted audiobook.
Sabrina Brier’s That Friend is a sharp, funny, and painfully relatable look at the life of an aspiring NYC influencer whose podcast takes off just as her real life starts to unravel. Told in a lively, theatrical style, the full-cast audiobook brings the story to life in a way that feels like a “movie for the ears,” reminiscent of a graphic audio experience.
At first, the main character comes off as unlikeable—self-absorbed, obsessed with her image, and a little out of touch—but as the story unfolds, she becomes more engaging. Her journey of growth and self-awareness makes the ending especially satisfying. Fans of Brier’s TikTok will appreciate the same brand of humor and honesty that made her videos so popular.
While the book is definitely geared toward a younger audience—especially those fluent in internet slang like “slay”—it still delivers plenty of laugh-out-loud moments that make it an entertaining listen. If you enjoy satirical takes on influencer culture with a heartfelt character arc, this one is worth checking out!
What a great full cast! This one gets bonus stars for the multi-voice narration and really fun audiobook vibes. More of a 3⭐️ review of the actual story.
This is a high energy NYC adventure featuring Sabrina as she tries to find her way and make a career choice that’s financially lucrative so her dad won’t cut her off and make her move home. She parlays her exuberant and talkative personality into a podcast. Her friends are along for the ride, with support as well as annoyance as Sabrina seems to be completely self absorbed. As the main character Sabrina has some endearing clueless but lovable qualities, but she’s also very annoying and frustrating. She’s almost too much. But the story has some redemption for her character with some personal growth by the end.
This is mostly cute and fun - and it’s short. With the great cast and production the audio is a fun listen.
These full cast audiobooks are such a fun way to experience audiobooks. I love the sound effects and with all the various voices makes you feel like you are in the middle of the story.
I would say this is a coming of age story about Sabrina. The dialogue and her actions seems appropriate for her age but it felt a bit shallow at the same time. Sabrina came off for me a bit too privileged.
I did enjoy the exploration of friendships as you get older, trying to figure out your next steps in life.
Love Sabrina Brier so I was excited to listen to this book! I wasn’t sure about this book at the beginning, but I appreciated that the main character was flawed and worked to better herself. It wrapped up nicely!
3.5/5 This was a cutesy quick read, I listened to the audiobook on Spotify. Nothing exceptional but was definitely a feel good story about business and friendship; if you’re looking for a romance book this definitely isn’t it but was still a fun book to listen to in the car!
Listened as an audiobook - it did what it needed to do! I could not stop listening to it at all! It made me laugh out loud on many parts and had an interesting story. The ending was kind of predictable but there were lots of twists and turns in the story that made it worth sticking with to find out the plot.
i don’t know if this really counts as a book. buuut i had fun and i love connor wood and i love books where the moral of the story is abt prioritizing your friendships but also there’s a romantic component <3
Cute listen! It took a second to get used to the unique format, but I enjoyed it! Definitely more of a cool audio/podcast experience than a traditional audiobook.
