Very interesting book, well illustrated too. The disappearances are presented in succint text, a good starter book peaking my interest in a few previously unheard of cases.

THE DISAPPEARED is an engaging concoction of real-life disappearances that were never conclusively solved, compiled well by author Ian Crofton. There were 35 rather than the 50 listed above in my volume. The accounts are arranged chronologically, beginning with ancient history (an army lost in the desert) and moving through to the 1970s. None are more than a few pages in length, making this a very fast book to read.

The book has a few missteps, such as the random handwritten passages in every section, which seem to be included just to break up the text, but there are good illustrations and, most importantly, the writing is succinct and lively. Some of the disappearances are more interesting than others, and there's a good mix of the famous (the Mary Celeste, for example) with the less well-known. The most tragic are those centred around WW2 as well as deaths of famous aviators and aviatrixes.

Typical of the books one finds on the bargain racks at bookstores, this is an interesting read but not much more. Author Ian Crofton describes several cases of people who disappeared (hence the title). The entries vary in entertainment value. For my taste, I like the genuinely mysterious disappearances such as the Mary Celeste or the Roanoke colony (even though both cases had perfectly reasonable potential explanations). On the other hand, some of the cases are just too obvious. For example, is it any wonder that the Franklin expedition vanished into the ice while looking for the fabled Northwest Passage? Or perhaps that one doesn’t interest me because I already read Dan Simmons's huge novel on the subject. In any event, if you need a serious history lesson, seek elsewhere. But if you’d like something vaguely distracting, this fills the bill.
