Antitype is the prequel to acclaimed novels, Archetype and Prototype.
Before Emma appears in their lives, two men face four months that will change their lives forever. One has dreams outside Richmond and away from his family business. The other wants to make the business his only focus. In one summer, outside forces drive them both to make brash and irrevocable decisions that will render them at once supremely powerful yet emotionally vulnerable. How can these peers with identical pasts, as well as seemingly identical futures, reach a threshold where only one escapes with his integrity intact?
M.D. WATERS lives with her family in Maryland. When she isn’t writing edge-of-your-seat science fiction thrillers, abusing her muse, or random dancing, she's writing USA Today Bestselling romances as MISTY D. WATERS.
Her first novel, ARCHETYPE, was nominated for a RT Reviewers' Choice award, on the Texas Library Association's 2015 Lariat Reading List, listed on Popsugar.com's The Best Books of 2014, and voted "Best Sex" by the A.V. Club's Pages Most Likely to Succeed: Our Favorite Books of 2014 (so far). Her other works, ANTITYPE & PROTOTYPE, are available now.
The first thing you should know is that this is told from Declan and Noah's respective perspectives and that we only see Emma at the very end. If you're expecting to learn more about her relationships with either, you're going to be a little disappointed.
Instead, this novella helps us learn more about Declan and Noah. Because we only know them from Emma's perspective (and because so much of Archetype is confusing and Emma doesn't really remember either of them all that well), this is a very valuable thing.
I am definitely Team Noah, but I appreciated getting to see a better side of Declan. And it was interesting to see exactly how each person became the way they were. (When we met them in Archetype, they were pretty well established, personality-wise.)
I hope there will be another book set in this world, and even more hopeful that it will be released soon. I really love these characters and books.
Highly recommended. (And for those of you who haven't read Prototype---sorry to rub it in---this will definitely help fill the void. If you haven't read Archetype, change that immediately.)
This novella shows us why our hero and anti-hero (which is which is your prerogative) became who they were. And in the centre of their plights is Emma; the woman that inadvertently (and unknowingly) steered their respective destinies. Ms. Waters' publicist said this will ease some of the pain of waiting for Prototype, but I respectfully disagree. It did not soothe anything; it just fanned the flame of my miserable want to murderous degree.
This is a MUST read for fans of the Archtype and Prototype! This is a short story set in the months prior to the raid that freed Emma and is told from the perspective of Noah and Declan. My only complaint is that it is so short. I loved being in each of these men’s head and feel that we get a better understanding of how these men became who they are. We also get a better idea of what all is wrong with this world and society. Short answer: Men with unparalleled and unchecked power run amok. This story answered a lot of questions I had after reading Prototype, but also left me wanting even more. I SO want to see this society changed!
I’m still a fan of Declan, and am heartbroken to learn of how he became the bad guy for this series. I am almost as outraged for what happen to him as to what it is like for females living in this world. He was controlled and manipulated as much as they were. Then there is Noah. I like him even more now that I’ve learned so much about him. It was also interesting to meet so many other members of his family. It would be interesting to follow their lives for a while as well. I think good things could be seen from them too.
This book sparks a lot of outrage in me for the way some of the characters are treated, hell how one half of the human species is treated. I hope Ms. Waters continues and finds a way to liberate the female population in the world she created. I so want to be there when the men that created these rules for face justice for what they have created.
Great read! Answers many questions and gives us a perspective of what life is like that we don’t get from the other two books.
A prequel novella that does a great job of giving a picture of what made Noah and Declan the men they are in Archetype, flipping back and forth between two seemingly unrelated storylines (and POV's).
Not a standard beginning-middle-end storyline, Antitype is each man's narrative of the pivotal four months prior to each meeting Emma. As explained in the book's description, they come from very similar backgrounds and each has a set idea of what they want out of life, but end up in very different positions by the end of the novella.
This will leave you wanting to read more (I am anxiously waiting for the paperback release of Prototype), but slightly conflicted about one of these men if you have read Archetype (which I highly recommend). Well worth the $1.99 (plus tax) on Amazon's US site. 4.5 stars
Omg!!! This was so good, and I can't believe that is it, the end. I want need more! Pretty please?
But seriously, I'm in love with these characters! And I absolutely loved the glimpse into Noah's and Declan's life before the events of Archetype and Prototype. It was great to see what drove them and made them the men they are. Interesting enough, I found a lot of similarities between Noah and Declan initially, but the way their families (or rather their fathers) shaped their future passes in life varied drastically. I felt really sad for Declan, but at the end he chose his pass himself and he had to live with the consequences...
Great read for the fans of the series! Highly recommended.
Wow. I've already read & loved both Prototype & Antitype, so I shouldn't have been surprised at how quickly this book sucked me into this world. But I was totally engulfed sooo quickly. I was busy rooting equally for both heroes and was blown away with the emotional journeys they took in so few pages. I loved them. I loved the story. I can't let this world go!
This is a prequel to Archetype and Prototype, and introduces us to both Noah and Declan in their younger days, dealing with overbearing fathers and finding out who they really are and what they're meant to do. Antitype is relatively short, but it's a nice addition to the existing stories. Recommended for those who have read the two novels and want just a little bit more.
It gave me goosebumps at the end cuz it was just that good. It brought back feelings of the main duology. It was great reading about Declan's and Noah's pasts. I even sympathized with Declan even though I hated him inthe main books. And I wanted to read more of Noah on how he made the decision to open a securities company, but oh, well. Okay, I'm just flailing about it. Go read the series.
I loved this novella. It was so interesting to learn about each of them Declan and Noah. I found the novella particularly helpful for understanding Declan's split personality and for further establishing Noah's strength of feelings for Emma.
My only complaint is that the read was shorter than I would have preferred - it was satisfying, but I want more. I just finished reading, and am just shaken. This was definitely an intense read, full of suspense, love, heartache, violence, explanation, and abuse. It was great to understand both Noah and Declan a bit more, and to learn what has helped cast them into the roles they played. If you've read Archetype and Prototype, absolutely read this as well.
It’s different. The way it is wrote is definitely a change from how the first 2 were wrote up but definitely a great read. I’ve read the series 3 times
Antitype is set just a few months earlier from the events in Archetype, when Declan and Noah are still young enough, at a point where their next decisions will make them become the men they will end up being. As Archetype is told from Emma’s perspective, Antitype focuses on Declan and Noah – each chapter being told from one or the other’s point of view.
What I liked about this novella is that both are in fact good guys, although their decisions with put them on the other side of the fence.
Learning more about Declan here, I really sympathize with him. He is truly a good guy, but too weak to oppose what he feels is wrong with this society, so he finally gives in. I think he never really became bad (like his father), but he did choose the other side.
For Noah the decision to join the resistance was made easy by things that happened without him being able to do anything about them. It is when he realized that these things shouldn’t happen and if he can do anything about them as a rebel, then he would.
I loved this novella, and even though it is not even 100 pages long, I found it well rounded, the perfect intro to the events that would follow in Archetype.
3.5 stars This is a prequel novella to Archetype, and it features the two main male leads, Declan and Noah. Though it is a prequel, it almost relies on having read Archetype to know who the characters are and how they fit into the series, to care about their story.
It was a quick read, with the story alternating between two men who have similar backgrounds--rich with dreams beyond inheriting their fathers' companies-- but end up taking very directions in their lives. As in Archetype, the sci-fi elements are hinted at--a future where women who are fertile are a valued commodity to be bought by the highest buyer. It's sci-fi lite but is nicely written overall and nice knowing about these characters' past.
Really great supplement story. It is a must read for this series. It should be read after Archetype so as to not ruin the mystery of the story.
Antitype gives us insight into the lives of Declan and Noah previous to when we meet them in Archetype. I loved this story because it truly adds to the series versus other supplemental stories that are written just to appease the audience with more story. This is a purposeful and well written book, and you definitely start to understand the good and bad behind both characters. It makes your really think about which male lead is the 'right' choice and what defines their personalities. This story has pumped me up even more to read Prototype and see how Declan and Noah evolve.
Great little read! This novella gives us a glimpse into the minds of Declan and Noah in the months leading up to Archetype. It was interesting to see things from their point of view and learn about what experiences shaped who they are and who they will become. It left me wanting more, that's for sure! Can't wait for Prototype! But I need to refresh my mind on the ins and outs of Archetype again! ;)
Absolutely fantastic prequel to Archetype/Prototype. Was fascinating to read about how Noah and Declan became who they are and how they got to be where they did. I recommend for anyone who enjoyed the Prototype nooks!
Short and sweet prequel to the duology. It's interesting to see Noah and Declan before they met Emma. Both with fathers who are less than loving. Declan with dreams that are quashed. Noah as protective as ever.
It was a wonderful glimpse into who these characters were. I would have loved the other books so much more had I read this. It gave them a depth that was missing
Note that this is a novella that should definitely be read AFTER reading Archetype and Prototype as this mini book just gives details on Declan and Noah.
I like getting the perspective from Declan and Noah. This was an interesting take from their perspectives and I like hearing more about them before Emma.
