A very basic book for beginners

For me, this would be rated a 3, but I began to look past myself and see what it might offer for someone totally new to writing not only poetry, but writing...anything. For that effort, it gets 5 stars, ergo, my settling on 4. If you need to know basics like where to sit and write or what to write about, this book is a great tool for you. If you are looking to dissect and name each type of poetry, you will have a gem and a keeper for your toolkit shelf.

For a longtime writer of poetry, such as myself, I didn't come away with a sense of knowing anything I couldn't live without.

While not a bad book, I found it overly simplistic and lacking details at least for my learning intents. A decent read for anyone who just wants to know the very, very basics of different types of poetry/verse.

In all fairness I didn't get to spend a lot of time with this book and will probably try again later. I did not like how it started out. If I return, then we'll see if it gets any better.

I enjoyed learning more about poetry. The explanations and examples were excellent. I thought this was a great writing tool to improve my art, and I will be returning to it again and again.

Very clearly written by teachers, by which I mean it reads like a textbook — unfortunately, imo this is completely at odds with its subject. Excruciatingly detailed attempts to define the minutiae, which is fine for an indepth-reference but not so much the beginner's guide I thought it was meant to be. Some interesting exercises and examples (though haikus aren't just for kids! Also I was quite bemused by some of the chapter groupings), but definitely not a go-to source.

Tina Eliopulos and Todd Moffett were among the most talented writers, teachers and editors in the Master of Creative Writing program at Eastern Washington University when I was there twenty years ago--I hate to admit it's really been that long.
