To be chosen as a lady-in-waiting for Queen Mary is more than just an honor for Countess it’s a matter of life and death. After her brother is captured on the battlefield, Margaretha hopes the queen’s favor will allow her entry into circles of the powerful elite. There she will leverage her irresistible charm to secure her brother’s release. But as the victim of an unfortunate case of shyness, Margaretha’s feminine wiles are sorely lacking. Her only hope of achieving her aim is to practice the arts of flirtation on a man she should never fall in love with.
As a huntsman’s page, Friedrich has had enough of nobles to last him a lifetime, so when Countess Margaretha asks for his help, he has no intention of saying yes—until she offers a bargain he cannot refuse, giving him the ability to decipher a puzzling letter from his past. Soon, harmless lessons evolve into something more as Friedrich finds himself falling for the beautiful countess, but Margaretha’s plan to save her brother is not her only deceit. She is harboring a shocking secret, the weight of which may shatter the romance blossoming with Friedrich.
Left-turn-avoider. Aspiring time traveler. Enthusiastic interrupter.

This was a wonderful debut rich with description, a great gothic atmosphere, and a historical romance with nods to Snow White. I don’t read retellings very often, but when I read the synopsis for this one, I knew I had to read it... and it did not disappoint! I loved the characters (Friedrich is my favorite), the beautiful messages, the laugh-out-loud moments, and the unexpected plot twists. You can tell how much research, time, and dedication Rachel put into this book.
I will definitely be reading more books she writes in the future!❤️
If you love historical romance and retellings of any kind, I highly recommend checking this book out!

You know, I didn't know what to expect of this story but chapters in I realized I was in for a treat!
If you like... Arranged relationships Fake flirting / courting Love triangle Forced Promixity Forbidden relationships Romantic suspense Swoonworthy kisses This is the book for you!
This has a bit of a snow white theme, even what feels like a Romeo Juliet theme I thought... you'll see why. But all in all, so much is packed into this story it didn't disappoint!
Margaretha is heading away from her family to work with the Queen in hopes of her setting her up with a potential husband. But before she goes, she needs hunting practice and flirting practice. And that was where Friedrich came in. He agrees to help her in exchange for French lessons so he can read a letter he's carried around, but could not read. Margaretha and Friedrich could never be ... and yet the more time they are together, the more drawn they are to each other. But Margaretha has a secret, and Friedrich's letter may be the one to expose that secret, truly making them never have a future. When his lessons with her are over... she will head to Brussels in search of a husband, and he will be separated from her, for good, so falling for her is not wise. And yet, Friedrich can't help himself.
But that is ONLY part one to their story.... part 2 will shock you with what all unfolds in Friedrich and Margareta's lives while they are together and apart.
You HAVE TO read this story. I honestly haven't read ANYTHING quite like it! I didn't expect everything to unfold how it did, but wow! I can not wait to see what's next for Rachel!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. The review is all my own opinion.
"You're worth more than this, Margaretha." His eyes held mine. "Your soul is valuable, and you have a right to live according to your conscience."
Heart of Snow by Rachel Grow Law
Update to include Audio review: The audio is fantastic! Noah Wall does a stunning performance, including German pronunciations!
You know those stories that just sit or live in your mind and you can't quite convey adequately how the book made you feel or just how much you loved it? That's this one for me. I really loved it so much! This book had so many unexpected parts in it for me. I knew going into it that it was historical romance with gothic snow white retelling vibes. What I didn't expect was the beautiful messages, the swoon, the fun delightful scenes, and plot twists! And oh, there were quite a few unexpected plot twists, that's for sure. I loved it all! Margaretha, haunted by something in her past, is healing from both physical and emotional scars. Enter Friedrich, soldier, servant, and protector. Can these two learn to overcome the past and let scars become beautiful? Oh Friedrich! He is protective, and so tender and soft toward Margaretha. Their romance is a forbidden love, due to social barriers. But it's so sweet.
I seriously cannot believe this one is a debut novel. It is rich in beauty, descriptions (without going over the top), history, and romance that will have you melting into a puddle of goo. I already have plans to listen to the audio once it becomes available.
I Loved: Healer/Soldier Archery/hunting lessons Gathering herbs French lessons One horse Forbidden love Redemption and Forgiveness Swoon! And so much more!
I really hope you pick this one up when it releases on January 14!
Thank you to the Author and publisher for the ebook review copy. All thoughts are my own. I ended up purchasing an early copy of the paperback and I am so thrilled I did, so that I could have a book trophy on my shelf of this one.

What an amazing debut novel! I loved this gothic Snow White retelling! The main characters were wonderful. I loved Friedrich. He is just a great hero. I also liked Margaretha, her character is very complex and I found myself yelling “don’t be stupid” at her a few times. Haha. But most times you feel so bad for her and are cheering her on. I loved the little nods to Snow White, I wish there would have been a little more of them. I did figure out who the villain was pretty quick but I was so interested to see how it would play out. And it was very well done! That ending was so good! This story had a great gothic atmosphere. I also loved reading the authors notes and finding about about who the characters are based on. So cool! Overall a great story! I recommend to gothic romance lovers!
Content: kisses, neck kisses, talk of becoming mistress to the Prince, poison, talk of witches, other gothic type themes
“Heart of Snow" by Rachel Grow Law is a fresh, Gothic Snow White retelling! Rachel Grow Law may be a debut author, but you would never know it from reading her amazing story. I will tell you right now that this is one of my top reads of the year! It was everything I wanted in a retelling and the romance was perfection. Ms. Grow Law managed to make several nods to the original fairy tale while making this book uniquely her own. I love this time period of 1500s Germany during the Reformation and appreciate that the author wove so much history into the story. I learned so many new things while reading this story. Ms. Grow Law gives great attention to historical details and the book was well researched. This is great for fans of retellings and romance with Gothic undertones. Margaretha and Friedrich are such great characters. Theirs is an enemies-to-lovers romance. There are lessons on flirting, love, archery, and French between the two. Will these enemies catch real feelings along the way? Margaretha is kind and willing to do whatever it takes to help her brother, even to her own detriment. Will she make the right choices when lives are at stake?
This book is so romantic, there is amazing chemistry and banter, and the first kiss was perfection. Ms. Grow Law made my jaw drop during a certain part, which I totally did not see coming! There is a scene in the rain and a letter that gave me “Pride and Prejudice” vibes. I love the themes on forgiveness throughout the story. I cannot say enough good things about “Heart of Snow.” Ms. Grow Law does not shy away from some harder topics, so be sure to read the content and trigger warnings (she manages them so well and they never felt too much to me). I am a huge fan and cannot wait for her next book! I want to read everything she writes. This is perfect for fans of swoony historical romances, retellings with Gothic undertones and those who want that happy sigh when they finish the last page!
Content: I give this a PG-13 rating, due to certain themes. Some examples of the content: mention of alcohol; a character watched a woman be burned to death in the past; someone curses, but the words aren’t actually written; there’s a festival during the time the veil thins between the living and dead and the devil’s followers (witches) are in full power, so they make a bonfire to speed their journey to hell; mention of physical abuse in someone’s past; a legend of an evil spirit is told and there’s mention of witches; mention of someone not wanting to live and of scars from cutting her wrists; there’s a flashback scene where a woman who is accused of witchcraft is burned at the stake; someone tells a story about a mother and child drowning in a river; someone pretends to do a palm reading and fortune telling; a brief section of animals not being treated the best and being forced to perform; someone is accused of being a harlot; someone assumes someone else has a mistress; someone debates whether they should sleep with someone out of wedlock; someone is a bastard son; possible hallucinations. TW: past physical abuse; mention of past su*cidal ideation and cutting; possible hallucinations.
Trigger Warnings (supplied by the author): folklore involving deaths of characters prior to the book's beginning (drowning of a mother and child, a child miner being buried alive), attempted seduction, heated kisses, a witch burning, character trapped in a claustrophobic situation.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
“He chuckled, his breath warm on my neck as he cut a twig from my shoulder. “True. But with you gone, where will I find your equal for such charming blunders.”
Wow, I am so amazed that this is Rachel’s debut novel. It is beautifully written, it is intriguing, addicting and it kept me guessing what would happen next.
This is a gothic Snow White retelling but it’s also inspired by Margaretha von Waldreck whose real life story may have influenced the classic Snow White fairytale.
I have never read a story quite like this. It is so unique. It has a darker gothic style, and is set in the 1500’s during the Reformation. The setting in Germany, even the style of clothing, and the time period were quite fascinating.
I loved the themes of mercy and forgiveness. I also absolutely loved Friedrich! The forbidden romance was touching, and I loved the pull I could feel between Friedrich and Margaretha from the start!
Read for: 🍎Friedrich 🍎archery lessons 🍎the kisses 🍎the forced proximity 🍎forgiveness and healing 🍎unique and vibrant settings 🍎memorable scenes 🍎the holly thicket 🍎shocking twists and turns
I really had no idea how the author would resolve the conflicts in this story. Everything tied up perfectly and the happy ending was wonderful. What a unique and intriguing story. . . . Content: seduction, becoming a mistress mentioned, death, death by burning, darker themes and moments
Thank you to the author and publisher for the arc copy. All opinions are my own.
I’m not a say-less fairy tale re-telling reader. But if you tell me it’s a class difference Reformation-era historical romance with a heroine on a mission to save her brother and a former soldier gruff hero tale with slight nods to Snow White, then I’ll say “say less.”
This was so confidently and fluidly written-and I won’t add “for a debut.” I enjoyed the vivid, descriptive language that placed one right in the middle of that square and that pyre. The looming energy of such perilous times was very effective. I didn’t expect this story be plenty of court intrigue than anything, but not complaining. So happy with all the historical elements, and we love a good geek-out in those author notes.
I did miss some of the great forced proximity we started with in the second part, and my patience was tested by both meddling maids and monarchs, but that climax/resolution had me glued to my kindle. Loved the theme of forgiving, including ourselves. Margaretha might’ve lost her way following misguided self-sacrifice, but solidly swoony Friedrich was there to see beyond the countess to the yearning girl and give her a solidly swoony shoulder to lean on.
If you love fairytale retellings and/or wholesome historical romance, ye simply must read. Oh, and an HEA for charming Count Samuel, please and thank you.
Thank you to the always-lovely author for an ARC!
Content notes: Kissing only, parent-loss grief, mention of past sexual trauma for secondary character, mention of affairs and mistresses.
I received an advance copy of this book for review.
A very impressive debut!
Set in 1500s Germany this is a historically based retelling of Snow White inspired by an actual person. I loved how grounded this approach to a retelling was. It is not a whimsical or fantasy based fairytale (which definitely have a place as well—I’m not looking down on those!) and gave me a similar feeling of the movie Ever After with a bit more grit added in. The little nods to Snow White were very fun to spot and to anticipate, but the story also stood on its own really well and didn't use the fairytale as a crutch.
The romance is made up of so many small moments and I loved the way the the tension simmered and built. It was an emotionally agonizing journey with a satisfying conclusion. The main character goes through some significant developments to reach important realizations and it was satisfying to see it play out.
Trigger/content warnings: "witch" burning, . Steam level is kissing and light implied innuendo.
This is a Gothic-style retelling of Snow White with so much more. What I adored about this novel: The captivating period, rich history, themes of the reformation, engaging romance, and strong values of loyalty and honor. The author is exceedingly talented. Thank you, Covenant Communications, for the opportunity to read and review. My review is freely given.
What a unique Snow White retelling set in 1500's Germany. I fell in love with the setting! This story gave me all the feels including frustration. You know the meme with Sheldon reading and saying "Why?... Why?... Why?!... Oh, that's why." That was me. 🙈 I was immersed and totally invested in this world and intrigued to learn that a lot of the characters were based off of real people. There were several jaw dropping moments and I wished for more Friedrich. Well done on this debut novel!
This book. It’s just breathtaking. I still can’t fathom how this is just a debut novel. The writing was so rich and engaging. I was captivated from start to finish with this beautiful, powerful and awe-inspiring snow-white retelling.
Friedrich…oh, sweet Friedrich! He’s so swoony. Protective, loving, tender and boy, can he flirt! He’s a soldier with a hurtful past that’s left him untrusting of nobility. But he sees something different in Margaretha. She’s a puzzle to him. One he tries so hard to figure out.
Countess Margaretha was such a loving soul. She was so selfless and taking care of others was a gift of hers. But she has a secret that haunts her and has left her with scars. Can these two find a way to redemption and forgiveness and heal the scars that threaten to keep them apart?
I didn’t know what all to expect with this story, but boy was I in for a treat! There was so much compacted into this little gem, but weaved together so perfectly. The gothic vibe was fantastic and gave so much intrigue to the story. The swoon, the romance, the characters and the plot twists…it was all just so good. And those plot twists…they will leave your jaw dropping!
There were times I didn’t know how Rachel would tie it all together so that Friedrich and Margaretha would find their happily ever after. But have no fear, the ending is every romance lovers dream!! I’ve reread the ending scenes over and over and every time I still blush!
I loved the little hints of the cartoon Snow White that were sprinkled throughout, but this truly is a story all its own, and not like the classic fairy tale, which I loved. It’s so unique and gripping.
What you’ll love: 🍎The scar 🏹Bow lessons 🍎Gothic vibes 🏹One horse 🍎The holly thicket 🏹Shooting gloves 🍎The apple 🏹French lessons 🍎Swoony kisses 🏹Flirting lessons 🍎Achingly tender romance 🏹Sweet Vesalius 🍎Twists and turns 🏹Chicken feathers 🍎Forbidden love

Title: Heart of Snow Author: Rachel Grow Law 📚 Oh my goodness! How on earth is this Rachel’s debut? It is captivating from the very first sentence. Rachel’s beautiful prose and attention to detail shine throughout this entire novel and it is truly stunning. The number of characters that are based on historical figures is mind boggling. And did you know the traditional story of Snow White was based on a potentially true tale? You learn something new every day. If you are one who typically skips authors' notes, I’d encourage you not to do so with this one. My heart aches for Margaretha and everything she went through, the burden she carried her whole life. And just when you think you know everything, BAM! Rachel throws you a curve ball you didn’t see coming and that wrenches your heart right out. But I was cheering for her and hoping to see her growth that would allow her to drop her burden, and Rachel delivered. Which reminds me, I really love the themes of forgiveness and kindness and redemption woven throughout. Chefs kiss good! Speaking of chefs kiss fabulous: Friedrich. Oh my holy bananas, that man! You’ll think you like him, then you won’t be so sure, then you’ll warm up some more, then you’ll be full on board, then he’ll shock you and you’ll want to slap him. But then. THEN! He will turn corners you almost couldn’t have believed possible and he will become the ultimate book hero. Just trust me on this one. And don’t skip that author’s note. ;) Also, you will love to loathe the villain. I’m not saying who it is. No spoilers! I was truly blown away by Rachel’s work on this one. The characters are deep and complicated, the situation is not fluffy and easy. She tackled some challenging things with this debut, and she did it with poise and class. If you are in the mood for a Gothic-vibe (don’t let the light cover fool you; it definitely has a more moody feel) medieval romance with heavy themes of redemption and forgiveness, please pick up this book. 📚 CW/TW: some medieval superstitions, especially involving witchcraft; burning and fires; deep guilt and manipulation; absent father; mother passed on (previous to book) Rating: 4.5 stars
This story is so much more than a Snow White retelling! It pays homage to the fairy tale but is truly a story of its own. The fact that there is no magical element makes it even better!
With characters that inspire hate and those that engender love, it is a story full of depth, redemption, and love.
Gah! It is so hard to put my thoughts and feelings into words. Go in expecting an amazing story and you will not be disappointed!
Read this book if you like: 🍎 Learning Archery 🍎 The Art of Flirting 🍎 Family First 🍎 Being Prepared 🍎 Honesty 🍎 Skilled Healers 🍎 Sacrifice 🍎 Spanish Princes 🍎 Medicinal Experiments 🍎 Crypts 🍎 Dual POV
This is a debut, but doesn’t read like one. Rachel has become an auto-read author for me!
Contents: Mentions of a mistress, betrayal, court plots, terminally ill loved one, romance- kisses only.
I received a complimentary copy; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Content to be aware of: mild language? (As in, hell as a place), kissing only (descriptive), talk of war/aftermath/prisoners poorly treated, plague/sickness, past self harm (briefly mentioned, not descriptive), references to Catholicism and Protestantism (set during the Reformation, some talk of praying, sin/guilt) **I would recommend this one for teens and up. My daughters, aged 10 and 8, were asking if they could read this one but I told them to wait. Some of the “bad guy” characters are a little icky (but again, nothing explicit), and I just wanted them to be a little bit older first.
Genre and Tropes: historical romance, fairytale retelling, forbidden love/class difference
Synopsis: Set in the mid-1500s in Germany amidst the Reformation Wars, Margaretha is the daughter of a German Count who has just lost a major battle, his own son Samuel captured in the process. Forced to now play nice with the Catholic Spanish forces that come into town, Margaretha decides to finally accept the invitation of the Queen Regent to be a part of her court as a lady-in-waiting. Guided by her long time friend and lady-in-waiting, Belinda, Margaretha will seek to garner the attention (and marriage) of a Lord at court in order to secure her brother’s freedom. Before going to Brussels, Belinda convinces Margaretha to practice getting a man to fall for her, with someone of no consequence. Enter Friedrich, the (handsome) soldier who escaped the aftermath of the battle in order to bear the news of her brother’s capture. Secrets and guilt from her past cloud her decisions at every turn. When the Prince visits court and turns his attention to Margaretha, can she keep her resolve to do anything in order to save her brother?
My thoughts/review: I loved this book from start to finish. 🥰 I love that this Snow White retelling is set in a historical time and place, with some real people from history as well (though obviously fictional liberties were taken for the sake of the story). The story stands on its own, and you don’t need to be familiar with the Grimms’ tale in order to appreciate it. Though, if you know the Grimms’ version (and not just the Disney) there will be a couple extra things you might spot. 🤗 As far as the romance goes, it gets all the heart-eyes. 😍😍😍 There are so many swoony moments and the tension is perfect. And the kissing is 😍🫠🫰🏼I also really appreciated that none of the “drama” between the characters is drawn out just for the sake of having an obstacle to overcome. The stakes are high enough without adding anything unnecessary on that front. Can’t wait for what Rachel Grow Law has coming next. I, for one, will definitely be reading it.
This fairytale retelling is no fairytale! It’s a journey, a history lesson, a game of court politics and maneuvering, a slow burn forbidden romance doomed by secrets. There is friendship, deception, selflessness and sacrificial love. Add in some mystery and suspense for good measure, and you have this fantastic debut from Rachel Grow Law!
I have been looking forward to this story for what seems like forever. And let me tell you good things come to those who wait. I went into this without reading blurbs or other advanced reviews; I wanted my first impressions to be authentic. It paid off. This was an excellent debut, and the amount of research and attention to detail was outstanding.
I loved all the nods to the Snow White fairytale. She effortlessly and believably worked in so many little moments to summon the reader’s nostalgia from our childhood stories. She also enhanced the experience by giving us such wonderfully researched aspects of history. I love when a book, not only teaches me something, but it makes it captivating as well.
She gave us an underdog, lovable MMC, who we all were routing for. And a doggedly-determined FMC who would stop at nothing to save those she loved. Their complicated and tension filled relationship was a roller coaster of highs and lows, swoons and shocks.
Needless to say, I enjoyed this one immensely. Especially the gothic vibes the story gave closer to the end. The added suspense and twists were the cherry on top.
Thank you @rachelgrowlaw_author for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own. This book is now available!
It took a bit of time for the Snow White aspect to show up, but it was worth the wait.
This is a lovely historical fiction, based on real events from 1500s Germany. I loved learning a bit more from the author's notes at the end.
Read for: ✔️fairytale retelling without magic ✔️the slowest of slow burn romanced ✔️a genuine motive from the villain ✔️a history lesson about the Reformation ✔️lessons about forgiving yourself
"Some men are born noble. Others must create nobility in themselves. Never does a man exhibit truer nobility than when he forgives the undeserving."
First book of the year, and one of my top five favorite books of all time. I had the privilege of reading this book through many stages of development, and I love it as if it were one of my own, mostly because I know how much struggle and sacrifice went into this story's creation.
The historical setting is fascinating with its political, religious, and royal court intrigue. The plot is interesting, the characters are flawed but still inviting, and the romance is top tier. Such a gradual change of hearts, with the tension and longing perfectly portrayed, and the plot twists expertly done. And the messages of grace and forgiveness and love are just a masterclass. I love everything about this book and will recommend it to everyone.
If you like non-magic fairy tale retellings and a historical presentation of Snow White, you won't want to miss this one.
❤️❄️ Oh, bookish friends—𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙣𝙤𝙬 by Rachel Grow Law hit like an arrow to the heart… but not with a poisoned apple. No, this one comes for your feels with aching slow-burn tension, forbidden flirtation, gothic grit, & one huntsman’s page you’ll fall for even faster than Margaretha does (and she tried to keep it platonic, bless her heart). 📚
🍎 This isn’t your sparkly fairytale. It’s Ever After meets Grimm brothers in a storm, where secrets smolder, stakes rise, & flirtation lessons are decidedly not safe for hearts.
🍎 Set in 1500s Germany & stitched with emotional depth, historical richness, & just enough danger to keep you clutching the book—this debut delivers.
🍎 Margaretha is shy, wounded, & braver than anyone gives her credit for. She’ll do anything to save her brother… even fake flirt with a man she should definitely not be falling for.
🍎 And Friedrich? Noble-hating. Bow-wielding. Letter-carrying. Emotionally damaged & swoony in every possible way. Basically, a cinnamon roll wrapped in chainmail and trust issues.
WHAT TO LOVE 🍎 Snow White, but make it gothic 🏹 Archery, hunting, & one horse (yes, they share it) 🔥 Flirtation practice that gets way too real 💌 A letter that breaks you 💋 First kiss = bookish CPR required 🎭 Secrets, twists, & the slowest burn ✨ Redemption, forgiveness, & the kind of ending you feel
TOP MOMENTS TO WATCH FOR: • The “just pretend” flirting (you’ll melt) • The rain scene + letter = straight-up Pride & Prejudice vibes • A cave, feathers, & tension you can taste • The moment you realize the villain is worse than you thought • When everything you thought you knew turns upside down
🍎 It’s dark, it’s swoony, and it’s emotionally layered. That this is Rachel Grow Law’s debut is frankly rude, because now I need every book she ever writes .
It's so hard to know where to begin with this book, it was just incredible! It was a little bit of a slow start for me, just to see where the story was going, and get to know the characters, but it didn't take long for it to be impossible to put it down!
It's so hard to believe that in a book less than 300 pages, it was packed with SO much, and not a bit of it felt rushed. The romance was a sweet slow burn, with so many twists and turns, so many moments I was worried who Margaretha would end up with!
Friedrick was the kind of guy that every girl would want. 🩷 He never gave up on Margaretha, even when he was hurt. He always showed up for her at just the right moment to save her, always loving her. And didn't just love her for her beauty, but loved and encouraged her for who she was inside and out, and that's what I always look for in a book. 🩷
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there were a couple moments with the romance that, in my personal opinion, went just a little bit far, but I'd still say it was very clean. It was still obviously written very carefully. It's so hard to believe that this is @rachel debut novel, the story is just captivating and so much talent!! 🩷
If you like snow white fairytale retelling, clean medieval books, then I highly recommend this one!! 🩷
*I received an e-ARC for review, all opinions are my own
i’ve had my eye on this debut and it did not disappoint. rachel has a beautiful gift for storytelling and i love the way she subtly brought out Snow White in Heart of Snow. this story expertly stands on its own and isn’t just a rewrite which i really appreciate. the historical setting was fresh and a nice change of pace from the usual regency era.
margaretha and friedrich’s romance was so subtle and the sweetest slow burn. it really snuck up on me. i loved margaretha’s innocence even though it was also her downfall. her determination to do anything to save her brother, even at the sacrifice of herself, really endeared me to her. i love that friedrich was able to see through to margaretha’s heart and truly understand her. he was the sweetest hero and my heart really broke for him at times considering the things he had to see and bear.
i loved learning about the “dwarfs” in the mines and the truth behind that. i enjoyed queen mary’s court and the intrigue. there were some interesting characters along the way, especially belinda. i really liked how medicine at that time played into the ending and how everyone got what they deserved. definitely don’t sleep on this fresh debut from, rachel grow law.

thank you to covenant and the author for a gifted copy. my thoughts are my own.
I’ve had the privilege of meeting Rachel Grow Law a couple times, and she is just the sweetest! So I was super excited to read her debut novel, and I just have to say, she absolutely killed it! This is a book that delivers on adventure, intrigue, and a romance so full of tension it practically comes to life! This version of Snow White might not be the typical fairy tale retelling, but I loved the twist to the Snow White story! Margaretha and Friedrich's story is rich with gothic mystery, forbidden love, and a plot twist that took me completely by surprise! Their chemistry was unique and special in its own kind of way, and their individual journeys of self discovery were filled with heartbreak, redemption, and forgiveness. And that ending?!? Holy crap! Personally I’m not the biggest fan of historical fiction, (don’t hate me 😬…) but I was captivated by this book! I so appreciated the explanation of actual historical events at the end of the book, and seeing the transition from fact to fiction was incredible! This is one unique read, and something I absolutely didn't expect, especially from a debut novel!
Oh, my, heck! Rachel freaking Grow Law, you completely outdid yourself. This book was so hard to put down, but I also wanted to savor every word. The romance, the suspense, the deceit, the love… I just can’t even! It was SO stinking good. I absolutely loved this story, with its gothic twist on Snow White. There was so many layers, and each peel brought a new twist, and a new level of “how the heck is this story going to work out?!” 😂 I’m obsessed. I cannot wait for more from this author, because she is already a new favorite.
Everyone! Do yourself a favor and snag this book. And clear your evening because you won’t want to put it down.
Thank you to the author and publisher for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
“Your beauty is in the goodness of your soul. In who you are. It’s you who’s beautiful. It’s you I love.”
DNF at 50%. I may pick this back up and try again later, but this felt like such a slog. Some of my friends really enjoyed this book, but I just could not get into the story or feel invested in the characters (especially the main character who seemed incredibly insipid and unintelligent to me). 🤷🏻♀️
Beautifully written. Wonderful twists and turns and ended just lovely. I think what I loved most was the messages of forgiveness and beauty of a person’s soul. It has ALL the Ever After vibes that makes me melt! I loved the historical elements—this author did so much research!! Can’t wait to read more of her novels.
I love a good fairy tale retelling and I really enjoyed this one! I don’t think I’ve read a Snow White retelling so this was fun for me. I loved the history woven through as well. I enjoyed the writing style and pacing. Overall, I thought this was a really good book!
I absolutely loved this Snow White retelling. The historical setting was engaging and I loved the details. It felt well researched. Everafter is one of my favorite films, and this novel had the same beautiful vibe.
Heart of Snow was a hard book for me. I had to take some time to really think about the story before writing a review.
Going in to this novel I had my mind and heart set on a Snow White retelling. I absolutely love fairy tale retellings and was so excited to see what Rachel Grow Law was going to do with Snow White’s story.
When the connections between Heart of Snow and Snow White weren’t quick in appearance I was a little disappointed. I sought those connections throughout the novel and while there are a few connections there, they aren’t always obvious.
After finishing the book I took a few days to really think through the story. What I liked. What I didn’t like. I forced myself to let go of the Snow White expectations and just look at the story on its own.
I’ve decided I need to give Heart of Snow another chance. I need to read it without the fairy tale expectations because it is a good story. I think I was just so focused on finding the fairy tale that I missed a lot of other things.
Here are a few things I loved.
Heart of Snow is inspired by historical events and figures, specifically Margaretha von Waldeck. I loved that Rachel Grow Law took the time to mention her in the author’s note. I am very intrigued by Margaretha and admit to doing to little more research on her.
Margaretha is a very interesting character. I was immediately intrigued by her and this giant mystery that surrounds her throughout the book. Even though we don’t know all the details for most of the book, we get to see how this past moment has shaped so much of her life and personality.
I also really loved the themes of sacrifice, redemption, and forgiveness throughout this novel. I can’t say much because of spoilers, but many of the characters deal with all three of these things. It’s intriguing to see how each character develops and handles the burdens that they have.
In all, I still have some mixed feelings. I’m going to give myself a little time and come back for this story. It’s an intriguing story and I need to dive back in with an open mind.
What a fantastic debut! I loved that there were elements of the Snow White tale woven into this historical romance set in 1500s Germany. It was such a unique story and I loved that it wasn’t a predictable retelling.
This was a forbidden romance with great banter. I loved both of the main characters and how everything comes together in the end. There were so many twists and turns that I did not see coming which made this such a fun book!

(Highly recommend reading the author’s note after you read this one because it turns out that many of these characters were inspired by actual historical figures!)
