I won't try to be constructive about the plot, characters, lore, and so on, because if a book has a forest, a swamp, mountains, and all the weird stuff that lives there, it's a surefire way to my heart, especially if the story also includes a grumpy old man or woman who knows a lot about these places and creatures.
Overall, I liked the book. But a lot of my interest was, of course, the swamp, so I might have missed some problems in the plot, characters, and so on. I had a huge fish or snake, and that was enough for me. Actually, that's still enough for me; it was interesting, the key word is "was," but more on that later.
Aside from all my admiration, I'd like to single out Marfa for special compliments. She was delightful for a while, but more on that later. Also, Seraphim and Stephania. I also liked the narrative style. In any case, the descriptions of the swamp and surrounding areas were quite captivating.
But all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately, it didn't end at the end of the story. In fact, first of all, I'd like to point out that the storyline with Steph and Ares was much, much more boring. I admit, I didn't particularly want to listen to it, but I still wanted to find out what happened to Marfa's house and the main character's family in the future, and I wasn't complaining.
So what turned me off reading it? First! Agrafena. Not her, but all those budding romantic feelings between her and Ares. My God, I came here to play with wolves, not to hear about tanned shoulders and torsos being stared at. Ugh! And I don't even care whether this storyline develops or not, or whether it takes up too much space, because things got worse from there.
And secondly, there's Marfa's past. Firstly, in my opinion, that damned swamp TV with flashbacks to someone's past is too much. But I could overlook that if the past weren't so boring. I understand, of course, that Marfa wasn't born a grumpy old woman, but oh my God, her aristocratic past just killed me. And besides, that romantic nonsense started there, which is even more terrifying to read, knowing it's our old, unkind Marfa.
You can throw slippers at me because I simply don't like romance. I like romance, just a certain kind. To the same or a different degree, just like many other people. We all seek a certain kind of romance for ourselves, and we can't stand any other kind. And, in my opinion, shoving romance into the plot out of nowhere isn't the best idea, because it's very easy to miss the point of readers' interests, and the story could easily have done without it, because if it could go more than half the book without any romance, it can continue to do so. Of course, it's not my place to tell authors what to write or not write in their books, and I'm only putting my emotions into this text. And my emotions, alas, tell me that I can't listen to this audiobook any longer, even though I genuinely found it very interesting, which makes me even more disappointed, so I simply can't give it a higher rating.
