Moon Shadows contains stories of recovery from childhood abuse, neglect, family violence and psychological trauma. Each contributor tells her story and writes about what they consider to be the most important keys to their recovery. Although some of the stories contain vivid descriptions of the physical and sexual abuse each author endured, they will inspire and motivate the reader and leave them with a sense of hope, that full recovery is possible.
Dr. Colin Ross is a respected and renowned psychiatrist in the field of psychological trauma. He put together this book as a way for adult survivors of extreme childhood abuse and trauma to share their tragic and courageous stories of trauma and recovery. Each chapter is written by a survivor in their own voice about their own experiences. All of these women have had full or partial forms of dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder) as a result of their abuse. The stories show the severe and lifelong effects of abuse as well as numerous ways the mental health system has failed those with DID over and over. Despite the life-shattering horrors shared, these survivors are still able to convey hope, which is incredibly powerful and inspiring for any person who is suffering. The survivors also show immense strength and bravery to be able to share their personal stories and to go through the rigorous and painful treatment to get the help they need and deserve. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in trauma and/or dissociative disorders.
