Black Bones Jones by James Moorer reads like Django and The Witcher tossed into a John Carpenter siege-film blender — in the best possible way. Jones fights evil, both supernateral and very human, with a perfect mix of raw ancestral magic and straight-up fists. It actually reminded me a bit of Sinners, (a wonderful film that released eariler this year) which is fantastic. The interpersonal dynamics, really hooked me. The push-pull tension between characters — especially across racial lines in the Reconstruction era — makes you feel like anyone could turn on Jones at any moment. It gives the story an extra layer of tension that just works.

I also really appreciate that Moorer chose to set his story in a part of history most people barely talk, or even know about. That strange in-between space after the American Civil War where slavery was 'illegal,' but somehow still happening in everything but name. Sharecropping, labor traps, and the endless ways the system reinvents itself to keep people in chains — the book doesn’t shy away from any of that. And using supernatural horror and action to explore those real-world horrors gives the story this weight and resonance beneath all the badassery.

The whole book reads like a movie playing out in your head: It’s bold, smart, and just a blast to read.

highly entertaining and made me think

It isn’t often I find a fiction book that makes me challenge myself, my preconceived notions, and what I thought I knew from previous reads. This is that book.
From the beginning I knew I would have to read this one in sections. I needed to sit with the disrespect the MC is shown and realize that maybe the world hasn’t changed as much as it should. I didn’t want to gloss over that part of the story, as I may have done when I was younger.
The challenges Jacob Jones faces on both a personal and “eternal war” level are ones I will never know. Yet James Moorer absolutely conveyed the emotional impact so that anyone with a heart could empathize.

What would you do if you dedicated your life to fighting evil, especially the supernatural kind, yet were chased, accused, repeatedly beaten and almost sold into slavery or given death? Would you still fight evil for those who would turn against you? Or wind you turn your back? Jacob Jones must face this decision, and his answer will leave the world indelibly marked.
