Calamity City Mafia #1

Gambler's Conceit

Rate this book
I've been on the run for months. No destination in mind, I just have to keep moving. I can't let them find me.

Then I make a mistake. I get into a car with Caleb Spade, owner of one of Calamity City's biggest casinos, and part of the Spade Mob Family. He's got no intention of letting me leave. Well, I'm not going to be a meek little toy for him. Anybody I can seduce is fair game.

Vortex, a mob enforcer who can't keep his eyes--or hands--off me.

Havoc, the army vet with a chip on his shoulder and an anger management problem and a craving for my pain.

And Caleb Spade himself, a man with control issues a mile wide who wants me on my knees and obedient.

I'm gambling with my body, but I know I can pull it off. I have to. If I fail, I'll have three dark, violent men demanding payment in blood... or worse.

At least it's just my body, and not my heart. I can't ever let anyone have that.

I love stories coming from these authors minds. The circumstances are dark, the plot is dark and vicious, did I say dark? Yes, yes I did and I love it!!

Seven is disappointed in himself. After escaping his captors, he has already fallen into someone else's clutches.

Caleb picked Seven up from the side of a boiling hot endless road where Seven would have died from dehydration if it wasn’t for Caleb.

Caleb is the owner of a big casino in Calamity City, and part of a mafia family. He wants to keep Seven, he loves his tears and wants to be the reason for them.

He shares him with Vortex and Havoc. You’ll meet them while reading! The three of them are possessive and determined to keep Seven. If only he’d cooperated and believed them, that would have helped. But Seven will never feel safe and has a self-destructed sense.

Seven lies through his teeth when they ask him anything. Yeah, he had fun… not! Yes, he enjoyed… not! Yes, he wants to get fvcked by three… please no! He just keeps smiles, playing the bratty boy. Seven doesn’t like not knowing what they expect from him.

The more we (and the guys) get to know Seven, the more we understand he has a hurtful background, he’s complicated, anxious, distraught, and questioning his own life's worth.

Oh boy, it’s quite hard to see Seven struggle. The story is complicated, harsh, eventful, super hot 🥵, and full of hurt/comfort. Not everything is revealed and clear, but that’s because the journey isn’t done yet!

We do get to know some specific characteristics of the three tops!! 😈

There’s an HFN, Seven’s story will continue. I can’t wait for what the next installment will bring! Overall, it was a solid read, the story is strongly and consistently written, and super attractive!

Highly recommended for the ones who can handle dark, vicious reads with a list of trigger warnings!

A Dark MMM/M Romance Trilogy that had me in a chokehold!

Seven is on the run, but he should take better care with whom he tries to gamble...
But I don't blame him, I couldn't choose between Caleb, Vortex and Havoc ❤️

“Maybe your name is indeed apt,” Caleb says. “I feel quite lucky to have stumbled across you in the desert.”

Dark mafia m/m why choose. I mostly liked this, and everything I didn't like about it is pretty subjective. Seven, the main character, is on the run from a horrible situation, and ends up mistakenly fleeing into the arms of men who might be just as bad, or his saviours, or both. Caleb is a mafia man and a casino owner, Vortex is his right hand man/enforcer, and Havoc is a hot-headed, ex-military new hire. This first book in the series is about them all falling for Seven, and vice versa, but there's just a little issue of kidnapping and imprisonment between them.

The main theme of the book, and the series I expect, is unpacking trauma. We don't yet know the full extent of what Seven has been through, but it's a lot. And it's honestly heart-breaking, watching Caleb snatch his autonomy away from him time and time again, and seeing the ways Seven acts out when he's in pain. And I hated the ways Caleb exerted control. I didn't expect him to be NICE, but I didn't particularly like him. Even though it eventually becomes what Seven needs, even though Seven LIKES everything about what they do... it just wasn't really my cup of tea. I always joke that in a why choose there's almost one of them who hates the main character's guts, and that didn't quite apply here. But EYE hated Caleb, lol. Havoc, I liked a bit better, but not much. His kink stuff was too extreme for me. I did like Vortex, predictably, since he's the softest and nicest. But even he has some growing to do. And Seven was my favourite, of course.

IDK how I feel about his backstory yet; I feel like it might be going in a direction that might make me roll my eyes. I really want to see Seven spread his wings a bit more, get a bit more freedom, push back against Caleb's control. And I do want to pick up the plot threads with Havoc's mother and Vortex's sister. I'm really dissatisfied with where we left the former. And there's obviously a lot of mafia shenanigans to come. In general, the writing was fine; nothing to write home about, but not terrible either. Not my favourite handling of heavy themes like this, but I've read worse.

So I guess I'll eventually continue the series? Like I said, the love interests have a lot of growing on me to do. I don't mind dark and amoral characters, but I need to like them enough to want to root for the relationship. And so far I can only kinda say that about Vortex. But I love Seven, so that's reason enough to continue. And the cats! Lots of cute cat content in here, which was precious and needed.

This one was a hit! Can’t wait to read the next book. Seven is such a sweetheart, who gives bits and pieces of who he is and what his past was throughout the book. I thought he was such a strong person at the start of the book but he really is just coping and trying to escape from a horrible past that you get glimmers of but never really get the full scope. All I’ve got to say is, this boy truly deserves something to hold onto and the 3 men who claim him are exactly what he needs and deserves. And his cat, Nacho! Freaking loved Nacho and Miss K. Caleb was so cold and off putting at first, that I didn’t care for him, until I realized he has a huge soft spot for Seven and he’ll do anything for him. Havoc is very down on his luck and happens to hit it off with Seven, who definitely brings the kink out in him. Then there’s big daddy Vortex, who I liked from the very beginning. Vortex is a bruiser like Havoc but so sweet to Seven, I loved when he brought Seven to see the drag queens and saw how much Seven lit up. The four of these guys have a great dynamic and it works for them all to just be with Seven, in and out of the bedroom. I’d love to see Seven reveal his past to the guys and for them to grow as a foursome and all open up to each other so they can have a good future together. I want to see Seven truly happy and not just faking it till he makes it.

First I read the mafia doms series, now Gambler's conceit. I declare myself unconditional fan of both authors. The way of writing, of building up characters that are broken but stronger because of that. Simply perfection.
Now focusing on the book itself, I love Seven. I need to know more about his situation and can't wait for book 2 to learn about it. Caleb I thought at the beginning that he would be more plain but was I wrong. He is complex, fierce protecting what's his, not caring what is the cost of it. Havoc is also someone who wouldn't care to go to hell and back to protect Seven and Vortex I hope we can get more of him because I'm really loving how he is portrait here.
Overall 5/5 and absolutely recommended read!

I'm only going to write one review for this trilogy. I can't even figure out why I kept reading past the 25% mark of book 1 other than I want to know how they were going to save Seven for good.
Caleb, Havoc and Vortex are all likeable characters but none of them have any character development.
Havoc has a mother who won't leave her abusive husband (Havoc's step-father) and that is all his story is...just going there over and over to try to convince her to leave.
Vortex has a sister who is always asking for money and is always involved in a new pyramid scheme and gets mad at him for wanting better for her. Lots of gaslighting and bratty behavior.
Caleb just runs the casino and has short, meaningless interactions with other heads of other mafias in town.
Everything centers around Seven and he is one of the worst characters I've ever read. Granted this kid has gone through A LOT in his short life and no one would come out of that acting even close to normal BUT this is fiction..... I wanted him to improve noticeably so that I wasn't constantly feeling icky about the whole thing. This kid was SA his entire life by hundreds of people and is now immediately in a relationship with 3 men who don't know how to help him in a healthy way and it's just a lot of sex for the wrong reasons and just very uncomfortable. I don't say this to yuck any yums. This would have been ok at the beginning and then there should have been some improvement on mindsets all around and I just didn't get that. Three books and it felt icky for most of it.
The first sexual interaction that didn't give me the ick was at 65% of BOOK THREE. I kept waiting for things to seem romantic but every interaction was just Seven looking to get punished, to feel pain. I don't even know how to describe it here.
Being in Seven's POV is hard to follow, uncomfortable and SO REPETATIVE. He doesn't grow much and he needs help that isn't three men f#cking him every time he starts to panic. And what was with the gambling addiction? What purpose did that have other than to annoy the reader???
In book 3, I had a glimmer of hope that something actually interesting would happen when Havoc and Vortex were toying with the idea of "interacting" (wink wink) with each other but then that was quickly dismissed and I was so disappointed. WHY EVEN PUT THAT IN THERE IF THE AUTHORS WEREN'T GOING TO FOLLOW THROUGH. Heaven forbid the fixed algorithm of this trilogy get a little exciting switch up. Ugh.

Like I said....I only read all 3 because I wanted to know what was going to happen in the end and kept hoping things would get interesting. I should have just skipped to the end of book 3. I wouldn't have missed anything.
Do not recommend. Only didn't give it 1 star because the writing was good (aside from a surprising uptick in mistakes in book 3)

I loved this!

So I haven’t read a lot of dark romance lately — horror, yes, but there’s a difference. Anyway, it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to dig into one and thoroughly enjoy it. Gambler’s Conceit is a great first of the year read!

We have polyamory, platonic connections between Caleb, Havoc, and Vortex along with Seven getting all the protectors he could handle.

Phoenix and Wolf are adept at making it so we are able to tell who’s POV it is, being unique from each other despite the fact they are men who share some similar traits (a desire for Seven and generally strong and domineering). If I had to pick a favorite, I am a sucker for Havoc — he is like a guard dog for Seven. Very cute (dont tell him I said that!)

Vortex the Daddy has the most “soft” energy, and then Caleb is the head of this group with his domineering sadism, sharp wit and most of all wanting everyone to get their enjoyment. While it’s still building up slowly in this book, I can easily see how all four of these men slot together even if they’re not all equally romantically in love with one another. Seven is the hinge that connect their lives.

The last 30% had a lot of tension but it came out okay — I was almost sure it’d be a cliffhanger lol. It is a HFN with the story going to continue soon, and I’m excited to see how it goes with the problems this group will be facing!

Also, yeah, the sex scenes are pretty hot.

ARC REVIEW

Before you start this make sure you’re well acquainted with the triggers and do avoid it if it’s not for you because this might be triggering for a lot of people, but this is my kinda thing so I enjoyed this.

I think this might be my first MMM/m romance read. I usually avoid anything that exceeds MMM mostly because you ever rarely see an MMM romance done well where one of the characters isn’t left behind but this was very well rounded. None of the characters became background characters and we got the POVs from each character which made the story a lot more enjoyable and also easier to connect with the characters.

I enjoyed this a lot, there were instances where Seven was really getting on my nerves but I also understood why he was the way he is. He is a boy who is broken beyond measure, he’s running away from the people who has trafficked him almost all his life and this boy doesn’t know what if feels like to be cared for or loved. He doesn’t know the pleasure outside what’s forced on him or taken from him by force.

He meets Caleb and to be honest Caleb is a massive asshole. He is not a good person and his first encounter with Seven was really annoying, but there was a significant character development with him and despite my annoyance at him, I knew the reason he forced Seven to stay.

Havoc and Vortex were a wonderful addition to these couples because Caleb didn’t really have what it takes to give Seven the kind of affectionate care and attention that Seven has been denied all his life. Caleb was a good Master but Seven needed more than just a master. He needed some extra softness and Havoc and Vortex filled that void.

I love how each men has a role to play as Seven’s partner and it was honestly what was best for Seven. They make a perfect dynamic.

My main hang up with this book was how we never really got told the full backstory of what happened to Seven. All we got were glimpses here and there but nothing really substantial aside from the conclusions Caleb and Vortex made.

Overall, as a dark romance lover. This was a nice real. Loved it.

Oh my heart! It hurts so good and so bad for Seven. This young man has had a hard and cruel life. He’s on the run, escaping someone, when he finds himself hitchhiking in the desert, finally an SUV is headed towards him and he’s lucky, they stop and allow him and his kitten a ride, but at a cost. His freedom. Caleb Spade owns a casino and has ties to the mafia, when he comes across Seven, a beaten down, scared young man and his kitten, he takes him as his own and vows to protect him. Caleb is calculating, powerful and dominant. His driver that day, and one of his enforcers, Vortex is drawn to Seven too. Vortex is the typical daddy, wanting to take care of Seven and protect him and be gentle with him. Then we meet Havoc, and boy do I love Havoc. Havoc is down on his own luck, volatile and harsh but he feels something for Seven and that deep protective instinct flares hot. All three want to protect Seven and he badly needs it. Seven just broke my heart with his story so far. I can’t wait to delve in deeper and get the full picture. These three are hot as sin and each bring something different and sensual to the table. There are some sweet moments, heartbreakingly sad moments, anger inducing ones and sensual times, plus some laughs. Really this story encompasses all the range of motions. The characters are raw and gritty and morally grey and perfect together. It is written so well and has that dark edge I love from these authors while giving us these lovable and flawed characters with some yummy, steamy, kinky times. I loved it and I can’t wait for the next one. And omg I love the cats, especially Nacho. So adorable.

I needed something a bit darker and different from the sweet and swoony holiday reads I'd been going through, and this one was exactly what I was looking for!

I loved the way Seven's character developed through the story and it was easy to become intrigued and invested in the bits and pieces of his backstory that were dropped. Seven was the centre of the dynamic and it was interesting to see how it started to come together. The hurt / comfort was great and I loved how protective Caleb, Vortex and Havoc were. They all complemented each other nicely and between the three of them Seven got everything he needed.

The authors did a fantastic job of building the suspense through the story, it was difficult to put it down and I was kept on my toes the entire time. There were some elements that I'm not usual comfortable with, but I have to admit that it worked well here. The guys were very hot together and there were a lot of kinks and steam that I liked in this one.

Gambler's Conceit was an intense and entertaining read, which I really enjoyed! It was a great start to the series, and while the HFN was satisfying, I will definitely pick up the next one to see more of Seven and his men!

This is one of those books that I need to be in the mood to read it, and luckily I was because I enjoyed it a lot. It has a few of my soft ‘stay away’ from themes which puts me off completely unless the timing is right (which is hard when it’s an ARC).

I liked the men who wanted Seven, how they were with him, the story was okay, and I’m interested in what’s to come. Overall, it was intense, entertaining and hot AF

This book started off so interesting and these authors know how to write!!!!! But for the life of me, i knew this was MMM/M and i kind of wished this was just focused on Caleb and Seven. That would have probably been better for me imo. The fact that Caleb is this big mafia guy, but he just shares his pet to his guys?? And just hires a gambling addict on the spot?? To FUCK his twink? Like ok, i will reiterate again that i knew this was a poly story, but UGHHHHH… this would have been so perfect if it was just focused on Seven and Caleb.

Dunno if im gonna continue the series, but I do want to know more about the sweet precious boy, Seven 😩😩

Love that the cats are safe thank god. Love the CW about that too lol.

This is a dark #whychooseromance with Seven, Caleb, Vortex and Havoc. MMM/m

I absolutely adored Seven. He has only just shown us a glimpse of who he is and this is only the first book of his story. So I’m sure we’ll get our hearts completely wrecked when his story is revealed more. 🥺 But, luckily he has three men to help him heal. And three men to maybe rough him up a bit 😏 and then to comfort him and then do it all again. 🥰

I also loved Havoc, he was hot and impulsive and yummy! Vortex was adorable with his need to keep Seven safe and happy. 🥹 And Caleb was so delicious and in control! 🤩🙏

I hope we’ll get the second book soon, as this is only the first and I’m fully invested. I need the rest of the story! 🥰❤️

Holy 😳🤯🫣

That got so intense for a bit… I’m supposed to be unwinding so I can go to sleep but noooo, I just had to finish.

So how long do I have to wait for the next book???

If you’ve read any of Rai’s or Adara’s books before then you know what to expect.

Imma need some “things” to get their comeuppance soon too.

Highly recommend.

I received a free copy of this book from the authors and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Thank you for the arc!
Also this book came out on my birthday 🎂
I enjoyed reading it, how all the characters interacted with each other and developed a bond.

Seven is so sweet and sad, he really deserves the best with his guys. I'm glad that they're all so protective over him and offer assurances that he will be safe.

That ending though?!? It seems like their story is just getting started, and honestly I'm excited to see what happens next.

Read for a group challenge week 8. It was alright but not a series I'm going to continue. Caleb was all mine mine mine. Vortex felt like he was filling in numbers and Seven was secretive to the point nothing about him was really revealed. I did like Havoc. He was a fun character and was willing to take on Caleb and Vortex if Seven was in danger. No surprise with Grant. Had a couple of fun moments.

Seven was complicated for me. I couldn't understand him most of the time but I know his behavior is justified because of what he went through in his life. I want to get the full story eventually.

I loved Seven and his men. Seven was trying to get away from a bad situation to end up being trapped in another situation. Seven became Caleb pet and wasn't allowed to leave the casino. He had to tell Caleb, Havac or Vortex if something is going on or wrong. Seven's family tried to kidnap him and send him back home after someone worked for Caleb betrayed him and called Seven family without permission

If you like your books with a why choose theme and crossing swords with some dark themes and a traumatic past thrown in, this book is for you. This read is a dark MMMM mafia romance with a diverse cast of characters. I really enjoyed the diversity and how the personalities of all the men worked in support of Seven. Our main guy. The one who steals the hearts. I cannot remember the last time I read such a strong yet utterly broken character like Seven. He really got to me. He is such a product of his circumstances and you really see that in his forced captivity at the hotel and casino. It is very difficult for him to trust in Caleb, Vortex and Havoc, despite them giving him what he needs and what he wants. Well mostly, cause you know, the whole forced captivity thing, lol. Seven ensnares them, making them so utterly devoted to him, but he can’t see their loyalty and devotion. His past and everything he has been through makes him blind to it. His emotions are a total rollercoaster and it makes his character intriguing.

The men, Caleb, Havoc and Vortex embody such different personalities and characteristics, you will find at least one you like. Caleb is hard and unyielding, yet he is very intuitive when it comes to Seven and what he needs. Vortex is the teddy bear. Don’t get me wrong, he will mess you up, but he is the gentle giant for Seven. Havoc is the unpredictable storm who works perfectly in tandem with either Caleb, whom he shares a violent streak with, or Vortex, who he shares a gentle side with.

The dynamic of all of these men was well written. Intermixed in the evolution and progression of the relationships is the mystery of Seven’s past and how it is catching up with him. We find out some secrets but not all. And there is still a lot to unravel with Seven and his trauma. Book 1 just scratched the surface and I was very glad to see this groups story continues in book 2.

I don't even know where to begin... this book, wow, this book is a lot. In the best way, if you ask me, but tbh it's not a book for everyone.

This is a dark romance trilogy, so the story will continue in the next two books. Keep that in mind. This being said, you bet the themes discussed in this book are dark. Not regular dark, mild dark, kinda dark, no, no, DARK DARK. Check for TW and CW.

Seven is a hard character to read about sometimes. He is so precious. You wanna do anything in your power to protect him, just like Caleb, Vortex & Havoc. These 3 have a common goal, and that is to keep Seven safe.

Their relationship is unconventional, and I could bet all the money in Calamity City that it is NOT for everyone. The faint of heart should not touch this one if they're not ok with all the TW. I don't want you to badmouth this book just because you can't handle it.

These characters have baggage, heavy baggage, all of them, combined... you can only imagine. Navigating what they have is so hard sometimes because of this, and of course, when things start to go a certain way, sht hits the fan... spectacularly... in the worst possible way.

I love every character individually, and I love all of them together. I think they would not function this well if one of them was missing from this equation, and my baby Seven needs all the protection and all the love in the world.

I can't wait to see how things will progress in book two because what happened in the last 20% of the book will leave some deep marks on everyone, especially my precious boy, and I'm curious how they'll navigate all that.

For me, this book was a 10/10. I'm so happy I decided to give it a try. This is definitely a story I will think about for a long, long, long time.

🔥🥀Gambler’s Conceit //Calamity City series //Adara Wolf & R. Phoenix🥀🔥

Adara Wolf, and R Phoenix have done it again! They’ve taken a downright dirty and salacious story and had me all in my feelings about it! Seven is the most broken boy to broken boy. He is self-destructive, needy, and damaged. But so lovable and endearing at the same time.

He finds the exact care and protection he needs in his three DOM’s: Caleb, Havoc, and Vortex. This story is the first in a series that will continue around this poly relationship. It is high heat, suspenseful, and absolutely intriguing!

This is Adara Wolf and R Phoenix at their best. With this being the first in the new series, if you haven’t checked them out yet, now is the time!! 10 out of 10, cannot wait for more in this story! Seriously I DEVOURED this one 🥵🖤.
