There's all the difference between forgive and forget.

Nothing in Sky’s life looks the same since she met Bastian-exiled Ailuro, love of her life, and his own worst enemy. The revelations of the last few days, days that saw the end of Bastian’s ninth life, what should have been his last, have rendered her life unrecognizable-but survivable.

Bastian can’t claim the same.

He only lives with his sins in the hope of keeping Sky out of Maarjaaran hands. His hope lies in hers. And she’ll do anything to save him. Unfortunately, the only thing that might work demands far more from her than simply giving in to the Maarjaaran marks.

NOTE: This is book 2 and won't make sense without first reading 9th Life, book 1 of The Naming of Legends.

New Adult Paranormal Romance

Zookeeper-turned-author Wendy Beck is more accustomed to wrestling gators than grammar. She has a conservation biology degree from Oglethorpe University and learned a whole lot of 'hands-on' studying killer whales in Puget Sound, loggerhead sea turtles on Cumberland Island, and everything else at Noah’s Ark in Locust Grove. She went on to serve as the animal caretaker for Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail in Athens for four years before moving back to the Atlanta area.

She lives with the love of her life and personal hero, Mike, and can be found reading, running an independent bookstore, practicing kriya yoga, and more.

I. Don't, Even. Know. Where. To. Begin. This book put me through hell and made me like it. Love it! By the One, Beck weaves a wicked tale! Nothing black & white, cut & dry, good & bad in this story. Just impossible decisions and desperate devastating choices.
Toss aside whatever you are reading people because this book... this book...
I need book 3, Beck. NOW!

Must have book three now! Of course, it might help to catch a little sleep first. I literally couldn't put this book down!

I thoroughly enjoyed book one of this series (9th Life), but this one definitely topped it. Although it's not quite the easy, fun read I so often look for, it had me addicted from the beginning. It was quite the roller coaster ride of every emotion imaginable.

It's rare to become so invested in the lives of characters, but I found myself needing to know how they could possibly work their way through the difficulties life seems to hand them at every turn. Even during the rare times I had to set the book down to deal with real life, I couldn't help but think about it.

My only disappointment is that book three is yet to be published...sigh. I can't wait for Skybound - and I really look forward to getting to know Naiwen - she shows up very late in the book and is quite the character!

After reading the first book of this series I was totally in love with Bastian and almost jealous of the relationship he had with Sky. Theirs was something special a once in a lifetime love that withstands whatever is thrown at it.

Book #2, The Forgotten did not disappoint. In fact it tested that fairy tale romance and had me booing, cheering, gasping, crying, swooning and even fanning myself a bit as the passion erupted. All of this while delving deeper into the shifter society of the Maarjaaran. Again, the author Wendy Beck delights with a well-rounded book that doesn’t sacrifice a background story for the sake of having amazing characters and relationships.

That being said, I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the series and will keep my eye on Wendy Beck for years to come. She’s an up and coming author with a ton of potential and a fluid style that allows me to lose myself in her work.

This was the first and likely only time I have ever enjoyed being tortured. Beck paints you into an impossible decision with the most gut wrenching outcome. Seeing as you are already in love with characters from 9th Life, The Forgotten is such a thrilling and painful ride to take with them... but oh so worth it.

Along with enjoying the story, it caused a level of soul searching within me that rocked me to the core. This story truly captures what people are capable of in the name of love and it is beautiful.

WARNING: Starting this book means finishing it immediately. This is not a story you can walk away from. You will rather put a campfire out with your face than put this book down.

This is my favorite book by Beck.

Complications arise for Bastian and Skyler that force painful decisions and up the tension. Her supernatural beings are engrossing and imaginative.

Bastian and Skyler explore a physical relationship in this book and by the time they make love, you are so engrossed in their committed relationship that it takes your breath away.

The Forgotten is a book that I quickly devoured and left me hungry to know how the series will conclude.

This book was such a wonderful torture to read. I can't remember any book ever pulling such strong emotions out of me, or keeping me glued to the pages to see that the SOUL-WRENCHING THING THAT WON'T BE SPOILED HERE is resolved, and to make damn sure that the HORRIFYING OTHER THING THAT I ALSO WON'T SPOIL never actually happens. This is not a calm, relaxing read, but it is an amazing story.

The magic of Sky and Bastian's world came alive again in this story and held me captive once again. My heart both soared and broke in turns with this book. I find myself wishing to be back in their world and cannot wait for next chance to be immersed and carried away again.

Sky and Bastian's journey will leave you heartbroken, breathless, and dying for more. This is a beautiful series and it will grab you by the heart. Be prepared to never want to put this series down from the second that you pick it up!

3.0. I’m torn. The story was great, and Wendy Beck’s love of writing and her enthusiasm about her subject matter is obvious throughout the book. But while I was able to grasp the gist of the plot, I got bogged down in some of the details.

(Pre-review note: I do a lot of cutting and pasting in my reviews, so I’m truly sorry if I leave details from one of my previous books.)

Plot:
At the end of 9th Life, Sky used her gifts resuscitate Bastian, who was sacrificing himself to keep her safe from himself and from Caleb. The two then escaped the Maarjaarans and had an impromptu wedding to celebrate their bonding, so the book ended on a happy note. The Forgotten does not start out on that same note.

Bastian, while still in love with Sky, can’t get over the fact that he accidentally killed so many people, and he’s mired in his guilt. Sky is afraid that he may give in to that guilt and lose himself or his life. To prevent that from happening, she takes drastic measures that may change both of their lives forever.

Characters:
I think the change in Bastian’s personality was one of the things that bothered me most about the book. From 9th life, we knew he had a tendency to be self-loathing, but he balanced that with other traits. In The Forgotten, he was downright morose. As the book’s description says, the only reason he doesn’t kill himself is to keep Sky from living with the people who attacked him.

While still likable, Sky also changed quite a bit. She went from being laid back and trusting to automatically assuming the worst and constantly worrying about it. She even changed her name in this one. She also lost some of the snarkiness that made me laugh in the first book. And (without giving away any spoilers) even though she knew Bastian’s primary reasons for staying with her, she completely ignored everything he wanted and did the complete opposite, which – for the most part – resulted in disaster.

The supporting characters include Daniel, Caleb, Kirren, Lauren and several of the Maarjaaran kindred. Sky has grown closer to Kirren and Lauren, so that’s a positive. In terms of the males, though, it’s really hard to know who to trust because it seems like they are all in love with or want to sleep with Sky. The marking and combining of the strongest gifts explains it, but it still bothered me. Bastian’s friend, Taren, shows up briefly, but we can’t even trust him because the purpose of his visit is to deceive Bastian upon Sky’s request.

Writing:
In 9th live, there were a couple of places where I was confused, but in The Forgotten, I spent a good chunk of the middle of the book that way. I understood the basic plot, but there were either so many details (or maybe not enough details, I’m not sure) that I found it hard to understand who was doing what and why they were doing what they were doing. Everything did eventually become clearer. Also, Sky and Bastian’s banter was one of the things that made 9th Life so entertaining. That was missing in this one.

In terms of content, the description mentions that there are sexual situations, but they don’t go into a lot of detail. And on a positive note, the book was very well-edited.

The Bottom Line:
The end of the book actually took kind of a funny turn. It was like one of those Shakespearean plays where all of the characters thought they knew what was going on, but it turned out everyone was wrong. The issues are (for the most part) resolved at the end of the book, but there is a third book that continues Sky and Bastian’s story. I do like the characters a lot, so I will most likely continue … just not as enthusiastically as I have done with other series.

The devotion, the challenges, the mind blowing difference of worlds will have me reading and rereading this book. Now--where is the last one because obviously this story isn't about complete!

This book. This. Book.
I can't even begin to tell what this put me through. I enjoyed book 1 but this was next level. Exquisite torture. I'm trying to remember when I've needed a situation to be resolved NOW. oh god oh god oh god...
Again no cliffhangers thank the maker. But definite path forward and I only needed a day to collect myself before continuing. Highly recommend the trilogy be read back to back. As if I could have put it down.

I've seen authors who rate and won't rate their books. I didn't for years though I could see both points of view. I waited until I reread them many years later and no one else was tripping across them and man I love them.
