The Thorne at My Side: A dual POV enemies-to-lovers romance with a secret identity twist

Rate this book
The Thorne at My Side is all your favorite enemies-to-lovers romantic comedies rolled into one.

Okay, time for a reality check. I’m 36 and my career is exactly where I want it to be. My personal life? Not so much. I have had less than seven, but more than five, second dates in the last three years. Even fewer third dates. Time to outsource. SMS Connect is DC’s hottest matchmaking service and I’m hoping it lives up to the hype. So far so good. My match, DCFox, is incredible.

The problem is, DCFox is only available via text for twelve weeks. SMS Connect rules, not mine. So while I wait to meet him I’ve gotten myself into a no-strings-attached, bedroom arrangement with Austin Thorne, the man who stands for everything I’m against. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

With a week to go before the presidential election, my body isn’t ready to quit Austin Thorne but my heart is all in with DCFox. What if my physical connection with DCFox leaves something to be desired? What if Austin isn’t the silver-spoon-fed baby billionaire I thought he was?

Another good read from EMB! I’m a sucker for characters from other books popping into each other’s stories. Austin and Maggie’s story was so wholesome - figuring out who you are and what you want out of love, life, and a career! Plus, it has the right amount of spice to keep things interesting.

For fans of The Man by Taylor swift
At first I was hesitant to sign up for this ARC because the inherent political nature of the book. Personally I am not one to mix politics and pleasure. I signed up anyway because I would like to think I push myself past my comfort zone frequently. However upon opening the book to the author’s note my trepidation subsided marginally and I found myself open to the general idea of the book. As I got further into the story I fell in love with Austin (the male main character). I mean talk about a man who is OBSESSED with his woman!!
The story overall made me smile frequently and had me cheering for the changes Austin makes in his life. Austin is patient, understanding, and funny. Maggie is strong, intelligent, and responsible. They compliment each other so well (even when they don’t want to admit it)
This book is for fans of romance movies! The references throughout, the sweet banter between the two MCs, good mix of spice and plot!

I read this as an ARC and reviewed it for free! I am so honored to have been trusted with it thank Erin!!!

Plot- or character-driven? Character
Strong character development? Yes
Loveable characters? Yes
Diverse cast of characters? N/A
Flaws of characters a main focus? No
4.0 ⭐️

Fast paced, witty and spicy 🌶️!!
The trifecta in my opinion.

This book does a perfect job of balancing out enemies to lovers in a corporate setting.
Nothing says enemies to lovers like telling him you hate him while taking off his clothes 😅😅 loved it.

And can we just take a second to acknowledge how hot Austin making a show of taking his glasses off every time before they merged 😏I don’t know why but I found that so bloody hot 🥵 (micro trope obsession unlocked) 🔓

I love that there was no third act break up, because at 70% I was really worried that was going to happen, but the ending played out perfectly.

The characters have amazing chemistry and the banter was fantastic.

Great writing, great story, great characters!!!

This was my second read by this author and I feel like her writing is definitely different and mediocre. I feel like going into this ARC I was excited bc it was supposed to be a an enemies to lovers romance, but I feel like there was too much about the different politics plot to really focus on the characters. I really liked the idea of the premise, but I feel like it just wasn’t executed very well. I love that Maggie was a baddy, but I feel like her and Austin’s relationship was almost surface level and just no chemistry was there I feel like. This book honestly just wasn’t my fav.

I really enjoyed this book! I felt like this was a true enemies to lovers romance book and I was here for it! This is one of my favorite romance tropes and I felt like the author did a really good job in this regards!

The banter between the main characters was hilarious and I felt like the plot was very interesting and original. I love the character growth within the book and I appreciate the realness the author gave the relationship between the FMC and MMC.

You’ll enjoy this book if you like:
•Enemies to Lovers
•Dual POV
•Workplace Chemistry
•Friends with Benefits
•Textual Relationship

I’d like to thank Erin Bassett and Bookish Bubbly PR for the advance reader copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon an ARC sign up for this book. I started it trying to prepare myself for a politics based book and at first the interactions weren’t great because of strong political feelings, but that eventually took a backseat to Austin and Maggie. I read a book very similar to this earlier in the month and both times I say “are men really that dense?” Overall I very much enjoyed it and laughed out loud at things Austin (and Felix, honestly) would say. I hope to read more by this author in the future.

Loved it!!!

So, You've Got Mail is one of my favorite movies ever and when I read the blurb about this book coming out, I knew I wanted to read it.
I liked the similarities and differences yo the movie but I loved that the author brought it into the 21st century and that the crossroads that Maggie found herself at and what she was going through were extremely relatable. I also liked that Austin's POV was real and we really got to see and feel what he was truly feeling.
Honestly, it's very well written and truly moving. Looking forward to more books from Erin.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. The romance was so good in this, unfortunately I learned that I’m not a big fan of politics in my stories. Erin is still an insanely talented writer and I love her writing style. The romance hit but the politics was just not it for me, still liked it a lot overall.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️

The Thorne at My Side is an absolutely delightful rom-com set against the backdrop of a (fictional) presidential election, making it feel current and fresh. Erin Marie Bassett weaves a fantastic “frenemies to friends-with-benefits to lovers” story that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Maggie, a strong, independent political strategist, and Austin Thorne, the cocky billionaire she’s not supposed to like, make for an irresistible pair, and their slow-burn romance unfolds naturally and enjoyably.

From the beginning, Bassett builds a story you can trust to deliver a happy ending, with hilarious banter, multi-faceted characters, and writing that flows effortlessly. Maggie is a great leading lady—smart, driven, but also flawed in a way that makes her journey toward self-discovery relatable. She’s reevaluating the career path she’s been on, a struggle many readers will connect with. Austin, on the other hand, is the perfect contemporary book boyfriend: confident, a bit cocky, but with plenty of emotional depth and room for growth. The way he both challenges Maggie and supports her career is refreshingly heartwarming.

One of the book's strongest points is how smoothly Bassett handles the central conflict. There’s no jarring third-act breakup or betrayal or big fight—just a well-thought-out, meaningful obstacle that fits the story. This is a safe book, with a cozy feel that’s perfect for readers who enjoy tension without great bouts of angst.

The texting subplot with DCFox, Maggie’s SMS Connect match, is another great element that adds layers to the romance. You’re just as invested in her connection with DCFox as you are in her physical relationship with Austin, making the slow unraveling of both relationships feel inevitable and satisfying.

And yes, the spice is definitely spicing! The chemistry between Maggie and Austin is electric, and Bassett knows just how to balance the playful banter with steamy moments, making the book a joy to read.

Bassett also handles the more complex topics of AI and politics well. Though both play a significant role in the story, they’re approached in a way that’s accessible to readers from all backgrounds. Rather than taking a hard stance, the book offers a balanced perspective, making it feel timely but never preachy.

All in all, The Thorne at My Side is a wonderfully cozy and engaging rom-com, full of witty banter, sizzling chemistry, and moments that are genuinely heartwarming. If you’re looking for a feel-good romance with smart, relatable characters and a satisfying love story, this is one you’ll want to pick up!

✨✨NEW REVIEW✨✨

TITLE: A Thorne at My Side
AUTHOR: @erinmariebassett

⭐ RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶 RATING: 🌶🌶🌶🌶/5

REVIEW:

Maggie is a speech writer for a female presidential candidate. Austin has just launched a new AI program that takes previously written speeches, generates new content, and populates news articles specifically geared toward individual users of the app. After the launch, Austin's company is called in to work with Maggie to generate "better", more relatable speeches. Maggie hates that Austin's software is being used to write speeches, but what happens when hate turns into something hotter?

Unbeknownst to either of them, Maggie and Austin are also using a text-based dating service where they can only communicate with their match through anonymous text messages until they decide to meet (at least 12 weeks after initiating contact). Surprise, surprise when Maggie and Austin are matched up with each other, and the written chemistry is OFF THE CHARTS. Can written chemistry translate into actual, in-person chemistry if they ever meet?

I feel like I need to dedicate a section of this review to Austin Thorne and his dirty-talking ways. We love an MMC who talks the FMC through each and every 💥explosion💥, and Austin was no exception! If you're a fan of "good girl" and "you can give me one more", this book is RIGHT up your alley.

Where on Earth do I even start with writing this review? I absolutely DEVOURED this book in less than 24 hours (probably less than 12 hours, if we're being honest), and I regret absolutely nothing about my choices. I met Erin at Sports Romance Con a couple of weekends ago, and this book was the first that she recommended to me (after taking her Book Boyfriend quiz!). This book did NOT disappoint -- a delightful mix of You've Got Mail and The American President (two movies that I adore!). This might have been my first book by Erin Marie Bassett, but it definitely will NOT be my last! 😍

“I just wanted to try it, not actually run around with sunrise coloured nails.”
“Sunrise?”
“It’s what the colour reminded me of.”
“I can’t wait to meet her… The girl who has Austin Thorne painting his nails and comparing the colour to nature has got to be someone special.”

Honestly, *chef’s kiss* to Erin Marie Bassett, who has written one of my favourite romance books of all time. Yes, I am an absolute sucker for workplace romances, especially with a good sprinkle of politics and a dousing of enemies to lovers. This book was so much fun to read, and I was completely absorbed into the world that Erin had created.

Maggie Collins is a perfectionist and overachieving career woman (relatable) who has now resorted to signing up for a new dating service called SMS Connect after a few too many failed dating attempts. Maggie is successful speechwriter for a presidential candidate, and Austin is the son of a very successful media mogul family, trying to pave his own way in the world with the development of a new AI news tool. The pair are completely at odds, in their personal and professional lives, and cue the drama, because boy does it unfold from here. I laughed, and cried, and my heart even broke for Maggie at one point when she finally let herself be vulnerable and had all her hopes and dreams shattered (IYKYK). I felt so connected to the characters, even the side characters, and I absolutely adored the witty banter and relationships that developed between all of them.

Erin does a fantastic job of writing a political romance that avoids political opinions. It was well done, and allows readers who are fans of the genre to really dive in without fielding controversial opinions and feeling like they’re just watching the news. She captures the stress and drama of DC and the pitfalls of trying to date if you’re in that world. There was a good mix of steamy scenes to balance out the plot, and I appreciate that this book had so much good plot! I will absolutely re-read this, and I’m so excited to read more from this author, and this world!

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Enemies to Lovers, Politics in the background (it’s not a political book), steamy romance and…..a messaging app. All of this can be yours when you read this book.

I love drama and this book had some good drama. All the parallels in Austin and Maggie’s universes were just chefs kiss. This story is so good. It’s fun, it’s hot, and overall it keeps you on your toes. You just want to them to stop playing around and get their act together. Trust me I was yelling a lot. Mainly because I just wanted them to win. I kept rooting for them for hard. And they kept playing with my emotions! But it is worth it in the end.

Maggie is 100% girl boss. I mean she has system and mindset that is so strong. I loved having a strong FMC. She wasn’t even the stereotypical type of strong. She was just herself and that meant a lot to me. Women in politics are often portrayed as a certain way but Erin does a great job of showing Maggie in a light that makes women feel empowered. Even Maggie’s internal battles with her feeling about life, Austin, DCFox and her career felt very realistic. I also enjoyed the consistent theme of feminism int the book. It was more about how women have adjusted to society to fit into the world based on ways they can make it while also commentating on the issue of male dominated industries. It was a perfect blend and also very educational.

Austin is a confident man on the outside, but he has feelings like everyone else. His character in my opinion was written very well. While yes he was a man with wealth and a business, he also struggled and had issues that I felt shaped his character in a positive way. I really liked the way he was written and how aware he was. The scene where he starts looking up information after hearing it from Maggie was really heartwarming. It showed that he cared and wanted to learn.

There is a moment in the story that I won’t spoil, that just made me really appreciate it. I think books can be steamy, funny, but also educational and inspiring and thats exactly what this book was. I highly recommend it and think that it’s a great read. Erin is a great writer and if you give this book a chance, you won't be disappointed!

Review: 𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒯𝒽𝑜𝓇𝓃 𝒜𝓉 𝑀𝓎 𝒮𝒾𝒹𝑒 was hilarious! Erin truly brings us a binge worthy romcom in this book and she just blew it out of the office with the banter, wit, snark, innuendo and the INSANE push and pull that Maggie and Austin had! The dynamic she created between them from the beginning hinted at how explosive these two would be and it is safe to say the Austin completely gobsmakecd me with how hard he fell and by how hard he denied the fall!

Erin was creative with how these two characters met and grew closer together in this book. The way they both hated each other at work but then had no clue they were online-chat buddies had me cackling throughout the book and I could not wait for them to each realize it. I do have to say though that Austin was a dumb boy with how he handled the truth once he realized it was Maggie all along! 𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒯𝒽𝑜𝓇𝓃 𝒜𝓉 𝑀𝓎 𝒮𝒾𝒹𝑒 is a enemies with benefits romance and I enjoyed the dynamic Maggie and Austin had behind closed doors, I found that they each were so perfect for the other yet in the light of day they could just NOT GET ALONG!

𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒯𝒽𝑜𝓇𝓃 𝒜𝓉 𝑀𝓎 𝒮𝒾𝒹𝑒 is spicy and hawt. Erin really nailed the benefits situation going on in this book and I loved every spicy minute! These two had insane on page chemistry but they also had quiet moments that added a lot to the book. Seeing them lower their walls was my favorite part of the story and I found myself rooting for them to get that HEA! While 𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒯𝒽𝑜𝓇𝓃 𝒜𝓉 𝑀𝓎 𝒮𝒾𝒹𝑒 is all about Maggie and Austin, I found myself enamored with Felix, Austin’s best friend, and cannot wait for his story to come!

Rating: 4.5/5; A hilarious enemy to lovers, workplace romance that made me sweat, laugh and rage from beginning to end!

The Thorne At My Side is such a wonderful book and read!

Tropes:
Enemies to Lovers
Enemies w/ benefits
Workplace chemistry

So let’s talk about it!!

AUSTIN(MMC)talk about a man who is Obsessed with his woman like YES!!
And MAGGIE (FMC) these two compliment each other perfectly even when they don’t want to admit it(trust me they didn’t want to lol)
I felt like they were meant to be!

Maggie’s is a no bs type of woman! GO GIRL GO! She works in a political campaign for someone and writes speeches for their campaign,Austin is a rich playboy extraordinaire he’s also working on a AI technology algorithm to write, and help people create their speeches, so Maggie instantly sees him as the enemy to her dreams, and career.

Eventually they meet on a texting based dating app where you don’t know each other’s identity for awhile and build an emotional connection first on this dating app later realizing “in person” that they’ve been talking to each other this whole time which is so funny because of the sparks flying, chemisty coexisting in the real life workplace setting!

The BANTER & WIT, the tension & chemistry is so so good. Like I mean Instant chemistry were they can’t keep there hands off each other oooh.
The way these characters developed especially Austin, he is so kind, patient and understanding towards Maggie which I loved so much! Then we have Maggie who is so strong, and intelligent and such a great a female lead character!

This book is for fans of You Got Mail meets
The American President! Enemies to lovers, enemies w/benefits & Workplace chemistry 😉👌
The Spice & plot work mix so well together!
I also loved the references throughout the whole book, it was so cute!
Erin’s writing, the plot, those characters and spice were chefs kiss👌😘

This modern take on a classic romance story (You’ve Got Mail) was very cute.
Maggie is a speech writer for a female presidential candidate. This job is her life, and she believes in her mission wholeheartedly. Austin Thorne is a rich playboy who has started an AI company that will be used to deliver news individually to people with their algorithm in mind and “help” write the political speeches. Austin’s technology, and thereby Austin, is a threat to not only her dreams, but her livelihood, so Austin is immediately enemy #1.
There was fire between Maggie and Austin from the word Go. It manifests in fighting, but also in intense attraction. It’s hard to know whether she wants to yell at him or ravish him. With all the stress she’s going through, her best friend suggests finding a man as an outlet. That man, to Maggie’s chagrin, ends up being Austin, as their chemistry is explosive and undeniable.

Meanwhile, Maggie has been texting with a man and falling for him on a deep level using a low-tech dating app that forces them to text only, no pictures, no personal details, for 12 weeks before meeting. Soon she’ll get to meet him and stop messing around with Austin.

As Austin and Maggie go on a journey from work enemies to benefits to friends to lovers, we get to see the real Austin, not the public figure. He’s so sweet and funny and thoughtful. And he has it bad for Maggie.
As her dynamic with Austin starts to shift, she’s forced to consider if she should explore with him or go all-in with her mystery man.

It’s hard to go into my thoughts in detail without spoilers. Even though the “You’ve Got Mail” reference speaks for itself if you know the plot. So, suffice it to say, as much as I enjoyed the evolution of the Maggie-Austin relationship there’s a lot to do with the mystery man conclusion that I have issues with. But, Overall, I enjoyed the book.

4⭐ 2.5🌶️

I read an advanced copy of this book, and these are my honest thoughts.
Thank you to Good Girls PR, the publishers, and author.

Yes it is based on political “ideology” but no specific political party and just a book about it based setting but no agenda on a specific political party. The FMC Maggie is a speech writer for Quinn campaign who wants to be the president and the MMC is Austin Throne son of a media conglomerate heir and tabloid darling. So this was like kind of like a slow burn, but you get to learn each characters and they developed into who they are. She is this female who has like a game plan, life plan, and a specific time. She wants to accomplish these dreams. Austin, he wants to take over his father’s company and his seeking his father’s Approval I like how you get to learn each character and their own development and also the development they have with each other. I especially love how they like we’re talking with each other, but not knowing each other was and I feel like that’s what’s beautiful a relationship not knowing how the person looks like that connection through words and then once they do find out that they’ve been talking to each other. It’s just beautiful and also the enemies to lovers and enemies with benefits. It’s just it is good. I also want a preface that Felix at the end remind me of donkey from Shrek when they’re going to far far away land and donkeys like are we there yet like, what do I get? So just a mini spoiler I really enjoy that at the end about Felix and he just is his bubbly sunshine golden retriever man of an energy.

I devoured this book in one day and it was such an interesting and refreshing read. I loved the twist on You’ve Got Mail and the political plot kept me really focused - especially with the fuel of the recent AI discussion in the booksta universe.

Austin and Maggie are both 30-something’s living and working in DC at the heart of a presidential campaign. The big snag is that Maggie is the head speech writer for the woman running for president and Austin is releasing an AI software that revolutionizes speech writing…what could possibly go wrong when these two collide?

As Maggie and Austin are forced to work together, there are sparks flying but are they hatred, lust, of more? And in the midst of all this, Austin and Maggie are both texting their SMSConnect matches who, obviously, are each other. When more sparks start flying for them in the “real world”, making the decision to pursue their texting buddy gets more difficult each day.

This story was so cute and well done. I was thoroughly invested in Maggie’s career and Austin’s attempts to grow in his father’s company. I loved the character growth for both parties when they accepted the changes in their lives and rolled with the punches, it allowed them to become better and more fulfilled.

The story progression was great and I honestly loved Felix and Elle’s intervention. They’re wonderful side characters and bright a lot of depth and levity to this story. Honestly, I am feral for Felix’s story. He was a great friend and made me laugh almost every time he was on page.

I highly recommend this one, especially if you’re looking for some levity in the current world of politics and AI discussions.

✨ I did receive this book as an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a breath of fresh air. I loved the badass FMC Maggie. She is a rockstar in a predominantly male role. I was hesitant about the political aspect of this book, but it played a very small part in reality. I loved the DC setting. The whole story was fun. It was You’ve Got Mail with cell phones. It was also reminiscent of The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy with the penpal relationship.

Maggie is a speech writer for a presidential candidate. Austin just introduced his new AI program that can write speeches, making Maggie’s role obsolete. The attraction and tension between these two are evident in their first interaction. Unable to ignore this, they make a “friends” with benefits arrangement. Feelings happen because, let’s face it, it is a romance. The steam was so good, too. Austin has a filthy mouth and the sexy way he removes his glasses…

Little do these two know they are both also involved in a dating program in which you are anonymously assigned a partner and communicate through texts until you can decide whether to meet in person. See where You’ve Got Mail comes in? Have I mentioned that it is one of my favorite movies? I was giddy.

I enjoyed this book so much. I was not expecting to be this invested. I like it when books take me by surprise, and this one definitely did that. It is available on KU now.

Quotes:
This incredibly smart, willfully strong, and excruciatingly beautiful woman is panting before me.

You make me better. You make me want to be the best version of myself. I want you to be proud of me. I want you to rely on me. I want to support you in everything you do. You're incredible and amazing and all the other adjectives you can think of.

I recently discovered this author and was recommended to read her work because her stories are captivating and addictive. It’s absolutely accurate.

Establishing a connection with Maggie and aligning with her ambitions for business success is effortless. The expectations placed on a speech writer for a presidential candidate are substantial in order to maintain accuracy. The words and talking points she formulates hold significance. When a company with an AI speech writing platform jumps in, she’s not thrilled. Although she finds the man behind the program attractive and hot, she is unhappy overall with this development.

Regrettably, Austin Thorne is the attractive man, and as their chemistry ignites, they clash in their pursuits of success. The sparks flew between these two, their witty banter and simmering tensions keeping me hooked until the very end. Certainly, there’s an unexpected turn in their “relationship” that is truly explosive when exposed, but you’ll have to read it on your own to unravel the mystery! *wink*

This story captivated me from start to finish, and I absolutely loved how the plot developed for the characters. Despite challenges, their journey had a satisfying HEA.

I do recommend this author this book, and I enjoyed my time with these characters.

I was fortunate to receive a complimentary copy of this one (thank you), and happily leave my review.

What a great storyline, the plot and the idea of SMS connect was such a interesting read. (They should have this in real life lol)

This book so good. I really enjoyed reading. I’m not much into politics and business but regardless the story between the two mains was enjoyable and I rated it 5 stars because I loved it so much.

This book has alot of political topics and talk about AI which is relevant and new to our current and real life today.

The two main characters Maggie and Austin were great. They both gave off strong , motivated and powerful vibes in their work environments but more personal, emotional and calm while using SMS connect and around each other.

The spicy scenes were so sexy. And I was surprised when it was the female character who instigated the FWB , you go girl!

I found the ending a bit slower and laggy a bit and then quicker and fast paced at the end but regardless I loved this book and rated it 5 stars. One of my favourite parts was when Austin was showing his true side as well as when the guys called the in “big guys” that part made me LOL.

Great read, would recommend!

Topics and tropes:
- politics / presidency
- business
- online dating
- secret identity
- billionaire romance
- friends with benefits
- sex
- enemies to lovers
- heart break
- social media / AI

I received a copy of this for my honest review

I absolutely LOVED this modern take on "You've Got Mail" - It's one of my favorite tropes, and it is done really well!

In this story our FMC is the head speech writer for a political candidate. Things have been going well, her words have helped the candidate move up in the polls and reach new audiences. But then she is introduced to our MMC, who is working at his family media company, and recently launched his AI Media capabilities. The purpose is to make content customized to the reader, but also help with speech writing. When the candidate chooses to incorporate the new technology - our FMC is terrified that she will lose her job. She is stressed beyond belief - and when her coworker suggests she needs a friends with benefits situation - unfortunately she only has eyes for her competition. All the while they have each signed up for a new form of dating platform. They are given a new phone that connects them to one person that the company thinks will be a good match, but they have to spend 12 weeks texting before they can meet. So now, she has a deep connection with this mystery person on the phone, a physical connection to a man who's work is literally putting her out of a job, and she doesn't know what to choose.

The Thorne at My Side ARC Review

i was very fortunate to receive an ARC of The Thorne at My Side by Erin Marie Bassett from GoodGirlsPr, thank you so much!! 🤍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️🌶️/5

“but maybe when a person, who has their own thing going on, sets it aside for a moment to support you they’re showing a deeper kind of love.”

this was my first time reading anything by erin and it didn’t disappoint!! i was actually surprised that i liked this book as much as i did! only because i was a bit hesitant about politics being one of the main tropes. I actually really liked the political setting for this story. i think erin does an incredible job of staying politically neutral so the story is really about austin and maggie's journey. and we as readers are still given a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes of a political campaign. but honestly this book is about so much more than just politics.

i adored austin and maggie! i was thoroughly invested in maggie's career and austin's attempts to grow in his father's company. it was refreshing watching two characters in their 30s navigate not only the high stakes of politics but also the twists and turns of romance. they both go through tremendous character growth and it made it so easy to root for them. i also loved the back and forth banter between them!! the tension, conflict, and angst was just the right amount and perfectly written. and the spice was definitely spicy! as a whole, i felt so connected to the characters, even the side characters, and i absolutely adored the witty banter and relationships that developed between all of them.

this was such a fun read and i will now be binging all of erin’s previous work!!! once again thank you so much to goodgirlspr and erin marie bassett for providing me with this arc 🤍

4.5 Stars!

I really really adored everything about this book. I loved Austin as an MMC and I thought Maggie was so relatable as well. The side characters were so well developed. I’m not sure how it happened, but as someone who fully supports childless cat ladies, I really did not like the Senator. How was I rooting for her and disliking her all at the same time? Maybe because she was so callous about Maggie’s feelings?

I didn’t take off stars for this, because it was a me problem. This book is 100% on point for this exact moment in the season of our lives. AI in the media, especially in the bookish community, is such an important topic right now. We’re currently in debate season for presidential candidates. I use reading as an escape from real life and there wasn’t much of an escape while reading the majority of this book. Unless you count the spicy scenes which were so well done. 10/10 wholly recommend reading spicy scenes at any time :)

My reason for the .5 star deduction was while the tension was built up, it felt like we were run over with it by a bull. Just an attraction and mild annoyance and then BAM, a kiss. I thought it could have been fleshed out a teensy bit more.

Right off the bat I know I was going to absolutely adore this book.

This book follows Maggie and Austin. They come from two different backgrounds and two different worlds that end up colliding. What was supposed to be a friends with benefits ends up into something else when not only do they spend more time together, but they realize they have been texting one another for months without knowing.

Maggie reminded me of the girl next door. Beautiful, successful, and more focused on work than her social life. My heart broke for her when the thing she feared most happened. But the ending she got made it so worth it.

OhAustin. I’m not gonna lie, at first I hated his guts😂 I felt like he was just so arrogant. And how could he do that to poor Maggie! But as he became more persistent, he started to warm up to me. And I was oh so proud of him at the end.

The side characters were absolutely perfect. They made me laugh hysterically. Definitely the type of people you want in your life to lighten the mood.

I laughed, almost cried, and smiled throughout this whole book. If you love enemies to lovers, workplace romance, and love a man that wear glasses, check this book out! It’s available now!

The marketing for this book at Romantically Yours Con was so good. I was walking by minding my own business when I was approached and asked to take a book boyfriend quiz. I peered at the table and thought oh no I’m not normally a contemporary romance girl this is going to be awkward. I took the quiz and found out that my book boyfriend is Austin Thorne. I listened to the author's book pitch and decided to try it and it ended up being the first book of my large stack that I read from the convention!

Maggie is a speech writer for a senator who is running for president and Austin’s family owns the media corporation that has created an AI news program that will make her job obsolete. Unbeknownst to them, Maggie and Austin both signed up for SMS Connect (an anonymous dating service where the company sends you a phone with access only to text and anonymously get to know your match) and have been anonymously texting for the past two months.

I loved the banter, tension, and spice.

If you love the following, you’ll love this book:
-Contemporary Romance
-Enemies to Enemies to Benefits to Lovers
-Hidden Identity
-Anonymous Texting
-Workplace Tension
-Dual POV
-Washington DC Setting

This book was so fun! I really enjoyed it and loved how everything turned out in the end.

Austin and Maggie are rivals/enemies in real life, and they're both taking part in a dating service. One that gives you a burner phone that you're able to text your match on (no photos or identifiable information allowed!) and you're allowed to set up a meeting after you've been talking for 3 months. They both really enjoy their matches and feel really close to them, but their rivalry builds their passion to spark a situationship while they're working a presidential campaign. Lines start to blur, and a lot of confusing feelings start to develop.

It was so fun to have the suspense build between these two and I couldn't wait for them to figure out who their matches were! The conflict was interesting, the situation was engaging, and I loved how things came together in the end. It was such a fun way to have the hidden identity trope!

Tropes:
Rivals/Enemies to Lovers
Political Romance
Hidden Identities
No Feelings Allowed

Thank you, Erin and GGPR, for sending me a copy of this book!

Such a cute romance that has you rooting for them to get together!

We follow Maggie, a political candidate's speech writer, and Austin, a tech mogul who is developing an AI platform to write speeches for political candidates. Naturally, Maggie and Austin go toe to toe from the get go, since his tech threatens her job and livelihood, but despite being on separate sides they have great chemistry.

Tropes:
* Enemies to Lovers
* Workplace romance
* Political themes
* Secret Identities
* Friends with Benefits

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved Maggie and how she was an intense go-getter career woman. Austin seemed prickly at first, but the more he fell for Maggie, the softer he got and the more I liked him. I don't usually read to many books with political plotlines, but I enjoyed it in this. Between the politics and the AI discussion, this book feels very timely. I also loved all the side characters that were introduced, from Maggie's coworkers, to her family, to Austin's sister, to his hockey player BFF (Bro Friend Forever).

This was my first Erin Marie Bassett read but definitely won't be my last!

4.5 stars!
