The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall: A Novel

Rate this book
A young woman forced to live with ghosts in a mansion frozen in time must decide between forbidden love and the price of freedom in this gothic fantasy where Jane Eyre meets The Haunting of Bly Manor, perfect for fans of Starling House.

At Thorne Hall, a grand estate nestled in the Berkshires, fifteen restless spirits roam, bound within the mansion’s walls since the Gilded Age. Elegy Thorne bears the weight of her family’s curse to preserve the mansion as it was in the 1890s, using ancient folk songs to keep the spirits secret and silent in order to avoid deadly consequences.

When a mischievous child spirit wreaks havoc on the manor, the Thorne family calls upon their trusted preservationist to restore the mansion. He brings along his son, Atticus – a vibrant man full of life and ideas of modernization – and Elegy is captivated by him, igniting a longing for freedom she’s never dared to embrace.

Torn between her desire to follow her heart and her duty to her family and its legacy, Elegy begins searching for a way to release the spirit collection back to the afterlife and set both herself and the ghosts free. With century-old secrets, peculiar magic, and spirits both whimsical and deadly, Thorne Hall will haunt and enrapture readers—and you might just not want to leave.

If you're looking for a book to read this Halloween, look no further than The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall. Its gothic atmosphere, morbid spirits, and tender romance will both enchant and unsettle you. The rewards are well worth the wait if you can get past the slow beginning.

4.0 stars.

˚ · .˚ ༘🦋⋆。˚ review starts here.

✒️ the writing
⤷ The writing strikes a balance between old-fashioned and modern, featuring elaborate and vivid descriptions of architecture and fashion. Ann Thomas skillfully evokes the mansion's dark atmosphere, creating a sense that it is suspended in time and exists in a realm apart from the world outside its walls. Even Elegy feels like she hails from a different time period compared to her friends, who lead modern lives.

⤷ If there's one thing I feel this book could benefit from, it's a glossary. Please. I struggled to keep track of all the characters at the beginning (there are so many names!), and a glossary of the Collection, at the very least, would have greatly alleviated my confusion.

⤷ Instead of catering to readers' ever-shrinking attention spans, Thomas takes her time with the story, honoring it from beginning to end. Her passion for bringing the story to life truly came through the pages, which is refreshing in an era where many books seem driven solely by marketability, filled with the same tired tropes and clichés. While the pacing is very slow for the first 30%, I appreciate a carefully crafted book that builds its narrative meticulously over one that rushes and leaves plot holes and narrative gaps.

🎥 the plot
⤷ I fully anticipated that The Spirit Collection would feature traditional ghosts lurking in the shadows of Thorne Hall. I was surprised to find that the spirits were corporeal, resembling undead zombies more than ethereal entities. The vivid descriptions of their decaying flesh, tar-like blood, and exposed bones intensified the novel's gothic atmosphere, adding a distinct touch of macabre which I surprisingly enjoyed.

⤷ I loved the contrast between tender and morbid moments. The cold, oppressive atmosphere of the mansion was palpable, while the warm sense of safety in Atticus' apartment provided a striking contrast. Each time Elegy arrived at Atticus' apartment, I felt the same relief and security she did, as if I could finally breathe easier and relax. Conversely, whenever she returned home, I shared in her fear and tension, yearning to escape and return to the safety of Atticus' apartment.

⤷ I hate books that rush to their conclusions, ending with a weak and disappointing finish. I greatly appreciate when the twists and resolutions are thoughtfully developed, and "The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall" excels in this regard. I thoroughly enjoyed the final portion. Although the clues pointed to some suspicions, I didn’t fully anticipate the twist! The epilogue was also heartwarming and provided valuable insight into characters beyond Elegy and Atticus. That's how you do it!

💗 the romance
⤷I would have preferred a bit more tension and a slower build-up. While Elegy's immediate attraction to Atticus was understandable, given her limited interactions with men outside of workers and friends, I didn’t expect their relationship to progress so soon. I was hoping for more banter and pining, but that’s just my preference. Nonetheless, their love was sweet, and I appreciate how Atticus helped her envision a brighter future—one she hadn’t allowed herself to hope for before.

🧸 the characters
⤷ Elegy is an exceptionally well-developed character, and we really see her grow throughout the story. I loved seeing her transformation from a fearful girl to a woman who could stand her ground, face her fears, and go after what she wanted.

⤷ Unfortunately, some characters felt one-dimensional. While the others aren't a significant concern for me, I would have liked a deeper exploration of Atticus' character. Beyond general descriptions of his appearance and profession, we don’t get to know him on a deeper level. At times, he seemed more like a plot device to facilitate Elegy’s development rather than a fully fleshed-out individual.

⤷ I didn’t expect to like Fletcher as much as I did, but she turned out to be truly admirable. She is incredibly brave and determined. Even after being trapped in an attic for years among the undead, she made the best of her situation and ultimately pursued her dreams. I was happy for her!

One Liner: Slow but atmospheric

Elegy Thorne is a twenty-five-year-old woman living at her family estate, Thorne Hall, and its resident fourteen spirits. Nestled in the Berkshires, the estate has been home to fewer humans and more spirits than necessary for decades. Now, with her father’s illness and impending death, the responsibility of managing the place is on Elegy.

She has long given up the desire for a life of her own. But when sabotage by a ghost results in renovation work, she meets Atticus, the son of the contractor (and her father’s friend). Elegy’s yearning for more and the weight on her shoulders suffocate her. It’s time to find a way to send the spirits back to the afterworld if she wants a chance at a normal life. However, the process will not be easy!

The story comes in Elegy’s third-person POV.

My Thoughts:

So… this has a contemporary setting. Everything gives a historical vibe but there’s a proper reason for it. Even the writing style feels historical, with those long-winded sentences and the narrator’s voice dominating Elegy’s POV often.

The paranormal part is the highlight. Since the story relies on spirits and ghosts in a house, the gothic element needs to be strong. The writing does justice to this. I could feel the creepy house, the stinky ghosts (who look like zombies), the dead garden, the oppressive weight on FMC, etc.

However, this one needs patience. It is very slow. The beginning 30% was at a snail’s pace but I understood why. The stage was being set. Things improved after that but the last section was slow again.

The FMC’s characterization was great. She’s a 25yo from this century living her life in the past because it’s her inheritance. She gradually becomes stronger but without losing her sense of goodness. NGL, I was annoyed at her a few times for giving in easily but the change in her arc is steady and believable.

The side characters don’t get the same depth. That’s okay because there are fourteen ghosts and a whole bunch of humans. While it doesn’t matter for most of them, even the MMC ends up as a lever for FMC’s growth. He should have been more than that given the love track and romance.

This is insta love but works from the FMC’s side. Since we don’t get much info about the guy, it’s hard to see why he fell as fast. There’s some steam but not much. The interaction between the two could have been better. The punch is lacking and so is the banter.

There’s a twist or two in the climax. One of them was easy to guess due to the clues provided earlier. The other was a surprise; sad too!

The detailed epilogue is quite satisfying to read. I like it when everything gets sorted and we get HEA. This does dim the atmospheric effect a little but by then I was ready for it to move to the background.

To summarize, The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall is a slow-paced atmospheric read with some chilly moments and a bit of romance. The writing style could take some time to get used to. High chances of zoning out if you aren’t focused. Still, a nice read.

Thank you, NetGalley, and Alcove Press, for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall by. Ann Thomas is a well-written gothic ghost story filled with intriguing characters that will captivate you and prompt you to reflect on what is truly important in life.

Elegy is a young woman who has grown up in Thorne Hall. Though is raised in an old home, she is never alone, as she has grownup alongside the spirits that inhabit it. Her father is the head of the house and the latest caretaker of the spirits. As part of her family's curse, they must live in the home, maintaining it and watching over the spirits that reside there. Elegy's father is gravely ill, and upon his passing, Elegy will inherit her family's legacy. However, when she meets Atticus, a young man brimming with ideas and modernization, she is faced with a decision she thought possible: her own freedom or her family's legacy. Thus begins her quest to release the spirit collection back to the afterlife, setting both herself and the Spirit's free.

I love a good ghost story, and this did not disappoint. Do not be deterred by the slow beginning pace, as you will miss out on this beautifully atmospheric ghost story. It was well worth the read.

A unique slow-burn gothic romance that had me by the throat! I absolutely fell in LOVE with this book and will need to get my hands on a finished copy when it comes out in February.

This follows Elegy Thorne, a young woman who is bound to a grand estate haunted by 15 revenant ghosts, as it has been since the 1890's. Her life is not her own, some of the ghosts terrorize her, she has an abusive father, and she is being forced into a marriage of convenience with her gay friend. She has never wanted something for herself, but then one day their contractor brings along his son Atticus- a successful man with a business of his own. And she has never felt more drawn to someone. He should be forbidden to her, but he cracks open her world and for the first time she begins to hope just the tiniest bit for the future.

This is being compared to Jane Eyre, and I think the vibes are definitely there. What's so unique about this is while it's set in the modern day, it feels older because Elegy lives in a time capsule. She's only allowed to wear antique clothes that already existed in the estate, very few updates have been made to the house, she doesn't have access to most modern technology etc. But that's contrasted with the people who come in and out of her life, connected to the modern world. It's incredibly effective at creating a sense of isolation and claustrophobia in her life. And because this is such a slow-burn novel, you desperately want her to somehow escape the responsibility she feels to these ghosts and her family.

The romance is so delicious, and the yearning is truly top tier. I adored this book and cannot recommend it enough if it sounds like your thing. I received a copy of this book for review via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

“Sometimes we seek such things knowing how it will end, what we will become, and yet we seek it all the same.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I loved the opening scene. 👏🏻👏🏻 One life-altering Samhain night of intrigue and chills that very much set the tone for a truly morbid Gothic vibe that carried itself even as the writing transported its readers to present day where the aftermath of that morbid night continues to permeate every passage of Thorne Hall. 👌🏻 A really enchanting, if not bewitching and lyrical read that from the opening scene envelops you in this hushed and foreboding feeling that summons you closer to get this cryptic chill to its premises. One that is both haunting and heartbreaking when the story truly claws its way into your heart and proves that despite its slow pacing, it still had surprises in store for you. ✨

Time donned many guises. It passed both slowly and in haste, flew when one was having fun, waited for no man, and healed all things.

And it could just as easily destroy as it could any of the rest of it.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I'm glad I decided to read it till the end. Despite the rather languid pace in which the pacing was set as it slowly divulged details into the fourteen spirits that haunted the manor, something compelled me to continue. I had to know what and who exactly came out from under and what sort of mischief The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall had in store for twenty-five-year-old Elegy Thorne, as she is set to take over as caretaker of their well-being after her father's ailing health falters at an alarming rate. 😥

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ But for a young woman who is literally forced to remain frozen in time - cut off from society and relationships - living in hand-me downs without the comforts of modern clothing or technological advances - it is the desperation to escape the trapped confinement of both her eccentric family legacy and that of the haunted and tormented spirits that take deep pleasure in tormenting her that pushes her to finally fight back.👻 Of course, it does not have anything to do with the obvious attraction she feels for the handsome thirty-two-year-old inspiring engineer to assist his father with the maintenance and restoration of the manor. ☺️

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ She becomes a character you not only root for, but one who shows steady growth into becoming a person who can and will break free of the control of her father's imposing limitations on her life. 😤 One that will lead her to defy her duties and follow her own path to freedom - rightfully and justly so. Living such a sheltered life has prevented her from truly living; hiding in fear not only for her responsibility being uncovered, but the fear of the very spirits she's been entrusted to take over. It is a difficult and challenging task, despite her hopefulness, one that eventually makes her realize that she does not have to be beholden to it anymore. 🤍🤍

And in that moment the peace of certainty settled heavy upon her shoulders, a welcome weight for she knew at last what she must do, and that what she stood to gain was worth the price should she fail.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ It is not only so much about living up to family principles and traditions, but having the courage to face the truth for what it was, as well, finding the truth and connection to being true to your own identity. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 The author very purposefully but skillfully guided her willful determination to follow her heart and make it believable. Her attraction towards Atticus, though rather instant, was very sincere and gentle. In a home that never felt like her own, spending time at his place was the perfect comfort of peace and relief that she so desperately longed for and what pushed her to finally have the courage to fight for the fleeting chance to let go of 'the past be that she might dwell amongst the living.' 🥺

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ With a cast of both the living and the dead, it would be difficult to develop each character, but I never felt lost with any of them. Their interactions had depth and history, which made it possible for you to care for them, too. They were active participants in the events that were unfolding. I did think the cursing and swearing was a bit extensive, but I get how it was to emphasize how Elegy was breaking free of the restraints of her past self. While I did feel that Atticus lacked certain gusto, as in he was pretty much just the outsider romantic catalyst who urged Elegy to finally stand up for herself, I was very much intrigued by the spirits - 'the first one was collected in 1902, and the rest over the decade that followed, bound to our name and bloodline.' 😟 They each had subtle nuances - both grotesque and welcoming - that made them a compelling collection that had twists of their own, that truly paid off. In style! Twice! That oh moment really worked wonders in making it a more commendable and worthwhile read for me. 💮

I want to extend my gratitude to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and J. Ann Thomas for providing me with an audiobook ARC of The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall in exchange for my honest review.

As a fan of Bly Manor on Netflix, I was immediately drawn to this title when I saw it advertised as having a similar gothic charm. I dove into this book with high hopes and managed to listen to the entire audiobook in a single day. However, I must preface my review with a word of caution: this is a slow burn, and there were multiple moments where I considered DNFing it.

Pros:
Gothic Vibe: The atmosphere Thomas creates is rich with gothic imagery that pulls you into the world of Thorne Hall. The setting is beautifully crafted and sets the perfect tone for a haunting story.
Exceptional Narration: J. Ann Thomas herself narrates the audiobook, and she does an outstanding job. Her voice enhances the mood and intensity of the story, making it an immersive experience.

Cons:
Pacing: The slow progression might be a turn-off for some listeners. It took time for the storyline to truly engage me, and the pacing could feel frustrating at times.

Complex Plot and Characters: There are numerous characters and plot points to follow, which can feel overwhelming. The intricacies of the plot made it a bit challenging to keep track of everything, and I found myself momentarily lost in the narrative.
In conclusion, while The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall delivered a captivating gothic atmosphere and exceptional narration, the complexity of the plot and slow pacing affected my overall enjoyment. For those who appreciate a slow-burn narrative with a strong sense of atmosphere, this book might just be the perfect fit. However, be prepared for a complicated journey through a labyrinth of characters and storylines.

Audiobook (13 long hours) narrated by the author, J. Ann Thomas
Publisher: Dreamscape Media

The author did her own narration and it is very good. As much as I did not like the book, I very much enjoyed the narration.
The audio was flawless.

I almost gave this one 3 stars, but in the end, the entire premise of the story was nonsensical.

It started off OK, not great, but OK. Pieces of the story were interesting and good, but they didn't string together well. I feel like there are some good short stories here within the novel, but all put together it's just bad.

Once the story was done, it went on to an extended epilogue that was just... Seriously at this point I just wanted the book to be over, and that is not a good sign. It droned on and on and on, which pissed me off.

Although it isn't listed as such, I am fairly certain that this is a debut novel. I do wish that the author would have considered writing a novel full of ghost stories rather than placing all of her ghosts in a house and building a story around that. I feel like I would have enjoyed the individual stories of the ghosts as those are the parts of the book that I really liked.

The spirits were the best part of this gothic and eerie read!

The pace of the book felt a bit off/inconsistent, and despite the intriguing characters and fantastic world building, it was just missing something for me. I do, however, feel like the vibe of this during the fall/halloween season may hit different. I did enjoy it and would read more in the world or from the author.

This is a book that's going to stick with me. The premise and execution were very well done and engaging. The backstory was heartfelt and Elegy's responsibilities vs her own desires tugged deeply at my heartstrings. I loved the side character of Fletcher and wish she had been more involved, I would have liked to hear more of her story and how she got stuck at Thorne hall. The book does move slowly, but it is worth the trip.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author J. Ann Thomas, and Dreamscape Media for my advance copy of this audiobook.

I have this weird habit where I DNF a book if it fails to get my attention by the 15% mark. The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall, with it’s slow pace almost made me put the book down for good, and yet something told me to stay for the ride. And I am glad that I did.

Elegy Thorne is bound to Thorne Hall and its fourteen spirits by blood, honor, and a promise made more than a hundred years ago by her ancestor. When Atticus Hart arrives and shakes up Elegy’s frame of mind, hope blooms within her as she fights against the curse wrought upon her bloodline.

Elegy’s characterization was by far the strongest point of the novel. Her simultaneous want for freedom and her acknowledgement that she can never have it is at the core of her being and all the decisions she makes. Her stalwart determination in the face of grim circumstances is a product of her grisly upbringing and it all ties in to the story.

Her relationships however, are a bit lacking. After all, there are several (living and dead) to which she has an established connection with. But even if I did think that we could have spent more time building deeper relationships, I still found myself misty eyed as I ended the book.

This book contains a lot of descriptions of architecture and fashion, both of which lends to the modern gothic atmosphere of the story. I, at times, found myself at a loss when trying to picture the grandeur of it all, but I still found myself fully immersed in the story.

There is a lot to take in with this book, especially with such a wide range of characters to keep track of. From Elegy’s ancestors, the Collection, Elegy’s friends both new and old, there is much to remember and much to be read about. I often found myself losing interest at the amount of infodumping that came after a character was introduced. I spent a lot of time reading and re-reading passages because I could not make heads nor tails of the prose or dialogue or descriptions. But at the end, it still lent itself to the story.

Overall, I am happy with my decision to finish this book rather than shelving it. Though I do have to say for future readers: stick with the book until the 35% mark!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Alcove press for the E-ARC!

”(…) she did not think he was lonely; not in the way she was, even though she was never alone.”

The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall tells the story of Elegy, a young woman forced to live with ghosts in a mansion frozen in time. Torn between duty and love, she must decide her own fate.

⟡•—— ・ ₊˚🕯️♱‧₊˚. ・ ——•⟡

J. Ann Thomas writing is extremely detailed and atmospheric which greatly helped to build the image of Thorne Hall in my mind. I was immersed in the haunting ambience of the estate from the very first page.
It’s very interesting how the author was able to bring forth historical fiction and weave it into a supernatural plot, creating a whimsical narrative that felt both otherworldly and grounded.

The characters are well developed, especially Elegy. Readers follow her journey as she transforms from a quiet and lonely young woman to someone who is strong and capable of making her own decisions. To be frank, all of the characters, even the ghostly ones, bring a unique dimension to the unfolding of the mysterious novel.

I do enjoy books on the slower pacing side from time to time and i do think that’s an element that added to the enjoyability of the book - it did not feel boringly dragging nor confusingly fast. However, other readers might find the pacing a bit lacking, especially in the early chapters.
The main reason why i’m sadly deducting a point in my final rating is because of the amount of cursing used throughout the book. It was not used in an overly obnoxious way but it’s personally something that i do not enjoy in my books.

For those who appreciate a slow-burn supernatural mystery-romance with a richly atmospheric setting, this novel is definitely for you. J. Ann Thomas embroiders an eery tale that stays in your mind long after you finish reading it.

ARC by NetGalley and the publisher.

Elgey Thorne lives a life that most people would never understand. Not only is she living in a virtual time capsule but she is also forced to not stray far from her ancestral estate home. And while most twenty five year olds are getting married or finishing schooling Elgey is preparing for the day she will become Thorne Hall’s mistress. For Elgey’s family inheritance includes much more than the place she calls her home, but also the unruly ghosts that are forever walking its halls. This is her duty, her life’s purpose. To keep the ghosts of Thorne Hall at bay. However when a leak caused by one of the manors more restless spirits occurs it sets in motion a new path for Elgey. One that not only includes the handsome handy man Atticus but also freedom.

This gothic ghost filled story was an absolute delight to read and encompassed so much more than I had originally anticipated when I first picked it up. We follow along as Elgey learns to navigate her soon to be role as the ghostly caretaker of Thorne Hall and if this is truly all fate has set aside for her. As time goes on and the narrative continues we get to see Elgey rebel and fight against her families conditioning and oppression which I thoroughly enjoyed. And while many will call this a simple romance and coming of age story filled with ghostly additions I have to say for me this book read as much more. At its core is a story about breaking the mold against toxic family traditions and expectations. As someone who has had to endure her own fair share of cycle breaking within my own family this aspect really spoke to me. Simply put this book was a gothic treat filled with great setting of a haunted manor, like able characters, a sweet romance, and of course the ghostly addictions of both friendly and not so friendly spirits made for a page turning read.

The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall comes out February 11th, 2025. Thank you NetGalley and Alcove Press for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall was an absolute joy to read. Elegy Thorne’s journey is haunting and strange as she navigates life in a mansion filled with restless spirits, each one unique and compelling. The atmosphere is pure Gothic magic—dark, romantic, and full of secrets. You can practically smell the aged wood and hear the creaks in the floorboards as you read.

Elegy is a protagonist who absolutely steals your heart. Her struggle to balance duty with desire is so raw and beautifully written. The spirits at Thorne Hall are incredibly unique--in fact the whole idea of a "collection" of ghosts is beyond original. And the romance with Atticus was a perfect slow burn, igniting just enough to keep you on edge without overpowering the story.

This is an absolute must-read for anyone who loves ghost stories with heart and a touch of mystery.

Thanks to Alcove Press and NetGalley for the early read.

A true genre-blender; I had a hard time pinning down the genre of this one! It’s a fantasy with a strong romance backbone, with a little bit of horror thrown into the mix.

The heroine Elegy Thorne is a quirky and peculiar character. She was raised in Thorne Hall, fully knowing since she was a child that her destiny is tied to the spirit collection. Once her father dies, she inherits the ghosts, and she will stay trapped in this mansion, as it will be her duty to keep them from misbehaving. Because of this, she’s had to give up all her dreams. Her father has her living in the past, with no wifi or easy access to the outside world. The book itself has a historical vibe to it, as Elegy must dress in old-fashioned clothes and has an antique manner of speaking. This introduces quite a bit of humor when she interacts with characters outside of the house, as they’re all living in the modern world. Despite the fact that she has little control over her own life, she’s delightful and sweet. She’s a compelling combination of kind-hearted and naive, all while being accustomed to regularly interacting with horrifying and decomposing ghosts. She’s such a fascinating character!

Atticus is her love interest, and he doesn’t feel quite as well fleshed out. Regardless, he’s a swoon-worthy hero, and I fully understand why they fell for each other.
The plot of the book is compelling, if a little predictable once you realize the story’s strong roots in the romance genre. If you go into this book expecting it to be more of a horror, you’ll be sorely disappointed. But the fantasy elements and worldbuilding are marvelous and the romance is *chef’s kiss*, so you better not complain to me!

I listened to this as an audiobook, and it was read by the author. She captured the essence of the characters and the world she created with masterful perfection. I love listening to audiobooks read by the author, because you just know that they’re putting the emphasis on the right parts and they’re getting the tone just the way they intended. We aren’t distanced from the story by a narrator’s performance of an interpretation of the book, and I feel closer to the story because of it.
All in all, I highly recommend this story if you enjoy a fantasy romance and aren’t afraid of a little gore folded in with the whimsy!

This book was dark and lovely in equal measure. The characters were vibrant, even the dead ones, and despite the slower pace of the story, I found that I was kept engaged by the lovely use of language and my affection for the characters.

I can’t do it! It’s too scary! I’m a wimp! 🤣

I found this book to be a miss for me because it was too graphic and morbid. I tend to go for lighter reads, so this is my fault. I'd read the summary and sounded too gripping to pass up. I'm sure many people will love it!

Trigger warnings: death, ghosts, blood, cutting of one's flesh, bleeding, dead bodies, decaying flesh, person in a semi-conscious state, vomiting

I'd like to thank Alcove Press for the e-ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

An updated and unique twist on your classic haunted house. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all the spirits and their quirks.
I was not expecting the twist at then at all which was a pleasant surprise.
This book really does have it all: romance, horror, mystery, found family and magical realism all rolled in to one story of a woman becoming who she was meant to be.
4.5/5 stars for me.
I received an arc of this title, all opinions are my own.

J. Ann Thomas's book, The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall, is a gripping mix of gothic fantasy and romance. It pulls you into a world where time doesn’t matter and the past still haunts the present. The story follows a young woman who ends up living in a mansion full of ghosts, each with their own stories and secrets. This spooky setting highlights themes of love, freedom, and the messy emotions we all deal with.

The plot is about the main character, Elegy, who suddenly finds herself surrounded by spirits trapped in a mansion that seems frozen in time. She’s got to choose between a love that’s off-limits and her own freedom. This internal battle drives the story, taking readers on a journey through desire and sacrifice. The ghosts, representing different parts of the main character's struggles, add depth and make the book more than just a romance; it's also about self-discovery and the hunt for autonomy.

Thomas's writing is easy to get lost in, with detailed descriptions and a story that moves at a good pace. She creates an atmosphere that's both creepy and magical, bringing readers into the mansion's eerie vibes. The vivid setting, dim hallways, creaky floors, and whispers from the past, adds tension and mystery. This gothic setting pulls you in, making you feel like you're walking through the mansion's shadowy halls alongside the main character.

The characters are well-rounded, making the story even richer. The main character feels real as she deals with her emotions and decisions. The ghosts, even though they're not alive anymore, are complex, showing us bits of their past lives and why they're still hanging around. The way these characters interact deepens the story, with moments of tension and tenderness.

Some readers might say the plot relies too much on gothic clichés, which could make it predictable for hardcore gothic fans. But Thomas's unique voice and emotional characters give a fresh take, keeping the story engaging. The forbidden love angle, mixed with the main character's fight for independence, gives readers lots to think about when it comes to love and the things we give up for it.

The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall combines love, freedom, and the supernatural awesomely. With its spooky setting, well-crafted characters, and engaging writing style, J. Ann Thomas's debut is perfect for readers who appreciate a thoughtful exploration of gothic romance.

Advertised as a “cozy horror,” I jumped into The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall a little unsure as to what that exactly means. I was not at all disappointed. This is a paranormal romance without someone having “spicy time” with a ghost, which if you’re wondering, the spice, while a lot for me, is probably more of a mild salsa to an avid romance reader. However, I’m not sure if romance readers would appreciate some of the gruesome depictions of the spirits; they look however they died. If you can juggle those things as a reader, then this one’s for you. I appreciate the history and research the author mentions putting into the actual place Thorne Hall is based off of. Elegy is wanton for living friends. Her father’s ancestors made a promise to tend to the spirits trapped at Thorne Hall, so she is constantly surrounded by the dead. With her father now dying, it seems she will never have the chance to explore the world. When the handsome son of the mansion’s preservationist drops by to help his father, Elegy can’t seem to keep herself from speaking to him. But how can she date a man who lives in the present when she is confined to the house and dresses like she’s from the early 1900s? Well, how can’t she? This was a fun read with spirits, magic, love, loss, and standing for who you are and want to be. The narrator did well on this eARC. Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape media for the chance to listen to this work while I play Sun Haven.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of The Spirit Collection of Throne Hall.

3.5/5

This had a rough start for me, I had a tough time getting into it. But as the story progressed it became hard to put down. I loved the gothic setting, I also loved that the story took place within 40 minutes from where I live.

I really feel for Elegy. Her situation is awful, and she believes that she has no say in anything in her life. She was born with her future already decided. I was so glad as the story progressed that we got to see her realize that she can decide how her future looks, not what her father expects it to be. I’m glad I stuck it out as the ending was very satisfying.

Besides the rough start, I also found it difficult to try and remember who was who as we are introduced to many characters right off the bat. Overall, I enjoyed the story.

·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ I really liked the atmosphere of this book. The gothic vibes? Absolutely there. The moody, shadowy setting of Thorne Hall was a strong point for me, and I found myself appreciating the eerie, almost cinematic feel of the environment throughout.

·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ When it comes to the characters, though… I was kind of neutral. I didn’t hate them, but I wasn’t really attached to them either. Elegy, the protagonist, grew on me a little the more I read, but she never became particularly interesting. She was bland and so were most of the characters. Nothing about them really stood out. I appreciated that they weren’t annoying, but they didn’t exactly jump off the page either.

·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ The romance element was okay but didn’t entirely work for me. I understood that Elegy was sheltered and isolated, so her immediate attachment to the first handsome boy she meets is kind of understandable, but it also felt a bit meh. I think I would’ve liked the story more if her motivation had leaned less toward romance and more toward self-discovery or a thirst for adventure. That would have made her desire to live feel more powerful.

·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ The pacing is where the book lost some ground. It started off strong. I was really into it in the first 20% but then it dipped and lost me for a while. It picked back up again around the 50–60% mark, which helped, but the inconsistency in flow was hard to ignore. It felt like a pattern of momentum → stall → momentum → stall. That back-and-forth rhythm pulled me in and out of the story.

·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ I think my biggest issue is that I went in expecting a little more from the ghosts and the paranormal side. What I pictured in my head didn’t quite match what I got, and in the end, it felt a little underwhelming. But maybe that’s more on me than on the book.

·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ Overall, it’s a decent gothic read with a strong setting and some good moments but the characters and pacing held it back from being truly memorable.

Thank you to NetGalley and Alcove press for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If this had just been ghost story it would be a 4 star read, as I did truly love the descriptions of the Spirit collection and their individual peculiarities. The romance itself fell flat for me, but I could understand her falling in love with the first man in her life that has ever told her her wishes matter. The use of music as a grounding for magic was interesting, and I enjoyed having the lyrics of the songs as interstitial supplements.

Then the final quarter of the book happened.

If the Canny folk were going to be so instrumental to the endgame they should have been introduced earlier. The concept of Canny was introduced in the first chapter, but it's then completely abandoned until the very end when they meet the man who taught Elegy protection runes that she just. never decided to follow up on. Who is also her real father. And it turns out the collection was gathered because the original Thorne patriarch, a man who has only been characterized as rich and very in love with his wife, was actually in love with the medium seen at the beginning of the book, who used him to bring back the ghost of her dead son at the cost of her own life? And the only way to reverse this was for Elegy's real father (a man she met once before who knew she was living in an atrocious situation but still left her there despite the fact he apparently lived just down the road) to kill himself? Sure. Why not.

When I picked up this book, the fact that it have a big romance plot line had gone unnoticed. And at the beginning, I wondered what is the story about and where are we going with all of this. Let me say you it was the best way to dive in. I'm not sure, I would be so invested in the story should I know what it is about.

Of course, I couldn't remember all 15 ghosts their personalities and stories, but I absolutely enjoyed this book. I have two or three dialogue that I would add some details to or change a bit, but overall it was perfect to spend 13 hours doing all the chores, all the walks, literally everything just so I could listen to this book
