a New Adult Romantic Suspense novella ~ about 100 pages
Jenna Davis has tortured herself over the death of her fiance. She's moved to a new city to escape not only the memories, but the shadow of her father, the senator. By meeting Brandon Richardson and succumbing to her desires, she takes a giant step forward in healing her grief-stricken heart. But Brandon has secrets that threaten to destroy her.
Recommended for adult audiences.
This is part one of a multi-part romantic suspense serial, and ends with a cliffhanger. The serial unfolds over six episodes of approximately 100 pages each. Parts one through six (the complete first season) are available now.
Mistaken is the first book in Renna Peak's romance series. The story is one that continues on in book two so it does end on a cliffhanger to carry readers over to book 2 instead of switching characters like most romance series tend to do.
The series starts with Jenna waking up kicking herself over a one night stand as she tries to sneak out of the place before being noticed. You see, after losing her fiance Jenna isn't ready for relationships but let herself get a little carried away with Brandon. Brandon however is not one to give up easily Jenna soon finds out.
Not a bad start to the series but as usual there would be a lot more story to tell after the abrupt ending to this novella length read. I couldn't make up my mind whether I actually liked the characters or not in the short beginning but boy did the author throw in a curve ball to keep a reader's attention to the series so who knows I may have to continue this one.
Whilst this story has the potential to develop and become a read that I would like, I cannot go on and read parts of a complete Kindle book and then be expected to pay around £28.00 for the "pleasure" of reading the full story.
There is no other way to say this but I truly detest this form of drip-feed writing - then to add insult to injury, the actual charging structure for each part of the Kindle edition. 21 parts of the complete story, but the first two are free. Every 83 pages after that are 99P amounting to a ridiculously costly way of reading a book. It also takes the pleasure away from the reader.
Added to that it ends in the must-have cliffhanger.

While I enjoyed this book I cannot justify going any further because the series has many books (13 that I can count) and if each novella was a dollar I could, but quite a few at $3 a piece. I'm not cheap but I pay $3 or $4 for a full size book. However, based on books one and two (which are free and amazon right now) it might be a good read in completion.
Mistaken is the first part of a book published in serial format, which follows Jen, who at the beginning of the book, is sneaking out of a one-night stand's house. The one-night stand in question is hunk Brandon, who would quite like to make the night before's actions a repeat thing. But Jen is not quite ready to jump back into dating, after her fiance Daniel was killed 13 months prior. Can Brandon convince her to move on?
Went into this with not very high hopes, and it wasn't totally bad. It grew on me. I hated Brandon at the beginning. He was very cocksure, and typical of a romance leading man, and he wouldn't take no for an answer. I also found him to be a bit stalkery. Just a tad. But I grew to like him. However, THAT reveal happened, and it shocked me. Did not see it coming. I really hope that in the coming parts, although I'm not sure if I'll be continuing with the series.
That was actually quite good. Quick read, interesting storyline, and one hell of a cliffhanger that has me racing to the next book to figure out what the hell is going on.
Title: Mistaken (Mistaken #1) Author: Renna Peak Series or Standalone: The Mistaken Series Rating: Five Stars Review:
Mistaken is a New-Adult Romantic Suspense serial (set of short novellas) that is told from the point of view of the heroine Jenna Davis as she attempts to have a life separate from that of her influential family, but despite her every attempt, seems to still have her strings being pulled, throwing her entire life into a tailspin.
For those of you that read this review and decide to check out the series the same way that I am, you should be aware that the first two installments are currently free but instead of picking them all up and reading them as a complete series, I am taking them one at a time because the story continues in multiple future installments.
It should also be stated before I get into what I enjoyed most about this particular volume of the series that this book does end on a serious cliffhanger that makes book two essential (which makes it being free that much better). In that way it also leaves a lot of unanswered questions so if those two things aren’t your thing, don’t pick this up. I will say though that even though I’m not the biggest fan of cliffhangers, if done right, they can be amazing and this was.
Jenna is trying to live her life after the loss of her fiancé, breaking ties with her family and starting over, finding herself at the start waking up in the bed of a virtual stranger, a move that based on the way she spent the earlier part of her life, is completely out of character.
Enter Brandon Richardson. Good God. Sweet from moment one. That’s what I pulled from my first interaction (essentially Jenna’s first as well) with Brandon. My favorite type of hero if I’m honest, but as with people in the real world, looks in this case can be very deceiving. Brandon has secrets, the same way Jenna does and it doesn’t take the author long to bring those to light.
I think what liked most about this first installment was how relatable the characters were, and even the reality of some of the choices they made. It all felt very organic to me. If I could put myself in their shoes, the choices they made, at least in the beginning made a lot of sense. (Jenna not giving her real name at the beginning is an example).
The overall dynamic between Jenna, her friend Mel and also the growing relationship and interactions later in the book with Brandon were well written and believable to me, again another instance of being very organic even if their jobs, the lives they lead are a little out of my realm of understanding. It all made sense to me and kept the pages turning.
The pacing in the story was perfect. I didn’t have moments where I felt there was too much telling and not enough showing. It showed throughout, and what wasn’t only made me want to continue reading in order to get answers. It was very well put together and kept my interest throughout.
Because of the nature of a novella series or rather a serial, I knew a cliffhanger was coming, and there will be some that will read this and figure out what it is before they even get to it. I have to admit that I kind of wondered if that was where it was going to go at more than one point throughout but even knowing deep down it most likely would go there, it still didn’t prepare me for the drop my stomach did when it happened.
This is where a well written cliff hanger keeps me interested and I want to dive straight into the next one. Book 1 introduces you to the characters and walks you through their interaction, attaching you to them while laying a lot of questions without answers on you, ones you just hope you’re going to have answered in book 2.
I’m so glad that I caught sight of these books because as I’ve alluded to in a status message as I was reading, these books are officially like crack me now. I am that addicted and they are just that good. I will definitely be continuing on with this serial and also checking out the other works that the author has already released. She’s gained herself a new fan and if she continues writing the way she has in this story, one for life. Fantastic story.
Jenna Davis is the daughter of a well respected and diligent man. At her work, she seems to only get recognised for who her father is.
After a one-night stand, the guilt eats her insides. unable to move past the death of her fiancè, she ignores this man's business card that burns a hole in the bottom of her bag. But fate has other ideas.
Brandon isn't your typical CEO Rich man. He's laid back and has a heart of gold. After sleeping with Jenna he can't get her out of his head.
Will this lead to a budding romance? or will this end in a disaster with a bit so great blast from the past?
I enjoyed this book. Not as much as I expected but I enjoyed the twist at the end. I did find some areas to contradict others and that's why I lowered my rating to 4 stars. in some places there was repetition and confusing but I mover passed that. I liked the writing style and characters also.
I loved this book couldn't put it down. A year after her fiance Daniel's death, Jenna woke up and notice that it was not her room and when she felt the man's arm draped across her chest she realised that she made another mistake and felt guilty. Before she was able to sneak out Brandon stopped her and gave her his number. When she went to work her boss Robert told her that a big company in Osaka, Japan wanted her to meet with their marketing people, but she noticed that he was acting strange. After seeing Brandon at the gym Jenna went out to dinner with him and found out that he was also going to Japan as well. When she landed in Osaka she was having problems at the hotel because they lost her reservation, but when she heard a voice behind her she knew who it was. With no choice Jenna agreed to stay with Brandon in his hotel room, but after spending the day together Jenna couldn't deny her feelings for Brandon any longer. The next day Brandon had already gone to his meeting and called Jenna to meet him in the lobby for breakfast, but when Jenna went to the lobby she couldn't believe who she saw standing talking with Brandon.
Awesome free book, likeable characters, was about to download the next instalment, (due to a cliffhanger ending) but then read reviews that there are another 19 books, and the price increases as you go along. The books are only 100pages in length, if that. I’m not that keen to read them after reading the reviews, and often the storyline doubles up. Would be an awesome read otherwise , but not keen on 19 Mini books. 🙄
I got a free copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed the story which had some unexpected twists, but did not like the fact that it was a series with a cliffhanger.
I liked this book, interesting story line. I read it in one day and only wanted to shake some sense into Jenna Davis twenty times. I would not have guessed the ending of this book. I will read more by this author.
I read the first part. That was enough for me. Stereotypical characters in hackneyed situations. Spare yourself the agony of a series that will run for ever -without getting anywhere.
First part of the Mistaken series. Intriguing and unpredictable reading with a final cliffhanger that forces you to buy the next chapters of the story to know how the story of Jenny and Brandon will end
First time reading a book by Renna Peak and her writing style was similar to Colleen Hoover for me. Easy to read but not the greatest writing I’ve read. The end has me heading for book 2 and I think I’ll enjoy the series enough to continue reading
Perhaps it is my fault for not knowing when some books from a series are only half of the story and merely a lure that forces you to buy another book to know the ending.
I was really into this book, despite its editorial short-comings, until I realized that it was a series of short novellas. In my defense, I got the first two for free somewhere and it wasn't until I finished the second one that I found out it wasn't the end, but barely the beginning. The story begins with Jenna having a one-night stand with Brandon. At least she considered it a one-night stand. She couldn't even believe she had slept with him after only having just met him, much less that there was a future in it. Brandon is convinced that there is something special between them, but he doesn't push it. Jenna's life goes on. She lives with her best friend and tries to forget that her fiance killed himself without even giving her a thought. She is convinced that it is some how her fault and punishes herself for it, at least mentally. That is why sleeping with Brandon was so unusual an occurrence. When Brandon turns up again in her yoga class, she agrees to go out with him. She is getting ready to leave for Japan and discovers he is going there also and they plan to meet up and sight-see. But when she gets to Japan her room reservation has disappeared and she feels lucky that Brandon comes to her rescue. The two of them are getting on great. They have a passionate night and when Jenna wakes up she finds a note to meet Brandon for breakfast before her big meeting. Instead, she has a meeting of another kind. There in the lobby is ??? Ok, I am not going to tell you. Read it instead, if you don't mind the whole series thing . I found the writing a bit amateurish. There is one place where the word "him" is in a single paragraph 7 times (and several paragraphs later another 6.) It just felt like it could use some editing to make it a more polished story.
I received this book for free with the understanding that I would write a review.
Initially promising, but crashes and burns. First Impressions: The novel started interestingly enough. A young woman whose father is a well-known Senator feels responsible for her fiance's death. She has a one-night stand with a guy, which is completely out of character for her. The factual setup was good, but it started to go downhill pretty quickly.
Plot: There was a big twist in Book 2 that you new was coming even if you didn't know what it was. Then after the twist it just got ridiculous.
Characters: In the beginning you think that the female protagonist is a fairly savvy businesswoman, even though she's at the beginning of her career, but by the end of book 2, she's acting as if it were the middle ages. I understand crazy family dynamics and the old habits that one can fall back into, but this was over the top. Jenna's BFF who initally was portrayed as a good friend, though a bit jealous of Jenna's advancement at her own family's firm, but by the end of book 2, she's acting like a 15 y/o without any emotional IQ whatsoever. As for the guys, I just have no words.
Romance: seemed legit in the beginning, but then the declarations of love are too soon and unsupported by the context.
Technical aspects: I don't recal being distracted by glaring grammatical or editing errors, but that could be because I was so distracted by the plot crashing and burning.
I really enjoyed this novella, and it surprised me. It had a good story line, and there are some secrets that keep you reading--especially the ending, which was just mean! Whilst everything isn't answered, I'm sure it will be at some point in the series. Mistaken is quite a tame read, which was a surprise as I was expecting more in the romance department, but Brandon seemed like a nice guy. For a freebie this was an enjoyable read and I'm glad I got the second book too. The only criticism I have is that the writing is quite repetitive. I felt the author needed to mix things up a lot more, especially the start of sentences that seemed to always start with a pronoun.
Overall though, this was a good read. I'm not sure if I can bring myself to pay for all the books in the series (as there's a lot), despite wanting to find out how things unfold, but I'll definitely read book 2.
Jenna Davis has been mourning the loss of her fiancé for thirteen long months. She has moved to a new city to escape the memories of her past. Jenna meets Brandon Richardson at an art class and has a wild one night stand with him. Jenna immediate regrets her actions that night.
Jenna is shocked to see Brandon again, he tells her their night together wasn’t a mistake. He sets out to assure of this fact.
A business trip to Japan unexpectedly throws Jenna and Brandon together. Will Jenna let Brandon in? Will Jenna’s past come back to haunt them both?
This is a short read. It is the beginning of The Mistaken Series. The book was well written and you immediately wanted to know how this story played out. I loved the beginning of this series.
Jenna is trying to move on after the loss of her fiancé, it has been a little over a year and she still thinks she doesn't deserve to be happy. When she wakes up next to the most beautiful man she has ever seen, she tries to leave without waking him up. Brandon goes to painting classes to meet women, but he is only interested in one night stands. Except when he brings,Jenna home, he wants more. Can Jenna move past the guilt she feels and live happily ever after? What will Brandon do when he learns who she really is? What happens, when her past comes back to haunt them both? This is a first for me from Renna Peak and I can't wait to start book 2 to see what happens next.
I am editing my review coz honestly if u don't want to allow the next parts of ur novels for free reading why giving the first do it properly like J.K Rowling did or do it the other way properly by giving access to stories for free like the first one even after some point of time. Just experienced two stories of this kind where first one is free n next parts r for purchasing n the Amazon is not giving the opportunity to buy it in my country so I will just stick to reading complete novels
This book starts with a promising storyline. Jenna is mourning her fiancée, Daniel, and she happens to have a one night stand with a good looking guy called Brandon, and as you read on, she constantly wonders if she could move on or not. I like the storyline, but having looked into the series and found out that they are a total of thirteen books, I am tempted to ask, why all those?
