Rate this book
Nocturnal Glow, the current Archmage of Canterlot, is dying. He has lived a long life, full of happiness and strife in equal measure. All unicorns must bow down to their successors, however... Twilight Sparkle is the most likely candidate to take his place. But she is going to need many lessons in magic before she is ready to assume his duties. So far, she has studied the magic of friendship, but what of the darker, and more primal magics? Twilight is going to need lessons from all three princesses before she's ready to become Archmage.

This story has been Jossed by Twilight's actual ascension to alicornhood in the show, but that's fine - it just branches off of the show's continuity now.

I rather liked it, it had some great worldbuilding regarding how magic and Equestria's government works and it had some great character development. I particularly enjoyed how Luna's lessons to Twilight regarding dark magic went - it inverted a couple of old tropes in new and refreshing ways.

There were a couple of things I found troublesome, though, that kept me from giving this all the stars. The most prominent problem was that Twilight's friends have essentially no involvement in this story, which is bad considering it covers pretty much "the rest of Twilight's life" within its scope. Twilight's friends are important to her, so omitting them entirely leaves Twilight's character incomplete.

I have read that Loyal is working on an extensive rewrite of this story, considering how good the good bits of this version were I'm looking forward to it. The story would gain a lot of stars from me if it just wove the rest of Twilight's friends into the background better, that was my only really major complaint.
