Ashton In the dark of one dimly moonlit night, a pair of piercing emerald green eyes peers out through the thick foliage that surrounds Vaughan Manor, intensely observing the pretty human female who had stepped out onto the wide stone stairs to look at the moon. The sleek black jaguar shifter turns and silently vanishes, but not before wondering why she is feeling such an unusual pull to a human, of all things. Because human women, no matter how pretty, are best avoided in a place like Jaguar Grove.
Lillibet When Lillibet Vaughan inherits Vaughan Manor unexpectedly from an unknown family member, she is startled to learn the mysterious mansion has long been considered a supernatural portal by the members of the tiny town of Jaguar Grove—and she is now its Guardian. Scoffing at the silly superstition, the human Lillibet nevertheless moves the one hundred twenty miles from her home in Tampa to Jaguar Grove, welcoming the chance to escape her suffocating ex-girlfriend and thankful her career as a romance writer makes it possible for her to live anywhere.

When Lillibet meets Ashton Panthera, she is at a loss to explain the strange, inexplicable attraction she has to the masculine of center Native American arborist. Ashton, however, realizes that Lillibet is in fact more than She is a hereditary witch of considerable power, with access to ancient knowledge, spells, and lore. Bound at birth by her long-dead mother for her own protection, Lillibet holds a formidable power and knowledge within herself that has been blocked from her for her entire life.
And Lillibet is Ashton’s mate.
Zagan Salazar, the Black Warlock of The Tombs in The Underneath, has been biding his time for centuries, waiting for an opportunity to destroy the Vaughan witches and free the demons trapped in The Tombs. Just as he thinks he wins—that the Vaughan witches are finally no more—Lillibet’s binding is shattered by her jaguar shifter mate, her transcendent power flaring for every magickal creature from miles around to see. In a killing rage, Zagan vows that the last surviving Vaughan witch will not impede his plans to control the supernatural world.
When it becomes clear that Zagan is a dangerous threat to Lillibet, Ashton and the town of Jaguar Grove vow the warlock will not get his hands on Ashton’s witch mate and her magick for his own evil use. But Zagan is determined to enslave Lillibet and hold her prisoner in The Underneath, siphoning her powers for himself until every magical creature in existence—including Ashton Panthera—is a slave to him and his villainy.
Like all of Tiffany's books, this one has its center the love of a very masculine acting butch and a lovely femme. This is not a criticism. I'm very fond of this trope, and Tiffany writes it very well. The story is fascinating, incorporating more lore from a background that I am not familiar with, and it all ties in together well with the trademark HEA that most of Tiffany's books has. Definitely worth a read.
4 stars. This was pretty awesome. The plot was awesome and I LOVED the romance between Ashton and Lilli. Great spice, intriguing plot and world building and action. I was super into this and I wish it were a series. I want more.
Dark urban fantasy, but also brightly lit as soon as the Guardian shows up! I'm talking about extremely hot jaguar shapeshifters, vampires, witches and an intelligent author who always felt lonely and finds her home, although she has no idea what mystical power lies within her. One day she finds herself in Jaguar Grove in "The Manor" of her seemingly existing family that she knew nothing about. Growing up as an orphan, Lillibet Vaughan was always alone. She dreamed of her perfect partner in her fantasy books, which she writes successfully, but had not found at the age of forty. Until she meets Ashton Panthera, the mayor of Jaguar Grove and so much more than that for Lilli. I love the intense connection in shifter fantasy that the community has with each other and also that they always protect each other and are there for each other and I especially love the intense love when fated mates find each other! It’s a hot Butch/ Femme romance with enough spice of course ;) I love Ashton's big, strong presence. She’s really hot! Beautifully written and now in time for the upcoming Halloween season it is the perfect book to get started.
Get ready for the spooky season with this new release. You'll meet Lillibet, a simple human femme who smells like apple blossoms and lillies of the valley, or so she seems. Then there's Ashton, tall, native, masc of center butch Arborist and Mayor by day. But when the night falls, what does the darkness bring. Tiffany E. Taylor blends native culture, shifters, witches, vampires, and other creatures that go bump in the night (and day). I went through the gambit of emotions, suspense, happy, sad, joy. I laughed and I cried. This book is a "just one more chapter" read and before you know it, your done. I totally recommend this!
I was mostly disappointed. I am not sure why this book is considered dark. I found nothing where one of the two MC would consider the relationship as forced or only partly consensual. The Butch MC was almost soft in comparison other butch characters by Tiffany E. Taylor, but she was still introduced as the top.
On the plus side, I liked the Femme MC a lot. She's similar to Kelly Holland from Whimsical Princess, in a way, she is headstrong and not only sure of herself, but she is capable to execute her plans.
The story is almost simple and straightforward for a fantasy. I would have liked a few unexpected twists, maybe a betrayal to spice up the story.
“The Manor:” A Butch/Femme Dark Urban Fantasy Shifter novella
I wasn’t a fantasy fan but I am now! Tiffany E. Taylor has a way of making me read whatever she writes. And I am never disappointed!
Jaguar Grove is a magical place and I fell in love with Lillibet, Ashton and the other wonderful magical residents of the town. I truly enjoyed this wonderful book!
Great story. Great Characters. This story got you in her grip. You'll keep reading as fast as you could. You want to know what is at the end. Just super.
