Princess Abigone and the students from the secret schools for Masters and Makers are fleeing across the Central Provinces after the fall of Klef Mordain, concealing their identities as they edge ever closer to the borders of the Sanctian Empire. If caught, they will be executed by the Offices of Purgation, a Sanctian agency with one job – find and kill every Master and Maker in existence.
Enticed into the depths of the Great Forest, they are pulled into the realm of the renegade Whalebone King, a Master and former pirate who has given up life on the seas to rule over a silver mine with cruelty and barbarity.
Crossing their path on the way to answer a summons to Sanctos, Walter of Upper Down follows Abigone into the forest to rescue her, but finds himself battling not only the Whalebone King, but the inner demons that threaten to destroy him.

About Me
I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

There are certain things I expect from my favorite authors. First and foremost is a good story. Well, this author has outdone himself. Again! Although it's a bit brutal at times (okay, a lot brutal) Whalebone King is probably my favorite book in the Masters and Makers series so far.
The new characters introduced in this installment have amped up my excitement for things to come. The villainy characters kept me on the edge of my seat with their antics. And, I was happy that my original favorite character from book one returned. He's my favorite anti-hero. His involvement pulled the story together and moved the story along nicely. I hope to see more of him in future books.
It's fun anticipating what these characters will get up to next. With this author's wild and incredible imagination, anything is possible. Very well done, indeed!
Wow! I seriously don't know how Christopher does it with these books. This is the best book of the series so far. From the first page to the last page, it keeps you wanting more and after each chapter is finished you wonder if the next chapter will follow that character but nope you have to keep reading. Which is not a bad thing,
In this book we are introduced to some new characters and get to understand a bit more about the masters and the makers and the whalebone king who honestly is the worst, but I'll leave you to discover that for yourself.
Beautifully written and done in such a way that one of the characters you actually feel sorry for and are silently hoping that he'll redeem himself and another character that shell comes to terms with who she is.
We also say goodbye to some characters in a shocking twist.
All in all ten out of ten and I can't wait for the next one.
A former pirate who declares himself king in the middle of nowhere and wears a whalebone crown and is a master. He has mercenaries, slaves, and his four sons at his disposal and lives in a place that is very hard to reach but breathtaking. Add in abuse here, sadism there, and his former crew of pirates and all the mercenaries that have free reign to do as they please with the slaves. But this time the bargemen have gone too far in who they abducted along with the king has used his master powers to kill disobedient slaves in front of the bargemen. Now word has gotten to the Office of Purgation about a master they need to eliminate. There is also so much more going on in this story that I cannot even begin to describe all of it. This author has done it again and hooked me until the very end of the book and leaving me satisfied but wanting for more of the story. Highly Recommended.
Whalebone King, another brilliant book from a master author. The development of a number of characters is excellent, who knows what future lines they will follow, love, betrayals or anguish will no doubt be at the forefront of the next installment. Where does this series go now, can't wait for the follow up. Can it get better, of course it can knowing my favourite author there will be many twists and turns in future books as he likes to keep us all guessing.
Wow....Christopher Mitchell just gets better and better. The story arc is great and each new book is like a meeting between old friends, but don't get too attached to them all as they may not all survive the story, but that just adds to the excitement! Christopher has become one of my favourite authors.
What a wonderful book, Christopher seems to just get better and better! The next in the Masters and Makers series takes us deep into the forests to deal with a self proclaimed king. We follow on with the characters growing in confidence with their abilities, new strong Masters and Makers are introduced and it's a joy to see them evolve with new romances on the horizon. Unputdownable!!
Loved it from start to finish. If you already read Christopher’s books this one (book 3) just gets even better. Christopher’s usual wonderful writing style immerses you in an exciting unexpected adventure. Plenty of action and twists to keep you guessing. If you are new to Christopher’s books I highly recommend you find book 1 in any of his series
This was an Action filled escape from the Empire. However 4 of the little ones were kidnapped by bargemen,And Abigone and the other students need to head down river to confront the Whalebone "King" ? I am an Honest ARC reviewer who really likes this series, and The Author's writing.
Well once again Christopher has taken us on an amazing journey. This third book of the series was everything a high fantasy book should be.. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this series.
Abigone is now the head of the school that should prove interesting. I'm figuring that Saffie and Lothar will end up together or at least hoping they will.
