Travis Tufo - Red Sky ~ Joseph loved life, his farm and his wife. That is until he was torn away to fight in the war. His easy going attitude quickly died as he became a cold blooded killer for the Russian Army. His main objective remained of wanting to return to his simple life, but was this even possible?
Tony Baker - From The Ashes ~ Harold Lancaster, a retired cop, woke one morning to find himself in the middle of hell. He had seen many things over twenty-five years in law enforcement, but that experience had not prepared him for this insanity. In a coordinated worldwide attack, terrorists had unleased a mutated virus. This virus that did not kill outright, it did something far worse.
Eric A. Shelman - Dead Hunger ~ Something happened to the earth. Inexplicable. Not a product of man, but of nature.
Now Flex Sheridan and Gem Cardoza must do all they can to protect Flex's six-year-old neice Trina and find ways to survive a massive outbreak that has caused most of humankind to metamorphose into the walking dead.
Ian Woodhead - The Unwashed Dead ~ The few law-abiding citizens left alive in Breakspear Gardens have locked their doors and shut the curtains on this Friday night. They dare not venture out after the sun goes down. The druggies, drunks, and feral kids rule the streets in the roughest housing project in northern England - a place where anything can be had, at a low price - the neighborhood you never want to live in.
Tonight, the streets are strangely quiet. Headaches, nausea, and sickness are targeting criminals and residents alike. The untainted soon discover the horror of their plight, as their friends, families, and neighbors begin to die ... and are reborn as voracious, ravening beasts!
Robert Chazz Chute - This Plague Of Days ~ The war for the future has begun and the greater numbers are on the side of the infected. Terrorists created the plague and made ordinary civilians into rabid bio-weapons. The Ungrateful Living and the rabid cannibals all share one thing in they are just like you.
Mark Tufo - Zombie Fallout + Bonus Short Mayan Prophecy ~ It was a flu season like no other. With the H1N1 virus running rampant throughout the country, people lined up in droves to try and attain one of the coveted vaccines. What was not known was the effect this largely untested, rushed to market, inoculation was to have on the unsuspecting throngs.
Within days, feverish folk throughout the country convulsed, collapsed, and died, only to be reborn. With a taste for brains, blood, and bodies, these modern-day zombies scoured the lands for their next meal. Overnight the country became a killing ground for the hordes of zombies that ravaged the land.
Scott Nicholson/ J.T. Warren - Meat Camp ~ In a desperate attempt to save their land from tax foreclosure, Delphus Fraley and his daughter open a camp for at-risk kids, with the goal of building character through experience in the Appalachian Mountain outdoors.
But a strange infection contaminating the camp's mess hall soon triggers a violent rampage. As the isolated camp turns into a bloodbath, camp counselor Jenny Usher first fights to save the children, and then finds she must fight to save herself.
Because this infection doesn't just kill, it brings the dead back to life...
These anthologies can be very hit and miss but are usually 99p to try which makes it a risk worth taking for me to look at new authors. I have already reviewed a couple of these books so won't be reviewing them again and I have a copy of one waiting to be read on my tbr so will review it later.
1)Scott Nicholson-Meat Camp (0 stars) I have not enjoyed any of the books I've read by this author so I should have just skipped it as I thought this offering was really dreadful. Jenny the 22 year old virgin did not screw around at college like her friends which means she is obviously a freak and should be ridiculed through the book. Nice. Her 'understanding' boyfriend is a moron who keeps trying to seduce her. His method? Throw a condom at her and see if she says yes. We also have the cast of oversexed teens drinking and getting high, the billionaire property developer trying to evict decent people, the money grabbing woman determined to betray her family so that juvenile delinquents at her camp can keep annoying local people, and a complete slut of a woman is having sex all the time while planning a murder. By chapter 9 all we has was sex, moronic characters, more sex, talking about sex, thinking about sex, why Jenny was a nut for not having sex and something bad rustling the bushes from time to time. Boring and a waste of time.
2)Mark Tufo-Zombie Fallout-already reviewed
3)Robert Chazz Chute-This Plague of Days (1 star) I didn't like the way it was written. Vague descriptions, weird characters, lacking a good meaty plot to grab and grip the reader.
4)Ian Woodhead-The Unwashed Dead-already reviewed
5)Eric A Shelman-Dead Hunger I liked this one so I'm doing a full review seperate from this.
6)Tony Baker-Survivors of the Dead Have my own copy on ereader and will read and review it later.
7-Travis Tufo-Red Sky (unrated) When I realised what the story was about I knew it wasn't really my thing. I'm not greatly intrerested in reading about a guy in the Russian Army so I skipped on from this.
8-Armand Rosamilia-Dying Days(1 star) Started this one and didn't like it at all. The characters were horrific-I mean who cares about makeup in a zombie apocalypse or wants lip gloss as the dead are coming towards you? Can't be bothered with all the sex stuff either-don't find it realistic than when you're fighting for your life, you care about cute guys and makeup and who fancies you.
This anthology was more miss than hit but it was worth getting for Dead Hunger which I liked. It let me try a new author even though I didn't like the book. Worth the 99p certainly.
I have to say it's really hard to find a good boxset where ALL the stories are good. But, this is one of the exceptions. I mean, all of the stories were really good. Of course there are always stories that were exceptional and for me, starting with my absolute favorite are: Dead Hunger, From The Ashes, Zombie Fallout and Dying Days. As I said before, all stories were good, but the one's I mentioned were exceptional. Dead Hunger was #1 for me because it was just awesome and I found myself getting very attached to Flex, Gem, Hemp, Charlie and little Trina. There's actually a part near the end that made me tear up, now that's good writing! From the Ashes had me rooting for the good guys, love Harry, Derrick and Frank! They would definitely be the one's I'd follow in a Zombie crisis. Zombie Fallout and Dying Days were very fun to read, and had great characters and good humor. Overall this book is definitely highly recommended!
A truly amazing set of chilling stories at a great price. From Zombie fallout to From the Ashes. If you love horror stories i highly recommend you buy the Horror Within Boxed set.
This was really good! I'm not really into zombies, but this is such a good book with all the gore and suspense, but some good humor, too. I'm glad I read it!
