This is the first volume in the series that is a 3.5 for me and the .5 is because it started picking up in the latter half of the last chapter.

The pacing has gotten better, or I’ve simply become immune to it, but it’s still missing something for me. The characters are a bit milquetoast. Even Shiba, who we see is being set up to be the ‘all powerful mentor’ figure in these series. It’s not using its introduced characters well and when you do meet someone you want to be more invested in –poof– they go bye bye. This has been consistent since volume 1.

Due to my very average response to what I consider an average manga (I’ve read 4 volumes and I think that’s enough time to decide if it’s worth continuing or not), I decided to check some reviews to see what others were saying about it. Nearly every review spoke highly of this and, sure, they’re different strokes for different folks, but personally, this is simply an “ok” manga. Just ok. Average at best, truly.

I will read volume 5 because as mentioned, the latter final chapter of this volume made me want to see where it leads (and of course, because I bought it on Amazon). However, moving forward, this seems like a series I will be happy with getting spoilers for. Or if it gets an anime adaptation, I’d watch. As for biting the rest of the physical copies, I don’t see myself continuing to do that.

“I’m curious to see what’s grown… from the seeds of hatred I sowed all those years ago.”

teamwork and chosen families… doesn’t take much to please me. i have found a new favorite series. might even be top 5, dare i say top three 🫣. god, there are so many tragic stories in this, it’s TOO GOOD. this is like on the same level of Bleach for me. the complexity of the characters? family values? love? betrayal??

the art continues to be a slay, and although it’s quite simple, the mangaka draws eyes so beautifully. they convey so much emotion UGH

when i have money i will be collecting this series🙂‍↕️

“Die as mine at my side.”

Unironically, this is the best and coolest shonen running right now. The storytelling is on a completely different level than any of its contemporaries~

Why would I not love a magic heist!?! The Rakuzaichi arc is everything and I cannot get enough of this story. Yes, I teared up at Hakuri's flashbacks, thanks for asking. 😭 And yes, I'm kind of obsessed with this manga lol.

The cover is beautiful as always! 😍 Love seeing both of the boys together 🫶🏻

Dang, forgot how kinda-casually Yura first joins the fray. Mans is presumably the final boss of the manga, and he is first seen as a faceless mob guy from a distance as Hakuri runs toward Chihiro.

The Rakuzaichi Arc heads toward a climax as the volume ends with Chihiro starting the fight against Kyora. Soya and Tenri are defeated in pretty substantial fights, both of which add some decent lore to the manga: against Soya, Hakuri demonstrates the rare ability to wield two Sorceries, including access to the Storehouse; with Shiba and Chihiro fighting Tenri, we see use of Datenseki to augment spiritual ability and simulate the powers of an Enchanted Blade (see: Tenri's jellyfish Stand). Of minor note: I believe it was Kill Blue which debuted a jellyfish weapon around the same time in Jump, which was kinda fun, seeing two different manga with jellyfish powers.

Hokazono does this thing too often where he introduces a handful of mid-boss-type characters, only to have them job off-page. There are a few people hanging by the chandelier when Chihiro is using Cloud Gouger on some powerless goons, but Tafuku clears them all. We don't see Shiba beat Post Malone or the girl Tou.

Another issue with Hokazono, I think I might have mentioned this last volume: he introduces side characters without giving them names, and they gain fans in real life, and die in the story, nameless. The Ice Milf is a prime example. I believe I brought her up last volume when we saw a brief glimpse, and I think I also mentioned the Pine Tree Hishaku who is still presumably a major enemy and remains nameless as of Chapter 98 (he's still alive, though, I think).

Shouts out to VIZ for keeping the error with Tafuku having three eyebrows and two noses in that one panel.

Speaking of how much I hate VIZ, I CANNOT STAND the way they ruined the typesetting of the Isou clash by replacing Hokazono's text with this shitty font.

The action continues to ramp up nicely in this interesting manga. Fans of Bleach and other urban fantasies will likely enjoy this because it has the usual ramp ups and interesting side characters.

Chihiro must stop the auction that will sell the two enchanted blades. But in order to retrieve Enten, he must find where it is being stored. With the help of Hakuri and Togo, he has a chance to find his blade and stop the auction from putting powerful swords into the wrong hands.

We get a lot more information on Hakuri this volume as he does his power up to discover he isn't the weakling that his father and brothers believe. Using Hakuri's knowledge, Chihiro will have to defeat the Sazanami clan's elite and also confront the person responsible for his father's murder.

A lot happens in volume 4 and admittedly at times it can be VERY hard to follow. I do like that the plot jumps in time back and forth rather than following a more boring linear timeline. The side characters actually get more attention than Chihuro so now I am intrigued on where this will go once this arc is finished and if these characters will continue with Chihuro on his journey.

In all, enjoying this title very much. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Behold! The SPOILERS!

Well, this is getting interesting. This volume was actually really good and I like the direction in which the manga is heading. Sure, some parts can be fairly predictable but that’s not of significant importance.

The star of this volume is definitely Hakuri. I just love the story of this kid that was an outcast in his family because he seemed to be a weak sorcerer. No wonder he turned on them since they treated him so horribly. I loved the scene where he was bonding with that girl with icy skin. It was so wholesome but so heartbreaking at the same time. Also I kind of predicted the fact that he’ll have both powers but that’s kinda besides the point because he looks sick as fuck with that mask on.

Also a man that’s responsible for killing Chihiro’s father comes to the auction and I hate him. I hope he dies and Chihiro gets justice for his dad. Speaking of Chihiro, I loved his interaction with Hiyuki. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t even know that Hiyuki was a girl up until this volume so that’s my bad I guess. But also not really because how the hell am I supposed to tell that she’s female since she looks so ambiguous.

Well, anyway, it’s a good volume and now I’m actually excited for more. Good job Kagurabachi, you won me over again. I’m giving this 5 stars and I hope it keeps on going with this quality.

OH MY GOD, I JUST FINISHED KAGURABACHI VOLUME 4 AND IT IS OFFICIALLY A MASTERPIECE! 5 STARS because the Rakuza Ichi auction finale is absolute CINEMA, and the emotional payoff is just... wow! ⚔️🔥🏆 I was literally screaming at my book when Chihiro and Hakuri finally synced up—the teamwork is absolutely top-tier!

My boy Hakuri has been through enough guys, seeing him stand up to Soya and finally tap into his true potential had me sobbing! 😭💔 The way he reallocated his spirit energy to reclaim the "Storehouse" was such a flex—he’s not the family failure anymore, he's a legend! 🏯✨ And Chihiro? Using the broken Kuregumo to slice through enemies like a flash of light was 10/10 energy! ⚡️⚔️ The stakes have never been higher, and seeing them fight together to save the prisoners and reclaim the Shinuchi was pure hype!

It’s a perfect 5-star read because the art is peak grit and the character growth is actually immaculate! 🌟🎬 If you want to witness the most intense auction in manga history, run to VIZ Media or Amazon and get this volume immediately! PROCEED WITH THE AUCTION. PROTECT THE LEGACY. ✨⚔️🔥🏆🌑

I am liking where this is going, this arc is a lot of fun. While I do find that Chihiro as a main character is still somewhat bland, his design is super cool. And I do like his backstory so while not my favorite main character he is definitely passable. He just looks so scary at times it’s great. I like Hakuri a lot also. I was not expecting him to get a power up but I guess I should have seen it coming given the set to. I am not sure about Shiba yet, he is cool and mysterious and that’s the vibe they are going for, but I am ready for some more in depth character building with him. Overall great series so far.

This had me YELLING at multiple points. Chihiro is such a wonderful shonen protag. I also can't get over how much I'm enjoying the themes if this so far?? The way it tackles family is so much more nuanced than what I'm used to seeing from this genre. And watching Hikaru come into his own as he learns his worth away from his family's influence and gains mutual trust with Chihiro is so fun to watch. This story will almost certainly hurt me badly sometime in the future but for now I'm cheering and hollering. I can't wait to see where it goes from here! (let's go patricide!!!!)

From the beginning, I already thought that Cloud Gouger (Kuregumo) and Hakuri were not just any ordinary. And it turns out that throughout this story, Kuregumo, when brought by Chihiro, still shows his strength.
The most epic thing in my opinion when read this volume is about Hakuri's development, his past and how his strength is both touching and cool. When the excitement of fighting between Chihiro dan Hakuri's father is even more exciting, it continues. Oh, can't wait to read the next story!

Still don't understand what people are getting from this C-tier shonen manga. The characters are so passive and unremarkable. The action is spastic and confusingly drawn. And worst of all the world and power mechanics are elaborate but so poorly defined it's impossible to remember what anything means from chapter to chapter unless you're a diehard fan. I read a lot of manga and comics, including plenty of shonen action. The entire first four volumes of Kagurabachi just feel like a gray blob of nothing to me.
