I'm so glad I picked this book up from the library. It has been so fascinating!

The construction and order of the book is well thought out and makes logical progressions of themes - I like that the author progresses through the books in the order they were likely written instead of the publishing order. This really highlights Jane Austen's development in style, maturity, and (crucially) - the historic references at that time. It's completely changed how I will reread the novels and brought deeper understanding and meaning to them.

Πολλοί από εσάς έχετε διαβάσει τα έργα της Jane Austen (και αν με ακολουθείτε καιρό, ξέρετε ότι έχω και λίγα με αυτά). Έχετε σκεφτεί όμως πως μπορεί να μη τα διαβάζουμε σωστά;


Στο –ομολογουμενως διαφωτιστικό– έργο της, η Helena Kelly μας αναλύει, βιβλίο το βιβλίο, πως τα έργα της δημοφιλούς συγγραφέως δεν είναι τόσο ρομαντικά όσο τα θεωρούμε σήμερα, και πως οι χαρακτήρες της έχουν μια πιο περίπλοκη διάσταση.


Γελάτε όταν διαβάζετε την “Περηφάνια και Προκατάληψη” με την κυρία Μπένετ και την απελπισμένη προσπάθειά της να καλοπαντρέψει τις κόρες της. Έχετε σκεφτεί ότι αυτή είναι η έγνοια μιας μητέρας του 18ου αιώνα να σώσει τις κόρες (που ο κύριος Μπένετ, όσο γοητευτικός και αστείος και να μας φαίνεται) δε φρόντισε αρκετά για να έχουν τουλάχιστον αρκετή εκπαίδευση για μια δουλειά; Ειδικά αφού το κληρονομικό δίκαιο της εποχής δεν έδινε κανένα δικαίωμα στις κόρες του να έχουν δική τους περιουσία;


Βλέπετε (όπως κι εγώ δηλαδή) τον Έντουαρντ Φέραρς στη “Λογική και Ευαισθησία” ως ένα γλυκό άνθρωπο; Έχετε σκεφτεί πως η συμπεριφορά του προς την Έλινορ μπορούσε να είναι χειρότερη από του Γουίλομπι προς την Μαριάν, αφού από την αρχή ήξερε ότι την εξαπατά;


Σας εκνευρίζει κι εσάς το Μάνσφιλντ Παρκ και η ηλιθιότητα των χαρακτήρων; Ε, έχετε παρατηρήσει όμως ότι σε όλο το βιβλίο γίνεται λόγος για την αποικιοκρατία, μέσω του θείου της Φανι που έχει κτήσεις σε αποικίες και έτσι επιτρέπει στη συγγραφέα να θυμίσει στους αναγνώστες ότι η ζάχαρη που απολαμβάνουν κάθε μέρα είναι προϊόν δουλείας;


(Επιπλέον ως προς αυτό, για κόρη κληρικού, βλέπετε πως η συγγραφέας περιφρονεί τον κλήρο, κάνοντάς τους κληρικούς στα έργα της τελείως γελοίους;)


Σας διασκεδάζει το Αββαείο του Νορθανγκερ και η περίεργη πρωταγωνίστρια που προσπαθεί να ανακαλύψει μυστήρια εκεί που δεν υπάρχουν. Συνειδητοποιείτε ότι είναι ένα σχόλιο για την ελλιπή μόρφωση των γυναικών της εποχής, που όφειλαν μόνο να φαίνονται σοφιστικέ, όχι και να είναι;


Συγκινειστε με την Πειθώ και το “είμαι μίσος αγωνία, μισός ελπίδα” που γράφει ο αγαπημένος μας καπετάνιος (μη μου πείτε πως οχι, σας βλέπω). Αλλά σκέφτεστε πως όλο το βιβλίο είναι ένα σχόλιο για τους Ναπολεοντιους πολέμους και την τεταμένη κρίση που πέρασε η Αγγλία, ειδικά με το Ναυτικό της;



Σίγουρα δεν τα είχατε σκεφτεί, όπως ούτε κι εγώ τα είχα σκεφτεί. Το βιβλίο δεν έχει μεταφραστεί στα ελληνικά δυστυχώς.

Eye opening. I knew a lot of Georgian women had their characters, actions and writings modified, hidden or destroyed by their later Victorian (usually male) descendants so that they could appear to history as modest and appropriate but I had never considered this might have happened to Jane Austen.

Looking again at her novels in the context in which they were written, ie post French Revolution and in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, her and her characters lack of respect for the clergy, the aristocracy and the army is pretty shocking.

We always uphold Jane Austen as making timeless observations about people, and her well created characters are a delight. But I somehow never thought she had applied those observation skills to the wider Georgian society. And frankly found it lacking.

In many ways if this book is completely correct, it’s astonishing that any of her novels were published. Even decades after they were set. I suspect a lot of the lightness of touch of her writing hid the daggers quite effectively.

And then after her death her male relatives and biographers softened her into a romance author to both preserve her memory into the Victorian age, get her novels republished (keeping up their revenue streams) and to avoid being tarnished as relatives of a female radical socialist.

Probably also explains why Cassandra Austen so thoroughly burnt her sisters papers.

Thoroughly recommend this book if you want to know about Austen and have any interest in reading her novels as more than superficial romances.

Ce livre est un indispensable pour les lecteurs assidus, réguliers et admirateurs de la grande écrivaine Jane Austen.
Helena Kelly a le mérite de replacer Jane Austen dans son temps, son contexte politique, économique et religieux et nous explique de manière très simple mais extrême y riche et sourcée les messages passés par l’autrice dans chacun de ses romans publiés.
J’ai redécouvert mon autrice préférée et tous ses romans que j’ai envie de relire grâce à ce livre, n’ayez pas peur de vous lancer dans cette lecture, c’est une mane de connaissance sur l’époque de Jane et ses intentions !

Dit boek zet het werk van Austen in ander daglicht, het is vernieuwend onderzoek naar de historische context en de politieke en sociale ideeën van Austen. Heel interessant en je kijkt nooit meer hetzelfde naar de films;)

Thoughtful, compelling, with footnotes as interesting as the main body, I really just want to reread all of Aunt Jane's works because it really did drive the point of how fundamental it is for her works to find the right knowledgeable audience
