Jordan Peele reimagines the summer movie with Nope, an expansive pop epic of uncanny science fiction and complex social thriller that unpacks the seeds of violence, risk and opportunism that are inseparable from the romanticized history of the American West … and from show business itself.
Jordan Haworth Peele is an American actor, comedian, and filmmaker. He is best known for his film and television work in the comedy and horror genres. Peele started his career in sketch comedy before transitioning his career as a writer and director of psychological horror and satirical films.
Jordan Peele's take on/inversion of Close Encounters of the Third Kind was a fun watch. Shot well, cool soundtrack, well acted. Though I did take issue with seeing an old Obeah vinyl on screen. Forget the aliens, that was the most unlikely part of the film. Anyhow, the script doesn't add much to the conversation. There are no major changes from text to screen and unsurprisingly Peele writes a good scene. What would have been really interesting is seeing some of the early drafts and noting the changes. I thought some of the lingering questions in this film--like the strangely balanced shoe--worked better than some of what we were left with in his last film US. Maybe it's the story's construction or maybe just the current filmic obsession with expanded universes but one thing I keep thinking is that in some way at some point we will see a return to this world or property.
NOTE: I originally read this in January of 2023 but it was finally just added to Goodreads after a long disagreement with the GR librarians. I first read the screenplay at the link below: https://www.indiewire.com/features/ge...
