Time Is Eternity

Temporal Driftwood

Rate this book
David tried not to stare, but it wasn’t easy. Gorgeous Guy had a mop of dark hair, dark brown eyes that David knew he could stare into for eternity, an adorably dimpled chin, and just enough of a five o’clock shadow (it was just after noon) to give him that dangerous, bad boy look. This guy is totally out of your league, Lassen.

Then GG is gone, replaced by a little man with spectacles telling David he’s got one more opportunity to connect with the love of his life. The question is… will David take the chance?

As David trying to get over the fact that he blew up his chance to talk to the gorgeous stranger (whom David calls "Gorgeous Guy" in his mind), he is visited by another stranger, this time a bit crazy-probably, who calls himself Chance Murdoch, Temporal And Dimensional Matchmaker. Chance tells David that he has one more chance to ensure his happy ever after with GG, but he needs to come with Chance in about one hour. David doesn't believe this strange guy, of course, but then Chance shows him the possible futures ...

---

This has a "Ghost From Christmas Future" sense to it. I LOVE Stephen Osborne's writing. He has a witty and humorous tone to it. I enjoy reading David's imagination as he stares at Gorgeous Guy, daydreaming about what he could do to him

... David couldn’t understand the attraction to Mixed Martial Arts fights. Two guys get into a cage, wearing only board shorts and skimpy gloves and beat the snot out of each other. If David got GG into a cage, fighting wouldn’t be the first thing on his mind. Getting those board shorts off him would, though

I like him being a little unsure about himself because he thinks GG is out of his league and will never like a skinny, bespectacled nerd like him. It might takes this strange matchmaker to show him the way, but I'm sure it makes an impact on him. My only complaint is that the story stops just at that moment David decides to grab his possible happy-ever-after future. I want to know moooooreeeee *whines*

Loved it, the chance to see your two different possible futures depending on a decision you make today.
My only niggle, and despite Sims thinking its a prefect ending..I wanted a bit more, just a little bit, maybe that first conversation!

Future A or Future B? The question is as unusual as it is weird, and David has a very hard time even accepting he has that choice. It isn’t every day that we are presented with such clear alternatives. We are as likely to miss even seeing them as David is in this story. If it weren't for the weird old man who suddenly appears and makes David look at whole is and what he wants, David would end up with a very average life, and not as happy as he could be.

David has more self-esteem issues than he realizes. Even though he meets a man who looks perfect for him, he is too tongue-tied to make anything of the opportunity. He cannot even believe he has a chance, so he gives up before he really tries. I could have kicked him, but then, not everyone is gung-ho and a risk taker. I just found myself wishing that David was even a little more courageous than he started out to be.

This story is a wonderful illustration for "nothing ventured, nothing gained. Sometimes all it takes is one little step, one moment of courage and doing something you might not ordinarily do. With the help of Chance, the temporal and dimensional matchmaker, David grows just enough to take that very small first step. I loved the ending as well – nice and open, it left me to imagine my own version of David's future.

If you like stories that make you think about your ability to influence your fate, if you enjoy short snapshots of a character's life, and if you want a read that will leave you smiling, you should give this short story a try.

Okay, this was so cute. David, he’s just so unsure of himself, but VERY sure that he doesn’t have enough to offer someone like GG. So when the opportunity to speak to him arrives, David just lets it pass by. All through the story he keeps that attitude, even when he sees a future of what that attitude will get him (and even then, I laughed “He can’t hear you,” Chance said. “Can he feel it if I spit on him?”) He is given glimpses of his future by the Temporal and Dimensional Matchmaker, Chance, both if he takes a chance and talks to GG, and if he doesn’t. Chance also considers himself temporal driftwood, a leftover from a shuttle accident. While he can’t make huge differences because the outcome remains the same (sorry, Abraham Lincoln), he CAN help in the love department.

While we get to see “what might be”, the story ends and we don’t see what will be. It ends perfectly, in my opinion. I’d love to see more of Matt and David and find out what happens, but in my imagination, they are supremely happy. Very recommended.

The time traveling here is not explained in a satisfactory way, I do like something that make sense on that level and, sometimes, I prefer no explanation to a lame one. David has a chance too choose is future between happily ever after and desperation alley... Maybe if the characters were better developed I would have found this a little better. The only thing I really loved is that our hero is a sceptic.
