Midnight: A McKenna Chronicle

Rate this book
I fell willingly into his bed, stolen moments of passion so intense they blurred the lines of responsibility and reason. The passion we’ve unlocked could be the key to our salvation or the path to damnation. This is my story, my fall into love and fear that it could end in a heartbeat...

One destined meeting. It alters journalist, Charlise "Charlie" Carter’s course. When asked to work on a Republican candidate's campaign, she’s unprepared for the intense reaction she has toward the young, handsome presidential hopeful, Colin McKenna.

Unable to resist Charlie’s allure, McKenna succumbs to his desire and they find themselves exploring a passionate, physical relationship that is soon tested by not only their own secrets, but his political advisers.

Traveling the country in pursuit of the presidential nomination, his career aspirations and complications from the past collide with their desire to be together, threatening to tear them apart forever. Midnight tells a compelling story of burgeoning trust, intense passion and secrets that could cause it all to unravel in a heartbeat.

Midnight is an adult contemporary romance, due to strong language and sexual content this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Excerpt from Midnight
“So good. It’s too good . . .” he mumbles against my mouth. And it is. So intense and so good my toes curl as I wrap my legs around his backside. I’m close to overwhelmed, the feel of him buried in me, knowing I’m really here in this moment, and his voice whispering in my ear to hold on, don’t hold back, give me everything . . . I almost can’t hold on, falling deeply into every sensation and losing myself in them.

*Warning: This review contains some spoilers which are not hidden*

Charlise “Charlie” Carter is a freelance journalist looking for a new job when one seemingly falls in her lap. She is asked to chronicle the journey of Republican presidential hopeful Colin McKenna in his quest for the White House. However her instant attraction to the man—and his to her—could be a problem for his candidacy.

Colin tries to stay away from Charlie, but when he finally succumbs, he tells her he has no heart to give. He can only give her the physical aspects of a relationship. Charlie, even with her damaged past, decides to accept his offer and live day by day, knowing she wants more than he’s able to give.

The pair grow closer to each other over the course of the campaign, and Charlie reveals her past—that she was raped repeatedly at age fourteen and had an abortion. Colin, with his staunch pro-life candidacy, is surprisingly accepting of her revelation, moving the relationship forward and asking Charlie not to leave him.

Throughout their journey, the reader is given glimpses of Colin’s past. He had a wife and baby who died several years prior, and he also had a brief relationship with his wife’s sister after his wife’s death. The sister, Ella, makes life difficult for Charlie at every turn. There are also hints at a stalker following the campaign, but are they after Colin or Charlie?

I took notice of several issues with the plot of this story. First of all, Charlie is a twenty-nine-year-old woman who has not had any type of relationship, nor has she had any sexual experience since being raped fifteen years prior. Yet she has no problem falling into bed with a man who promises her nothing and tells her he doesn’t have a heart to give. I was not convinced that any amount of feelings on her part would overcome the way he treated her early on and allow her to set herself up for failure that way.

The relationship was also very cliché with her immediate attraction, electricity when they touched, and Charlie getting all hot and bothered at watching Colin eat. Charlie was also the damsel in distress a few times, with Colin coming to her rescue when he had no business being there. And the looks they supposedly gave each other in public should have been noticed by more than just Colin’s best friend.

The eroticism of the story was … too much. I’m all for a heated relationship, but I honestly skimmed through some of the steamy scenes because I was bored with them. I’m a firm believer that if the scene isn’t advancing the relationship, it shouldn’t be included. Once things got going between Charlie and Colin, it was like they never stopped.

The way the book ended was not my cup of tea. Certainly the author left the door open for the next book, but there were too many loose ends within this story. Not every story will be a happily ever after, or even a happily for now, but I expect the author to resolve the plot of the book. I wouldn’t even call this ending a cliffhanger because Charlie just leaves. Period. She walks out with a dead cell phone and no idea where she’s going. She acts like a bratty teenager rather than the mature woman she claims to be by not allowing Colin to say a word in his defense. The issues with the stalker and Ella Montgomery are not even addressed. It’s like the writer forgot about them.

Editing of this book was also an issue. There were quite a few grammatical mistakes and formatting issues. It wasn’t enough to make me put the book down, but enough to annoy me at every turn.

I wish I had better things to say about the sexy politician and his journalist, but at the end of the book I was left shaking my head and wondering what the point of it all was.

I Love this story.

‘Midnight’ is the debut novel for Author Elizabeth Miller, and I’ve got to hand it to her, she has done an amazing job with it.
At first I was a bit dubious about reading this. I am not at all in to politics, and don’t understand anything to with it. But, you soon forget that politics is involved at all.

The preface drags you in, and intrigues you. I became hooked and ended up staying up all night in order to finish it.

When Charlie Carter is offered a job to follow Republican candidate Colin McKenna to take charge of his social media campaign, Charlie is at first a bit apprehensive. She has little interest in politics and politicians in general, stating they “are pompous asses in three-piece very-expensive suits”, and knows very little of Colin himself.

From the very first time she claps eyes on him, she is shocked to find him so young, intense and downright HOT. There is an instant, electrifying pull towards him that, in all honestly terrifies her.

“I’m in a trance, a moth caught it a spider’s web without the ability to escape. He’s absolutely gorgeous”.

“By his mere presence, Colin McKenna commands attention and he definitely has mine, every nerve in my body is highly attuned to his proximity, shimmering, a spark waiting to ignite.”

Colin, having set his sight on the presidential campaign throws his all in to his career. That is until Charlie enters his life. He tries to keep her at arm’s length; to supress the intense pull he feels toward her. But it’s not long before he can no longer ignore it.

“You don’t know me. You have no idea how complicated I am, how complicated my life is,” he breaths into me, holding me firmly with his eyes while our bodies remain a hairsbreadth apart. “For some reason I can’t stay away from you. I’ve tried, Charlie, I have, but each time I see you I’m drawn back in even though I know I should stay away. You deserve more than me.”

“I can breathe when I’m with you, Charlie. My lungs haven’t felt this full in so long.”

Charlie and Colin find themselves exploring a very hot and passionate physical relationship, making sure to keep it well hidden. But that is soon tested by not only their own secrets and feeling, but outside parties as well.

They want to be together, but can his political aspirations and a complicated past prove to be too much for the newly formed couple?

“You are the only man I have ever wanted, Colin; the only man I will ever want.”

I loved it, I really, really loved it.

It had everything you could possibly want. Love, humour, a plot with lots of twists, and an intense, HOT passion. The characters…for the most part, were lovable and you could easily connect with them. The writing, I cannot fault in any way.

The sexual tensions and heat emanated off the pages and the sex scenes…..WOW. They were HOT!!! So, so HOT. You will need a cold shower. A lot.

You have me intrigued and excited Ms. Miller. I can see many more amazing books being released from you in the future, and I look forward to reading more.

This is just the beginning of Colin and Charlie’s story, and I cannot wait to see what’s to come next. There’s questions unanswered, secrets that need unveiling and fear still lurking in the background.

I thought Midnight (McKenna Chronicles #1) by Elizabeth Miller would be a sexy political romance between the hero, a Republican Senator running for President of the US, and a more liberal thinking journalist, who initially knocks heads with the Senator, but then falls for him in a blink of an eye. The first few chapters grab you. Colin is very engaging and appealing when he first appears on the page. Charlie is very spunky and speaks her mind. She doesn’t understand why she was chosen to follow Colin because she doesn’t have a background in politics. That’s one mystery that continues until the end. The problem is the insta-lust between the two is too fast and comes on too strong, which leads to eye rolling love scenes. Colin can’t have an emotional connection with Charlie because he believes he’s not a good person, and is still mourning his dead wife. But he doesn’t have a problem with connecting with her on a physical level when they start having sex. He begins to call her “baby”, and Charlie’s magic hoo-haa makes him feel reborn.

I wouldn’t have a problem with Colin and Charlie engaging in such an affair, but there’s no buildup. It happens so fast that it’s just not believable. Perhaps if these two spent more time together, leading up to his presidential nomination, then I could get behind it, but it fails because the sexual tension is not fleshed out enough. More than half of the story is Colin and Charlie in bed together. All the other characters are one-dimensional, including Colin’s sister-in-law who is just a witch for no real reason other than to cause tension. All political mentions or scenes were pushed to the side so Colin and Charlie could have one big boink fest. It appears the author did the very minimal research for the political atmosphere just to grab readers who may be okay with it under the “just because” reason. Their chemistry wasn’t enough to carry the plot. If Colin and Charlie went their separate ways, I would have been fine with it.

The ending is a cliffhanger. The reason Colin wanted Charlie on his campaign trail is something straight out of a soap opera, and not a good soap opera at that.

Midnight had a good sounding premise but fails in so many ways, especially on the delivery and purple prose love scenes that feel forced.

Favorite Quotes:

“Politics is not my strong suit; in fact, I hold a high level of disdain for it, and maybe more so for politicians. My simple philosophy categorizes the whole system just above the criminal clientele inhabiting the State penitentiary.”

“Damn heart. I need a new one; this one is defective. It keeps breaking into pieces each time I see him or hear his voice.”

“’Charlie,’ he breathes into the silence, my name a prayer on his lips.”

“We come from very different worlds. You’re Ivy League, and I’m bowling league.”

“I can feel the stirrings of a blush, but then give up on embarrassment because it’s Cosmo’s fault. That magazine could give ideas to the devil on how to be sinful.”

“I never in my life envisioned loving someone, and certainly never knew this is how love would feel.”

My Review:

I am amazed, astounded, incredulous, mystified, dumbfounded, and stupefied. How can this enthralling, captivating, and engrossing book be the author’s first? It is flawless, well plotted, beautifully crafted, and deliciously sensual. Other than a wicked cliffhanger and the broken heart it left me with, it is perfection. My saving grace is knowing I already have book 2 Midnight Sky on my kindle, otherwise, I would be totally devastated.

Holy Cow!!!

Wow this book is amazing.

Story is intriguing and captivating at the same time.

Colin McKenna is the H.O.T state senator going state to state gavering votes to be a president candidate.

Charlie Carter is hired as the social media coordinator for the campaign.

Both are damaged and are two broken halves but when they both fall into the sexual desire they have for one and another will the two halves become one?

Throughout the story your emotionally connected to the characters, learning about Charlie's background and then a little of Colin's.

You hope that they find one another and can be each other's HEA. Although as you read the last chapter of the book you get a real bad feeling about what's coming. Until bam the story ended on a cliffhanger.

I'm not a huge fan of cliffhangers but boy do I love them too. I so can't wait to find out what happens to both Charlie and Collin.

Who the stalker is? ( tho I think I have an idea)
What happens to Ella and her bitchyness

And finally will there be a HEA?

Congrats on a wonderful story I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading more of your work. :-)

Ever heard the saying 'Don't judge a book by its cover'? Yeah? Me too but I didn't judge the book by its cover I judged it by the blurb! Well in actual fact I signed up without reading the blurb and truthfully? Best thing I could have done!!! I bloody loved Colin & Charlie.

Charlie is independent journalist.
Colin is a senator running for presidency.
Colin wants Charlie to run his campaign, to be on his team.

Colin doesn't have a heart to give, Charlie doesn't ever think she will feel anything for a man. When these two come together the connection is astonishing, little does Charlie know, but it wasn't fate that brought these two together!

"I like to find broken things, discover their secrets and make them whloe, mend and repair until they're far better than before my interception."

Charlie has a troubled past.
Colin has a rocky one.
Together can they pull the best out of eachother and forget the past they both suffered & be happy together?

As I was reading Midnight I couldn't help but feel there was a lot more to Colin than he let on. The looks his family gave, the comments made. I just couldn't put my finger on what it was. This was a massive shock to me because I for one am normally quite good a pulling parts out of the book to find the hidden secret. Not this time that is for sure!! This book not only surprised me with the story line but also with the amount I liked this book. The characters they were so likeable. The storyline kept you pulled in that you didn't want to put it down.
Reviews are all about honestly and I have to be honest. The first two chapters I sturggled with. Like really struggled. I put the book down three times and was going to give up. I am not a political person in the slightest and that was the ONLY reason why I couldn't seem to get into it. I then gave myself a pep talk and told myself to man up and SERIOUSLY.... it turnt out to be a cracking story but I truly do rate as up there with a few of my favourites! If you are not a political person like me don't let the first few chapters put you off. Read on. Please.

Colin. You have this powerful man running for president who has the had his fair share of broken hearts and broken forevers. He has his peers, and his best friend Evan but other than that he actually has nobody! He is a loner surrounded by people essentially.
Charlie. She is a fiesty firecracker. She has a beliefs and her mind will not be changed on them. This is what I thought attracted Colin to Charlie.

Charlie & Colin finally give into the sexual tension between them & get down to it. Once they start there is no stopping them but what is that is holding Colin back from making Charlie his? They both have their fair share of secrets and trust issues but surely if they work together they can get past all of the insecurities they have.

This book shocked me, rock me and made me cry! I laughed until my jaw hurt at some points but I cried until I sobbed at the end. I wouldn't say it is a cliffhanger but I cant wait to get my hands on book 2 of Charlie & Colin's story! 5 stars from me for Elizabeth Miller on Midnight, which comes as a complete shock after I struggled in the beginning!!!

***I was given a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.***

What a great book by Elizabeth Miller. I was intrigued from the synopsis when I read it, and it didn’t disappoint me at all! Charlie has landed a dream job of following Republican senator Colin McKenna around the country chronicling his campaign bid for the U.S. Presidency. From their first meeting, sparks or should I say fireworks, fly. They try their best to stay away from each other, but they can’t fight it any longer and give into their feelings. Both try to keep it simple, but it soon becomes apparent that they can’t. To say the couple has many obstacles to overcome would be an understatement. His bid for the presidency and long-held secrets conspire to stop their chance at happily ever after.

Midnight was a perfect combination of hot sex, romance, and mystery. Charlie and Colin were fantastic together in and out of the bedroom. I like both of them; they were very multifaceted characters. The two should never be together because they come from very different backgrounds. She comes from a very traumatic childhood and grew up in foster homes until she finally found a family to love her. She is a survivor but never really has been able to live life to the fullest because of her past. She is beautiful even if she doesn’t realize it, and she is very intelligent and challenges Colin on every level. Colin is one hot, sexy senator…oh if only we had more of him in Washington. He seems to have it all together, but his past holds him back from having feelings for others, until Charlie. Their pasts really connected me to them. I felt every sadness they endured deep in my heart. She shows him what love really is which is astonishing knowing what her early childhood was like. I wasn’t sure how much political ideologies from both sides would come through in the book, but I didn’t really notice any which I liked. I don’t like a lot of fiction that pushes the political leanings of the writer in the book; I can read non-fiction for that. Miller does a good job of showing the reader what being in politics is like…having your life out of display and not having the privacy normal people take for granted. Even though they are on the road a great deal traveling for his campaign, the love between the two comes through on each page. I loved them together!

I thought this was a great debut novel! There is a cliffhanger at the end, but it doesn’t take away from the story. In fact, it sets the reader up nicely for the next book. I can’t wait to read that one and see what the fate of Charlie and Colin will be. However, I do have one wish…I hope Ella gets what’s coming to her! Thanks Elizabeth for an awesome read! Looking forward to seeing more from you soon!

I absolute LOVE this debut novel by Elizabeth Miller. This book had it all for me. It had love, intelligence, slight humor and hot sex. The writing was great too! The author took the time to give us amazing descriptions of the characters and the places they went. It made it easy to come apart of the story.
The Preface was WOW and drew me right into the story and I didn’t want to put it down. Charlie is a journalist with a secret she wants keep that way. Colin is a young presidential hopeful looking for someone to help connect him with voters using social media. Charlie joins Colin’s team and sparks fly.
Colin is the complete package. He is highly educated, down to earth, rich and hot. He also says the most amazing things to Charlie. I totally fell in love with him too.
“For some reason I can’t stay away from you. I’ve tried, Charlie. I have, but each time I see you I‘m drawn back in even though I know I should stay away. You deserve more than me.” ~Colin
“I will not lie to you, so believe me when I say this, I want you. I want to be with you. I want to touch you and feel you next to me. I want very badly to be inside you.” ~~ Colin
Charlie is a fierce woman. She is witty and smart. She has no idea how beautiful she is. She had an awful childhood before she was adopted by an amazing family. In this story, we see her struggle with her past and try to move forward and she does. She realizes her worth and it was lovely to watch.
Charlie and Colin together were the perfect couple. They really fit each other and I loved their connection. I can’t wait to read more of this series. Yes, this book ends in a bit of a cliffhanger but is totally worth it!
Pick up this book, fall in love with Charlie and Colin like I did.

I was gifted this book for an honest review by author Elizabeth Miller. This is book 1 of the McKenna Chronicles series by the author.

Colin McKenna is a powerful, self confident and commanding man who is in the political game with the presidential bid as the prize. He needs to connect with his constituents so he hires writer Charlie Carter. Charlie Carter had no idea when she said yes to Colin McKenna that it would involve more then just writing.

I have to say that I am not into political books but when I started reading this book the author pulled me into the story and it was hard to stop reading it. The characters and their interaction was great and the flow of the story line was better then I thought it would be.

This is definitely a hot read and it is for mature readers because of that. This is the authors first book and she is starting her career off with a book that I am sure will be in the top 10 one day.

I love this book!

I was immediately captured by Colin and Charlie's story. Their instant attraction was amazing. A presidential hopeful made for a very sexy leading man. Their passion was evident every time they were near each other. I can absolutely not wait for the next book. Great story and characters.

*Note - I downloaded this book for free and I thought I was reading it for the tour for the launch of book 2, but my reviewer Jenni is reading it! - that will teach me not to write who is reading what! So Here is my review for book 1 and you will find Jenni's review link at the bottom of my review.

I did enjoy the story, but I feel it could have been shorter, the author has probably wanted to pace the romance over the campaign, but it just seemed to be a lot of filler for me as the couple get together quite quickly.

I thought this was political romance between the hero, Senator Colin McKenna who is on the campaign trail for the presidential candidacy and Charlie a young journalist, who has no political affiliation, and has opposing views on the abortion issue. But she finds herself drawn to him, there electricity, sparks... He makes her feel... And after a rough teenage life she's surprised that she can feel this for him, but he's a hot alpha male, charming, sophisticated but he too is broken... A widow who lost his wife and child, although by the end of book 1 we really don't know much about the dead wife nor child.

This too had me going.. Oh come on! Ok you can have the integrity to stick to your promise of not researching the senator, but once you were sleeping with him? Come on I'd have been googling the dead wife like yesterday?? Also the insta love I had a few issues with, Charlie's history made me feel that she would have had a few more trust issues to have fallen so quickly into bed with him.

The book starts strongly, the first few chapters grabbed me straight away, I loved how Charlie would voice her opinions, and even stand up to Colin and the evil biatch sister-in-law. She's smart, has her own blog following and is looking for a way to make her career take that next step, but she soon forgets all that and is fixated on her feelings for Colin. There were too many sex scenes, and I can't believe I said that! But I was like please can we have something happen!

At around 3/4 in we start to see something is amiss on the campaign trail, But this stays unanswered until the end.

We also are left in the dark about why Colin continues to have the acerbic biatch of a sis in law around, just because she's his dead wife's sister and the daughter of his campaign supporter and main contributer just seemed against what Colin was saying to Charlie.

Unfortunately I found most of the other characters one-dimensional. The political side of the story petered out and the story is mostly based in the bedroom!

I didn't give in and skip them, because I am a dedicated reviewer and I don't do that, but in all honesty I personally would have preferred the author to have done more research on the political aspects, to have had more debate between the characters and to have had some major dialogue between Colin and his father in law, I mean there is obviously more to know, which the author is keeping to herself for book 2 but I would have been more engaged with the story if the author had laid the groundwork of the sub-characters rather than all the sex.

The ending is a cliffhanger.
After a complete turnaround of Colin's character that's left me wondering why on earth Colin felt the need to go through the elaborate subterfuge.

Personally for myself I was hoping for more than just sex with a backdrop of politics, Midnight started out strong, stalled, then started to redeem itself when Colin surprises Charlie at her parents, only to leap into the twilight zone of soap opera cliff hangers at the end.

My Reviewer has read these books for the tour for book 2 and she has said that book 2 does answer the questions, so I will probably continue with that book when I have time. here is Jenni's review

“You're in my blood, in the air I breathe, Charlie.”

★✩★✩★ 5- Secrets, Lies, and Passion -Stars ★✩★✩★

~this review may contain minor spoilers~

“If you agree to work with me, Charlie, I would like for you to enter into our agreement knowing little about me or my campaign. Base your perspective on what you learn firsthand. Can you promise me you'll forgo any research from this moment forward?”

Charlie Carter is a freelance reporter hired to work the campaign trail for presidential hopeful Colin McKenna. From the minute these two meet their attraction is clear to everyone around them, but they both fight it for very different reasons. Colin is on a path set out before him for years, his life has been organized and planned all with one goal in mind and the last thing he needs is a distraction. Charlie has a brutal history; one that has shaped the woman she is today, and one that could destroy all of Colin's hard work if linked with him. But their chemistry is hard to ignore, resulting in stolen moments of passion that ignite an affair neither were prepared for. The more they are together the more Charlie realizes she is not the only broken soul in their mix, the deeper she falls the more terrified she becomes of her past coming back to haunt her. But what happens when she realizes that someone else in their midst is harboring secrets far more damaging than hers, who will survive the fallout?

That's what scares me the most: the unknown. I revel in the odd magnetic pull, the exciting sexual attraction, and the ease and comfort simply there between us. It's all very exciting, but at the same time the path we're taking is blurred. How is it possible anything between us can end well

I love when an author is able to take me by surprise and Elizabeth Miller certainly does that, this book was nothing like I expected. Yes the sex was smokin', but beyond that the emotions this will drag out of you are heartbreaking. Charlie and Colin are two very broken individuals who have been through so much already in life, and are completely caught off guard by their reactions to one another. But they also help each other to heal and feel things in a way they never thought they would be able to again. It causes some panic and confusion that results in them occasionally lashing out and showing some very stubborn reactions to their situation. Colin was hott-as-hell and Charlie was way stronger than she gave herself credit for, all you wanted was for them to be able to finally find some happiness. What I wasn't expecting, was in no way prepared for, and a little miffed about, was the ending. It's no secret that I am not a fan of cliffhangers and this one really packs a punch~I did the scream/cry WTF over and over and over... Seriously dude, I will be climbing the walls waiting to see where this sadistic author takes us next. I would still highly recommended this book to anyone who likes their steam mixed with some tears, a whole lotta secrets and doesn't mind having their heart cut out by the end.

My existence seems very black-and-white prior to walking into the bright, effervescent world of Colin McKenna. My stomach heaves at the thought. He has indelibly changed my future; whether it's a positive or negative change is yet to be seen.

5 Slow and Sensual Stars

I was given this book for my honest review.

A Chinese puzzle box is a complex, complicated puzzle that we are willing to try at least once in our lives. Intricate moves in a sequence that must be completed in the exact order to get to the wonderment inside. As we move these pieces we can relate these moves to an outcome of success in our lives. Our first job, our first relationship, our first love, and the first time we took a leap of faith within ourselves. The wonderful feeling of excitement that we ourselves did the one thing that no one thought possible but we ourselves came out on top. Looking back with each intricate move within the box we ourselves came to create the moves within us to find the wonderment of us.

This is the 1st book in the McKenna Chronicles.

Charlise-sweet, pretty and unique

Colin-reserved, hunky and hot

To the author: This journey that you partake on is one of wonderment and amazeballs. You will have come to show your readers that life is an amazing astonishing, wonderful journey. In order for this reviewer not to give anything away in this review is to just do the thing I do best write this review to you. The journey that you have created within these pages comes with sorrow, happiness, unthinkable notions and a reserved calmness within.

You have shown with Colin that deep hidden secrets that he has within him is not all lost but also that when one thinks your recreating such a traumatic yet happiness event all may not be what it seems. That the heart is indeed in control if not only for a minute or maybe more? Your readers will me in amazement with Colin as I was I am sure.

With Charlise your readers will feel happiness and giddiness with a bit of an “Oh No” moment and will fall deep in awe with her. Charlise is a strong willed person with a trust issue that does not come easily but placing her trust in the one that gives her amazing orgasms may feel wrong to her but at the same time just right. Her struggle within herself is more than one thinks.

To the readers: Come be entranced as I was in the amazing read.

Happy Reading.

I absolutely loved Midnight by Elizabeth Miller. Go ahead and add to you "To Read" list because you don't want to miss this amazing love story of Colin and Charlie.

Colin McKenna is a young Senator from Indiana pursuing Republican nomination for the upcoming presidential election. Charlie's first encounter with Senator McKenna, she described him as "implausible dream...absolutely gorgeous. Tall and solidly built, confident and assured with a strong gait." He was elegant, perfect, captivating. He was Mr. McPerfect.

Charlise Carter aka Charlie is a young journalist asked to begin a social media campaign about Senator McKenna to boost the younger population ballots in the upcoming election. Charlie is young and driven, not to mention clumsy and modest. She has a natural beauty men are drawn to yet she is completely oblivious of her radiance. She has done an excellent job secluding herself from heartache for 15 years until Mr. McPerfect walks on the stage.

The two of them have a dark past driving their hesitancy to pursue one another. We learn of Charlie's horrific scandal but left questioning Colin's. You are given some suggestions of Colin's dark past but no specific details. It's a little frustrating but intriguing at the same time.

When they finally give into the passion, Colin keeps Charlie a secret for more reasons than one. Their secret romance is full of passion, sultriness, and desire. It was an excellent blend of story and erotica perfectly placed throughout the book.

Be prepared for a major cliffhanger at the end. I was left in disbelief, utterly shocked at the turn of events in the last chapter leading to book two which does not come out until 2015.

Midnight by Elizabeth Miller was an amazing, emotionally satisfying read. I enjoyed every minute glued to my Kindle, ignoring the world around me. I can not wait for book 2 and more works by Elizabeth Miller. Midnight by Elizabeth Miller gets 5 incredible stars!

Wow! I absolutely loved this book! Hot! Intense! Mysterious! Author Elizabeth Miller pulled out all the stops with her first Novel in the McKenna Cornicles. I am hooked and need my next dose of Charlie and Colin like a drug addict.

From the moment, I started reading this book I knew I would devour this book in no time! It pulls you in that very first page and has you needing more each page you turn. The mystery behind Colin and Charlie’s pasts drove me mad. I wanted to know what they were hiding. Yes, I had an idea but I wasn’t certain. And when we learn the secret behind their pasts… I will let you find out that on your own! No spoilers from me!

Let’s talk about Charlise Carter “Charlie” shall we, Charlie is full of life and curiosity. This girl is a girl’s girl and a guy’s girl. She doesn’t take crap from anyone and knows how to hold her own with just about anyone. She is absolutely breath taking even if she doesn’t see it a first. She is passionate about her writing and telling people’s stories behind the story. I absolutely loved her.

Then add Senator Colin McKenna into the mix and BAM! It was a reader’s heaven.. This man is powerful, demanding, possessive, and knows what he wants. He wants Charlie from the moment they met. He is good at hiding his feeling and past from her. It drove me mad when he would deflect her questions at first.

Colin knew Charlie was the prize and he went for it. I loved watching him fall for her even if he wouldn’t admit it. And this man’s dirty talking would make anyone squirm. His sweet sincere side he only let Charlie be privy too had me a swooning mess.

I did growl at the ending of this book!
Author Elizabeth Miller left us with a doozy at the end! Come on Spring 2015!!

Oh My God! This book! What a compelling debut! It’s left me on such a heartbreaking cliffhanger! I seriously need the sequel….like, now!!!

Charlie and Colin are two broken people, who have an instant, electric and undeniable connection.

Colin is a widower but he dislikes talking about his late wife – there’s a mystery here and a few questions that I need answers to! He is absolutely gorgeous, minted and charismatic - running for president and is absolutely drawn to Charlie (even though he tries to keep away from her). He can’t help himself, even though he insists he’s complicated and he has no heart to give.

Charlie is bewildered by her instant connection to Colin. She is inexperienced in love, wary of men and has secrets of her own. She accepts the opportunity to blog and run his social media sites during his tour of the US for his campaign, and things start evolving quickly between them.

The sex in this novel is plentiful, sensual and erotic. The dialogue in places is beautiful and heartfelt (*sigh*) - full of real need and desire from both Colin and Charlie. They are addicted to one another. She is his breath. She makes him feel alive.

The story moves along very well and, as I’ve mentioned, there’s a bit of a mystery to be solved surrounding Colin and his late wife. I have my suspicions and can’t wait to read the follow-up novel. There are good friends and family featured in the story, as well as enemies.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel – it took me through a range of emotions and an unexpected, shocking reveal near the end. Yeah, seriously need book two, now!

Wow this book is amazing.

Story is intriguing and captivating at the same time.

Ms. Miller brings us a wonderful story about Charlise (Charlie) Carter and Sentator Colin McKenna.

Colin is stomping the country attempting to get votes to become the Republican Candidate for President. Charlie is hired for his campaign staff as a social media coordinator. Both have something sordid in their past and are a bit broken. But, magnetism for each other is breathtaking, both for them and for the reader!

Charlie's past is heartbreaking at best and to see her grow is wonderful. Colin's past is still mostly a secret. Then throw some stalker action in and the story is fully rounded. I found all the characters in the book well developed and the ones you hate you will hate with a passion and the ones you love you will cheer for and hope they find forever.

I will say, it is a cliffhanger but well worth the read. Will Charlie and Colin have HEA? (God I hope so!), who is the stalker? Is it someone from Colin's past or from Charlie's! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I will be on pins and needles till the next installment!

I recommend this book to anyone who like hot men, strong women, a lot of romance, and a bit of a mystery!

Journalist Charlise "Charlie" Carter is asked to work on a Republican candidate's social media campaign for the upcoming presidential election. With little interest in politics, Charlie isn't familiar with the candidate and is shocked to find he's young, intense and sexy. From their first encounter she's unprepared for the intense physical reaction she has toward the presidential hopeful, thirty-six year old Colin McKenna.

Prioritizing his career, Colin suppresses his desire for Charlie until he can no longer ignore the deep connection he feels toward her. The two find themselves exploring a passionate physical relationship that is soon tested by not only their own secrets, but his political advisers.

Traveling the country in pursuit of the presidential nomination, his political aspirations and complications from the past collide with their desire to be together.

Steamy, hot, sex scenes, interesting, lovable characters and secrets draw you in and keep you enthralled through the entire novel. Erotic and romantic, Midnight is a love story that will leave you wanting more.

Intriguing is the word for this book. I was sucked in immediately by the circumstances surrounding these characters. When journalist Charlise Carter (Charlie), who knows nothing of politics, besides she doesn't trust politicians is asked to travel on the campaign trail with HOT Republican Presidential nominee, Colin McKenna, I expected a steamy, secretive love affair but there's is so much more that kept me reading. The mystery that surrounds these two, their pasts coming into play gives this story depth that is lacking in other romances. Rarely have I read a book so beautifully written, the story is detailed and plants you in the middle of the desperate longing, the questions... every emotion, you feel as the story unfolds. And the end!!! I won't spoil it but it was my favorite chapter. It really tied everything together, anything that I questioned was answered, everything clicked in a devastating way. I am ready for a book 2, full of angst and possible redemption, please!!

FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!
I bought the Pulse Point collection thinking they were all stand alone novels (and mostly because there was a series I'm interested in by one of the other authors and it was a good deal) Anyway, so Extremely glad I did or I may not have found this wonderful, exciting, captivating, intriguing and totally SEXY book. I could not put it down. The characters are interesting, the plot twisting and the writing is FANTASTIC...puts me right there, I picture entire scenes in my minds eye. I really love a good book and I cannot wait for the rest of their story...SERIOUSLY...CANNOT WAIT! Please release it SOON!
Definite MUST READ for all you romance fans!

Wow. I am amazed that this was a debut book!!! I have no words to describe how much I liked this.
It had everything. Passion, twists...everything.
The two protagonists...Ahhh! Charlie & Colin are amazing. The journalist and the handsome senator. The writing style was very eloquent, the development gradual but fantastic! This book was a real page turner. Just read it!
I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book!

5 Stars from me.

I loved this book. The characters are rich and complex. The emotional tone of the book connects you to each character. And let's face it- Colin is sexy. He sucks you into his emotional turmoil and you love watching him thaw. Charlie is feisty yet vulnerable. She makes mistakes but puts herself on the line for love. There are secondary characters you want to know more about (specifically Evan) and seceral mysteries you want the answers to. I read it in one sitting!! Highly recommend and can't wait for the sequel!

There's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by a Republican Senator called Colin. That's enough for the one star rating in and of itself but I'll elaborate.

There's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by a man who does not believe there is any justifiable reason for having an abortion. I'm pro choice but most people who are pro life could think of at least one or two reasons. Rape? Incest? Anencephaly? To save the woman's life? He can't think of any. In fact, later in the book, the heroine was another reason he failed to come up with. And, worse, he doesn't change his mind based on this experience.

There's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by a man who thinks he's a suitable candidate for Presidency and yet doesn't even know 1) that the pill doesn't protect against STIs and 2) his own trouser size, given how frequently said garment almost fails to contain his thighs.

There's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by a man who thinks nothing of jetting about in a private plane, flagrantly damaging our planet without concern.

There's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by a man who is often inconsistent in his responses, nodding whilst responding to the negative or who makes ridiculous statements like "Your body is a tantalizing plain of dips and valleys, tormenting even the saintliest of men." 1) plain is used to refer to FLAT land 2) a LARGE area of flat land 3) dips and valleys would seem to suggest her body is entirely concave, although to be fair, he is talking about a woman who describes her "flat but healthy stomach" as disheartening. So… he’s describing her as large and concave but flat. How complimentary.

There's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by a man who is aroused, has an orgasm and goes on his way in less than five minutes, though the heroine seems to think this is worthy of applause. *cough*nostamina*cough*

There's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by a man who sees no irony in being a professional orator but never communicating in private.

There's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by messy, inconsistent or redundant writing. Take a simple description of a blouse: “(it) looks like a collared halter from the front, the back mimicking the same neckline”. All those words, just to impart that it’s a halter neck.

But most of all, there's no part of me that is capable of being turned on by a story that trivialises rape. The heroine repeatedly tells us that losing the hero would be worse than … that counselling helped her get past this experience but that no counselling would get her through them splitting up. The threat of gang rape is used as a catalyst to speed up relationship progression. This pisses me off.

Oh and there’s no resolution whatsoever. UGH. No parts whatsoever being turned on here.

Cliff hanger

This book was similar to several that I have read. Like Silvia Day books and it ended the same way. Underprivileged girl meets wealthy man. They fall in love. She discovered something that makes her think he's using her and she takes off in a strange place with no resources. The end. Please get more creative.

There were some things I could like about this book, but too many I could not. First of all, I really have a problem when a book is poorly edited. Some of the problems were subtle, but very irritating. The use of the incorrect homonyms was very glaring - stealing/steeling, bearing/baring, and so on. Then, it began to seem as if the story was simply a device to move from one graphic sex scene to another. In one very short span, they had sex, there was a paragraph or two of transition, they had sex again, another short transition, then sex again. It kept feeling like the author was padding just to hit the prerequisite number of words to make a book. Which brings me to the last problem. I really dislike a book that stops with no conclusion to the characters' story. While I would somewhat like to know how it ends up for Charlie and Colin, I will never know because I won't bother to read the next installment. Hopefully, the next book will be better edited, though.
