Experience the vampire world for the holidays through the eyes of Gigi Scanlon in this e-novella prequel to The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire from beloved paranormal romance author Molly Harper!
College co-ed Gigi is headed home to Half-Moon Hollow for her first Christmas since her sister, Iris, was turned into a vampire by her beloved undead husband, Cal. Iris is working overtime to make this holiday as normal and special as possible. After all, it’s taken her months of working with Jane Jameson and the Hollow’s vampires to convince herself that she won’t bite her baby sister on sight.
Gigi has her own worries. She’s falling out of love with her high school sweetheart, Ben, and has no idea how to tell him. She’s got a secret job interview with terrifying teen Council official, Ophelia Lambert. And there’s a handsome but cagey vampire following her around town and then disappearing before Gigi can confirm that he’s not, in fact, a figment of her fertile imagination. Holidays with family are complicated. Christmas with an undead family can be downright dangerous.
Molly Harper is the author of more than 40 romance titles including the Half-Moon Hollow series, the Mystic Bayou, the Starfall Point series, and her first murder mystery, A PROPOSAL TO DIE FOR. She lives in Michigan with her family. For more information, go to www.mollyharper.com.
What a pleasant surprise this holiday novella was! I’ve never read anything by Molly Harper before this, but I just added pretty much all of her books to my TBR list, especially ones from this series.
This book follows a human named Gigi who has a vampire for a sister, and a slue of vampire and werewolf friends. There are also a few humans thrown into the mix. It makes for a very interesting holiday. Being in Gigi’s head was just laugh out loud funny. I adored her. This was such an easy listen, and even though I was a little lost at first (seeing as I’ve not read the other books in this series), I was able to catch up very quickly.
This was an audible freebie and one of my friends on goodreads (Thanks, Rachel!) recommended I pick it up. I’m so happy I did. It was light, hilarious and so fun. I had a permanent smile on my face while listening. When I have some spare time, I’m going to jump in and devour the rest of these books. I love the writing style, the humor, and the characters are fantastic.
I’m Dreaming of an Undead Christmas is #2.7 in the Sleepy Hollow series by Molly Harper. I need to admit here that I have not read the previous books in this series. I am a HUGE Molly Harper fan so when I saw this book offered on NetGalley I jumped at the chance to read it. It didn’t take me long at all to piece together the details of the previous books. I do plan, though, to go back and read the them because now I will also need to see what happens next!
Iris Scanlon is a vampire now and is married to her sweetheart, Cal. It is almost Christmas and it will be the first time her baby sister has been home since she was changed and she is a nervous wreck. Not only is she afraid she might be tempted to drink her own sister’s blood, she is obsessed with making this the best Christmas ever. Complete with Martha Stewart decorations and food for the human guests but also Christmas lights outside that could compete with Chevy Chase’s house in The Christmas Vacation and most certainly must be able to be seen from outer space.
Gladiola Grace Scanlon or Gigi as they all call her, is so glad to be home. But her sister’s obsessive Christmas spirit is making her crazy. It’s not like Gigi doesn’t have enough on her mind already. Her relationship with her long time boyfriend, Ben, has been falling apart for months now. There is just something missing and it doesn’t feel right anymore. But is Christmas the right time to break up with him? Then there is her job interview with the scariest vampire she knows, Ophelia. What will her sister say when she finds out? On top of all of that, there has been a super sexy but elusive vampire lurking in the shadows every time she turns around. Who is he and what does he want?
This was a super fun and very different sort of Christmas story. I loved how everyone, human, vampire and even some werewolves thrown in, came together as a family to celebrate Christmas. They made it work, even with Gigi’s lack of cooking skills and the differences in dietary needs, they all came together to make the holiday special.
This book left me wanting to get to know these characters better and to find out who that was that was following Gigi around. And I need to find out what happens when she starts her new job. So if you love vampires and you love Christmas, what could be better than to put them together?!
This book also comes complete with some recipes included at the end.
Thank you to Molly Harper, Pocket Star and to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I loved it.
This really seemed like it was more for fans of the series. I didn't dislike it but I didn't really gain anything from it. There were a lot of characters and not a whole lot of plot. I am sure that I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I knew anything about these characters.
Gigi is coming home for Christmas, first time since Iris has turned, and Iris is fretting over making it normal for her.
Gigi is home from college and her life is on the cusp of change. First, Ophelia wants to hire her for the counsel (vampires) but once you start working for them you can’t quit. Big decision there. Also, Gigi is thinking about ending things with her longtime high school boyfriend, Ben, but she can’t bring herself to do it. They have a close relationship but it feels more like friendship variety. Still, she’s worried about letting a good thing go. Adding to the confusion is a handsome mystery vampire who starts showing up wherever Gigi goes.
With mishaps a plenty and Molly Harper’s trademark snarky humor, this holiday anything but dull. But the story felt more like a lead in or setup for the next book, featuring Gigi’s romance, than a strong, stand-alone holiday story. I am intrigued by this mysterious vampire showing up and planting lusty kisses on Gigi, ones that stir up far more desire than Ben’s ever did. A copy was kindly provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second half-book I've read in the Half-Moon Hollow series (and oddly, they were both #'s 2.5... Not sure how THAT works, but, whatever). I haven't read any of the actual series though.
The first one I'd read was Undead Sublet, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I thought that the characters had interesting personalities and chemistry, and the story was fun and quite humorous.
This one... well, it did not come even close to being as enjoyable. There were some funny parts which had me laughing out loud, but aside from those, I wouldn't really have much to recommend about this story.
For starters, there wasn't REALLY a story at all. It felt like a between-the-series-books story, whereas Undead Sublet felt like a short story that was able to stand alone. I wasn't left wondering about major story points after finishing Undead Sublet, but I definitely was left with unanswered questions now. (These will seemingly be answered in the next book, but... *shrug* I'm not all that into PNR to seek it out. I picked up both of these little stories because they were free on Audible and short. That the first one ended up being enjoyable was a pleasant surprise.)
Secondly, I was bothered by how many decisions are made for Gigi in this short story, and by how protective her family is over her. They treat her like an incompetent child rather than a 20-something woman, home from college, and successful enough in her field to receive a very lucrative job offer. Her sister's husband apparently believes that he's married into the role of Gigi's father, and he doesn't even trust her enough to allow her access to open the window blinds, or even turn on lights. Yeah, they are vampires and sunlight will kill them, but honestly I found that insulting to a ridiculous degree. If the vamps are sleeping in their sun-protected bedroom, is Gigi just supposed to sit in darkness until they deign to allow it? Apparently so.
In addition to controlling her access to light, brother-in-law/dad is trying to pressure her into major life-decisions... like becoming a vampire. He doesn't think that she should be working with vampires if she's a fragile human, so he makes her take defense lessons and likes to startle her with "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" type lessons about how easy it would be for her to be caught unaware.
The lucrative job offer that she gets is from a local vampire commission, who wants her to do work tracking down descendants of vampires. This will mean that she will have access to very sensitive information about vampires, and thus that it's not a job that she can just quit if Microsoft makes her an offer. It's a commitment. She does decide to interview for the job (despite sister and dad/bro-in-law's insistence that she doesn't), and she gets the job. Only, it's assumed that if they offer it, she's got to take it. Which also annoyed me.
The woman who did the interview is a huge, manipulative, insecure bitch of a vampire, and would be Gigi's boss. Who in their right mind would want to work in that kind of situation - even if the footing was equal - meaning that they were both human. I certainly wouldn't. I was actually hoping that Gigi would have some sense and tell her to stick the job - that she'd just wanted to prove that she COULD get it, but didn't actually want it. But no. *sigh*
And then there's the romance stuff. She breaks up with her boyfriend in the middle of his semi-proposal of marriage because she just isn't feeling it for him anymore. And then he is all like "Oh, yeah, me too." Umm... what? That was ridiculous. I've NEVER met a guy who lost interest in a girl, a guy who admittedly would rather eat frozen pizza and play X-Box than hang out with her, who then thought that it was a brilliant plan to propose to her. Even our main character recognizes that this is the stupidest thing ever... but apparently since he's "a great guy" she accepts it. Apparently being "a great guy" means that he'd throw his life away married to someone he doesn't love because that's easier than admitting that the love is gone.
I don't get it.
So then there's the whole "mystery" aspect - where there's a prophecy that Gigi will be attacked by a vampire at some point ever (really, what was the point in even telling her? She hangs out in a vampire community and has taken a job looking up vampire info to find their relatives... there's a really good chance that someone might get offended about that)... and then some random blond vampire kisses her. No idea who or why. But it happened.
And that's it.
And I'm left very frustrated by there not being any point to this story at all, and wanting to tell Gigi to grow a backbone with her family, brotherdad-in-law in particular.
Anyway... I'm sure that the proper series books are better than this one, so don't let my review turn you off of the series. I just didn't like this bit. I'd suggest giving Undead Sublet a try if you're curious about the series but don't want to commit a lot of time to seeing if you'd like it - it's a much better story, I think.
This was a fun Christmas novella with the undead residences of "Half-Moon Hallow Series. Gigi Scanlon comes home to Half Moon Hollow after being away for 3 yrs at college, Iris now a vampire want's everything perfect for Gigi's homecomeing and Christmas so she sets out to have a "old fashioned traditional family Christmas" with a little help from her HMH friends.
I think this is setting us up for HMH book #3 since a new vampire was simi-introduced and has been watching GiGi from afar. Looking forward to see where Molly Harper takes us next!! This would have been a five star read if not for the seemingly abrupt ending.
Nothing screams Christmas like vampires!! Well...maybe not...but just because you're undead doesn't mean you've lost that holiday spirit. Having the Half-Moon Hollow gang together for some Christmas cheer was a blast. I love them all, but Dick Cheney is fast becoming my favorite character in this series. His gift to Jane was hysterical!
Not a whole heck of a lot of story, but I don't think that was the point, just some fun stuff from Molly Harper for fans of the series by way of this audio freebie. Of course the amazing narration by Amanda Ronconi made it even better. The book also serves as a segue to the next installment, which looks to be Gigi's book.
Thanks to Molly Harper and Amanda Ronconi for this wonderful gift!
So it was fun to see all the characters "living" (or not living) in Half Moon Hollow. I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas is a character reunion of all the characters from the Jane Jamison series by Molly Harper and the Half Moon Hollow series. Many authors do holiday reunion books, most are fun and almost all do not add any substance to the series. I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas is no different in those respects, but the author and publisher have made the audio book version is free on audible.com. This is a very nice gift.
I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas is fun, it is sweet and worth listening to. Oh! And at the end of the book Molly Harper includes some family southern style holiday recipes (almost every item with bacon).
this is Novella was both Gigi's story and a Christmas in the Half-Moon Hollows story. It's been 3 years since she went off to college. She is still dating Ben, although they've hit a rut, and she is coming home from the first time since Iris followed through on her promise to Cal. Both sisters are a little nervous, but it is obvious these sisters missed each other.
I loved this story. I love how Cal has really taken to his role as "man in the house" with gusto. Iris and Cal are still going strong, the whole gang, Orphelia, Jane etc make appearances in this Christmas edition.
Expect the same quirky narration by Amanda Roncini, expect the same kind of humorous story and expect the same kind of light-hearted, fluffy, yet entertaining story as the previous two stories.
I docked this story from a 4-star because of the very slight cliff-hanger.
Cute short Christmas tale with recipes for a happy undead holiday meal with your living friends. This was my first taste of this series and it left me hanging and really wanting to know who the blond mystery man was. I really liked the humor and romance the way it was written. I am on my way to know more about Gigi and her blond romeo in the next book.
This was a very enjoyable story. It's not a full story but more of a holiday short that lets us Molly Harper fans see our favorite characters for Christmas and get some of Gigi's story.
This story is told from the PoV of Gigi, Iris' (from The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires) younger sister who has been away at college. Iris turned vampire while Gigi was away (a planned turning) but has been very nervous of attacking her and so Gigi hasn't been home in months, finally getting to come home for the Christmas holidays.
The story basically entails Gigi and Iris reconnecting and finding themselves again as sisters now that many things have changed. Meanwhile, Gigi is interviewing for a job with the Vampire Counsel (which none of her family is happy about) and she has to handle her declining relationship with her high school sweetheart, Ben. Not to mention she believes she's being followed by a vampire that can disappear in to thin air...either that or she's going nuts. It gives an interesting glimpse in to Gigi's head and also we get to see all our Half-Moon Hollow favorites for the holiday.
The story does leave off with some unanswered questions about things coming up in Gigi's life that gives a good indication that she'll probably get her own book soon. I got this in audio format for free from Audible and it was a humorous holiday story, everything we'd expect from Molly Harper. Amanda Ronconi did a great job on the narration as usual. I'd recommend it but it's probably best for people that have some familiarity with Molly Harper's book set in Half-Moom Hollow. :D
3/24/15 - reread before starting The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire.
10/20/15 - Another reread and it's still a very good story. I really liked the Half Moon Hollow Christmas hijinx. :D
I am always happy to take a trip to Half Moon Hollow and get a chance to visit with my favorite vampires. Amanda Ronconi does a fabulous job of bringing the denizens of this small southern city to life whether they be male or female. The story is always good and entertaining so that you can find something interesting even in such a short story as this. These are not all characters that I know very well because they are from another set of novels but Jane and friends are present since it is set in the same town.
Gigi Scanlon is coming home from college for the holidays for the first time since her older sister has been turned. Her sister Iris is afraid that she will not be able to control her blood-lust and so has as many vampires as possible on hand. Jane along with her husband Gabriel as well as Dick Cheney and Andrea are on hand for the festivities that Iris has planned to make her sisters Christmas as human friendly as possible.
But Gigi has a lot on her mind because she has been offered a job by the vampire council, she wants to break up with her safe boyfriend, and it seems she is being followed by a very handsome vampire. Any of these things could be a problem but having to tell her sister and over protective father figure is not something she wants to deal with. But the season has a way of making things go better.
As usual a fun read that had me laughing out loud at the antics of these characters. Make sure to hit the last chapter because you will find recipes for some sweet treats of the season. Highly recommend!
Gigi was the story’s focus. However many other characters were involved in the Christmas festivities.
The Story:
So this is the backstory of Gigi, one of the Half-Moon Hollow residents. I’m new to the Hollow and it was ill advised to listen to book 2.7 first because obviously there were many references to things that have already happened and I knew nothing of any of the cast however I needed something to listen to while baking. I seem to be more productive that way. Anyhoo, I’m hooked I want to find out who this mysterious man was following Gigi. I was actually looking for book 3 to download last night but alas my library doesn’t carry it. *insert several sad face emoji here*
Ahhh Molly Harper. She's always good for a laugh and a giggle.
I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas definitely hit that mark. I did this one on audio.
The Story:
The quick of it is that Gigi is in college and going home for Christmas. No biggie. Other than the fact her sister is now a vampire and it's the first time they've seen each other since the transition. Eeps! It was cute. Her sister's panic and wanting to keep all their traditions alive even though she was a vamp now and some of them were difficult because of it. There's some silly thrown in with their wacky group of paranormal friends. And lots of Christmas spirit. There's no romance but hints of one in the future. You can do this one fairly easy as a standalone.
The Narration:
This was, I think, my first time listening to Amanda Ronconi. It was a mixed experience. Her voice was rather abrasive and nasal for the main storyteller (Gigi) and that took some getting used to. But she also had nice pacing and it was very easy to tell the different characters apart which I seriously appreciate. She hit the humorous parts just right and the serious ones as well. I took me a bit to warm up to her narration but I liked it overall and would definitely listen to another.
I picked up this audiobook as a freebie. This is a short story or novella length. I listened to it while cutting the grass. Both the narrator and the author did an awesome job. I have always been curious about this series, but I hadn’t explored yet. This was a great way to check out the author and the narrator. I will definitely be checking out more of both of their works.
This is Gigi’s reunion with her sister for the first time after her sister becomes a vampire. I really like Gigi and all of the characters I was introduced to. I love the author’s style and humor that was mixed in with a great story. I tried to see if the local used bookstore had some of the books, but unfortunately they didn’t. So I will have to check out the prices and see what I can get where :)
I highly recommend reading or listening to this story to all the vampire lovers out there who love their vamps to have personality with lots of fun and humor mixed in :)
It's kind of hard to know where to put this audiobook. It's a Christmas present from Molly Harper to her fans and is a bit like A Muppet Family Christmas. It really is just a parade of characters from the Half Moon Hollow universe.
For what it is it works very well. It's a cute and free novella, in which the fans get to catch up with their favourite characters and get a little intro into what will presumably be the next story in the series. If I was just rating this book on its merits, I'd probably go with 3 Stars. But I'm going to bump it up to 4 Stars because MH is giving it away for free. Yes there's a bit of that warm gooey glow you get when someone says something nice to you and I guess that's about where this book fits.
I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas was a great read following Gigi during her first Christmas home after her sister Iris was turned into a vampire.
Gigi Scanlon hasn't been home once from college this semester as her sister adapted to her new life as a vampire. But Iris is determined to give her sister the most human and normal Christmas possible so she goes all out. Gigi though has problems of her own she's trying to figure out like falling out of love with her high school sweetheart and a job interview at the local vampire council with terrifying Council official Ophelia Lambert. Holidays with family can be complicated but Christmas with the undead can be downright dangerous.
I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas was different from the previous books in the series in that it's not a romance although there were some romantic moments. This book takes places three years after The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires. I loved getting to see all the characters we've come to know over the previous books. I particularly liked getting to see Iris as a vampire as her book ended with that decision being a few years off. I also really enjoyed seeing Gigi as an adult and how much stuff has changed for her. This book nicely sets up the next book with Gigi getting a job at the local council and I'm excited to see how that goes. There's also a few moments between Gigi and a mystery vampire that I can't wait to see how that plays out.
Overall I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas was a fun read and I'm looking forward to picking up The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire soon.
I’m Dreaming of an Undead Christmas is a lovely holiday novella set in the Half-Moon Hollow series. The story is told from the first person POV of Gigi, sister to Iris, the main character of the first full-length book, The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires. Gigi is home on holiday break from the University of Kentucky, and it is first time seeing her big sister since Iris became a vampire.
Fans of Ms. Harper’s Half-Moon Hollow series will enjoy this story, and while it can be read as a stand alone, I feel that there are too many side characters with detailed histories for someone new to the series to complete enjoy the novella. I felt that if I hadn't have read the first book in the series, I would have been lost. With that said, those who read the series need to pick up this story because actions that take place are sure to have a major impact on the next book.
I enjoyed seeing what’s become of Gigi, Iris, Cal, and the others since the conclusion of Stray Vampires, and this novella serves as a lovely “catch up.” However, it reads more like a prequel to the upcoming full-length novel, The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire than its own story. Gigi is coming into a transitional point in her life. She’s finishing up college, looking for a job, deciding if her high school sweetheart is the one for her… She’s making some big decisions that will undoubtedly have repercussions on her life and possibly her well-being. While the decisions are made during this novella, their impacts are yet to be discovered.
The novella has many of the traits that I adore in Ms. Harper’s writing: charming setting, crazy characters, and a sense of humor that has me laughing out loud. However, it bothered me that after everything Gigi and Iris have experienced, Gigi was so casual about a potential deadly threat. I was also frustrated that the story itself was left completely open ended.
Overall, I’m Dreaming of an Undead Christmas is a funny look at the holidays in Half Moon Hollow, and Gigi's story is far from over. Coupling the craziness of the holidays with the zany chapters in this series had me laughing too many times to count. I enjoyed my return to Half Moon Hollow, and it completely whet my appetite for the next story.
My Rating: B, Liked It Review copy provided by NetGalley
I'm not sure what happened here...I was enjoying a pretty classic Molly Harper storyline, and next thing you know, it was, like, over. I realize this is a novella, but even for a novella, this one not only was cut exceptionally short, it ended abruptly...leaving me a bit confused as to what happened. I've read the Undead Sublet, another novella by Molly Harper, and quite enjoyed it. In fact, it was my first introduction to her work. And, this one seemed to be heading in a similar direction (although I did enjoy the Undead Sublet much more)...but what was unsatisfying for me, was the nowhere the story went. Just when things started getting interesting. If anything. I'd say this was the start of a book...a full-length book...that was released as a teaser/freebie to entice the reader to get the whole story. Kind of odd really. There was a kissing-bandit Vampire introduced, and made for an intriguing plot development (and some actual action vs. a whole cast of characters, that, to me, was too numerous for a novella). But, it was simply "wrapped up" with jewelry mysteriously showing up (supposedly given by him). Um...okay...not quite the closure I was hoping for. Perhaps this is a pre-quel of sorts to the next book in the series? I dunno. In fairness, I received this as a freebie from my friends at Audible, so I suppose I can't complain...but, in fair warning to those thinking of buying this one...if you want to try Molly Harper on for size, start with the Undead Sublet, then I'd suggest trying a full-size novel...and maybe working your way, in order, through the series. Maybe then this little novella/book non-starter would make more sense. I like Molly Harper, complete with snark and every-day vampires. So I try not to judge too harshly.
Molly Harper is known for her romance novels, including a couple of paranormal romance series. This fun little novella is the prequel to a novel to be released in 2015, The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire. When I saw the book cover for I’m Dreaming of an Undead Christmas, I couldn’t resist finding out more but I was concerned it might be a book in the middle of a series I hadn’t read.
It is part of the Half-Moon Hollow series, which has included at least two prior books about the main character’s family; however, I had no problems jumping right in and reading it as a stand-alone. It’s a quick read at only 132 pages so, if you’re pressed for reading time during the holidays and don’t want anything heavy, this could be just what you’re looking for so check out our review at http://popcornreads.com/?7951 to find out.
I love novellas as part of a series. They can fill in stories that the writer wasn't able to use as part of the main plot line. Or, they can just be a fun add-on like this one. The good news is that you don't always have to read the full series before hand. I hadn't read any of these books but was able to follow along and enjoy this one just fine. Now that I've been properly introduced to the characters I can't wait to read all of them.
Merry Christmas bloodsuckers!
4/5 stars. Thank you to the publisher for providing an e-copy through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was fun holiday short full of Half Moon Hollow/Jane Jamison characters. Gigi returns home for the holidays, her first since Iris, her sister, went vampy. While out and about, Gigi has her first run-in with the handsome, mysterious vampire (their HEA featured in The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire, book #3).
I LOVED the inclusion of Harper's holiday recipes at the end. I was getting kinda drooly over the idea of a bacon-wrapped turkey.
Once I accepted that the vampires and other paranormal creatures were going to be friendly and caring, I enjoyed this holiday family tale. I still think it is weird for these creatures to not be monsters though...
Very funny, as expected from any Molly Harper book (novella)! I didn't realize it was more of a prequel to Gigi's story (which I hope is soon) when I started listening to it, but it was fun to catch up with characters like Jane, Andrea, etc. A classic Harper story :)
3.5 points The narration is very good - as I have come to expect from Amanda Ronconi. There is nothing wrong with novella either, writing is just as quirky and funny as usual. My relatively low points are only due to the fact that so far Gigi is one of my least favourite female leads in the series. I don't dislike her but I am not particularly fond of her either. She is a bit immature (well, she IS very young) and flighty. But her heart is in the right place.
A fun little holiday moment with a found family. I loved the first POV, unusual for me, but Harper is excellent at making me rethink what I enjoy. Not necessarily a romance so much as a prequel. Still a nice read because kitchen disasters are always relatable.
I listened to this book via audible. This book was well written and if this was my genre of choice i would have loved this book. I would recommend it to my friends.
