My name is Kayleigh Hilton, and I am a self-published author from Preston, United Kingdom. When I am not busy creating the world of Scarlet or any future books that are brewing. You can find me working for the NHS and spending time with my family, friends and my parents three West-highland Terriers: Amelia, Lia, and Milo.
I am a strong supporter when it comes to Mental Health and Domestic Abuse, no matter if it's mental or physical, as I am a survivor myself. From early 2018- early 2022, I found myself in a relationship that I thought I deserved and kept telling myself everything he did was my fault. No matter what people kept telling me, I kept telling them it's not what it looks like, when it really was. In 2022, I finally realised I deserved better and didn't deserve to be a victim any longer and left that relationship. From there, I fell into a dark place mentally and later found the light with the help of my family, my friends and by writing Scarlet.
Within my writing journey, I plan to bring these topics up in my own creations, so people know they are not alone. A lot of the things I have felt within my own journey are expressed within the Scarlet world and the message I want to create is that there is always beauty hiding within the darkness. Without the pain and torment I went through, I don't think Scarlet would exist. Scarlet is my lifeline, my baby, my truth, conjured up to create an imaginative world that I want to share with you, the readers. It's a place where I want my voice to be heard and a place where anyone who has ever felt that way to know they aren't alone in this world and it's ok to not be ok.
With this platform, I do plan to try and help raise more awareness and hopefully a community where we can all be stronger together.
Please feel free to join me on my journey by following my socials and lets create a community where we can help each other.
This was beautifully heartbreaking. It's an emotional journey exploring love, family, and connection. Between flashbacks of past and present you get to visit key moments as their love story unfolds and on their journey to parenthood. It's filled with touching scenes, romantic gestures and passionate romance. As the story unfolds you realise Killian is trapped in a cycle of trauma, and his friends are desperate to help him without causing further pain. It shows the confusion, denial and trauma from love and loss, and the way we try to protect ourselves from the truth. This will undoubtedly make you cry, but it's a story filled with depth, love and beautiful characters.
🦋"She's a true enchantress, and I can't help but feel drawn to her"
🦋"In every single one, she is there, she's my past, my present and my Goddamn future"
🦋"From the moment we rekindled our love, I've known that I wanted a future with her. I've known that one day, I would ask her to be mine forever"
🦋"I realise that no matter what happens, we'll face it together- just as we always have"
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Spice: 🌶️🌶️ This Novel is such a brilliantly written story about the tragedy of loss and heartache, but also of strength, love, and second chances. I loved this contemporary dark romance; it is emotionally shattering, but pieces back together beautifully. I most definitely recommend reading this book! Be sure to check the TW’s and have the tissue ready!
I would like to thank the Author for the ARC I received of this amazing book, in exchange for a honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.
Ghost of You is a Contemporary Romance with some darkness and so so much more, like oh my gosh can this please be a movie????! It was clear to see what was happening from the beginning but omg was it crazy to watch it unfold in front of the MC!! This story has a deeper meaning than what you would expect and I really enjoyed reading this even if it did pull at my heartstrings🖤
Kayleigh is an author that emphasises raising awareness on mental health. I couldn’t agree more. This story is one that has strong currents of joy and excitement, to grief, and the effects that come with facing trauma.
Unlike other books, the outcome is hinted from the beginning. Though I had hoped every chapter would prove me wrong. It is written in such a way that you are so immersed with the MC and his way of thinking, disregarding what you already know has to be true.
I adore these characters so much. Lillian and Laelia are a power couple. So in love. So equal, and so fun. They are adventurous souls, and I thoroughly enjoyed the antics they got up to.
I love this story. I love that Kayleigh has dedicated this to her grandmother who is dealing with dementia. 🤍 And even though I’ve never sobbed so much about a book, I enjoyed the journey it took me on.
Thank you for ARC my love, and I cannot wait to see what else you have in store for us.
This book tore me into pieces in the best way. Moving between past and present I was hooked straight away. I immediately fell in love with Killian and then Laelia. Their relationship felt like a warm tight hug 🫂. Killians utter adoration for Laelia truly warmed my heart. I could feel the excitement of Killian about their future through the pages. And I was excited for it too! Killians joy was infectious and it really shone through this book. It is so well written. The chapters with Killian and Laelia on their various dates made me grin and kick my feet , what a man. What a m a n. Okay. 👌 Also, the food in this book had me actually drooling, oh my god. I gotta visit Lola’s bakery like yesterday. Much of this book hit me SO hard. I cried. I sobbed. And then I cried some more. The pain of everything was written incredibly well, I really did feel it.
Ghost Of You is breathtakingly beautiful and emotionally tragic. This book is unforgiving and will destroy you while ripping your heart out only to put it back together.!
A true tear-jerker!
A beautifully written tragic romance… It will hit you with all the feels. And is advisable to have a healthy stack of tissues to hand!
As a beta reader, this novel was a breeze to read… We navigate a beautiful and tragic storyline as we treverse through the narrative and through the psyche of trauma.
With a depth of emotions that could get the best of you.
Kayleigh has done an immensely wonderful job with this storyline a beautiful, tragic story of loss, epic Love and traumatic truths.
As I was reading, I fell in love with the two main characters. Killian, He is such a wonderful character with an incredible personality and a heart of gold! He was written to perfection. You will want to hold him …he really deserves all the love. Laelia, A beautiful, feisty strong woman that you cannot help but admire.
And what a beautiful love story and rekindling a relationship thought lost.
The storyline shifts from past to present… it was refreshing and uniquely relayed, and in such a beautiful way this alone would have you in tears.
But when I actually realised what was going on my heart broke into 1000 little pieces, but Kayleigh did such a wonderful job at putting them back together.
Brilliant narrative and plot line, weaved together through a beautiful yet heartbreaking tragedy.it is powerful storytelling.
You will not be able to help but love this story. It will grow on you with the turn of each page, pulling you deeper into caring immensely for the welfare of these characters.
Side characters were fabulous well constructed and added everything that was needed to the storyline. Simply put, this is nothing short of brilliant, epically beautiful…
Kayleigh displays her magical ability to create and inspire… her pure talent and elegance in her craft!
This is a masterpiece…
Absolutely recommend to every romance fan… • • Why do I feel like I'm living a lie? Fate, destiny, providence. I can’t say enough about how well written and suspenseful (even though the author made the plot known from the start) this book was. I originally would have preferred a little more mystery behind the plot, but upon reading this story a second time, I wouldn't change a thing. The way the author included so many friends through Killian’s agonizing discovery left my heart strings feeling as if they were being played like a marionette.
I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who is open to love, loss, romance (semi 🌶️), and discovery.
Ghost of You is a gut punch to your heart that will have you hoping you're wrong while knowing you're right - because the truth will shatter your heart along with the MMCs. If you're a fan of books that will wreck you emotionally (in a beautiful, soul searing type of way), read this. I recommend having tissues nearby.
If you're a fan of the ways a brain can work, especially following a trauma, read this.
The author confirms that the reader knowing what's going on before the MMC was an intentional choice. Personally, I think it works quite well. I've never read a book that's formatted that way, nor have I read about dissociative amnesia.
📖 I love that while you know what's going on but the MMC doesn't, you get to experience their love as it was with that bittersweet knowledge. You're taken an an emotional journey through the years of their relationship in a then/now type format that puts you right there with them.
I appreciate the look into various areas of mental health and healthy coping mechanisms.
✍️🏼 Beautifully and eloquently written, nearly poetic at times, with loads of emotion.
⏳️ The pacing is great with no pointless meandering. Hilton takes you through the highlights, without it feeling like you're getting just the highlights.
👥 Great character development - they really shine in their personalities. I loved the MCs, separately and together, and couldn't help but hope that what I knew was somehow wrong. I'm still hoping I'm misunderstood. 😂
💞 The second chance romance is beautifully done. Their romance felt real, which made it feel more real to me.
🌶 The spice is well done and realistic. It's timed and placed well, doesn't impede plot or character development, but is used as one of many ways to show their deep connection.

I’m still an emotional wreck after reading Ghost Of You and I’m not sure I’ll ever be the same again!

This is a book that has you riding the emotional roller coaster from start to finish. It’ll tear your heart up and have you crying enough tears to fill a bath tub. It did me anyway!
I loved how raw this read was, the trauma of losing someone you love so much and how your body and mind can shut down but still keep going. The heartache for the people around you. And how not every love story as a happily ever after.
I adored the relationship of Killian and Laelia, they were some great characters with loveable personalities. They were a rekindled relationship that only blossomed, with every moment you could see how much love they had for each other, unfortunately their love story ended tragically. I truly wished they could have got a happy ending and although it wasn’t meant to be the message that was left was powerful and important.
I think Kayleigh Hilton did a wonderful job with this book but I do recommend having a good stock of tissues to hand with this one.
This book was heartbreaking and emotional to read! Such a unique storyline where we knew the outcome before the main characters did. We read from Killian’s POV as he recovers from a car accident and things aren’t all that they seem for him and we follow his thought process as he gradually puts the pieces together.
Kayleigh’s description throughout was fantastic and although I pictured Killian in my head as a big hardy guy with lots of tattoos, long hair and beard… he was really a big softy. I did feel his description didn’t quite match his personality at times though and would have maybe liked him to be a little bit… tougher? The description of Lola’s Bakery literally left me sitting with my mouth watering wanting a chocolate drizzled doughnut! Yum.
I loved that Halloweentown got a mention in this book - one of my all time fave movies!
Ethan and Jasper were some guys too and I think everyone deserves friends like these two!
I really enjoyed this contemporary romance book and would definitely recommend it. Be sure to check out the trigger warnings first though!
To be fortunate enough to have your love walk back into your life is a true blessing. Killian is not about to let Laelia go again!
Step into their lives through a mix of flashbacks and current life events. Prepare to experience a love that never dies.
This is a raw, emotionally charged story that unfortunately could be very relatable. The story is beautifully tragic and rips a hole in your soul, even though you can probably see where it is going (it doesn’t make it easier!). Check the trigger warnings and grab a box of tissue.
Thank you to author Kayleigh Hilton for the opportunity to read this beautiful story! I received an EPUB and my review is being left voluntarily.
A beautiful story of grief, loss, and the journey of acceptance.
Every possible emotion you can feel is wrapped up every part of this story. Follow Killian as he struggles with one of the most tough stages of grief; denial. As you learn of Killian and Laelia's story throughout the book as it bounces between past and present, it makes it all the more heartbreaking. Keep your tissues at the ready, because you are defintely going to need them.
Note: Thank you Kayleigh for letting me be one of your ARC readers. This was brilliantly and beautifully written. I can't wait to see what you write next!
⭐️4.5⭐️ Omg I don’t know what to say,I absolutely loved this book. Kayleigh has turned my world upside down I don’t think I could find a book as beautiful written as this one. What I enjoyed the most was how we got to read about killians journey and details about him, also obviously the spice she wrote like ahhhhh I loved every steamy scene.killian and Laelia are just an amazing couple and I loved how Kayleigh wrote flashbacks to show us readers how there relationship progressed. This book has made me ugly cry so when you read it (because I highly recommend you do) don’t forget the tissues ❤️
Kayleigh is known for writing tear jerkers so be warned when picking up her stories. However, if you are okay with crying for 72 hours after reading her books, then i highly recommend giving this one a read.
It breaks your heart early on, and you have to carry on reading for the full outcome, whilst the hole in your chest grows bigger and bigger.
The love between Killian and Laelia was so beautiful, a love that we all hope we have or find. The scene with the butterflies, omg it was so romantic and was my favourite part of the book.
Kayleigh wrote Ghost of you so well and wrote trauma in a beautiful but heartbreaking way.
I prayed that there was going to be a twist and I would get my HEA, but life isn't like that, and love is beautiful, raw, and painful.
Wow, I cannot recommend this book enough. It starts with such a beautiful dedication. The playlist was like one of my day to day playlists so it made me very happy to see that. I will say read the triggers before reading, they are there for a reason. You instantly fall in love with the MMC as you can tell what kind of person he is from the first chapter. And then as the story progresses and the way he talks about the FMC is just so heartwarming and beautiful. He really dotes on her and you can feel it. Their relationship is just pure relationship goals, they are so perfect for eachother. You figure out early on what is happening but unlike in most stories where it spoils it and you become deflated or uninterested, knowing/coming to the realisation of what is going on only makes things so much more intense. I spent most of this book in tears for that reason. The format of the book is pure genius, the way the author has used the layout of the story to further add to the imagery is phenomenal. There's also quite a bit of spice in the story as well for those that care about that. Now, back to the crying, after starting crying from less than 1/4 of the way into the book, you don't think you could get much more broken than that, you assume that is going to be the level of hurt throughout. Oh no, the story completely breaks you. I have not had a book break me this badly since I first read 'The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas' as a teenager (which was a while ago now), this book had me ugly crying for over an hour after I had finished the reading. I know I am going to read it again and the same thing will happen over and over again. Can't wait to get this on my shelf so I can read it during those moments I need to just release everything.
Ghost of You is a beautifully done love story, with some darker elements (mostly trauma), and a whole lot of deeper meaning throughout the book. This one is definitely not a HEA book, but it for sure will pull at your heart strings. It switched between a few different timelines which was a lot to get used to at first. However, even though I don't typically love the multiple timelines, but this one was just so well done that I never had an issue with it. Seriously, such a good book! I was offered this book as a part of an ARC team, and it was my very first ARC book ever, I am so grateful to Kayleigh and her team for allowing me to be a part of the journey!
This book, it was so so so good!! I wouldn't go too deep into the plot because I think this is the kind of book you have to dive in blind.
I got this book as an arc but forgot the premise and didn't read the blurb(again) before reading the book. And let me tell you, I'm so glad I didn't.
Kayleigh wrote a book with a beautiful relationship. The love between the MMC and FMC is so sweet, intense, and insanely believable that it hurts. You get so involved with the characters that you don't want something bad to happen. And Kayleigh is a master with breadcrumbs, she really is. While reading, you know what will come, but you wish you had interpreted it wrong.
I really fell in love with this book and with the writing style of the author. It really is a must-read for everyone who loves a good romance book.
I received this as an arc but this review is all my own opinion.
Wow, wow, WOW. This book was emotional journey, one that weaves love, loss, and second chances so flawlessly. I was hooked from the start.
Kayleigh’s writing pulls you into the lives of two beautifully flawed protagonists whose chemistry feels authentic and raw. The vulnerability of the characters adds a layer of depth that makes their love story not only believable but deeply moving. I absolutely love when an author explores heavy emotions. Not everyone can portray this properly, but Kayleigh did an amazing job.
This book tugged at my heartstrings and It’s been a while since a book made me feel this emotional, and I loved every second of it. I definitely need more books like this on my shelf. Which is shocking since generally I don’t really care for second chance romances. But I had a good feeling about this book and I was NOT disappointed in the slightest. Honestly this may turn me onto second chance romances now 👀
The Ghost of You is more than a romance—it’s a journey. It feels personal and relatable, leaving you with a renewed belief in the beauty of love and second chances. If these are things you love in a book, then this is for you.
Thank you, Kayleigh, for trusting me with your book and letting me read this early. 🥹💜
🚨 Please keep in mind to check the trigger warnings before reading this book. There may be topics that aren’t suitable for everyone and your mental health and wellbeing is important. 🚨
Ghost of you is terribly sweet and beautifully heartbreaking. Kayleigh Hilton has wrapped up a perfectly written story of love, loss, self-awareness, and unexpected healing in a very palatable way.
Throughout the book you are led between scenes that show a depth of love we all yearn to find, and pain that we are all unfortunately met with in our lives. You fall in love with these characters and find yourself wrapped up so deeply that by the end you feel every pull of emotion the author intended plus the unearthing and healing of your own traumas in the most beautiful way.
If I could rate this book higher than 5 stars I would. I have a tendency to DNF books quickly if they do not grip me right away and Ms. Hilton accomplished a chokehold on me from the first sentence I read. Her colorful descriptions, and in-depth character development shines as you get lost in the pages.
The depiction of sickness (mental) is gut-wrenching but real. You can feel the gravity of what the main character is going through and how it touches and interacts with the rest of the people in the story. It is very deep, very real, and for those who have touched this particular illness in any way in their real life they will feel incredibly seen and might find some peace in these pages.
I feel privileged to have been able to read this prior to its release. I have not only found a book that will haunt me for the rest of my life in the best way, but an author who I will trust to lead me into chaos and pain to show me the beautiful things trapped in the darkness.
Top 5 books of all time for me.
Thank you Kayleigh for spilling your soul onto these pages, I will be revisiting this often to relive one of the best love stories I've ever read.

✨️Review A truly raw and real look at the deep turns of immense happiness and heartache that can come to pass in our lives, this story is an emotional one for sure. Tissues recommend and check content warnings.
There's a partial "secret" that the reader will figure out not too far in but that's intended, as it's very much about Killian's emotional/psychological journey. He's an absolute sweetheart, genuine, and kind. And Laelia is just the spark of light that completes his life. They are each other's heart, home and light. The dual and shifting timelines adds a very poetic feel and adds an additional weight to the impact.
At times an absolute wrecking ball of emotion, but there's also incredible love and light moments to be found. Because...that's what life is made up of. It's the beautiful and messy sometimes, but in the end, still worth every bit to have and cherish those good times. I can tell Kayleigh put so much of her heart into this story and you'll feel every bit of it.
“Sometimes the brightest flowers can be overshadowed by the deepest sadness.” “She’s everything I could ever want and more. She’s my lifeline and my whole damn fucking world.” “I’m left in no man’s land, grasping for answers that seem just out of reach.” “Only you could turn a romantic meal into a five-star disaster.” “Aa long as she’s with me, I have a reason to keep breathing.”
This is one of those books that makes you second guess everything. I had suspicions about what was happening early on, but only the last few chapters fully confirmed what had happened.
I liked how many flashbacks to different times there were in the book, and how some of the story was happening in the present, but also a lot had already happened and it was told through Killian’s memories. A lot of the story is also told through his inner monologue, which worked well for the storyline.
The story of Killian and Laelia was beautifully written. And the highly descriptive writing made me feel like I was in the middle of the story, almost tasting the mango ice cream or chocolate doughnuts. This was a funny, lighthearted romance, but also a deeper story about tragedy, traumatic experiences, and loss.
I’ve previously beta read some of the chapters so I knew some of the things that happened, but it didn’t take anything away from my reading experience or make the events any less impactful. And even if I knew some scenes, I didn’t know the whole story.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
“Heaven isn’t a place I’ll go to…heaven is you. And one day, I’ll find you there. “
Sometimes I like to torture myself with heart wrenching stories that will make me cry. This one did just that. This was a beautifully written story about a man named Killian, who is struggling with his mental health after losing the love of his life and unborn child in a terrible car accident.
We know from very early on in the book what happened to his fiance, Laelia, but this book takes us on Killians journey through coping with what happened and him suffering from amnesia. I felt so sad for him throughout this book, especially when he reflects back on all of the big moments they shared together and the fact that he has only memories to hold onto.
The characters in this book seemed a bit relatable to me. Their love for tattoos(and having matching ones as well), her love for Alice in Wonderland, and one of his favorite things to do was sit by the firepit under the starry night sky with her.
This book will teach you to really live in the moment and be present. Life is precious and can be taken from us at any moment.
Thank you @kaylzbookadventures for sending me an early e-copy of this book. This was an amazing read that will stick with me for a long time 🖤

Ghost of You was an emotional journey to say the least. This story delves into the relationship between Killian and Laelia, with a twist. The two were recently in a car accident and are navigating their life following that. I came up with a theory by chapter 3-4 with what I thought was going on and sadly, I was right. The emotional trauma in this story is so pure and heartbreaking. I loved how the story truly showed the impact that emotional trauma can have on ones mind and how they may effect their daily lives.
The love Killian has for Laelia, is truly something beautiful. He has so much genuine passion for her and it's truly admirable. The way he talks about her to himself and to others. The scene where he is telling the story of how they met to his client while he tattoos him, ugh perfection. The deeper we dive into the story, the harder it gets because even though the ending is inevitable and I knew it was coming, it's painful all the same. I caught myself tearing up and felt my heart breaking right along with the characters.
Overall, this was an emotional journey from start to finish but was so beautiful. It was a tragedy, what happened to these characters, but the author portrayed trauma and pain in the realest form.

4.25⭐️ Ghost of You is a stunning, emotional journey that will leave you completely and beautifully heartbroken. As a ‘read the subtext’ style reader, I had theories on what I thought was going to happen quite early on, but secretly prayed that I was wrong. Killian and Laelia’s story had me gripped from the get go, and it was impossible not to fall completely and utterly in love with them both.
There were no negatives to this book, in my opinion — only that I desperately didn’t want the ending to come even though I realised the further I read that it was inevitable. It pulls you in as a reader, makes you love both the MMC and FMC, then leaves you heart broken with them. Tears were shed.
The exploration of mental illness, especially the discussion of how emotional trauma can truly impact a person, was executed beautifully. It is very deep, and I can see how this may be hard for some readers so I would really reccomend reviewing the tropes and main themes / trigger warnings before reading in case it isn’t for you!
Overall, I absolutely LOVED reading this book and highly reccomend that you give it a go too🫶

The book shows the depth of love and the way we ache for it. I loved how impressively writer has described the mental rep without making it feel weird.
It was so heart wrenching and you can feel every ounce of pain while reading the part of the character.
You'll be able to connect with the characters and hook be able to understand the journey they are going through.
Killian and Leila... beautifully written and presented.

The story beautifully treads past and present and you won't stop at single chapter and you'll be wanting more and more ♥️
“She’s everything I could ever want and more. She’s my lifeline and my whole damn fucking world.”
Once again Kayleigh has made me ugly cry with this beautifully heartbreaking masterpiece of a romance novel. This book reminded me of when I read "Me Before You" by Jojo Moyes for the first time. You can see what is going to happen pretty early on, and you spend the rest of the book with a growing pain in your chest while being in denial about the ending.
I loved how the story was told with flashbacks of the progression of Killian and Laelia's relationship and I fell in love with them so quickly with how much he adores her. Obviously a part of me wishes they could've got the happy ending that they deserved but life is messy and painful and reading this book was such a cathartic experience.
This book has a few spicy scenes which only made me love Killian even more and they definitely didn't overpower the emotional depth of the rest of the story.
"My heart is going to forever ache for what it hasn't got"
Thank you so much to Kayleigh Hilton for providing me with an ARC for this book. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all thoughts expressed here are my own.
This story is a beautiful story of 'the one who got away' and second chance romance. It will wrap you up in the warmth of a great romance novel and entice you into a comfy love story, but it will then shatter your heart into a thousand pieces. From the start, you fall in love and become entwined within the lives and romance of Killian and Laelia, and you can not forget Meatball. The story will take you between the past and present time, unfurling the story, which will keep you wanting more and more and more. The pages won't stop turning. I audibly gasped, laughed, and ugly cried as I immersed myself in Killian and Laelias' world. Kayleighs writing is so beautiful and descriptive. The way she lets her words fill the pages, you can smell the coffee in the bakery, hear the tattoo gun buzzing, and feel the waterfall spray upon your cheeks.
"My heart is going to forever ache for what it hasn't got"
This story is so beautiful and tragic all at the same time. The way it's written pulls you in and takes you on a journey of love and loss.
Killian and Laelia are truly breathtaking. After a second chance at life together they fully rekindle their old flame and create an epic love story.
Both characters are extremely likeable and Killian is just an absolute walking green flag. They love each other completely and your rooting for their HEA from the beginning.
Now it's no secret what happens from early on in the story, the way it's written leaves you questioning if you're right. The jumps in the timeline are seamless and really help build up to the end when it all comes to light.
The way Kayleigh navigates her writing to show different aspects of grief and inclusion of dissociative amnesia is stunning and really brings to life how the mind works in mysterious ways.
If you're after a read that will possibly reduce you to tears then this book is the one.
