3 ½ stars: the story is interesting and well written and fascinating. But the end of the book is not the end of the story. Like many Fantasy authors E. C. tends toward a saga rather than a novel. And we all know how that worked for, say, Robert Jordan.
I'll see what the 2nd book in this trilogy will be, but I fear it'll only be another chapter, making this series a "three or nothing" affair.
