⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is a dark, atmospheric dive into supernatural horror and religious fantasy, blending exorcisms, jinn, and angelic lineage with raw human fear. From the opening scene, the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife—Thomas, overwhelmed and teetering on the edge, meets a mysterious Principality who speaks in riddles and flickering candlelight. The dialogue? Sharp. The atmosphere? Heavy with dread and destiny.

The book doesn’t just tell a story; it pulls you into a world where faith, fear, and the unknown collide. If you love occult mysteries, deep theological themes, and a protagonist barely holding it together, this one’s a must-read.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review WHERE DEMONS RESIDE
TW:// Abuse, demonic themes, violence and gore, an agnostic perspective of Christianity, depictions of mental health (including but not limited to: anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, depression and self harm). ALL WHICH CAN BE FOUND AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK.

THIS BOOK! It feels like everytime that as the reader you have the answers and think that you know where the book is going to go, the questions get changed. This book keeps readers on the edge of their seat and honestly just makes you invested into the story of both Thomas and Elijah.
Throughout this book, there were moments that were heartbreaking. And no, it is not when you find out that Elijah and his family are demons. It’s more of the fact that there are people, like Thomas’ grandfather, who think that demons are the worst thing to ever exist when SOME of them are just trying to live in peace and aren't causing any issues to themselves and those around them.
I was really invested into the story pretty much since Thomas and his mom moved out to where his grandfather lived after his ‘passing’ and when Thomas meets the Anderson family. I will say that there does seem to be more to this family that meets the eye but I will not give that away for those who do want to read this book for themselves. Because this does have a bunch of twists and turns that honestly keep the reader guessing until the last page.
I will say that this is more of the upper YA crowd (IE 16+) due to the fact that it does deal with some heavy themes. I will make sure to check out the trigger warnings if you are thinking about reading this book so that way you are not blind sided. Content warnings are at the beginning of the book.
I will say that if you are looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat this fall season, then make sure that you grab your hands on a copy. Because this is the perfect book to become sleep deprived over.

Elijah and Thomas are brought together by forces outside of their control, there is evil magic at play threatening their very existence. In this story we go along on a journey with these two men as they discover who they really are and what they are capable of.

When I first started this story I wasn't sure what to think as there was A LOT going on all at once. As I continued reading, everything started making more sense, and as the story went on I started understanding what was going on. I personally loved this concept, it was really unique and I haven't read anything like this before. I thought the writing itself was good and full of nice details and great characters. The pacing was a bit off and disjointed for a bit in the beginning but about halfway through the story it mellowed back out and developed and flowed really nicely from that point on.

Elijah and Thomas's story was special and I loved the unique take on being destined to be together. I liked the slow-burn that occured between these two men, their relationship starts off rocky but eventually smooths itself out and becomes a bond that both of them cherish. Overall a really interesting and well written book by a new-to-me author!

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I thought this was a good debut book by Kara Macris and I’m looking forward to reading more from her in the future. I enjoyed this book, as well as getting to immerse myself in this world that Kara has created but it did take me a bit longer than usual to finish reading this book. I found Kara’s take on demons/demon hunting/exorcism interesting. I do wish that some of the magical things mentioned during this book were explored more in depth, the animal spirit guides is just one example. I enjoyed seeing Thomas and Elijah connect despite the circumstances they find themselves in.

Even though this book is aimed at a younger audience since it’s YA I believe it can still be enjoyed by a more mature audience, myself included. I did find that the final showdown happened very quickly, a blink and you miss it moment but well executed. I hope that this isn’t the last we’ve seen from this world, as there’s one happily ever after that I’d love to see but only time will tell. I’m looking forward to reading more books by Kara Macris in the future. I’d recommend this book, and author to others.

******I received a complimentary copy of this book through GRR. I would still happily review this book even if I purchased it myself. My thoughts and feelings about this book are completely unbiased******

Where Demons Reside by Kara Macris had me totally hooked from page one! 📖✨ Thomas Walker’s journey as a demon exorcist is intense, but what really hit me was the surprising emotional depth. I went in expecting some action and maybe a little suspense (and it’s got plenty of that 💥😱), but I didn’t expect to get so emotionally attached to these characters—especially Thomas and Elijah, a demon with just a hint of humanity or a dose of good left in him👼😈 Their unlikely friendship had me questioning everything about what’s “good” or “evil.” ⚖️

Ms. Macris nails Thomas’s struggle between his family’s exorcist duties and his own compassion. Her writing is sharp and addictive—I couldn’t put it down, flying through every twisty turn! 🔥📚 By the end, I was so into Thomas and Elijah’s story, I honestly didn’t want it to end. This is one of those books you wish you could read again for the first time. 💫💔

With strong characters, a killer plot, and big questions about right and wrong, this book is more than just a dark fantasy—it’s an experience. 🌌💭 If you’re down for a story that’ll keep you thinking, Where Demons Reside is a must-read. 👏📖🌟

This was a pretty cute but also dark and spooky paranormal romance.
I loved Thomas and Elijah, and the connection between them and Zadkiel and Michael was really interesting.
The storyline was unique to me with the demons and principalities and how Thomas and Elijah originally met.
This is the first book I've read by Kara, and I'm very excited to read more by her in the future!
If you love paranormal stories with a lot of gore and a sweet romance, I definitely recommend this!

This was an interesting read with many twists and surprises. It starts out rather dark and it keeps with the dark theme all the way through, but with friendship, family, and a bit of romance too. It was a different take on demons than other books I’ve read. I really enjoyed seeing Thomas and Elijah as their bond grew

*I am voluntarily leaving a review after having received a free copy of this book.*

Interesting concept, but the execution left a lot to be desired. I spent a good portion of the book confused as to what was going on, and why it was going on. By 85% I was thinking there must be a sequel in the works, because I couldn't see how everything could be wrapped up so fast. Well, it was, and the conclusion was predictably rushed and unsatisfying. I'm left with a lot of questions.

Star Rating:
⭐⭐⭐⭐: The plot was very interesting. There were twists and turns that made me gasp. The banter between Thomas (MMC) and his love interest was adorable. I loved it.

Introduction:
This is my book review of Where Demons Reside by Kara Macris. Mention if applicable: This is my first time reading a book by Macris. The author recommended this to me directly and I gave it a go and enjoyed the read!

Summary:
Where Demons Reside starts off with Thomas performing his first exorcism with his grandpa’s guidance and the rest of the Principalities in the Catholic Church. Thomas has a full-on panic attack right before in the bathroom where he meets Elijah who gives him a self-soothing chant to help him focus, “Stars in my lungs, skies in my breath; I inhale calm, I exhale stress.”

Thomas is supposed to exorcise a girl who is clearly possessed and another demon girl tries to stop him with her brother, Elijah, and father, Bill. She says that there is another way to protect her soul and not kill her.

Thomas performs the exorcism according to his grandpa’s instructions and this eviscerates the girl leaving Thomas reeling with guilt and disgust, promising himself to help those possessed and not unalive them.

Later, Thomas has gone back home a few towns away; he and his mother don’t hear from his grandpa until they find out that he was deceased and leave them his house. Thomas and his mother move to Meadowbank where Thomas realizes that Elijah and his demon family live right next door. With the influence of Elijah and their palpable connection, Thomas figures out the truth of who he really is and what it truly means to be a Principality.

Character Analysis:
Thomas is described as “a super anxious, stammer-prone wallflower.” “A seventeen-year-old magical being battling pit stains, flagging stamina, and an impending nervous breakdown.” He doesn’t have a lot of self-confidence even though he’s got all this power and self-righteousness from being the Archangel Michael reincarnate. But he has a big heart and wants to help, but most importantly wants to understand.

Elijah is quiet and the quintessential teenage boy who only talks when he feels like it. He likes to sneak up on people and pull pranks, but go back to a serious deadpan face. He’s tortured in the way that he was raised by abusive people in foster care and didn’t really have a life without hurt even in Bill’s care.

Conflict:
There are a lot of conflicts and they are: the demon possessed people that are trying not to give into or have given into madness; they mystery of the deaths of all the Principalities except for Thomas; Thomas and Elijah’s growing relationship and what their love represents; finding the lost souls.

Spice Level:
🌶️💋: The tension between Elijah and Thomas is great. There is kissing and a very closed door spicy scene.

Conclusion:
Where Demons Reside has a few things that I didn’t quite understand and I wanted it to be summed up like in the beginning of the story during the exorcism. If Lily and her family wanted to save the girl then why didn’t they? I know that they were supposed to keep a low profile not to give away their demon-side but we find out later that the Principalities can sense demonic presences. Why didn’t Thomas keep Sharon imprisoned if she was indeed giving into her madness? Why was Zadkiel trying to hurt or even destroy Thomas if Thomas was Zadkiel’s true love reincarnate?

Warning to the Readers:
There is gore and blood, unaliving, and possession.

Recommendation:
I do recommend Where Demons Reside by Kara Macris if you are open-minded when it comes to religion and the spiritual world and know that this is a YA MM romance.

I must say, *Where Demons Reside* is one of those books that grabs you by the heart and doesn’t let go. It’s not just another teen-hero-vs-evil story, but one that digs deeper into what it means to be human, even when you’re dealing with demons. Thomas Walker’s journey into a world where magic runs in his veins and demons are not entirely what they seem hit me in a way I wasn’t expecting. The balance between duty and compassion, something we all face in different forms, is masterfully explored here. And it reminded me of how sometimes our first impressions, even of people we consider 'bad', can be so wrong.

The bond between Thomas and Elijah, a demon trying to reclaim his humanity, is the real highlight. It’s not often we see such an unusual friendship where the lines between good and evil blur so beautifully. I felt Thomas's internal struggle every step of the way. There’s something relatable about that inner conflict—when you’re torn between what you've been taught and what you feel in your heart is right. This book had me reflecting on those moments in my own life when I questioned the 'rules' or traditions I grew up with. It’s not easy, and the emotional weight of that is what makes the story resonate so deeply.

What I would tell readers is that this book does a great job of showing that demons aren’t just mindless monsters. They're broken souls, in need of help, much like people we encounter in life who are battling their own demons. You’ll find yourself questioning who the real villains are by the time you finish. Kara Macris has woven this complex morality into the story without being preachy, which is a rare feat. It’s thought-provoking but still fast-paced enough to keep you on edge.

I highly recommend *Where Demons Reside* if you're into fantasy that isn’t just about magical battles but also challenges your views on right and wrong. It has action, heart, and plenty of emotional depth. And it left me with a powerful reminder: sometimes the scariest demons are the ones we don’t see, and maybe, just maybe, they deserve a second chance too.

When Kara Macris approached me to read her book, I was very sceptical. My first question was – what is the book about? LGBTQ Dark Fantasy Young Adult… oops.. never read a book of this genre. I said I would try and I did.
Well the book was totally worth it and did not disappoint.
The story is a very simple one. It is about how love, kindness and compassion can conquer all evils. It is the evil that needs to be vanquished and not the person. It’s a tale about how compassion for your fellow beings is so important for survival.
Thomas, a Principality who exorcises demons from people, has been conditioned from his childhood by his grandfather to believe that the demon in a person can only be eradicated by vanquishing him. However Elijah, a demon himself, tells him that there are humane ways of doing this. He himself has been on a quest to help demons like himself overcome their evil tendencies. This has been possible at a great expense to himself.
Circumstances bring the two together and they fall in love with each other. In the meanwhile Thomas realises that he and Elijah are reincarnates of the mythical archangels Micheal and Zadkiel, who represent good and evil respectively. What begins next is a struggle to overcome the evil in Elijah using the good in Thomas and their love for each other means they never give up trying.
The book is very well written making me marvel at the fact that it is a first book by the author. The storyline is simple and beautiful. The dialogues are spot on and the narrative moves at a brisk pace. Every end of a chapter had me wanting to read further. The author has taken a mythological story and woven a very interesting tale around it.
Though I am reading this genre for the first time and so would not be able to compare with other similar books, I would highly recommend this book for a read. Always a pleasure to be able to read the first work of an emerging author who I am sure will have many more amazing stories lined up to be written! Thank you Kara for this opportunity and trust. It has been a very thrilling experience.

I really, REALLY enjoyed this read. WHERE DEMONS RESIDE was not at all what I was expecting, and in this instance that turned out to be a good thing. I thought I was walking into a typical "chosen one who teams up with underdog to beat the odds" scenario, but what I got was so much more.

The opening chapter of this novel was fantastic. It's the sort of chapter that if I'd read it before reading the blurb of the book, I definitely would have picked up the book immediately after. It's gripping, it's intriguing, and who doesn't want to know more about the mysterious boy from the bathroom stalls? I sure did!

The magic system in this novel was like nothing I'd ever seen before. I won't say it's never been done, because maybe it has and I just haven't seen it, but for somebody who reads a lot of YA fantasy I found that having a unique magic system was a real breath of fresh air for me. It kept things interesting, and I felt also raised the stakes. Having to recite an entire Bible verse sure does take a lot longer than shouting, "Stupefy!" But all magic needs its limitations, so I appreciated that!

I loved the characters. I enjoyed that there was a smaller cast and nobody felt like a throwaway, even Thomas's ex who showed so much promise in the limited page time he got. Elijah gave me whiplash a few times, but that was quite fitting to the story, so no complaints there.

I love, love, love the way the demons were portrayed. Don't get me wrong, I also love the typical paranormal romance where the demon is basically just a human with magical powers - but the demons in WHERE DEMONS RESIDE are exactly the way I'd think of them in real life. They should evoke fear. They should evoke revolt. Thomas's learning journey might have been a little fast, but I appreciate that he had to overcome anxiety, panic attacks, and his moral compass in order to do what he thought was right.

Overall, this is one of the best books I've read this year. I can't wait to see what Kara Macris comes out with next!

Where Demons Reside by Kara Macris is a gripping, supernatural coming-of-age story that delves into the blurred lines between good and evil, duty and compassion.

Seventeen-year-old Thomas Walker’s life is upended when he learns that his seemingly normal existence conceals a family legacy of demon exorcism. But the demons Thomas encounters aren’t mindless, malevolent creatures; they are tormented souls, stripped of their humanity, and desperate for salvation.

Through Thomas’s journey the author explores the themes of redemption, free will, and the weight of inherited responsibilities, all while the narration maintains a pulse-pounding pace.

One of the standout elements of Where Demons Reside is Macris’s ability to build tension through both supernatural and personal stakes. Thomas’s relationships are fraught with inner turmoil, and his character is torn between his desires and the harsh realities of his destiny.

Thomas is the last surviving Principality, responsible for protecting humanity from the demonic threat. This revelation is a turning point, both for the plot and for Thomas’s character development. Suddenly, the stakes are higher than ever—he must not only confront the demons around him but also the darkness within himself.

The appearance of dark entities who relentlessly stalk Thomas through the streets only adds to the story’s creeping sense of dread while the inclusion of Biblical references lends a spiritual undertone to the story.

In conclusion, Where Demons Reside is an enthralling, multi-layered novel that defies expectations at every turn. Kara Macris takes readers on a dark and twisted journey through the supernatural, while also offering a deep and empathetic exploration of identity, duty, and morality. With rich world-building, high-stakes tension, and complex character dynamics, this book is a must-read for fans of supernatural thrillers and dark fantasy alike.

**Book Review: *Where Demons Reside* by Kara Macris**

*Where Demons Reside* by Kara Macris is an enthralling young adult fantasy that spins a fresh and thought-provoking take on the classic battle between good and evil. Seventeen-year-old Thomas Walker’s world is turned upside down when he learns that his bloodline carries the sacred duty of exorcizing demons. But as he delves deeper into his new role, he realizes that demons are not the mindless creatures of evil he was led to believe. Instead, they are tormented souls, desperate for salvation.

Macris beautifully explores themes of duty, morality, and compassion through Thomas’s internal conflict. He finds himself torn between his family’s long-standing mission to protect humanity and his growing understanding that the creatures he’s meant to destroy are victims in their own right. The introduction of Elijah Anderson, a demon with lingering humanity, adds depth to the story. Elijah’s desire to help both himself and others escape damnation forges an unlikely alliance with Thomas, setting the stage for a moral dilemma that challenges everything Thomas thought he knew.

The dynamic between Thomas and Elijah is at the heart of the novel, bringing a unique emotional layer to the narrative. Their bond is a beacon of hope amid the growing darkness, especially as the sinister Prince of Demons closes in. The novel’s pacing keeps readers engaged, as Thomas’s rejection of his family’s teachings leads to high-stakes consequences, with the threat of losing himself to the very shadows he fights against.

Kara Macris weaves together an exciting blend of action, emotion, and deep philosophical questions about redemption and the nature of evil. *Where Demons Reside* is a captivating and original addition to the YA fantasy genre, perfect for readers who enjoy stories that challenge traditional notions of good and evil while delivering suspense, magic, and heart.

Where Demons Reside" by Kara Macris concludes with a powerful moment that leaves you standing on the edge, just like Thomas Walker, torn between the darkness he’s meant to destroy and the humanity he’s struggling to protect. The final line encapsulates the book's essence—it’s not merely a tale of battling demons, but of confronting our inner struggles and moral dilemmas.

This story deeply resonated with me, reminding me of my own emotional conflicts. So often, we believe that life’s challenges can be divided into clear-cut lines of right and wrong, but as we grow, everything becomes more complicated. Thomas’s journey, full of vulnerability and compassion, felt incredibly relatable. His internal battle between his duty and his empathy hit close to home, showing how real the struggle between what’s expected of us and what feels right can be.

The bond between Thomas and Elijah stood out as a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected friendships arise in the darkest places. A demon and an exorcist coming together, not by destiny, but because they saw something deeply human in one another. It challenges the way we view people, suggesting that even those who seem like "monsters" may be carrying a part of goodness within them, just waiting to be understood.

What I loved most was the portrayal of the demons. Instead of being labeled as simply evil, they were shown as tortured souls. This added a refreshing depth to the story because it mirrors how often we oversimplify the emotions and struggles of others. Every soul, even one shrouded in darkness, deserves compassion. If you're looking for a story that will make you reflect, challenge your perceptions, and take you on a journey full of moral questions, this book is perfect. It’s more than just a read; it’s an emotional experience that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Kara Macris' captivating young adult fiction Where Demons Reside offers a novel and provocative interpretation of the traditional conflict between good and evil. When seventeen-year-old Thomas Walker discovers that his family has the sacred responsibility of exorcising demons, his entire life is upended. However, when he learns more about his new duty, he comes to see that demons are not the mindless wicked animals he was taught. Rather, they are tormented souls who are in dire need of deliverance.

Macris skillfully uses Thomas's internal turmoil to examine topics of morality, compassion, and obligation. He is caught between his family's long-standing duty to defend humanity and his developing realization that the animals he is supposed to annihilate are also victims. The plot gains depth with the appearance of Elijah Anderson, a demon with residual humanity. Elijah and Thomas form an odd partnership because Elijah is determined to save himself and others from damnation. This leads to a moral quandary that calls into question everything Thomas believed to be true.

At the core of the book is the relationship between Thomas and Elijah, which gives the story a special emotional depth. As the evil Prince of Demons draws nearer, their relationship serves as a ray of hope amidst the encroaching gloom. Because Thomas's rejection of his family's beliefs has serious repercussions and the possibility of losing himself to the very shadows he battles against, the novel's speed keeps readers interested.

Action, passion, and profound philosophical queries concerning atonement and the essence of evil are all skilfully woven together by Kara Macris. For readers who appreciate novels that subvert conventional ideas of good and evil while delivering suspense, magic, and emotion, Where Demons Reside is an engrossing and unique addition to the YA fantasy genre.

I had mixed feelings about this one; overall it was a really fun YA horror/urban fantasy read, dealing with demons and angels.

FYI, it’s worth googling who Archangel Michael is before reading - I have very little knowledge about Christianity (other than your basics, ie. Jesus and the donkey!) but he’s apparently a big deal in the bible and features in this story.

There were plenty of elements that I loved and some that I didn’t get on with so well!

What I loved:
- The premise was super interesting; a small town with a religious cult and demons roaming wild
- The magic system was so unique; ‘chants’ are bible verses that have magical power and are used to create powerful effects
- The characters were overall very sweet; I loved Lily, Elijah’s little sister!
- The action scenes were engaging and full of gore, which I loved!
- I like how it subverted the ‘fated soulmates’ trope in a really clever way.

What I wasn’t a fan of:
- I found the pacing a little off in places; I feel like we jumped around in time a lot and I wasn’t sure if events were taking place over the space of days or weeks.
- The creepy cult was severely underutilised!! I don’t wanna give spoilers, but I desperately wanted more of that insanity that drew me in at the start!
- Thomas’s mum infuriated me… she moved her kid to a whole new town, barely consulting him and giving him 3 days notice?? And then just left him with neighbours? Idk, not ideal parenting there.
- I wanted more details on the animal guides. Again, no spoilers, but I felt that this was a whole untapped storyline I would have loved to read!

So overall, a good YA read, especially if you’re a fan of the ‘soulmates’ trope, love urban fantasy with touches of horror!

Thanks to the author for giving me a free eARC of this book to review :)

What an absolute pleasure I had of reading this ARC provided by dearest Kara!

Kara Macris ‘Where Demons Reside offers an unfathomable ride—a ride that promises a blend of supernatural forces with human struggles, presenting a fresh take on the concept of exorcism. At the heart of the story is Thomas Walker, a hesitant teenager who has been compelled into the role of a demon exorcist. He grapples not only with otherworldly entities but also with his insecurities, making him a protagonist many can relate to despite the fantastical setting.

The story opens with a gripping prologue, immersing readers amid Thomas' panic attack in a bathroom stall. A mysterious figure offers him a calming mantra, introducing an enigmatic character who recurs throughout the novel. This encounter sets the tone for Thomas’ inner conflict: a struggle to reconcile his humanity with his newfound supernatural duties. Macris deftly illustrates Thomas' anxieties, making his fear palpable and relatable, even as the narrative ventures into the realm of magic and demons.

As the narrative progresses, Thomas faces his first exorcism. The ritual is depicted with vivid detail and intensity, from the unsettling ambience of the church to the grotesque depiction of the demon. Thomas’ hesitation and self-doubt add layers to the story, highlighting that not all heroes are eager or prepared for their destinies. The presence of other Principalities—seasoned exorcists who assist and critique Thomas—further complicates his journey, as their differing perspectives on exorcism and mercy shape his understanding of what it means to save someone truly.

The book “Where Demons Reside” by Kara Macris introduces us to a dark world marked by the battle between good and evil through Thomas Walker, a young man who never wanted to become an exorcist. This story shows that the choice to confront demons, whether real or internal, is not always conscious, but it is inevitable.

The story begins with Thomas encountering a mysterious figure in an empty bathroom, drawing him into a world of exorcisms and supernatural entities. Forced by his grandfather's legacy and the reincarnation of the Archangel Michael, Thomas becomes involved in the conflicts of obscure churches and interacts with enigmatic characters like Elijah. He discovers that he is the last *Principality*, a divine entity destined to fight demons, facing his own questions about identity and sacrifice as he develops his powers.

One of the central themes of the novel is the struggle between good and evil, both externally, through confrontations with demons and exorcisms, and internally, through the emotional battle of the characters to find a balance between duty and desire. The book also explores the theme of identity and inheritance, posing the question: how much of who we are is predestined, and how much is within our control?

“Where Demons Reside” is a captivating story about the demons that haunt both the outer world and the inner one. Kara Macris successfully builds a fascinating world filled with mystery and emotional conflict, where the lines between good and evil are always blurred. Through its complex themes and well-developed characters, the book offers a profound exploration of human nature and how we relate to destiny and free will.

### Book Review: Where Demons Reside by Kara Macris

When I read Kara Macris’ Where Demons Reside, I found myself captivated by its blend of supernatural horror, coming-of-age conflict, and philosophical questions. The story follows Thomas Walker, a teenager suddenly thrust into the dark world of demon exorcism. I couldn’t help but empathize with Thomas as he wrestled with anxiety, familial expectations, and the heavy burden of his newfound powers.

Macris’ depiction of Thomas felt so raw and relatable. As someone trying to balance self-doubt with a sense of duty, his journey struck a chord with me. His overbearing grandfather, enforcing rigid traditions, added another layer of complexity to the story. The vividly described exorcisms and eerie rituals transported me into the tense, shadowy world Macris so skillfully built. I was particularly intrigued by the mysterious trio pursuing Thomas, reflecting his guilt and growing disillusionment.

While some introspective moments slowed the pacing, I appreciated how these sections allowed me to connect deeply with Thomas’ inner turmoil. The balance between action-packed sequences and emotional depth made the narrative compelling from start to finish.

Where Demons Reside left me questioning the nature of good and evil, morality, and legacy. It’s a haunting and thought-provoking read, and I’m eager to see where Macris takes the series next.

My love of the MM romance genre began with a hyper-fixation on the television series Supernatural, and an obsession with reading Destiel fanfic. If you’re unfamiliar with that show, Angels and Demons are recurring themes.

After a while I gravitated away from fanfic and toward sports romance. It’s been a while since I’ve done any reading of the supernatural variety. I follow this author on Insta, though, and when she messaged me about this story, I was intrigued.

The premise is pretty interesting. Thomas is a demon exorcist. His grandpa tells him it’s his birthright and family duty to rid the world of demons. Elijah is a demon, but Thomas is not particularly interested in exorcising him.

As Thomas gets to know Elijah, he becomes more sure that demons are not as evil as they’ve been portrayed to be by his grandfather, and he develops a newfound determination to save Elijah and other demons as well.

There’s a lot going on here. The story is very imaginative and well-written. The world-building sometimes feels rushed, though. I think it really could have benefited from 100 or more additional pages. There were also a few elements that seemed somewhat unnecessary.

Ultimately, for a debut, this is done very well. I’d definitely read other offerings from this author, and if there were a sequel, I’d jump on the chance to revisit Thomas, Elijah and Lily.

Where Demons Reside by Kara Macris

3.75/5 Stars 🌟 *This will contain SPOILERS*

Firstly, thank you Kara for giving me the opportunity to read this book!

Secondly, I fought with this star ranking as I had so many feelings about this book and really wanted to love it based on its blurb, so I’m going to break them down now.

The characters were enjoyable, I enjoyed them and I got close to them and their individual stories but I personally think there was some predicability on what or who they’d be in the story before we actually found that out.

I found the grandpa to be an unneeded character after his death, I’m not sure we really needed him, like he just popped up in a church later on at one point to take a verbal beating from Thomas which I was proud to see him standing up for himself!

There were demons who popped up that felt like they should have been more but then we didn’t really hear about them again.

*secondary spoiler warning ⚠️ *

This was the hard part for me, I don’t understand how Thomas’ soul held all other souls?

I’m sorry I just didn’t understand as it really didn’t build up that he was some savour or gate keeper to these lost souls and I felt like archangel just showed up randomly to say this to him?

Overall, I enjoyed the book and I really think I would like to read it again in the future as a physical copy to make some physical notes to see if my opinion Changes , maybe you’d think differently? Please check out the book for yourselves 😊

Where Demons Reside by Kara Macris is a young adult LGBTQ paranormal love story that explores themes of honor, courage, and the murky space between good and evil. Seventeen-year-old Thomas Walker discovers that he’s a demon hunter, learning his family’s secret trade and facing the realization that the true darkness in the world isn’t always the demons he’s meant to fight. Elijah Anderson, a demon, becomes Thomas’s unexpected partner, challenging his assumptions about who—or what—defines “good.”

Macris creates an atmospheric world where the supernatural feels both eerie and intriguing, adding depth to Thomas’s journey. Her writing is vivid, capturing the tension and emotion of a world filled with moral ambiguity. Thomas and Elijah’s relationship unfolds with complexity, making them feel real and relatable as they struggle with choices that often lack clear solutions.

For readers who enjoy emotionally charged storytelling, this book’s fast pace and rollercoaster of twists are likely to keep you hooked until the final page. Macris’s work reminds me of Jonathan L. Ferrara’s The Ghost of Buxton Manor, with its nuanced take on the paranormal. This story’s unique characters, thought-provoking themes, and emotional pull make it a solid four-star read for me!.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Where do I begin...this book had me hooked from the very beginning! We start off with Thomas, a normal 17 year old boy who has it all: the most popular boy in school as his boyfriend with his two best friends in the city. During Thomas' breaks and weekends he hangs out with his grandfather - a stubborn old man who has placed a huge responsibility on Thomas' shoulders.

All Thomas wants is to have a normal life as a teenager but his grandfather ensures that it is anything but normal. Life exorcising demons is not for the faint of heart and Thomas gets queasy at the sight of blood.

That's when the Andersons step onto the stage. Specifically Elijah - a dark, brooding and mysterious boy with an even darker backstory.

I absolutely devoured this book. It is jam packed with one adventure after the next. Add in fated mates, forbidden love, and a good natured boy trying to find his place in his chaotic world - I was entranced. How @karamacris wrote this story and the love that Thomas and Elijah share is captivatingly beautiful yet innocent despite the darker elements of the story.

Thank you, thank you, thank you @karamacris for allowing me to read and review this incredible debut novel. I cannot wait to read what you write next! ♥

Where Demons Reside by Kara Macris was a story that instantly grabbed my attention, leaving me curious about the story. There were many points that seemed like they would tick my boxes, and I went in with high hopes.

I will be honest and say that my feelings toward Where Demons Reside quickly changed. It initially grabbed me, starting off strong by throwing the reader immediately into the story. There were many things I was eager to learn more about, to dive deeper into, and was excited to watch how things would develop. Unfortunately, as the story progressed, the pacing failed to work for me. There were some aspects that were over far too quickly and other aspects that were given more attention than was needed, which meant my interest was very inconsistent. I think a part of this linked in with the fact that this story was more young adult than I expected, meaning it did not quite have the level of depth and horror as I had initially anticipated. Due to this, I feel like most of my perspective came from the fact that I was not quite the right reader for this.

All in all, there was an interesting idea behind Where Demons Reside, yet it missed the mark for me. Most of my perspective, though, I feel is a case of ‘it is me, not the book’ as I was not the right reader.

Okay, see, it took me a little longer than planned to get this review out. Why? Because of the extreme whiplash it gave me. I wasn’t expecting to get that involved.

See, I’m very selective when it comes to coming of age/YA books. It’s hard for me to identify with the MC—identify as in ‘sympathize with their plights’—and their average-slash-mainstream characterization. I only go for them when the plot sounds compelling enough to balance out my personal preferences (this is a posh way to say, rejecting genres by default is something I don’t do; I’m here! Convince me!).

Where Demons Reside convinced me via its blurb first, and then via its overall execution. We have a dialogue-heavy book, written in third for the most part, with a flawless grammar and an excellent plot. Thomas is interesting, funny, complicated, tasked with a peculiar job (or is it fate?) and struggling with figuring out his life. Supporting characters? There’s a nice cast, in which his mother and his love interest stand out.

While I think that the first pov parts could have been handled in a different way, it’s undeniable that they’re well-written and add to the story. Macris is able to switch between the povs with grace and the usual getting-thrown-off a story doesn’t happen in here. All in all, a delightful read!
