KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.
Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.
A reimagining of Wonder Woman with a horror vibe. Yes, please.
A red-eyed sorceress, abandoned in Hell by the gods as punishment to the Amazons, and raised by Circe as her adoptive mother. Why has no one thought of this before? Because it's batshit, that's why!
Absolute Wonder Woman is everything I never knew I always wanted. Kelly Thompson really leaned into the magic side of Diana in her Justice League Dark best, and came up with a whole new origin for her. Still good, still strong, still out to save humanity. It's just that now she's riding a skeleton pegasus and spitting spells.
Wonder Woman reimagined....absolutely! A female author and nonbinary artist team up to create the most badass re-imagining of Wonder Woman's story. I will not stop gushing about her depiction as a completely powerful woman. She is all woman, and all power. One is not sacrificed for the other. I absolutely love her depiction.
Raised by a witch (Circe) in Hell She is the kindest most compassionate, and sacrificial character. She found love in the depths of Hell so it makes her all the more powerful and deep.
As a baby, the last Amazon was banished to Hell. Apollo hands the baby Diana to Circe and says it matters not whether she lives or dies, but she is to live the rest of her days in hell as punishment to all the Amazons. Apollo even banished the use of the word Amazon so that the sounds cannot come out of her mouth coherently when trying to say Amazon.
Circe of course falls in love with the amazing incredible wonder woman and teaches her the power of magic imbibed from the goddesses so that when Wonder Woman comes to save Humanity she can call on the power of Hecate with the original Pegasus.
Beautiful and stunning artwork by Hayden Sherman!!! I love Diana’s face as well as Circe and the background art is gorgeous !
The storytelling is also incredible, with Diana’s origin and childhood mixing with her present day battle, it all comes full circle at the end of this issue. Diana at her core is compassionate, she is the Wonder Woman I love yet reinvented in a way we rarely see her; magical. I can’t wait to see what else Kelly Thompson has in store for this run. I’m loving the Absolute series so far, I’m truly so excited!!!
I'm gonna say it now.... I liked Absolute Batman a lot. But I LOVED Absolute Wonder Woman. I'm not really a fan of Diana very much. I find Marvel super women to be more interesting (in my opinion), but when I saw that Kelly Thompson was writing this, I was 110% on board and damn Kelly did not disappoint. This book was filled with original/exciting moments that had me smiling from ear to ear with each turn of the page. What a unique spin on this character. I can't WAIT to see where this story ends up. Wow wow wow.
“How you fall in love with a child is by raising it.” That line and the sequence of Circe slowly raising Diana from baby to warrior alone earns this book a 5-star rating. The fact that that sequence is embedded in one of the most badass fight sequences I’ve seen in a comic this year earns this book a place on the perfect-issue shelf. It’s a great time to be a Wonder Woman fan.

Solid first issue. I loved the artwork and this new version of Diana is pretty cool. Again, they change things slightly but still keep to the character's traditions like in Absolute Batman which I do like.

Excelente introdução e proposta para a personagem dentro do universo Absolute. Arte boa, boa caracterização da Diana e bom uso das referências mitológicas.
É preciso mais desenvolvimento pra saber os próximos passos.
HOLY GREEK MYTHOLOGY I knew Wonder Woman is embedded with Greek mythology, but holy heck, the amount in this is incredible, 7 year old percy jackson fan Ivy is screaming right now. The complete reversal of stories and characters in this is such a bold choice, but 100% the right choice. Diana being banned from Themyscira and being brought up in hell instead of paradise might be my favourite take like ever. It's executed so well because it also depends on the complete change of Circe as a character and myth. The usual anticipated villainous, feared sorceress, antagonist Circe, who turns men into animals, is forced to be a maternal figure and is seen in a completely juxtaposed light to her usual ideals. She's lowkey still a man hater, but i can get behind that. It does so much justice to make Circe not completely evil and shows her as a woman, which helps form a younger Diana into this epitome of divine femininity. I really enjoyed the narrative voice of Circe over Diana's childhood and the constant flashbacks in times of need and reassurance. Diana is presented so well, as she should be; my favourite panel might actually be her towering over the commander when he's trying to stop her. Love to see a patriarchal role reversal. To me, Wonder Woman is meant to be presented as a badass who is independent, fending for herself, and she is exactly what I want to be when i grow up. The plot with Steve is so compelling to see her save him out of honour and cut off her arm ??? sorry im not doing that for any man. Big respect there, Diana, but then to see him save her as Medusa when he is the only one who can, UGH YES, their bond and storyline of him being in hell with her perfectly makes for a build until the Medusa moment. Circe, making her lasso of transformation, creates an even closer bond between her and her adoptive mother. I was absolutely jumping up and down, screaming when Persephone mentioned the pomegranate. I was like NO NO NO the foreshadowing went crazy- having the pre knowledge of the Greek myths embedded into this made the reading experience so much better- I loved the integration of so many different Greek gods/godesses and I hope it continues. This is my first absolute superhero one, unsure how any other ones are going to beat this, genuinely one of my favourite comics ever. It is also so visually stunning, especially the Lady or the Tiger art. CANNOT WAIT FOR ZATANNA. highly highly reccomend this. I will be asking everyone I know 'have you read Absolute Wonder Woman?????? read it now .'

This introduction felt almost perfectly paced and balanced in every way. It goes back and forth between it’s spectacular action and it’s quaint backstory so well. I really like the setup of the “nature vs nurture” theme in this story and how the two concepts can coexist for Diana just as much as they can clash. Making those aspects of herself work together feels very faithful to Diana and I love it. The art was stellar with some of the best pages in a book I’ve seen in a minute. Unfortunately the dramatic moments didn't work as well for me. I could really feel that missing poetry and grandeur in the interactions with the gods the speech felt a little too pedestrian, the pacing a little too immediate to establish the stakes. And as a consequence of that, Diana's big revelation about her heritage didn't really land for me. It felt weightless. I don't know if future issues are going to do it for me like this one did. The things that worked feel pretty specific to one type of exposition. Maybe with more time there'll be a better sense of the stakes, but I found myself wishing we were spending more time in hell and less time actually following the action. Still, I'm definitely excited to see where it goes and I look forward to eating up more of that incredible artwork.
I was prepared to spend the next few weeks slowly digging into Absolute Wonder Woman, but booooooy did that not happen. I TORE through this series like a madman. I’m a pretty slow reader, but I finished all 11 issues in like 2 hours. And now what am I supposed to do with myself???
Like, I just couldn’t get enough, it is just that good. Incredible art, incredible story, incredible character work, incredible everything. This is just the perfect comic for someone (me) who loves Greek/Roman mythology and the epicness of Wonder Woman. Like who doesn’t want to see this new insanely shredded version of Diana ride into battle on Pegasus with her GIANT sword to take down foes like Hades, a hydra, and a Tetracide? I know I do. 1000000/10 would recommend.
My only critique is that Diana still doesn’t have a girlfriend. She has a red ink sleeve and wears black lipstick for goodness sake. WW IS GAY YOU COWARDS!
Kelly Thompson kicks off Absolute Wonder Woman in fine fashion, but I wish it were a bit meatier, plot-wise. We get a dual narrative here, with an alien invasion taking place in the present-date and the fight scenes interspersed with this new, alternate-universe Diana's origin story as an infant raised in Hell. Diana is the last of the Amazons, and she's been entrusted to the captive Circe to raise her. It's a neat hook, and one that raises lots of questions. This issue ultimately feels too short, but it has enough going for it to keep me invested and curious to see where the second installment takes us. Besides, a beefy, tattooed Wonder Woman sporting an absolutely massive broadsword and racing into action on the back of a skeletal pegasus? All I can say to that is, oh, fuck yes, more, please and thank you. Yeah, I'm sticking around for this series for a bit longer.
Pretty good and an interesting new origin for Wonder Woman.
Being raised in Hell is a fun new change to her mythos.
I thought it showed promise but, as with Absolute Batman, I'll wait and see if it delivers on said promises.
I thought it didn't give us much in terms of plot but it set up her origin well and succinctly. I really enjoyed Circe's journey of becoming a mother. Very cute and wholesome, despite being set in Hell.
The art by Hayden Sherman was very good and I love Wonder Woman's new darker more hellish design, wonderful stuff!
I'll probably check out all the Absolute DC comics to start with and whether or not they are good in the long run will determine my more detailed thoughts on the Absolute DC runs and each story in and of itself.
“The princess has all the gifts any princess could hope to have. Beauty. Grace. Compassion. Kindness. Wisdom. The ability to outrun a hellhound and conjure the darkest of magicks. Things every princess needs…when she was raised in hell.”
I don't know what it is about Wonder Woman that makes me so emotional but IMO this is the best of the 'Absolute' line and a powerhouse comic from Kelly Thompson. The art by Hayden Sherman and colors by Jordie Bellaire are stunning as well
