Calla Moretti married her college sweetheart, Bill. Married life was great at first, but as his career had her dropping out of college and moving away from her family and friends, Calla struggled with her role as a wife and homemaker. Stress, due to infertility and Bill’s affairs, had the marriage on the brink of failure. When she drives home in the middle of a thunderstorm and spots first a broken down motorcycle, then the sexy rider, she decides to take a chance and offer him assistance. Realizing fate brought her together with a man who could give her the one thing her husband couldn’t—a baby—Calla decides to take a chance. One romantic night, one big lie, will it save her marriage or fill her heart with more emptiness? Will this be the answer to her prayers? In life, are there truly second chances?
NJ Cole is a witty, mid-western girl with a kinky side. She works by day and writes by night, all while being a mother to her wonderful boys and serving her Sir. Unlike many of today’s authors, she chooses to write in first person, allowing the readers to experience life through the eyes of the unique characters that live in her head. Her love of those characters and respect for their stories come through loud and clear in her writing. With over two million reads of her online work in the past six months, NJ Cole is clearly an up and coming author.
I read Second Chances after reading Landslide, so I may be rating this harsher than I would normally. I actually really enjoyed this story.
Calla is the girl that does everything she is supposed to do. She met her husband in college, while he was attending the police academy. When he graduated the academy, she moved with him. It made sense for her to quit school, so she did. He wanted her to be a homemaker, so she did. He wanted to focus on having kids, so she did. The problem came about when found herself not getting pregnant. Month after month of trying and Calla wasn't getting pregnant. She wasn't in school. She wasn't working and she wasn't happy. When she discovered Bill was being unfaithful, the bad marriage got worse and Calla left. Of course, Bill apologized and she went home. He promised to come home for lunch everyday, go to marriage counseling and go to the doctor to see why they weren't getting pregnant. They found out that Bill's swimmers weren't working right, but he refused to try alternative methods of conceiving. It also didn't take long before Bill failed to keep his other promises too. When Calla tries to plan a romantic weekend on Bill's long weekend off, she is disappointed to find out that he has to work. She visits her family instead and her sister convinces her to try an ovulation kit to track when she is ovulating. Guess what she finds? She's ovulating now! Maybe if she rushes home, she can convince Bill to take a break, come home for a quickie or something else to make a baby.
It's during that trip home that it starts pouring and she discovers a broken down motorcycle with a guy walking to the next town drenched. Calla knows she shouldn't pull over to help a stranger, but she does anyway. The sparks between these 2 strangers are off the charts. Our mysterious man offers to buy Calla dinner and gets a room at a motel. It's too late for a tow truck to fix his bike.
Calla soon realizes that she can have sex with this stranger, get pregnant and pass the baby off as Bill's. This should fix her marital problems. The problem? The mysterious stranger says things to her that warm her heart. He makes her feel things that she's never felt before and he makes love to her the way Bill never has. When Calla makes up the next morning, she leaves the stranger with nothing but an a note signed with her initial. They never even exchanged names.
Jayce woke up from his encounter with the beautiful stranger and panics when she's gone. As a police officer, he should have paid more attention to details. Now he knows he wants more, but he has no idea how to find her.
Calla comes home and discovers that her home life isn't something she wants anymore. Shortly after, she also discovers that she did get pregnant with her mysterious stranger.
Will Jayce and Calla find eachother and get a second chance?
I can tell you exactly how I feel about this book in a few short sentences. Bill represents everything every woman hates about men. Calla is that naive girl that you just shake your head at, but I was pleased to see her standing tall at the end. Jayce was everything any girl wants in a guy. The whole mysterious stranger, man searching for you thing is just sweet and heartwarming. While the sex was hot in this book, the feelings took the center stage. I could call this a feel good book especially for friends going through a breakup or divorce.

the only reason why I give this story this 4⭐rating is because the story is to short where as calla's second change is concerns. There should have been written about her second chance. calla went through so many trails and tribulations with her husband. there were times that I felt that climbing through my tablet to smack her behind her head to wake up. oh my gosh her mother I would like to hit her with a fist. then karma stepped in on her way to her home on the open road and and all of a sudden there is a mother of a big storm that's catching up to her. in the midst of the storm on the side way of the road she saw an abandoned motorbike. now the story is starting to to unfold. I'm not going to tell you the story. this is a must read book electricity, sparks, action packed, steamy, real page turner, great word building, romantic, witty remarks, humour, tears, easy flowing text, with a guaranteed happy ever after.
I've enjoyed this book, it strongly reminded me of a song from the group Heart from the 1990's . As I've read the book I kept imagining this song and the story was the perfect fit to that song, obviously with a couple change. Calla, the heroine, ends up picking a man, Jacye, walking during a rain storm and they end up in a hotel room and have an amazing night of passion, where she conceive a child. Unlike the song, she then returns home to find her deadbeat cheating husband and kicks him out that same day, deciding to taking her life in her own hands. The second part of the book is told from Jayces POV and of all that he has done in order to search for his mystery woman.
Long and short of it a great little short book that is. Perfect read for a rainy day
This was a delightful story where two lonely people were thrown together by circumstances and developed a deep attachment and affection for each other. Both Calla and Jayce found their lives hollow and were ready for a drastic change. Their separation and reunion made for a very heartfelt and enjoyable story. !!!!
second chances........we all deserve them if needed some more than others.... this is a great little read by nj cole don't want to go into detail and spoil the story, it is based around calla and bill with a few up and downs ins and outs you will love it
This is truly a fictional story, yet it's a nice alternative to a very bad situation. Two wrongs is still a wrong and bring naive and desperate don't make you right either. Truly karma is a fickle and narcacisst entity.
This could have been a really good book but I don't like cheaters. So I had to give it a 3 star rating. If you don't mind cheaters you will like this book.
i have to say I feel like I died and went to heaven with each of NJ Cole's books! Calla was a strong character that put up with crap from her cheating husband Bill. But then fate brings a mystery man to her one rainy night when she is headed home. They don't know each other but the sparks fly and they make love numerous times without protection. Calla thinks if she is pregnant it will heal her marriage. But reality sets in when she finds her husband in bed with another woman. She throws him out and files for divorce. Never realizing Jayce has been looking for her for 7 months. By accident they find each other and it is like they were never apart. The rest you will have to read! This author makes me smile with each book. I have now read all her books and can't wait for the next one!
This was my first book by N J Cole and without a doubt it will NOT be my last! Second Chances was a short story and quick to breeze through because frome the very first page you will be sucked in and not want to put it down! Carra is a woman of strong will who ends up being the wife of a cheating small town sheriff. But everything changes for her in one amazing night! 5 stars!!
Second Chances by NJ Cole was a good quick read. Calla is a woman who married her college sweetheart. Things were great until life changed everything. She hasn't been able to conceive and she found out her husband was having affairs. Her life changed when she found a sexy motorcycle rider in the middle of the night. This was a god story about second chances at love, even when you don't think you can have it again.
I loved this story! I felt drawn into it from the beginning. Calla and Jayce are so touching and the sparks between the two fly off of the pages. I found myself hoping that second chances can happen for them. I wish this story was longer and explored their relationship more. I will never look at a motorcycle on the side of the road during a rainstorm again!
Such a great short story! I love second chance stories and this certainly didn't let me down. Even with all the obstacles they had, it was a sweet story!
This one was a quick, short read. I tried not to make any judgments in the characters' actions as I read this story. Of course, there's a HEA. Thankfully, it's just fiction.
I have to say I totally loved this book!! Calla was good. She did the right thing and sacrificed her wants for other people. She gave up school for her husband so he could head a local police department. The rotten thing though, no one gave up anything for her. That husband, the scum sucking snake, blamed Calla for everything and anything that went wrong. Especially his shortcomings! She finally had enough of his bs and made her move. It was the best thing she could have done because Karma is at the door serving up double scoops!!! Awesome book!!!
