About the author

A master of poetry, drama, and the novel, German writer and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent 50 years on his two-part dramatic poem Faust , published in 1808 and 1832, also conducted scientific research in various fields, notably botany, and held several governmental positions.

George Eliot called him "Germany's greatest man of letters... and the last true polymath to walk the earth." Works span the fields of literature, theology, and humanism.
People laud this magnum opus as one of the peaks of world literature. Other well-known literary works include his numerous poems, the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther .

With this key figure of German literature, the movement of Weimar classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries coincided with Enlightenment, sentimentality (Empfindsamkeit), Sturm und Drang, and Romanticism. The author of the scientific text Theory of Colours , he influenced Darwin with his focus on plant morphology. He also long served as the privy councilor ("Geheimrat") of the duchy of Weimar.

Goethe took great interest in the literatures of England, France, Italy, classical Greece, Persia, and Arabia and originated the concept of Weltliteratur ("world literature"). Despite his major, virtually immeasurable influence on German philosophy especially on the generation of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling, he expressly and decidedly refrained from practicing philosophy in the rarefied sense.

Influence spread across Europe, and for the next century, his works inspired much music, drama, poetry and philosophy. Many persons consider Goethe the most important writer in the German language and one of the most important thinkers in western culture as well. Early in his career, however, he wondered about painting, perhaps his true vocation; late in his life, he expressed the expectation that people ultimately would remember his work in optics.

Without doubt, this is a Titan's Work, but at the same time it is deficient, in that it is not entirely coherent: it was written in different periodes of Goethe's life, in different styles, from different perspectives; it's intersected with rather loose comments on the culture of his time. It has a mosaic-like structure with symbolic scenes and sometimes downright spectacles full of special effects.

Of course, there is the impressive and essentially tragic figure of Faust himself, the man who succumbs to his desire to know more, to be more, a symbol of the human passion to surpass himself. In that way Goethe has made Faust into the iconic symbol he has remained ever since.

I read most of it in German, accompanied by a Dutch translation. To me real gems were the following parts: the Walpurgisnacht (a cascade of images and scenes in variegated verse forms), the Homunculus story (sparkling and moving), the Philemon and Baucis story (charming as ever). And rather weak parts: the Gretchen story (Gretchen is a too insignificant figure), the Helena Story (she's literally without flesh and bone), Euphorion (too short), and the final (too heavenly).
Faust is a succinct read, but too precarious to my taste. Still, several verses have been imprinted in my mind for ever.

Ολοκληρώνοντας τον «Φάουστ» του Γκαίτε, αυτό που μπορώ να καταθέσω ως το μέγα διακύβευμα της ανάγνωσής του είναι – κι ας ακουστεί παράξενο- η δυνατότητα μετάφρασης. Ειδικότερα δε, της διερεύνησης του κατά πόσον αυτή μπορεί να αποδώσει το πρωτότυπο κείμενο. Και ως παρεπόμενο βήμα, θα ήταν αδύνατο να μην αναφερθώ στη σθεναρή αντίσταση ενός πολυδαίδαλου κειμένου στις πλάγιες ματιές και τη διαγώνια ανάγνωση ενός σύγχρονου κοινού εθισμένου σε άλλου είδους παραστάσεις. Ας ξεκινήσω όμως από το ίδιο το έργο, προτού περάσω στα υπόλοιπα.

Ο «Φάουστ» αποτελείται από 2 μέρη (συνολικά 12.111 στίχοι), με το 2ο -και πιο απαιτητικό- μέρος να χωρίζεται σε 5 πράξεις. Τα dramatis personae είναι πλέον γνωστά, μιας και το πέρασμα των αιώνων και οι αμέτρητες αναφορές τούς προσέδωσαν μυθικές διαστάσεις: Ο πανεπιστήμων Φάουστ, ο Μεφιστοφελής-Σατανάς, η αθώα Μαργαρίτα, μαθητές, βοηθοί, ποιητές και παρατρεχάμενοι, μυθικά πρόσωπα όπως η ωραία Ελένη και άλλοι ομηρικοί ήρωες, τέρατα, βιβλικές μορφές και, καθόλου απρόσμενα, ο Θεός με τους αγγέλους. Ο αναγνώστης παρακολουθεί από τις εναρκτήριες σκηνές το στοίχημα μεταξύ του Θεού και Μεφιστοφελή με έπαθλο την ψυχή του σεβάσμιου Δρ. Φάουστ. Εν συνεχεία, την κάθοδο του Μεφιστοφελή στη Γη, την επαφή του με τον Φάουστ και την κοινή πορεία τους στον χώρο και τον χρόνο, καθώς ο πρώτος υπόσχεται να ικανοποιήσει καθεμιά επιθυμία του δεύτερου, με τίμημα την αθάνατη ψυχή του - έως το τέλος, με τον υπερήλικα πλέον Φάουστ να αποδίδει τα οφειλόμενα.

Έργο τιτάνιο του Γερμανού ποιητή, ο οποίος διέπραξε, θαρρείς, το ίδιο έγκλημα με τον ήρωά του, προκειμένου να φέρει εις πέρας τον Φάουστ κατά τη διάρκεια της ζωής του: Επιστρέφοντας σε τακτά διαστήματα, προσθέτοντας στίχους, πράξεις, οικοδομώντας, εμπλουτίζοντας το ήδη υπάρχον. Περιφρονώντας τον χρόνο, τον ίδιο εκείνο χρόνο που μέρα τη μέρα τον έσπρωχνε προς το αναπόφευκτο. Κάθε του στίχος και μια άρνηση, κάθε πράξη μια κραυγή ελευθερίας του Ανθρώπου που κοιτάζει με πάθος και απόγνωση το τέλος του, και εξίσου παθιασμένα και ανέλπιδα δεν παραδίδει την πένα του (το μόνο του όπλο ενάντια στο κενό) παρά μόνο όταν έχει γράψει στο τέλος το οριστικό «Finis».

Οι μυημένοι στα περί έμμετρης ποίησης-δράματος, θα μπορούν να αναγνωρίσουν και προφανώς να απολαύσουν πληρέστερα τις συνεχείς εναλλαγές μέτρου, το ιδιοφυές και ανεπανάληπτο παιχνίδι του Γκαίτε με τους στίχους. Ο μέγας δραματουργός έχει εντρυφήσει στο αρχαίο ελληνικό θέατρο: στο τραγικό (Ευριπίδης), το κωμικό (Αριστοφάνης) και το σατιρικό δράμα. Εν συνεχεία βεβαίως διαπερνά δημιουργικά το σαιξπηρικό corpus, κορφολογώντας κι από τον μεγάλο Άγγλο δραματουργό εικόνες, ονόματα, καταστάσεις, ιδέες, ρίχνοντάς τες στο μεγάλο τσουκάλι του ποιητικού του οράματος, ενώ δεν λείπουν συνεχείς αναφορές στα βιβλικά κείμενα και σε μουσικά είδη όπως η όπερα.

Η μαγεία της τέχνης του Γκαίτε συμπυκνώνεται ακριβώς σ’ αυτό το περίτεχνο αμάλγαμα, καθώς τα επιμέρους ουδόλως ξεχωρίζουν, ενώ ταυτόχρονα άπαντα τα εναντιόμορφα αλληλο-περιχωρούνται αρμονικά. Ο αναγνώστης θα απολαύσει το πώς ο ποιητής μεταπηδά απρόσκοπτα από το κωμικό στο δραματικό, από το μεσαιωνικό στο νεωτερικό και πίσω στο αρχαϊκό, με ταυτόχρονη χρήση υφολογικών μέσων που συνάδουν με την καθεμιά εποχή. Το μέτρο παρακολουθεί τη θεματική, ορίζεται από εκείνην και με τη σειρά του την περικλείει δημιουργικά. Άξιο θαυμασμού παραμένει το πώς ο Γκαίτε, ως άλλος Ήφαιστος, τοποθετεί στο αμόνι του θεωρητικά ετερόκλιτα είδη και τα σφυρηλατεί έως ότου αποκτήσουν την όψη εκείνη που ταιριάζει στο όραμά του. Μορφολογικά στοιχεία, μετρικές ακροβασίες, εναλλαγές ύφους, συγκλίνουν, χωρίς να απεκδύονται ουδόλως τη μοναδικότητά τους.
Επιπρόσθετα, οι βασικές θεματικές, όπως το προσωπικό (κωμικό-σατιρικό) και το οικουμενικό στοιχείο (τραγικό), η αναζήτηση του κάλλους, του πλούτου, του έρωτα, το θρησκευτικό συναίσθημα και η άρνησή του μέσω της παρουσίας του Μεφιστοφελή, ο πειρασμός, η τιμωρία και στο τέλος η λύτρωση, αποδίδονται μεγαλειωδώς, με την απαράμιλλη χρήση των κατάλληλων για την περίσταση εκφραστικών μέσων.

Είναι αντικειμενικά αδύνατον να εκθέσω στο πλαίσιο μιας μικρής παρουσίασης όλα εκείνα τα σημεία στα οποία το πνεύμα του αναγνώστη στέκεται ενεό, επαναλαμβάνοντας στίχους και στροφές, προσαρμόζοντας τους εγκεφαλικούς του κάλυκες στο μέτρο και τον ρυθμό. Και στη συνέχεια απολαμβάνοντας την επίγευση που προσφέρει η σταδιακή αφομοίωση όσων διάβασε και κατανόησε, έστω αποσπασματικά, ορεγόμενος τη συνέχεια. Και ας είναι εκ των πραγμάτων αδύνατον όλα τα μέρη, οι πράξεις να παρουσιάζουν το ίδιο ενδιαφέρον, καθότι ο χρόνος μπορεί να μην έριξε τη σκιά του στο ίδιο το έργο, πλην όμως ο σύγχρονος αναγνώστης βιώνει το παρόν και θεάται το παρελθόν μέσω της πεπερασμένης οπτικής και αισθητικής του.

Ένα από τα ενδιαφέροντα σημεία, ιδίως για τον Έλληνα αναγνώστη, αποτελεί η πρόδηλη παρουσία του κεντροευρωπαϊκού μυστικιστικού στοιχείου, με χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα τη «Νύχτα της Βαλπούργης» στο 1ο μέρος (τη λεγόμενη και «Βόρεια»), όπως αποδίδεται με την παρουσία παραφυσικών φαινομένων, πλασμάτων της νύχτας (Μάγισσες, Μάγοι, μαύρη μαγεία και κάθε λογής τέρατα). Το μεσαιωνικό-αναγεννησιακό στοιχείο διατρανώνει την παρουσία του, καθώς σύμφωνα με τα λεγόμενα του ίδιου του Γκαίτε πρόκειται για τη «Μοναρχική» νύχτα, η οποία μετουσιώνεται σε στίχους, αναδεικνύοντας τη ζείδωρη κληρονομιά του Δάντη και του Σαίξπηρ. Στον αντίποδα, αν και αντιστικτικά, στο 2ο μέρος και 2η Πράξη, η «Κλασική νύχτα της Βαλπούργης», (κατά τα λεγόμενά του η «Ρεπουμπλικανική») φέρνει στο προσκήνιο την κλασική αρχαιότητα, το Αρχαίο Δράμα και την Αττική Κωμωδία, έμπλεα μεσογειακού φωτός. Οι πρωταγωνιστές κινούνται αδιάλειπτα, ο χρόνος και ο χώρος τούς παρακολουθεί στην πορεία τους, καθώς ο Γκαίτε συνομιλεί στιχουργικά με το παρόν και το παρελθόν, έχοντας στραμμένο το βλέμμα στο μέλλον.

Ο Μεφιστοφελής προσφέρει, ο Φάουστ δέχεται. Ο ένας έχει εκπέσει της χάριτος, ο άλλος είναι δυνάμει σωσμένος (η θεϊκή φύση του ανθρώπου), κι όμως ταυτόχρονα αλυσοδεμένος στο άρμα των παθών του που αποτελούν άρνηση της σωτηρίας αυτής. Ο Μεφιστοφελής δεν μπορεί να κερδίσει πίσω αυτό που έχασε με την πτώση. Μπορεί όμως να αποδείξει τη δύναμή του οδηγώντας το δημιούργημα του μεγάλου του Αντιπάλου κοντά του. Το στοίχημα μεταξύ Θεού και Σατανά φαίνεται εξαρχής χαμένο για τον άνθρωπο Φάουστ, καθώς δεν υπάρχει κανένα όριο σε εκείνα που ονειρεύεται και ποθεί. Η ανεξέλεγκτη φαντασία είναι αφ’ εαυτήν στασιαστική, ένα πυρακτωμένο αγχέμαχο όπλο που κόβει τον ομφάλιο λώρο μεταξύ Θεού και ανθρώπου. Ο Μέγας Αρνητής το γνωρίζει αυτό και διόλου τυχαία ρίχνει συνεχώς καύσιμο στην πυρά των επιθυμιών του Φάουστ. Κι εκείνος φλέγεται απολαμβάνοντας την πτώση του. Από την ταπεινή χωριατοπούλα Μαργαρίτα που πέφτει θύμα της γοητείας του, έως τη μυθική Ελένη του Ομήρου, η απόσταση δεν είναι τόσο μεγάλη. Ο κατακτητής περιφέρεται εν μέσω εποχών και ανθρώπων, αφήνοντας πίσω του συντρίμμια ανθρώπινα και μη. Ο φόνος, το ψεύδος, η κολακεία, κάθε είδους αμάρτημα συνοδεύει τον πρωταγωνιστή, ο οποίος δεν ορρωδεί προ ουδενός. Και υπέρτερο όλων η εξουσία, η οποία εδραιώνεται μέσω του πολέμου, μια ηδονή που ο Φάουστ θα τη γευτεί δίχως έλεος. Έσχατος στόχος, η απόλυτη απόλαυση, η απόλυτη ικανοποίηση, η οποία όταν επέλθει -σύμφωνα πάντα με τους όρους της συμφωνίας - θα σημάνει και το τέλος του ήρωα, οπότε θα παραδώσει την αθάνατη ψυχή του στον Μεφιστοφελή.

Είναι όμως η μοναξιά εκείνη που θα κερδίσει τον ήρωα, που θα τον απομονώσει από τους πάντες, οδηγώντας τον στην πιο ανθρώπινη εκδοχή του. Όταν όλα θα έχουν χαθεί από το προσκήνιο ως οράματα (καθόλου τυχαία η χρήση από τον Μεφιστοφελή κάθε είδους καθρεφτών, συσκευών φασματικών, ονειρικών) εκείνο που μένει είναι η ενάργεια μιας διαφορετικής ευτυχίας, μιας άλλης ηδονής – όχι εκείνης της πρώιμης, της σαρκικής που με τόσο κόπο επιχείρησε να επιβάλλει στον Φάουστ ο Μεφιστοφελής και τόσο αχόρταγα εκείνος αναζήτησε ακόμα και στην κλασική αρχαιότητα με τη μορφή της ωραίας Ελένης. Η νεότητα παραδίδει τα σκήπτρα της στο γήρας, με τον ώριμο πλέον Φάουστ να επιζητά την ασφαλή από τα βέλη του χρόνου ηδονή που προέρχεται από τα έργα του ανθρώπου: «Λεύτερος με λεύτερο λαό να περπατάω.»

Η επίγευση των ηδονών που λάθρα και με δόλιο τρόπο αποκτήθηκαν είναι χθόνια, μάταιη και πρόσκαιρη. Ως γνήσιο τέκνο της εποχής του, ο Γκαίτε με όχημά του τον Φάουστ θα ονειρευτεί τη λαμπρή άνοδο και κυριαρχία μιας προελαύνουσας επαναστατικής αστικής τάξης που τα έργα της θα μεταμορφώσουν τον κόσμο, μέσω της άοκνης σπουδής και εργασίας της, παραμένοντα στους αιώνες. Κι εκείνη ακριβώς τη στιγμής της υπέρτατης ευτυχίας, ο Φάουστ, υπερήλικας πλέον, θα απολαύσει την επίγνωση που όμως θα τον οδηγήσει στον τάφο. Οι δείκτες του ρολογιού θα σταματήσουν. Το στοίχημα έχει τυπικά χαθεί, πλην όμως ουσιαστικά κερδηθεί.

Φευ, ο Μεφιστοφελής δεν θα απολαύσει τη νίκη του. Η νίκη του πύρρειος, καθότι προσωρινή. Θα ειρωνευτεί πολύ σωστά άπαντα τα ανθρώπινα έργα, ως κτίσματα επί της άμμου, και εκείνο το «Τετέλεσται. Τι λέξη ηλιθία!» που θα απαγγείλει, συνεχίζει να μας σαρκάζει με τη νιχιλιστική του ακρίβεια. Το αιώνιο κενό που καθιστά ό,τι προηγήθηκε ασήμαντο κι ό,τι έπεται αμφίβολης αξίας, ρίχνει βαριά τη σκιά του στα πεπραγμένα. Εντούτοις, ο Γκαίτε παραμένει παιδί των καιρών του και δεν αφήνει τον ζόφο να κατακλύσει το έργο του. Εξάλλου κάτι τέτοιο θα ήταν παράταιρο και αντίθετο με το πνεύμα του δημιουργού του. Η θεϊκή παρέμβαση θα στερήσει το τρόπαιο από τον Μεφιστοφελή και οι στρατιές των αγγέλων θα μεταφέρουν την αθάνατη ψυχή του Φάουστ εκεί που εξαρχής ήταν προδιαγεγραμμένο. Ο Μεφιστοφελής θα διαμαρτυρηθεί για το στημένο αποτέλεσμα, αλλά δίχως αποτέλεσμα. Το Καλό θα επικρατήσει. Vae victis.


Περί κατανόησης

Είναι μήπως ο «Φάουστ» ένα ακόμα έργο μη προσβάσιμο στον αναγνώστη, αδύνατον να διαβαστεί; Σίγουρα το έμμετρο κείμενο δεν δικαιολογεί επιπόλαιες προσεγγίσεις, εκπαραθυρώνοντας τους… ταχυφάγους αναγνώστες. Για να το θέσω ποιητικά, τα κλαδιά του δέντρου αυτού δεν προσφέρονται για αποδημητικά πουλιά που αναζητούν βραχεία παραμονή. Ο Πέτρος Μάρκαρης που έχει αναλάβει τη μετάφραση, στο απαραίτητο εισαγωγικό σημείωμα, προσφέρει ορισμένα κλειδιά κατανόησης, ιδίως όσον αφορά τις αρχικές πηγές, τις οποίες ο Γκαίτε συνέλεξε, επέλεξε και χρησιμοποίησε κατά τη διάρκεια της συγγραφής ενός έργου που διήρκησε σχεδόν 6 δεκαετίες!

Ο φέρελπις αναγνώστης οφείλει να λάβει σοβαρά υπόψη του την εγνωσμένη νοηματική πυκνότητα, την πανταχού παρούσα διακειμενικότητα, την εμβρίθεια και τον άφατο γλωσσικό πλούτο ενός κειμένου που οι ρίζες του βυθίζονται στο ζείδωρο έδαφος της αρχαίας ελληνικής γραμματείας, ο κορμός του αποτελείται από πολλαπλά στρώματα της λατινικής και μεσαιωνικής, καταλήγοντας στα κλαδιά της συγκαιρινής του συγγραφέα πνευματικής παραγωγής (έστω επικριτικά). Και να προσθέσει σ’ αυτά, τα άνθη και τους καρπούς από τις εικαστικές τέχνες, ιδίως εκείνη της ζωγραφικής, όπως και της μουσικής.
Ο αναγνώστης που θα προχωρήσει θαρραλέα πλην ανεπίγνωστα προς το δέντρο αυτό με το τσεκούρι της βεβαιότητας ανά χείρας, είναι πιθανό να απογοητευτεί. Εξαρχής το δέντρο θα αντισταθεί στις προσπάθειες υλοτόμησής του, ακόμα και όταν επιχειρήσει να κινηθεί πονηρά, ξεκινώντας από τα κλαδιά - το αποτέλεσμα θα τον αποσυντονίσει. Οι ρίζες, ο κορμός και τα κλαδιά αποτελούν ένα ενιαίο σύνολο, με τους χυμούς της ποιητικής πνοής να το διατρέχουν από άκρο σε άκρο. Τίποτα δεν είναι περιττό, όλα είναι απαραίτητα.

Παρουσιάζει δε ο Φάουστ το εξής παράδοξο: Κάποιες πράξεις πέρασαν από μπροστά μου ως αραχνοΰφαντο πέπλο, ακραγγίζοντας τη διάνοιά μου, δίχως να προσφέρουν κάτι περισσότερο από το χαμόγελο μιας ευδίας ημέρας. Την ίδια στιγμή υπήρξαν στροφές ή μεμονωμένοι στίχοι που ένιωσα να με συνταράζουν, να μετακινούν τις τεκτονικές πλάκες εντός μου, αναγκάζοντάς με να επιστρέψω εκ νέου, διαλέγοντας ξεχωριστά κάθε λέξη, κρατώντας τες για ώρα στον ουρανίσκο ως είδος σπάνιου κρασιού. Δεν τρέφω αυταπάτες περί κατανόησης του έργου εν συνόλω, καθότι απαιτείται αντίστοιχη του κειμένου παιδεία μα και επανάγνωση. Βγήκα όμως πνευματικά κερδισμένος από τη διαδικασία της πρώτης αυτής ανάγνωσης: κοντοστάθηκα, ως ταπεινός παρατηρητής, δίπλα στο σημείο που πανέμορφα ουράνια πλάσματα κατεβαίνουν από το ολύμπιο ύψος τους να ξεδιψάσουν. Θαύμασα το κάλλος τους, και όταν ξεδίψασαν και επέστρεψαν στην κατοικία τους, πήρα κι εγώ το δρόμο της επιστροφής στην πραγματικότητα, πάντα ο ίδιος, αλλά ταυτόχρονα κάπως διαφορετικός.


Περί σημειώσεων, μετάφρασης κι απόδοσης

Ο Στάινερ συνήθιζε να ψέγει, εμμέσως πλην σαφώς, το σύγχρονο κοινό το οποίο όποτε επιχειρεί να προσεγγίσει κείμενα του είδους αυτού, βασίζεται σχεδόν εξ ολοκλήρου στα «ξυλοπόδαρα των σημειώσεων». Μετά λύπης του παρατηρούσε ότι οι πλείστες όσες αναφορές στα ελληνικά, λατινικά ή βιβλικά κείμενα, με τις οποίες το σύγχρονο της εποχής του συγγραφέα κοινό θεωρείτο εξοικειωμένο, δυστυχώς παρέμεναν κεκλεισμένες θύρες στον σύγχρονο αναγνώστη. Δεν πρόκειται εδώ να σταθώ στις αιτίες, αν και θα εκλάβω ως δεδομένο το αποτέλεσμα.
Η αναγνωστική συνέχεια αναγκαστικά θα διαταράσσεται τακτικά από την πληθώρα σημειώσεων που ευτυχώς έχει προσθέσει ο Μάρκαρης στο τέλος, και οι οποίες αποδεικνύονται σωτήριες για όλους εμάς. Είναι προφανές, βέβαια, ότι όσο πιο καταρτισμένος ο αναγνώστης τόσο λιγότερο θα τις χρειαστεί. Επιπλέον, θα μπορέσει να απολαύσει ακόμα περισσότερες από τις πλείστες αναφορές του συγγραφέα σε ιστορικά πρόσωπα και γεγονότα. Ο Φάουστ, κατ’ αυτή την έννοια, είναι ένα απόλυτα δημοκρατικό βιβλίο, καθώς προσφέρει ισόποσα και ισότιμα σε εκείνον που προσέρχεται με πλήρη μορφωτική εξάρτηση στον αγώνα με αυτό το πολυπρισματικό κείμενο.

Οφείλω όμως να επιστρέψω στο φλέγον ζήτημα της μετάφρασης και της απόδοσης. Είναι, ως γνωστόν, μεγάλο το ποσοστό εκείνων που υποστηρίζουν το αμετάφραστο της ποίησης (ειδικά αυτής), με βάσιμα επιχειρήματα. Ο ίδιος ο Μάρκαρης στην Εισαγωγή του στέκεται ιδιαίτερα στο ζήτημα αυτό, επεξηγώντας λεπτομερώς τους προβληματισμούς του τόσο σε επιμέρους σημεία του έργου που χρήζουν προσοχής και αποτελούν πιθανές εστίες διαφοροποίησης όσο και γενικότερα. Ποια γλώσσα είναι κατάλληλη και γιατί; Τη στιγμή που ο ίδιος ο δημιουργός εναλλάσσει το ιδίωμά του, πώς είναι δυνατόν ο μεταφραστής να παραμείνει προσκολλημένος σε ένα και μοναδικό (αυτό της τρέχουσας Δημοτικής); Εξαιρετικής σημασίας είναι και ετούτο που αναφέρει: ότι δηλαδή δεν είναι τυχαίο πως το πρωτότυπο κείμενο παραμένει φρέσκο, σε αντίθεση με τις μεταφράσεις που γηράσκουν τάχιστα.

Εκείνο όμως που συχνά λειτούργησε ανασχετικά όσον αφορά την απρόσκοπτη ανάγνωση του έργου είναι η μετάφραση/ απόδοση της ομοιοκαταληξίας, η οποία προφανώς εκπορεύεται από το πρωτότυπο. Όπως μπορώ να το κατανοήσω, προκειμένου να μεταφερθεί στη γλώσσα μας, ο ικανός μεταφραστής θα χρειαστεί να παίξει με τις λέξεις, μετατρέποντάς τες σε κύβους που θα πρέπει να πέσουν στη σωστή θέση ώστε να επιτευχθεί το ευκταίο αποτέλεσμα. Ως εκ τούτου, το εγχείρημα ενέχει σημαντικό βαθμό αυθαιρεσίας (ελευθερίας θα έλεγε άλλος), η οποία μπορεί να συντηρεί μεν το πνεύμα (από νοηματικής πλευράς) του αρχικού κειμένου, ενώ ταυτόχρονα το αρνείται προκειμένου να το εντάξει στη φόρμα της ομοιοκαταληξίας. Επαφίεται πλήρως στην ποιητική/ λεξιπλαστική ικανότητα του μεταφραστή να αποσυναρμολογήσει το πρωτότυπο στη γλώσσα του και στη συνέχεια να συναρμολογήσει τα κομμάτια στη δική του μεταφρασμένη. Είναι αδύνατον να κρίνω κατά πόσον επιτυχές είναι το αποτέλεσμα, μιας και αυτό θα απαιτούσε να γνωρίζω άπταιστα γερμανικά και να συγκρίνω τα δύο κείμενα.

Εκείνο πάντως που μπορώ να συνεισφέρω είναι ότι συγκρίνοντας κάποιες σελίδες της ανά χείρας μετάφρασης με κάποια παλιότερη αλλά εξίσου αξιόλογη, παρατήρησα αυτού του είδους τις αλλαγές που προανέφερα: οι πανάξιοι μεταφραστές προκειμένου να επιτύχουν την επιθυμητή ομοιοκαταληξία, χρησιμοποίησαν όλες τις πιθανές εναλλαγές λέξεων, ενώ κάποιες ελάχιστες φορές διέκρινα ακόμα και διαφοροποίηση στο νόημα μεταξύ τους (όσον αφορά το πρωτότυπο δεν γνωρίζω). Αν και πρόκειται για μια αέναη συζήτηση, καταθέτω απλά ένα ερώτημα, ολοκληρώνοντας εδώ αυτό το θέμα: σε ποιο βαθμό το τελικό κείμενο που διάβασα είναι -πολύ χοντρικά κι ας μου επιτραπεί η αυθαιρεσία- οι ιδέες του Γκαίτε σε ποίηση Μάρκαρη (ή όποιου άλλου μεταφραστή); Δυστυχώς, επ’ αυτού μπορεί να αποφανθεί, μετά λόγου γνώσεως, ο αναγνώστης που θα απολαύσει το πρωτότυπο. Από πλευράς μου, είμαι ευγνώμων στον αξιέπαινο μεταφραστή που μου προσέφερε τη δυνατότητα να προσεγγίσω ένα κείμενο που ειδάλλως θα παρέμενε για πάντα απρόσιτο και επτασφράγιστο ως μυστικό.

I love the Faust myth by Goethe. It has engendered hundreds of imitations in literature (my favorite being Thomas Mann's Dr Faustus) and opera (Busoni's is the craziest, Gounod's probably the loudest) and movies (well, too many to even name). I have read various English translations and never been able to read the original German much to my regret. Nonetheless, it is an essential read.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe brought together allegory, mythology, and elements of magical realism to create his epic play Faust .

A very brief synopsis is: Faust, a learned gentleman, is burned out and seeks more in life. He feels like something is missing in his life, so he makes a deal with the devil to sell his soul if the devil can give him something which he never wants to end. The devil takes the deal and the play follows different ways that Faust seeks that ultimate carnal knowledge and utopia which he thinks his soul is lacking. Will he find what he’s looking for?

The character Mephistopheles (the devil incarnate) was interesting and entertaining. I have to say that I enjoyed the 1st part of Faust much more than the 2nd half. The 1st part made more sense and was easier to follow. The 2nd part was honestly over my head. When I get into Greek mythology and references to that I just have a lot of trouble following and comprehending (or caring for that matter). It was very difficult for me to slog through certain parts.

Faust had its moments of brilliance. The contrasting of the characters Faust and Homunculus was interesting. The play also felt a lot like Macbeth with the witches and Walpurgis Night scenes.

Would I recommend Faust? Yes on part 1 (which stands by itself). Part 2 gets awfully heavy so I can’t say I’d recommend it unless to completists who want to finish the whole play just for the sake of finishing.

This weird, beautiful, complicated play was the work of Goethe's entire life; he wrote it over 60 years, and I doubt he was done when he died. Part II was published posthumously in 1832; it had his, uh, prehumous approval, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't have been happy to spend another ten years tweaking it. To call it an exploration of the Faust myth seems almost like an insult; it's more the distillation of everything he knew and believed, framed loosely by Faust. (And I do mean loosely.)

That's undoubtedly part of why it's so complicated. It abruptly switches scenes, themes, tone and meter; sometimes I was halfway through a scene before I even figured out what was going on. It's one of the few works where, at the halfway mark, I was already imagining what it would be like when I read it again.

That's a way of saying I didn't get it, and I didn't get it, at least not fully. Hell, it's the entire life of one of our greatest thinkers; I'm not ashamed to admit it. It's also a way of saying that I'm not sure I picked the right translation. I have nothing to compare it to, but Atkins' felt matter-of-fact - plodding - unpoetic. As well, the endnotes and introduction were cursory.

What a fun read!!! I went into it expecting poetry and denseness.... Instead it's a great romp with an imp and a poet. I can see why it inspired so many retellings! Sheer fun and tonnes of jokes for us layfolk to chew on.

My super fun review, if it doesn't charge you up to read it... then you just might need a bit more Faust in your life (which is a compliment)

Gilt dies auch für den zweiten Teil der Faust-Tragödie, so ließe sich mit ein wenig Bosheit fragen, doch da ich den Alten von Zeit zu Zeit gern lese, was aber auch für Karl May gilt, und da er mir, im Deutschunterricht meiner Jugend oftmals des trocknen Tons satt, die Augen für die Majestät unserer Sprache geöffnet hat – was man von Karl May nicht gerade sagen kann – und mir mit der Kühnheit seiner Gedanken nicht selten den Atem benahm – so habe ich freiwillig „Prometheus“, „Der untreue Knabe“ und „Totentanz“, letzteres auch in der Version von Iron Maiden, auswendig gelernt – bin ich geneigt anzunehmen, daß ich einfach noch nicht so weit bin, dem Zweiten Teil wirklich zu verstehen. Oder, um aus „Seinfeld“ zu zitieren: Goethe, “it’s not you – it’s me”.

Deshalb werde ich mich hier denn allein auf den ersten Teil der Tragödie konzentrieren, in dem Goethe den volkstümlichen Faust-Stoff aufgriff und dem Protagonisten, noch deutlicher als Christopher Marlowe dies tut, auch positive Züge angedeihen läßt und die in der Sage mitschwingende moralisierende Mahnung zu einem gottesfürchtigen, kirchenkonformen Leben abschwächt. Was ist es eigentlich, das Faust vom Leben verlangt? Zunächst gewinnt man den Eindruck, er sei auf der Suche nach dem Wissen hinter den Dingen, unzufrieden mit den Antworten, die die verschiendenen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen für den nach Erkenntnis Strebenden bereithalten, unzufrieden auch mit den Grenzen menschlicher Erkenntnis – wer denkt da nicht an Faustens spöttische Worte über den „Geist der Zeiten“ zu einer Zeit, in der Ranke der Geschichtswissenschaft die Aufgabe zumaß, herauszufinden, „wie es eigentlich gewesen ist“ – und darum bemüht, das zu verstehen, „was die Welt im Innersten zusammenhält“. Einerseits stellt dieser Faust die Traditionen und Erkenntnismodelle der verschiedenen Wissenschaften auf diese Weise in Frage, doch andererseits ist er mit seiner Annahme, es müsse doch eine letzte Erkenntnis vom ureigenen Wesen der Welt möglich sein, auch unendlich naiv. Diese Naivität, gepaart mit einem gerüttelt Maß an Arroganz – man denke nur an Faustens Versuch, mit dem Erdgeist von Du auf Du zu plaudern –, macht diesen strebenden Menschen zu einem gefundenen Fressen für den Teufel, der in ihm auch den Wunsch wachruft, das Leben aus der Erfahrung und dem Erleben heraus kennenzulernen. Faust ist eben doch nur ein Romantiker, und auch Mephistopheles ist letzten Endes nur ein Werkzeug des göttlichen Plans, wie der Prolog im Himmel gleich anfangs verdeutlicht. Und ganz gewiß ist Goethes Faust kein Caveat vor der Wissenschaft, denn schließlich sagt Mephistopheles selbst:

“Verachte nur Vernunft und Wissenschaft,
Des Menschen allerhöchste Kraft,
Laß nur in Blend- und Zauberwerken
Dich von dem Lügengeist bestärken,
So hab ich dich schon unbedingt! –
Ihm hat das Schicksal einen Geist gegeben,
Der ungebändigt immer vorwärtsdringt
Und dessen übereiltes Streben
Der Erde Freuden überspringt.“

Solange der Mensch strebt – nach Wissen, nach Vernunft und auch nach maßvoll genossener Erfahrung –, braucht er, so will es scheinen, die ewige Verdammnis nicht zu befürchten. Hiermit gibt Goethe dem Stoff eine viel fortschrittlichere, aufgeklärtere und optimistischere Lesart, als die traditionelle Faust-Legenden-Adaptation dies tat. Überhaupt spricht Goethes Mephistopheles viel häufiger Wahrheiten aus, als man dies dem Fürsten der Lüge wohl zutrauen möchte – und dies ist nur folgerichtig, denn jemand, dessen Ruf so ruiniert ist wie der des Mephistopheles, braucht eben kein Blatt mehr vor den Mund zu nehmen.

Allerdings lenkt Mephistopheles den Erlebnishunger Faustens dann weidlich in zerstörerische Bahnen, wovon die tragische Geschichte Margaretens kündet, deren gesamte Familie dem Egoismus unseres Helden – wenn er denn einer ist – zum Opfer fällt. Und hiermit wären wir denn auch schon bei der faszinierenden Frage, die den gesamten ersten (und wahrscheinlich auch den zweiten) Teil des Werkes durchzieht, nämlich der, ob der Mensch für die fast grenzenlose Freiheit, die sein Geist gebiert, gemacht sei, haben es doch gemeinhin Bauch und Gemächt schwer, den oft hehren Vorstellungen des Geistes zu folgen, sondern zwingen ihn vielmehr für gewöhnlich, für den ihnen eigenen Appetit und die Maßnahmen, die nötig sind, ihn zu befriedigen, möglichst wohlklingende Entschuldigungen zu finden. Goethes Antwort auf diese Frage ist von Optimismus geprägt.

Abgesehen von der gedanklichen Kühnheit des Goethe’schen Faust-Stoffes ist der Text auch sprachlich überwältigend, und viele Passagen haben als Zitate ihr Eigenleben entwickelt, womit Goethes Faust auf einer Stufe mit der Bibel, dem Werk Shakespeares und dem Film The Big Lebowski steht.

Einzig als dramatischer Text ist Faust eine herbe Enttäuschung, denn wenn Goethe auch ein genialer Dichter war, so taugte er als Dramatiker doch ungleich weniger, wie man an der nicht enden wollenden Exposition, der mangelhaften Entwicklung des Konflikts, mehreren dramatisch überflüssigen Szenen – ich denke nur an das Geplänkel in Auerbachs Keller – und dem überhasteten Ende sieht. Den Faust sollte man eher als ein episches Gedicht denn als ein Drama lesen, und vielleicht sollte man sich dabei auch bedauernd fragen, was ein Shakespeare aus diesem Stoff gemacht hätte. Eine Frage, die sich Goethe ganz sicher auch gestellt hat, gehört doch seine Shakespeare-Verehrung zu des Meisters sympathischeren Charakterzügen.

The story of Faust, the man who sold his soul to the devil, is a familiar one but I have never actually read Goethe's book before this and I am so glad I did.

The story is in two parts and really reads like two different novels with of course the theme of Faust's story throughout. That could be in part because there were decades between the writing of both parts or maybe that is the way Goethe intended it to be. The format of both parts is the same: a play written in poetic form.

Part 1 is a bit dark like a gothic romance. Faust is educated, successful and seriously depressed. He wants to find true meaning and feel fulfilled. Voila' in comes Mephistopheles who made a "Job like" wager with God that he could tip the scales and bring Faust over to the dark side. But as we all know, betting on the devil is always a bad idea. Then begins the story of Faust getting "experience" guided by Mephistopheles with a tragic story including Faust's love interest Gretchen that will end part one but you will be wanting more. (If this seems a bit like Dante's trek through Hell by Virgil, I agree)

Part 2 is like cold water in your face. Wake up, this is real life here! This is almost campy and edgy in style with lots of mini parable like stories using characters from Greek myth, Shakespeare, Homer, etc. If you aren't familiar with some of these stories it may be a bit frustrating but if you are it is a fun read as Faust is getting "experience" in the world of supposed bliss that turns out anything but.

The real point that Goethe seems to be making is that intention matters. If you are striving in the world to be a good person or are striving to find true meaning that you will be forgiven your mistakes. It sounds more Christian than the story really is but that seems to be the essence.

Books like these are so worthwhile not just for their philosophical messages but you will find yourself writing in the margins other literary characters and even movie characters that you'll realize must have been based on parts of this story. Certainly a must read for people interested in literature.

Just a note: I read the A.S. Kline translation which gives the full story. I also have the Kaufmann translation which only has Part I and a pared down version of Part II. I guess Kaufmann felt that the longer part 2 section was a bit bloated and superfluous but I enjoyed it so for me I prefer the A.S. Kline translation.

My immediate impression upon first reading Faust was, "Wow, this is Scandinavian death metal without the deafening noise." In other words, Faust is the coolest thing ever.

As I continued reading, I was struck by the liveliness of the poetry. Faust isn't words sitting static on a page, but a living thing, thanks to Goethe's ability to vary his rhythms and rhyme schemes to convey different moods, characters and atmospheres. The language is dynamic, artful and often brilliant.

Oddly, Faust reminds me of the sitcom Community's tendency to use pop culture references. Faust's second part in particular makes reference to the pop culture icons of Goethe's time. Liberal references to Greek mythology, Shakespeare, Lord Byron, the Bible and others are sprinkled throughout. One passage even reminded me of the theme song from Laverne and Shirley!

I rated Faust four stars because the second part in particular is filled with long digressions that are hard to follow, laced as they are with references that are no longer common, or at least unfamiliar to me. Certainly, I could acknowledge my own ignorance and give Goethe his full due, but I'm a man and that means I have a frail ego to protect. Hence my taking of one star from what is otherwise an enjoyable and masterful creation.

O primeiro livro em alemão. Claro que compreendi pouco. Mas como já conheço a historia de Fausto através de Pessoa, e tem umas ilustrações lindíssimas de Klaus Ensikat. E claro Goethe é um escritor fenomenal. Peno que ainda tenho de ler as traduções para compreende-lo.

I was pleasantly surprised by this, a book that I went into thinking that I would conclude it to be so-so. When I first bought it, I did not know it was a poem, and so was somewhat disappointment when I opened the pages expecting to see them full of text from left to right and instead coming up short halfway across the page. Poems are fine for some, but I myself am an advocate for prose, and was prepared to read paragraphs of paragraphs of descriptions of Faust's inner madness, his dialogues arguing morality with his demons, the gory details of his deal with the Devil.

I did get all of this, but in poetic form, which I did like, but...

...let's just say that I found the poem to compromise meaning at times in order to rhyme and make sense of its own meter. Now, originally, this was written in German, so maybe the meanings of what is happening is clearer there, but in English, I felt that this was compromised at times. For instance, the consequences of Faust's coupling with Margarete (Grette), such as what happens to her family and how she ends up in a dungeon, were very unclear in the translation of the text that I read. Actually, looking back, I couldn't even find the moment when she and Faust physically copulated, so I was entirely confused why she was going crazy and then in prison all of a sudden--a true WTF moment for me.

However, if there is one thing that I must give to the credit of the translation, it is Mephistopheles and...pretty much every single thing this character does and says. It is savage, but his criticisms of humanity are indeed true, perhaps more now than ever before with so much evil predominant in this world with a population much higher than in Goethe's time was thought possible. Grant you, I know that he's a villain and whatnot, but next to Faust, who is stupid enough to fall for his tricks, I found myself supporting Mephistopheles a bit more, since he at least knew what he was doing, whereas Faust was in a state of perpetual confusion. It was kind of an Othello moment for me, in which I'm supporting the villain more than the hero of the story because the villain is purely and simply smarter. Again, this is based on personal preference, but I can only genuinely support a character that I respect, and that respect is more often than not earned for me via intelligence of some sort, which to me lends narrative worth to a character. Iago was easy to support because he had ways of being charming and so gosh-darn smart that I couldn't hate him for it; Mephistopheles kind of functions the same way for me, although his snark is more because of what he is rather than who he is--the dynamics of a "role" rather than the psychology of "character".

All in all though, for Part I of this play, I was thoroughly entertained and read through it quite quickly. Part II however, after the first two scenes...I couldn't convince myself to pick it up again, so I left it alone.

Regardless, 4 stars for Part I!

Had this on my bookshelves - must have belonged to one of my parents - so I decided to finally read it. Had a different experience with Parts 1 and 2. Part 1 is much more tight narratively. Faust is offered a deal by Mephistopheles: "I will bind myself to your service in this world, To be at your beck and never rest nor slack; When we meet again on the other side, In the same coin you shall pay me back." Faust takes the deal, and soon afterwards sees a beautiful girl on the street, offers to escort her and is rejected. He asks Mephistopheles for her. At first Mephistopheles demurs: "She? She was coming from her priest, Absolved from her sins one and all; I'd crept up near the confessional. An innocent thing. Innocent? Yes! At church with nothing to confess! Over that girl I have no power." But Faust insists. Man, do things turn out badly for poor Gretchen. Really really really badly. I was sort of impressed at Goethe's ruthlessness. This all makes a gripping story line.

Part II is a different kettle of fish. Goethe decides to use the framing of the Faust story to perform a grand overview of history, mankind, mythology... MacNiece, the translator, says that he cut a fair bit of this section and I'm glad he did as what remains is a slog. Faust and Mephistopheles advise an emperor - ultimately, this leads him to solve his financial problems with the introduction of a lovely new tool, paper money. Goethe brings in Proteus and Philemon and Baucis - I had to have my Bullfinch's Mythology nearby to remember who everyone was. Helen comes into the story, is paired up with Faust and they have a child together. Must say, I felt almost as bad for Helen as I did for Gretchen. She gets matched with men without having much say in the matter. She is accompanied by a chorus of Trojan women, and they have a pretty pragmatic view of what is going on: "Women, to men's love accustomed, It is not for them to choose, All their lot is knowing. Whether to blond-headed shepherd, Or perhaps to black-bristled faun, As time may bring the occasion, Over their rounded bodies, Women assign to them equal right." Helen seems outwardly fine with everything, but after Meneleus and Paris, she knows the drill.

The ending thoroughly annoyed me and made me annoyed with Gretchen and if I were Mephistopheles I'd feel very badly done by.

I remember reading Louis MacNeice, one of the Auden group of poets from the 1930s, when I was studying English in college, so it was interesting to encounter Goethe with him as a guide. He does an okay job. In the Introduction, he says that various friends recommended he provide the translation in blank verse but he chose to have it rhyme, as he felt that "the rhymes in Goethe are part of the sense." I side with the friends on this one. The English in this translation feels a bit dated, and the rhymes contribute to that.

"Faust" był dla mnie ogromnym wyzwaniem i jestem z siebie bardzo dumna, że podołałam, i to jeszcze z uśmiechem na twarzy.

Tak jak wiele innych wspaniałych historii o relacji diabła i człowieka, "Faust" rozpoczyna się od zakładu - zakładu Boga z Mefistofelesem, jak bezpieczna jest dusza doktora Fausta, jak daleko posunie się ludzkie stworzenie w sięganiu coraz dalej.

Uwielbiam wykreowaną przez Goethego postać Mefistofelesa - od samego początku była w mojej głowie bardzo wyrazista i żywa, idealnie dowcipna. Problemy miałam z postacią Fausta, lecz w ostatnich scenach w związku z tą osobą współodczuwałam tryumf.

"Faust" jest podzielony na dwie części. Pierwsza część była dla mnie szalenie atrakcyjna, bo dotykała spraw codziennego ludowego życia, stworzeń nocy oraz spraw grzechu; to opowieść skandalu. Skandalu, który pociągnął mnie za sobą, a jednocześnie wydawał się tak znajomy, że mogłam sobie spokojnie oceniać postacie.

Druga część wzięła mnie z zaskoczenia. Jest to taka historia, przy której, jak już wcześniej mówiłam w kilku recenzjach, towarzyszy mi uczucie, że to wszystko, co autor kiedykolwiek sobie wymarzył i pragnął wypowiedzieć, przywrócić do życia - i z tego, co wiem o tym szczególnym autorze, to prawda. Warto też od razu wspomnieć, że język tej opowieści jest tak piękny, a zarazem naturalny, że trudno pogodzić się z tym, że te sceny nie były rzeczywistością. Druga część sięga po motywy wielu kultur i poziomów naszej rzeczywistości. Sięga po postacie mitologiczne, starożytne, sięga po nasze wartości; wzbija się na nich tak wysoko, że zdaje się, jakby historia nigdy nie miała opaść. Na początku byłam tym zniechęcona i zniecierpliwiona, lecz później to wszystko nabrało dla mnie wartości, poruszyło mnie i ujrzałam w tym sens. Czuję, jakby Goethe w tej historii przekroczył wszelkie granice i sam sięgnął dalej, niż jego sny. Co za wspaniała i pełna historia.

Tak się zastanawiałam, czy to na pewno to, czy "Faust" ze mną współgra, ale za to, co przedstawił tu Goethe, nie mogę przyznać niższej oceny. Jest to lektura cholernie dużo od czytelnika wymagająca, ale było warto.

Jeśli na serwisie AO3 nie znajdę fanfiction o przygodach Fausta i Mefistofelesa, to będzie to zaniedbanie.

A jednak śmierć to nie najmilszy gość.

So, this was something.

I definetily can appreciate what this book did and the idea was good. But the execution was poorly done. And maybe I just don't get it, but either I immediately forgot what I had just read or I was bored out of my mind.

The characters were one-dimensional and maybe they were meant to be unlikeably, but I couldn't stand any of them. Even Mephisto who definitely had potential.

In the storyline, we were jumping from one scene to the next and you barely had time to understand what was going on before you found yourself somewhere entirely different.

And don't even get me started on the "lovestory". Like one minute he sees her and in the next his whole life is consumed with love for a person he never even talked to for more than 10 seconds. And she miraculously feels the same. Yeah sure.

The second part of the story got even weirder and scarcely anything made sense to me.

Overall, I'm glad I finally finished it, but probably wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't required reading for my German class.

Αλλά και ως προς το περιεχόμενο θίγονται προαιώνια ανθρώπινα ερωτήματα, ενώ γίνεται μια θαυμαστή ανασύσταση των αρχαιοελληνικών μύθων (στον Φάουστ ΙΙ). Θα ήθελα να μείνω μόνο σε δυο ερωτήματα: Γιατί σώζεται η Μαργαρίτα; Γιατί σώζεται ο Φάουστ; Η Μαργαρίτα σώζεται γιατί μένει να τιμωρηθεί για τις πράξεις της. Η τιμωρία απελευθερώνει! Ο Φάουστ σώζεται γιατί εργάζεται, δημιουργεί μέχρι την τελευταία στιγμή της ζωής του. Δεν εργάζεται τα καλά έργα· το αντίθετο. Αλλά δεν έχει σημασία. Σημασία έχει το εργον. Και η πρόοδος (έννοια που απουσιάζει-όπως μας λέει ο Κ. Παπαϊωάννου-από τον αρχαίο κόσμο)! Η εργασία απελευθερώνει! Μέγας αρχαιογνώστης ο Goethe αλλά (μου φαίνεται) και ακραιφνής προτεστάντης (ή μάλλον ουμανιστής)!

One could say—all action, no filler. For the longest time, in lieu of a review, I had listed here a quote of Archimboldi's, from Bolano's 2666—that one ought to read Faust ten or fifteen times before the age of sixteen, if one wants any chance at having a reputable literary opinion. I have read it six times now, and hope this review serves to elucidate that which I've discovered in & about it over the years, but it should remain clear that Faust is a book greatly without form and possibly inexhaustible; Goethe himself, by even scientific accounts the man with the highest IQ we can measure, said that he didn't understand why people would come to ask him its meaning, as if he himself somehow knew ...

PART ONE
The first part of the play is the more beloved, and was indeed a very popular work even from its initial fragmentary publications in the late 18th century; every person worth their salt read it, and in cafes full of others reading it. In many ways this first part features, in a more condensed and opaque form, all the cosmological arguments and wide-ranging poetries of the second; much of this is to do with the organic structure, which follows a boundless and impulsive path from the 'Scholar's Tragedy' into the 'Gretchen Tragedy', but neither of which are complete tragedies in any conventional sense nor tonally isolated—the former has room for the wonderfully casual Easter morning flaneur, while the latter has room both for the deliriously cosmological Walpurgisnacht and its dirge of a finale.

What's consistent throughout the first part is the dialogue between scholar and nature (or between rationalist and occult), Faust's suicidal anxieties deriving as much from the Phaedrus as from the various schools of German philosophy attributed him ... and around him is a world in vibrancy, culminating in the Walpurgisnacht and its overflowing catalogue of natural and preternatural expressions: human, animal and esoteric alike. Indeed, across the various genre pastiches (folk adventures, religious dramas, intellectual epochs, and subterranean masques) Goethe seems to be creating an entire world by the Spinozist strata of modalities, whereby everything is understood on its own terms as organic parts of an ineluctable total structure.

What's the point of concerning ourselves with the form? For one, this play stands in sharp counterpoint to Goethe's beloved antecdants in Schiller and Racine, and against his contemporaries with arcane philosophical theories guiding their hands, such as Hegel or Hoelderlin. Goethe's profoundly wayward departure is analogous to the intellectual content of his drama. While Goethe routinely mocked the idealist philosophers and constructed his drama to mock such simple readings, we can read Faust's dilemma as a scholastic running up against the limits of a, say, Spinozist reality, learning to truly comprehend by his orgiastically naturalist journey into Walpurgisnacht. But the profundity of the play is its preoccupation with the world, such that we can read the doctor as a Platonist, escaping the sophistry of books by aporetic dialectic with Mephisto and riding on the wings of Eros to the sun's eternal feminine; or we can infer an early existentialist argument, Faust being led into a Nietzschean revolt against abstract intellectualism, or on an Heideggerian route to a more direct understanding of the ontological subaltern; or we can read it metahistorically, the ultimate summation of Western Culutre to that point, containing a prophecy for its finale. Philosophers are as a rule always wrong, and any merit they derive comes from their agon with the world around them.

Any real guiding form or model to Faust, then, is that of many pre-existing structures running up against reality (and later on, superreality). The first, and to Goethe the most poignant, is the 'Gretchen Tragedy', an essentially simple fabl, as much like a lighter Shakespearean comedy as a German folk tale in all respects. The irregular rhyme-verses and songs (one taken from Hamlet, others from local songs) produce a very vivid pastoral that sustains so much comedy by contrast to Faust's melodramatics in the cave and Mephisto's urbane comments, as well as the latter's own degradation by flirtation with the older lady. Anyone familiar with the stream of Germanic intellectualism will understand the distinctly compelling nature of medieval pastoral, especially when contrasted with visceral philosophical anxieties; Murnau's 1926 Faust film does a very striking job depicting this a few years before this aesthetic became the leading imagery of Nazi propaganda. Goethe, more or less inventor of this intellectual move, does this of course without any of the compulsive psychopathologies that people like Heidegger have on this subject.

What does it all mean, if all the sources juggle lightly in the air and Goethe play the role of literary demiurge rather than self-insert? We can neither say that Faust's feelings about the weight of ideas or the mysterious power of nature are to be discarded, nor that the solution is a return to peasant romance—the Gretchen tragedy is as much a masturbatory fantasy for Faust as it is a cruel and fleeting parody of life. A helpful analogy (indeed, maybe one of the few that are helpful) is a moment early on into Plato's Republic, where Socrates has been hypothetically outlining with Adeimantus the structure of an ideal city. Glaucon, Adeimantus (and Plato's) brother intrudes these logical processions to ask, can't the heroes kiss pretty girls in this city? In effect, he has asked Socrates to exit pure reason and its neglect of the erotic, and provide a real & wordly explanation about the ideal of justice. This involves a long and extremely complex demonstration, occupying most of the rest of the dialogue, which mostly consists in profounder but even more abstract metaphysics. Much is in play here. A blind erotic impulse has shattered pure rationality, but at the same time brought on a deeper, more complex, and all the more useless array of logical precipices; different human drives are competing, each causing a perpeual fogging of the other, and a tendency for things to become wider and less attainable as they proceed further and further towards the truth. One thinks of the Weimar Expressionist cinematography and its occasional tendency to use blurry or nonsensical shots to great effect; but this same impulse really is everywhere in writing and elsewhere, perhaps one of the more fundamental of all possible moments. This is the basic motion of Faust Part 1, and is repeated in Faust Part 2, concluding in either case only with the ineffable voice of God crying, “Saved!”.

PART TWO—ACT ONE
The analogies between one and two are very close, also, on a literal level: things shown are what they are, characters experience intellectual troubles within their own place and time, surreal masques take place, Faust strives blindly and Mephisto denigrates everything he sees. Perhaps the principle contrast is that Faust's intellectual problems are now bound up in the political, something Goethe associates almost exclusively with the influence of Mephisto. This conflict, too, is centered around another romantic tale, this time far abstracter affair yet similar in its pastiche nature.

Act One is a good demonstration: after from the naturalist prologue where Faust is healed, the focus of the play bounces between the erotic and the political in a way that would make even Plato blush—the invention of industry is followed by a magical masque, which is followed by the invention of paper currency, which is followed by a second magical display, the summoning of Paris and Helen. The main masque is a more structured sequel to the Walpurgisnacht, a series of mythopaeic demonstrations, by Faust, of human affairs centered around a charioteer who represents poetry (David Luke identifies him with Euphorion, which is interesting to consider). The difference between the Walpurgisnacht of Part One and this is that Faust attempts to be a sort of genuine Sophist, demonstrating truths to the crowds through his poetico-magical lens—and utterly fails to communicate anything to the crowd who then riot, as Plato in the Ion suggests (Goethe, by the way, wrote a very good short essay on the Ion, worth reading). That the political has an inherently corrupting quality, or that it is comprised of failed communication, is not a very profound thought, and the economic parable is played mostly as a hyperbolic joke (for example, the suddenly rich clown).

Rather, it is the clamorous but emaciating relation of society as such to poetry that is the central point of this part—the perversion of the masque, yes, and also the ridiculous spectacle arond Helen's appearance. This is the proper opening thrust of Part Two: the question of whether Faust isn't interested in politics because of the pull of Eros, or if it's because of his amateur expertese in romance that he isn't cut out for politics. A good point to consider may be that Faust is not much less of an onanist in this sequence than he was in Part One—here, now literaly, he is an illusionist in love with his own creation, and willing to pursue the semblance of Helen, perhaps all the way to the real Helen. This is, perhaps, the same scenario as the Iliad, itself a political drama of this kind.

ACT TWO
Act Two, which seems so distinct, essentially carries on the two themes, with the addition of a third: Faust continues his erotic striving and Mephisto surveys the mythos for a disguise to continue his political sophistry in Act Three, while we are borne witness to the birth and development of the bodiless Homunculus.

This game of illusion, sex and politics is continued into Act Two, with the important counterpoint of the Homunculus, another variation. Each character has their becoming—Faust wants to become an erotic being, Mephisto wants to become demonic in semblance for political purposes, and the Homunculus wants to figure out what to become and how. He is the obvious protagonist, and perhaps like Faust his conclusion is a Protean provenance given as all nature sings the praise of Eros ... but it should not be forgotten that Mephisto makes a few oblique comments explicitly admitting that he created the Homunculus, which occurs when he rings the giant bell towards the start of the act. Goethe himself said obliquely of this bell-ringing that it is meant to align with the earthquake that takes place in classical Walpurgisnacht, and that both are to be identified with the French Revolution—which somehow ties this theme of Eros and Humanity together with the political masses just lambasted in Act One. The surrealism of this chapter almost seems to suspend the reader's desire to think about it beyond the broad strokes of becoming; something about the spectacle of a floating test tube man with dolphins and pre-socratic philosophers is a little obscuring.

What makes this prism possible is the is its setting. Vastly moreso than the Walpurgisnacht of Part One or the masque of Act One, Goethe makes this profound menagerie both of metanatural scope and of his most fluid poetic expression; a series of mythopaeic beings and the recurrent string of choruses are centered around the singing of the infamous sirens, who survey the action of the three plots at first with the beauty of abstract horror and apocalypse ... yet their chorale, however, concludes on a looping around to a celebration of birth, Eros and life. To me, it seems very strongly that these are to be thought of as a subterranean version of Plato's Diotima, which can see beyond the limits of human existence into an overarching cyclical morphology (as schizo-botanist Goethe would say), presenting their ultimate explanans in a way as inhumanely bizarre as ultimately and profoundly true. The sirens are, then, one key to Faust, being the astral observers from whose perspective Goethe (as both God and demiurge of this depicted world) sees the events he's created, and the least ironic of the many commentaries on the play from within its pages. Mephisto is their competition in this, but note how even he is unnerved by the strange vigor of this classical fantasy, a hint of his final fate.

ACT THREE
This was the earliest section of Part Two to be finished, and was published on its own as 'Helen: A Faust Intermezzo' fifteen years prior. This is a pretty good title for what it is. The symbology is pretty easy: everyone knows that Euphorion is Byron, and everyone also knows that it is essentially a pastiche of a Euripides play, tempered with the Faust's Germanic intrusion and Mephisto's twisted feminine version of Tiresias as Phorkyas. Its colinearity with the rest of the running themes of Faust are also pretty easy—Mephisto and Faust as political racketeers contrasted with Menelaus, their failure, the tragic adventures of Eros, the Icarian character of poetry, etc. I can't remember if people have commented on the specially sympathetic presentation of Helen in the first scene or if those were just my own impressions from the past, but it is interesting to compare Goethe's Helen with comparably strong female protagonists in the Greek tragedians, as well as with the couple of scenes featuring Helen in Homer himself—Goethe undersatnds the specially distinct character of the tragic greek woman, with the clarity of expression through passivity, and impressive degree of sensitivity in ascribing her thoughts, all rendered in the most dignified tone possible.

This act, too, features with its chorus (this time, of the escaped Spartan women), which sticks to the tragedian parody until the very end, where Helen absconds to the clouds and the chorus scatters to spread the earth, becoming nymphs and instantiated forms of beauty to make a dulcet haunt of the earth for the rest of time. It begs multiple questions, particularly of the abruptly farcical nature of this act in distinction to the rest of Part Two, which follows a zany but otherwise very coherent & stable narrative. Faust achieved Helen, but did this 'really happen'? (often an odious question, but begged to an extent by the running theme of semblance that culminates here). Faust achieved every man's dream in marrying and impregnating Helen of Troy, but it happen so quickly and so melodiously that one cannot shake the feeling of a dream sequence. These sorts of things happen; I can tell you that the most common result is a psychotic break or something close to it—Mephisto, revealing himself at the finale and confronting the audience, stands perhaps in accord.

ACT FOUR
On my first couple of reads, I was always bored by the relatively banal parody of politics and war in Act Four, but eventually the deeper meaning of the section reveals itself. The opening monologue, with its classic Goethe naturalism regarding clouds, is one of the finest in the entire play, as well as the subsequent dialogue with Mephisto regarding the demonic overtones of tectonic plates. These can be connected, first of all, to Goethe's running scientific theories about the organic structures of natural beings, and this 'dialectic' between tectonic plates and clouds was something that always excited him; it is with this trend of Faust's increasing sensitivity to naturalism (which began with his ascent to Walpurgisnacht back in Part One) that all of the themes begin to run together.

Indeed, it is with this deepening apprehension of natural morphologies that Faust makes the connection he conspicuously didn't in Act One, namely, connecting his understanding of nature to his Eros, and quickly thereafter to his political (and then industrial) ambitions. Faust's delusion that the sight of his victory is another such natural 'dialectic' is a moment where all the partitions break down and he becomes the ultimate symbol of the West—his sexual, political and natural perceptions all begin to blend together and he himself becomes a sort of hyper-inspired machine. It is extremely reminiscent of Plato's suggestion in the Republic that the ascendant tyrant inevitably views himself (and is seen by his supporters) as a force of nature, despite really being all-too-human. His temporary triumphs over the nuissances of political man appear a supernatural feat, a delusion that forms the basis of tragedy. One thinks (to strike a platitude) of Napoleon.

It's also good to thinka about the fact that this act was the final thing Goethe composed for Faust Part Two months before his death, meaning that the relatively generic scene where the Emperor is, a little dubiously, admonished by the Arch-Bishop for his alliance with Satan is the last major work of Goethe's; Walter Kaufmann claims that Goethe would surely have edited this substantially had he lived five more years, but this cagey scene invokes an uncertainty about the religious symbology that serves throughout as the far limit of the play's world, from the Easter Bells interrupting suicide to the final chorale in the heavens. Here, though, we are given maybe a little hint as to why Goethe spent his life in naturalist reverie and not protestant priesthood.

ACT FIVE
The coherent grounding of the plot falls apart here, with the inexpicable appearance of Baucis and Philemon in modern Germany and the apparitions of embodied affects outside the castle gates. The more expressionist, shifty tone is appropriate, given that the final evolution of Faust as a metaphysical tyrant is clear already by the end of the previous act; what remains is the abstract finale. The string of apocalyptic visions of the construction are striking, particularly as they gradually shift into demonic fanasies, but more subtle is Faust's encounter with the Eliotic hallucinations—visions come up to haunt the german spirit at the moment before its suicide, as perhaps Spengler or Mann might have seen it.We can leave it to Heidegger or any of his ilk to make a mountain out of Care being the one that finally gets Faust to savor a moment; that the phenomenology of positive care is something often missing from philosophies centered around will and mechanism is no secret. It seems to me reductive to think of Faust's weakness as rejecting meaning, and his finale as embracing it, but that's generally what seems to be the implication here ...

Okay, das Buch ist nichts für schwache Nerven. Sinn ist teilweise auch fragwürdig. ABER falls sie auf Fieberträume und 50 jährige Männer stehen, ist dieses Buch eine reine Herzensempfehlung. Meiner Meinung nach fand ich Faust manchmal ein bisschen zu ekelhaft, aber durch das Theaterstück fand ich ihn doch ganz reizvoll. Gretchen wird mir leider auch ein bisschen zu gaga, dennoch ein sympathisch Mädchen. Wäre ich mit ihr befreundet? Nein, aber sie ist ja auch Tot.
Fazit: Kann man machen, muss man nicht.

The worst of torments we can suffer
is to feel want when we are rich.

For a bit I was thinking this was going to get 3 stars, but it’s a 4-star book and probably a 5-star translation from what I can tell.

I actually read Part 1 a few years ago, and at the time definitely slogged through it just to complete it. Part 2 has me wanting to return to Part 1, and I’m sure I will, but not right now. The writing (/translation) is beautiful and while it’s pretty all-over-the-place at times, it was easy enough to follow along and appreciate the story and the quality of the writing.

My favorite thing about this book is that in Goethe’s version (but not in many, less famous others), Faust earns redemption through his striving, and is permitted into Heaven. Wow. Never did I see that coming, and it was such an uplifting ending that meant a lot to me as both an imperfect man and a Faust myself.

Faust does not part with its secrets easily - it is, by far, the most challenging book I've read in a very long time. To engage with Faust is to engage with Goethe throughout the entirety of his life - written over 60 years, it is a book that winds its way through life as few ever do, but as a result is a pastiche of greatest hits, fragmentary verses and half-finished thoughts. Some sections (I'm looking at you, Classical Walpurgis Night), remain completely inscrutable.

But I understand now why it is what it is - the most essential work of fiction in the German canon, Goethe's magnum opus, comprised of some of the most evocative scenes I've ever come across: both Part I and Part II reach a climax that is unparalleled...the translation scene...Gretchen in the Cathedral, in the Jail...Faust materializing a city from the sea...a monumental work.

In writing Faust, Goethe had two aims - first, as a young man, to create a powerful refutation of the Enlightenment academy and an ode to the raw feelings of Romanticism, and second, as an old man, to synthesize this microcosmic story with a macrocosmic synthesis to rival the great poets of antiquity: Homer, Virgil, Dante and Milton. In the first section, Faust is a man; in the second, he represents the personification of a rapidly industrializing society. Especially inspired by both Shakespeare and Milton, Faust emulates complex rhythms and rhymes that are nearly impossible to repeat in translated verse while his Gretchen, the Eternal Feminine, rhymes with Dante's Beatrice.

But the book is not English, Italian, or Greek - it is German, and proudly so, weaving in elements of secret pagan ritual and witchcraft underneath the surface of an overtly Christian society. Rather than celebrating thinking, the quantitative approach of the Enlightenment, or feeling, the qualitative anti-thesis of the Romantics, Goethe identified doing - deeds, acts, ambitions - as his highest ideal. And in its dramatic final act, he sanctifies terrible means in the service of that ideal - Faust, in any classical sense a villain, is redeemed by the purity of his motives, by the very striving that produced so much destruction.

Sound familiar?

Faust set in motion, along with Hegel - Goethe's contemporary and correspondent - an intellectual tradition that produced both the pugilistic nationalism which catalyzes both world wars and the utopian socialism which created modern communism. Both Nazi and Soviet ideologies celebrated Goethe and incorporated Faustian symbols - the elevation of ends over means; the tendency to justify the cracking eggs needed to make an omelette. "

Reading Faust, you feel in possession of a dangerous book. A book which, taken seriously, could justify atrocity. And you know, as a student of history, that it did so. And yet like Mephistopheles himself, Goethe tempts us to abandon our study and embrace true love (Gretchen), true feeling (Walpurgis Night), true action (The Palace), and true creation (The City). Will we answer his call?

We sit in a post-War Western culture that celebrates the Enlightenment and rejects the Romantics; our machine gods will think, but never feel. In our world, as in Goethe's, the Academy and its abstract logical palaces of the mind has become the gateway for ambitious youth and the arbiter of our most important ethical debates. The experts and their various Homunculi live real lives, but are never alive. We face a crisis of meaning surrounded by extraordinary wealth. And a crisis of purpose amongst the most elite members of our world, who have sublimated the development of their own desires and instead picked arbitrary ladders, and have reached the top - no more fulfilled than when they started the climd: play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

The digital world, the world of virtual places and infinite space, is not real. Intellectual achievements, the manipulation of words and symbols, will never satisfy the most elemental human desires. Financial achievements, the paper money which abnegates us of our responsibility to do the deed, to unearth the true gold, cannot substitute for the truly creative acts. Can the creative act - the striving - satisfy us? Or are we lost at sea.

The world is stuck. We need a new synthesis. We need a new movement. We need a new intellectual North Star.

Faust, in this moment, is a worthy challenge. As a text, it advocates an ideal. And as a creative act by Goethe, much of it written at the end of a long, celebrated career, it advocates the curation and creation of that ideal. His medium may not be our medium. But his task is our task, as scary as that may be.

I've then been re-reading my critical highlights to stay connected with the story.

As always, I also credit the conversation with my Book Club with unlocking a yet deeper understanding - Jesus the Carpenter as a builder and doer, Mephistopheles as a consummate nihilist, social media as Faust's study (just put down the phone), salvation through love not works, American culture as Goethe's synthesis of the sterile Enlightenment Brits and the feeling Romantic Germans.

Finally, as it relates to modern AI, the following quotes felt meaningful:

Will have to come back to this one - it's a tour de force that packs a lot in its story, with Part I taking heavy influence from Shakespeare and Part II turning into a kaleidoscopic take on classical mythos. Faust isn't quite a "character who things happen to" type, but he certainly reacts more than acts as the lines blur between reality and mythology (which can, in turn, bleed into occultism). The fact that this was written over almost 60 years is a testament to Goethe's development as an author and thinker, although it can leave the narrative feeling disjointed at times. Still, an essential read and one that promises to reveal more of itself to me with further reads.
