LoraMy mama said that the world was ending (again - because of course, once wasn't enough) and that the world would be renewed. I never believed her until I was sent to live with the creatures that had taken over the Earth, enslaved humans and scared us into hiding. Now I've met the beginning of the end and I have no doubt that he'll be my ruin, as well as the world's.GhursonI was sent to Earth for one reason and one reason alone. I knew what to expect and I understood what was expected of me. What I didn't anticipate in the mission I was given was that I would find a little thing like her, a woman so desperately in need of ruining that I managed to put the world ending on hold just so that I could consume her. I am utterly famished for her.
Lora’s world is on the cusp of collapsing. She decides to leave everything she knows behind and travel to the magic realm. She’s suppose to also help the rebellion while there. She’s been told from a young age that the magic realm is not a good place and they can’t be trusted. There she meets Dellon and he offers her a home while respecting her boundaries. Her bodyguard is Ghurston. She learns that he’s a higher being and must rely on him to keep the people she loves safe.
This was a different take on the Four Horseman. I do think the last part happened a little quickly, but I enjoyed the book. I’m interested to see how the other brother’s stories play out.
I was going to DNF this book but did end up finishing it because I really wanted to like it or find something out of it. I read this book because I am a fan of Darksiders and Laura Thalassa’s Horsemen books. I couldn’t connect with the world or the characters. I wanted the focus to be more on the Horseman and have more visual descriptions. Overall it isn’t a bad book but I did have a hard time focusing on it when with the topic it should have been an easy read. Things happened really quickly in this book and ended that way too. It almost seemed fast travel ish? That may have contributed to not being able to sit in the scene and really connect with what’s happening on a deeper level
I received an ARC of Famine in exchange for my honest review.
The world is ending. The crops are dying. The magical other worldly beings on ‘the other side’ are the cause or so the Church say.
Lora, a human who chooses to go to ‘the other side’ to help the Resistance and her family amidst a world of poverty. She discovers a world of grotesque monsters and half truths told by the Resistance and her family. She is forced to stay in this realm, choosing to go home with a magikal entity, Dellon.
Ghurson, a dark brooding entity, is assigned her body guard. Under his protection and guidance, Lora discovers that she is not just a human and that Ghurson is a higher being. Sparks fly between Ghurson and Lora initially as a slow burn as they discover they are so much more.
I really enjoyed this take on the Four Horse Men. The conclusion of the book left me wanting to read more and I cannot wait to continue reading the next book in the series. Thanks to JR Dust for including me in the ARC Team.
Well I've read JR Dust work before and I've enjoyed her other work. This past few months I've been struggling when reading. Honestly I don't remember much of the story of the book. It's not that it wasn't good it's just that I've been struggling on my end. It definitely kept me entertained throughout it. And more than likely I'll do a re-read later as the next books release. I do remember not following through the beginning of the story but I liked the characters. Ok now I'm rambling. Ok bye.
I had no idea what to expect, I went in blind and completely enjoyed this story! A paranormal dark apocalyptic romance 😈 The twists and storyline are captivating as well as the characters. Lora and Ghurson have instant chemistry which is complicated and also very hot. I cannot wait to read the next book!
Famine by J.R. Dust is the perfect dark and magical escape for readers craving a mix of apocalyptic tension, slow-burn romance, and a world on the brink of collapse.
When Lora crosses paths with Ghurson, a brooding, otherworldly being sent to Earth for one purpose, sparks fly—and not in the way you'd expect.
The chemistry between these two simmers beneath the surface, pulling you in with every page. Ghurson may have a mission, but Lora is the one thing he didn’t see coming, and their connection? It’s all kinds of deliciously dangerous.
The ending? Well, let’s just say you’ll be left craving more.
As the first in a series, Famine leaves certain storylines unresolved, but it sets the stage for bigger things to come. And if the twists and drama in this book are anything to go by, the rest of the series is going to be epic.
With twists that’ll keep you guessing and an ending that’ll leave you wanting to dive straight into the next installment, it’s a gripping start to the Horsemen and He series. 🔥
If you’re into: 🌍 Apocalyptic magic worlds 💀 Demon love interests with a protective streak 🔥 Slow-burn romance that sizzles once it hits 💥 High stakes, action, and spice
Then Famine is absolutely a must-read. Prepare to be consumed by Ghurson and Lora’s world—because once you dive in, you won’t want to come up for air.
*ARC Review. Thank you to J.R. Dust for a copy of Famine in exchange for an honest review. Here are my thoughts
Famine is a new romantasy novel that follows Lora, a human, that is left with no other option but to travel to the magik realm. In this universe, humans are impoverished and live separately from the magik beings. If they pass The Testing, they can choose to go over to the magik realm, and if chosen by a magik being, they remain on the other side while their human family receives a salary.
Lora is part of the resistance and is sent over to the magik realm. Her family says their goodbyes and look forward to the allowance that they'll receive. Upon arriving on the other side, Lora discovers that they've been lied to and that the magik beings are grotesque monsters and give humans no choice to return to their human realm. Left with no options, Lora decides to go with Dellon, a magik beast that was on a list of beings to avoid given to her by the resistance.
Upon arriving at Dellon's home, she is left in the care of her guard, Ghurson. Lora quickly discovers that Ghurson is a higher being and not at all like the other magiks. Since this is a romantasy, I'll let you fill in the blanks on what happens there. 😏
This was a fun read and while there were a few things left unexplained, this is only book one in the series so I suspect we'll get more details later. I found Lora to be a decent main character. Her inner monologue wasn't immature or annoying as some can be when they are younger main characters (Lora is 22). She made reasonable decisions and she acted responsibly and fairly in her dealings with other magik beings. The story is also told from Ghurson's point of view and he's likable as well. He's one of the four horsemen and you get a bit of his backstory in this book as well.
I'm giving this a bit higher spice rating as well because there was quite a bit of detail in the 🌶️ scenes. Reader beware and read your trigger warnings.
The book comes out soon and I look forward to reading the next book in the series from this author.
Let me start by saying I haven’t read very many fantasy romance books so I wasn’t sure what to expect out of this or that I’d even like it. THIS BOOK BLEW ME AWAY!
This story is based off the 4 horseman and is the first in the series. We start by meeting Lora, the daughter of a poverty stricken family who is asked to make the decision to cross over into the Otherside in an attempt to save her family and gather details for a covert mission. What she didn’t expect was how amazing the otherside actually would be and that all of the awful things they’d been told weren’t actually true at all. Will she be able to complete her mission and the reason for going to the otherside?
Gurdson is the MMC and a magikal being. He is tasked with being Lora’s guard (and trainer) and although he dislikes her and is clearly annoyed by her, he cannot deny his attraction to her. Gurdson has his own mission but the feelings he’s developing for Lora are making that mission seem impossible to follow.
The story line and character building were great. Again, fantasy romance has never been my thing so as someone new to this style of book I felt like this story was easy to follow and there was no confusion in understanding the differing worlds or keeping up with the developments. However, I did feel like some aspect of this story were rushed and that I had wished for more information. This is something I have said before in this authors writing.
Overall, if you love a slow burn, touch her and die, age gale, fantasy romance… you’ll like this. I can’t wait to see what happens in the rest of the series.
This is my first J.R. Dust book and I absolutely loved it!!! This book was captivating and I really enjoyed the story line. I tend to stay away from fantasies because I have a hard time with world building and keeping all the other creatures and humans straight in my head, but this wasn't hard or complicated at all. The world building in this was really easy to understand. The writing was so descriptive that I was able to picture everything perfectly. Lora and Ghurson's work so well together. I love how protective he is, but she is also no damsel. She's not afraid and never backs down. There was a part near the end when her family came to live with her that I think should have been a bigger deal because it was (I think) I defining moment in her life to understand where she came from and why she was the way she was... but I feel like that part was rushed and moved on from fairly quickly. I just wished for a little more out of that scene. But I overall really enjoyed this book. I can't wait for the next in the series. The story ends unresolved, but as this is only book 1 in the series, it's to be expected. I can't wait to read more from J.R. Dust.
Let me start off with “WOW!!” 🤩. At first I was not expecting this to be amazing at all. I was a bit indecisive to begin reading this book since I’ve read other books from J.R and those books weren’t bad at all just not something I’d prefer reading. However, I decided to push forward with an open mind and I’m so HAPPY 🤗 I did. I was immediately hooked. Author does state her writing is different regarding how some words were spelled etc. For me I’m not used to seeing the word “Arse” so in my mind I sort of replace it with what I’m used to in U.S wording. Sorry J.R. Although the difference in wording did NOT deter me from continuing this book. I fell in LOVE 😍 with the main characters so much that I wish there was more to them at the end. The story buildup was there. Only thing that tugged me was the world ending and so forth. Overall this was an amazing read with spicy 🥵 scenes that I’m definitely not opposed to reading 🤭. I’m just sad that there wasn’t more to them. Like a book 2 or something. I did see that this is Book 1 of 10. 😫
So readers… if you’re debating whether to read this DON’T!!
3.5 ⭐️ on the fence of rounding up or down for this one. I didn't 100% hate it but didn't love it either, somewhere in between for sure.
Lora's world is on the verge of ending.....again. She decides to leave the world she has always know behind and go to the magik world even though she's always been told that it is a evil bad place. While there she needs a bodyguard, in comes Ghurston. She finds out that he is a higher being and things begin to get interesting between them.
I really liked the concept of this but I just could not connect with the characters or the world they were in. Even with it only being the first in a series, if I connect with characters or the world setting it would be by the end of the first book and this one I just couldn't. There were several parts that felt extremely rushed. There are also a lot of things left unexplained but it is only first in the series so hopefully they will be explained in later books.
Humans are dying, because crops aren't growing, there's massive poverty, and there's not much hope. They blame the magical beings for their problems. A lot of humans listen and believe the church, that the four Horsemen are coming and Famine is the first, meaning the world is coming to an end. Question is, is all of it true?
Lora, the FMC, decides to go to the party on The Other Side, the non-human side, where magical creatures choose a human from a small selection of men and women.
Ghurson, the MMC, is a demon on The Other Side. He's been assigned as Lora's personal guard. He's gruff, and short with her at the beginning.
I loved watching Ghurson warm up to Lora, and Lora opening up to him. Their back-and-forth was entertaining, and had me laughing out loud. The spice was spicing. I enjoyed the pacing, too, it felt like the right speed. I want to say a lot more, but I don't want to ruin any surprises or the story. Just, go for it, and give Famine a try.
I didn't want the story to end, but I'm so excited to continue the series.
This was (personally) a completely new take on the concept of the four horsemen of the apocalypse in a dystopian world with humans trying to survive the horrors of demons who found their way on the planet.
The worldbuilding was okay, with so much more waiting to be fleshed out. As this is the first of a 10-book series. I’m excited to see where the author is going with this. The plot is, as I’ve said, a fresh take (at least for me) on the four horsemen in a fantasy with demons vs humans. It’s a bit of a slow starter, but given it’s a 10-book series, I think it’s just about right.
Lora was a lot of things. She is very loyal to her family and easily adaptable and open-minded to the many changes of her life. Like. Very. Open-minded. But she’s strong, and she needs that in this new environment.
The romance was a little instant-attraction and lust, though still somehow slow burn. It was really good and hot to read with them.
I have read all 3 of JR Dust’s previous books, and loved them all. This one is a different genre for her and I loved it. This book is a fantasy, has world building, is a slow burn, and left me looking forward to book 2.
I was hesitant to read this one because I have never been in to fantasy books. Harry Potter was my only experience and I read those years ago when my son was little. So being a fantasy newby, this book has opened a whole new reading world for me.
Her descriptions of characters and the world were created in such a way that I could easily picture them in my mind. The book kept my attention, has characters that I immediately liked and cheered for, and did have a HEA. The Epilogue gives a glimpse into book 2 in the series.
If you are looking for a fantasy series, this book is for you. If you are a newby to fantasy, I recommend you give this one a try. If you are just looking for an escape book, this one fits the bill! I highly recommend this book.
I love this take on the four horseman! It’s a great first step into fantasy if you find yourself interested in the genre but not sure you’re ready for the full blown romantasy experience. The storyline was great, characters are likable and the spice is spicy!
The only thing that made this book lose a star is length. While I love a good quick read, fantasy books are often very large so the author can go into incredible detail for the sake of world building. While the author does world build, it’s not quite at the level you need to truly immerse yourself in the story. This book would have been a 5 star read for me if it was roughly 150-200 pages longer to get into more detail about the FMCs training, their relationship/attraction and the magik she finds herself having. Also the MMC is Famine but decided to choose the name Ghurson which isn’t exactly the most sexy choice lol
Overall a great book especially for someone who is just getting into fantasy.
This isn't my first book by this author i throughly enjoyed her contemporary books already and I'm so glad she decided to dive into fantasy/supernatural/gods/demons/other worldly almost sci-fi tropes of world ending, fated mating horsemen of the appocoypse! Honestly been an absolute ride. Lora is a level headed, hard working family gal living in a factioned/divided world where monsters and demons have taken over after great wars. Having the option to say goodbye to her family forever and cross the divide to live amongst the other worldly creatures, Lora embarks on eye opening experiences and adventures finding truths she never knew and making connections she'd of once thought impossible. Ghurson is a brooding character that will melt your heart as he discovers just exactly who Lora is to him and what changes his life will undertake with her in it. Camt wait to meet the other brothers. 10/10 recommend. 5⭐️ 3🌶

Famine is the first book in the Four Horsemen & He series. This is a fantasy romance based on the four horsemen. Lora finds herself participating in an event to get her to the other side, even though it’s the last thing she wants to do but she feels obligated to help the Resistance. What she didn’t expect was to be left on her own with her “new” family. Ghurson is on Earth to complete his mission to fulfill his duties as a higher being and to possibly find his person. Being assigned as Lora’s guard, Ghurson finds himself discovering little tells that Lora is more than she seems to be and that she might just be the one. The more time Lora spends with Ghurson, the more her powers and emotions come to light. As the End comes to Earth, Ghurson’s true identity is discovered and the reasons behind the End. This story is full of self discovery, realizations, truths, emotions and spice. Great start to a new series and I can’t wait to see what comes next!!!
I've often read reviews for books and then read the book only to find the reviews give the whole story. There is no mystery. But we also need to know about a book to see if it's what interests us.
JR Dust writes this book brilliantly. I find myself enthralled with the main female Lora and how she deals with the life around her and the people around her. The choices she's made and the effects of those choices. I love the narrative and her innocence of the unknown. But as innocent as she seems she takes no prisoners when her mind is made. I absolutely fell in love with the male lead, who was brought in as her guardian. If you like dark romance, slow Burn, magic, and other worldy beings with light laughter and spice and all things wicked this is the book for you. Already waiting to devour the next installment. 10/10 recommend
Thank you, JR Dust, for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading Famine. The different concept of the Four Horsemen story is refreshing & creative. The book is very fast-paced and kept me entertained the entire time.
Lora & Ghurson have amazing chemistry from the very beginning. I love Ghurson's protectiveness over Lora, but she's a badass FMC and really holds her own. Their discussion about feelings, emotions, & love is probably my favorite part of the entire story.
The only reason I did not give Famine 5 stars is because certain parts of the story felt rushed and/or incomplete at times. While the story is a quick read, some scenes/stories need to be explained a little more.
Overall, I highly recommend Famine, and I'm very excited to follow the other Horsemen brothers!
I really did enjoy this book. I would rate 4.5/5. It took me a little longer than usual to get through it but I think it’s because there were parts I just couldn’t figure out what was happening. I think some of the things needed just a little more explaining. I did see where this book is the beginning of a long set of stories so I find that exciting. I also think that if I could jump right into the next book this wouldn’t feel as much like to much is left unsaid. So many things happened but I needed just a little more detail to fully understand them I think. Overall the concept and story are excellent and I look forward to reading more as they come out. This is a pretty good start to what is sure to be a really great set of books.
I really enjoyed this book! It is book one of The Four Horsemen and He series. The concept of this book was very intriguing. The author did a great job at building and creating this world with an otherworldly side to it. I loved how unpredictable this book was. I was kept on my toes throughout and found myself shocked at some points. Once everything about the Four Horsemen and their missions was laid out…it kind of makes you think about our world today and gives an eerie sense of resemblance. The end of the book left me wanting but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. That just means I need book two!!
What to expect: Soulmates The Four Horsemen Possessive MMC Hidden Power Otherworldly Gods Monsters Spice 🔥
I’m a little confused with my feelings on this book. These are the hardest reviews for me to write when I’m left feeling like this.
The book started out great. It had a concise plot and I was loving it. Some things came up that added to the plot which was great. But I felt like I was left wanting as the book ended.
It was hard for me to picture Famine in his true form which left a disconnect for me.
The spicy scenes were great and the growing connection between the characters is what kept me reading. But for me, there was no conclusion of the story that made sense, no closure. I know this will be a series and I hope the next book will put things in perspective for me.
I liked Famine, the first in the four horsemen and he series , however for me it was the connection between the main characters, Lora and Ghurson, that kept me reading. It started out slow until you get mid way through the book then it picks up pace to which things start happening quickly. I felt like many of my questions were answered but at the same time there were things I was left wondering about. Ghurson’s true form for example, I feel it was hard to imagine what he looks like. Aside from that it is a good book and I did enjoy it once I got to the mid way point as I tend to like a little more of a faster paced book.
I love a horseman story but this is a different take on that, it’s driving focus was not on the horseman in this book. There is no direct focus on what famine is doing or how he is doing his work, it focuses on lora her experiences and the lies each side of the barrier is told bout the other as well as the demon and magic elements. That wasn’t a bad thing it just may not be what people expect when they go into the book.
I was invested, the plot worked well and I can’t wait to read the other books that will be in the series.
I loved the concept of the four horseman. I haven’t read any others like it so it was a good first read for me.
I liked the characters but wanted a little more from some of them. It felt like some of their stories were cut short and we didn’t get the whole thing. One in particular, Ghursons demon, seemed like he was going to play a much bigger part but then seemed to be forgotten.
This was very intriguing and kept my interest throughout wanting to know what was going to happen next. I’m excited to read about Plague next!
Lora and Ghurson I think the storyline was original and interesting. The whole idea and world behind it kept me invested. We had some drama, action, a bit of mystery, lots of magic, and spice.
I liked both, Lora and Ghurson. I think their relationship developed naturally. While i consider it a slower burn, I felt it fit with the plot perfectly. However, once the steam starts it is fire!!
Overall, I really enjoyed it. I also liked the twist at the end. Now, I'm ready for Plague.
Check trigger warnings!!! And if they don’t bother you, dive in! While this is a new genre for JR, this book kept me on my toes. It kept me intrigued and glued to the pages. I devoured this book. Literally could not put it down. The world building and story line were done very well. It is a different take on fantasy but so worth the read. Plus you get. happily ever after and an epilogue sneak peek at book 2 :)
Wow I disagree with a few other reviewers who say Famine should have been more about the horsemen and less about… well I guess everything else. Could there have been MORE of the horsemen aspects? Sure! But theres three more books in this series guys, and we gotta realize Lora was human, she didn’t know anything about that world. I found Famine to be fabulously written. It’s exactly what I needed. Thank you JR Dust.
It took me a few chapters to find the return to dive in to this story. That being said, once I was hooked, I read the entire thing in one sitting! I love the idea of the terrifying horsemen being sent out to find their other half. The magic, mystery and spice has left me anxiously awaiting the next part
Great book, a slow start but a great read. Humans only hope for a possibility of a better life is to become property of monsters. Lora decides her family needs the money she will do what's needed. While in the world of Monsters she meets Ghurson her guardian. While spending so much time together they both notice their time together isn't unbearable.
