Rate this book
Lady by day Bandit by Night

For six years Lady Rowan of Lockersley looked forward to the day she'd return home to the picturesque village of her childhood.

But when she and her friend, Lady Jane, rode into the village, what they saw was anything but picturesque. Not only had the village fallen into poverty but Rowan learned that her beloved father, Laird of Lockersley was dead.

With the help from her band of friends, Rowan devises a plan to take back the money her uncle stole through excessive taxes on the villagers under the dark of night and act the perfect lady by day.

That is until her uncle announces that she is to wed the victor of a tournament held in her honor.

Rowan knew she would marry but believed it would be her choice̶—marry for love or duty—not as a trophy given to a stranger.

Rowan knows she belongs with her merry band of bandits, especially the one who stole her heart. But can she keep her secrets hidden from her uncle long enough to save her village and her future?

Can she save her people before she's handed off as a prize? Will her heart lead her to duty or to the arms of her fellow bandit? And when masks fall away, which Rowan will remain—the lady or the outlaw?

Cursed by Bandits is book six in the Once Upon a Curse book series.

For new adults that are fans of The Forest Queen, Brave, A Knight's Tale and Ella the Enchanted.

This was a creative retelling that was a mix of Brave, and a gender swapped robin hood, with a strong female lead taking control of her future and trying to save her people.
Rowan returns home to find news of her father's death, her hometown's ruin, and her Uncle in control of everything, including plans for her future husband.
She needs to act the part of a dutiful and obedient Lady in the day to trick her Uncle, whilst using her bandit alter ego to free her town and steal back its riches for the poor.
With suitors lining up for Lady Rowan, her uncle tries to convince her to marry the Evil Sheriff of Nottingham, but Rowan manages to negotiate a tournament for her hand.
With a group of loyal allies at her side Rowan plans to win the contest so she can choose her own destiny and overthrow her uncle at the same time.
This is a fun and fast paced adventure, with dangers, contests, scheming and bravery, and a sweet slow burn romance.

What a book and what an adventure 🔥

This was such an exciting and fun book to read, full of action, mischief and secrets.

Rowan's come back to her found family was a rollercoaster for sure but was so good and with this characters that are so easy to love just makes it all so much better. I really enjoyed go through the story and get to know this different sides of each character.

With these gotta say that I loved Milo so much, love is personality, the cute and protective side with his scientist mind too it's just perfect, then Rowan character, the ways she goes to change what she sees wrong and help her people even if it gets tuff and she doesn't give up, it really shows how strong she is and finally Lady Jane, all her strong nature and such a supportive friend that gets in her mischief and at the same time keeps her grounded and focus i think is such a good relation between them and such a trio.

And we still have so much... some characters that I think would give such a story, it makes me imagine for sure and I love that it's like the story doesn't has an end.

And can we talk about the mix of Robin Hood and Brave? Such a good explore for this retelling.
And the tournament... So so captivating and so suspenseful. There was so much to look for and happening it was so crazy and brilliant. Can't say everything goes perfect but I just will love to read it and couldn't stop.

I am so incredibly grateful to have received an advanced copy of Cursed by Bandits by Stephanie Clemens.

Cursed by Bandits is a read that I was super excited for when I read the blurb because of the combo of Robin Hood and the Merry Men of Misfits. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. I sadly wasn't able to connect with Rowan and it made me hard for me to enjoy the book and the overall story. I did enjoy the change of who the love interest is. It wasn't somebody I suspected and I found that so truly refreshing. I did also enjoy the writing style, the plot and the twists and turns. Overall, it was fun and quick read!

Absolutely fantastic NEW take on Robin Hood!!! There were some slowish spots but not enough to bog down the read. Loved that Lady Rowan is unstoppable, a firecracker! I love that we get to see some of the traditional story, but with some twists and turns. Connor, Milo, Tuck, Emma and Lady Jane are fantastic side characters that become great friends to Rowan. Loved it - a little spice with a lot of attitude. Love that Rowan is a strong, capable heroine that doesn't stop even when it gets tough!

This ain't your granny's ole time story about Robin Hood! We got a genderbend story with lots of action, heart, and a little bit of revenge!

Rowan, our MFC, will NOT be told what to do and who to marry, and she will stop at nothing to help those that need it!!
It's Rowans' world, and we are just living in it !

This was a fun book to read. Think of this a Robinhood but the female version. Lady Rowan has many different sides and she is willing to do for her people. On the other hand, she has a different role when it comes to figuring out her feelings for Milo. 5/5 recommend it.

I really wanted to like this and am sad that I didn't. The concept of Maid Marian is Robin Hood was really intriguing, but I never connected with Rowan and the ending felt really rushed and unsatisfying.

Another great adventure from Stephanie K. Clemens!

This gender-swapped Robin Hood retelling is so much fun! Rowan, our Robin Hood character, returns home after years of being away studying at a nunnery, and finds that her father has been killed and her townsfolk are suffering under heavy taxes to support her uncle, who has taken her father’s place as the Laird of Lockersley. Not only that, but in an effort to cement his rank, her uncle seeks to remove Rowan as a threat by marrying her off, since she is the rightful ruler of Lockersley.

What ensues is a fun, fast, and feminist tale of adventure as Rowan works to save her people and herself from her uncle’s tyranny. A great fantasy adventure set in a Scotland-inspired setting, Cursed by Bandits is a fun read for anyone, and especially those who enjoy social justice themes without heavy handed preaching.

There is some open door spice! 🌶️

I had high hopes when I read the blurb. Who doesn't like a reimagining of Robin Hood and his Merry Men of misfits. Right? Unfortunately, for me, this wasn't it. It didn't deliver what I was hoping for. And not b/c we have a young woman in the main role either. The idea was there, but the world building, the delivery of the story left many plot holes, things that happened, that seemed to be left with no clear resolution. It was there... and then forgotten. Like the gold being stolen from the Uncle's room as he slept. Or the tax money being traded with rocks while Rowan and Jane were there with the Sheriff aka tax collector. And nobody said anything. The sheriff and uncle never spoke about it. You're going to let that go? Villians don't do that.🫢🤐 Ever. The story doesn't run smooth. It raises more questions than answers.

We have Rowan, she wasn't very likable imo. She's 21 and has a one track mind. Her ideas, her plans, and if you don't share your side plans with her, she then feels betrayed? I didn't get that at all. She's been at a nunnery for 6yrs and I guess the sisters there taught her hand to hand combat, sword fighting, and jousting? Nothing was elaborated. Nothing. You're told she's been trained.🤷🏻 Lady Jane, aka Little John, trained with her. She comes with Rowan to her home to Lockersley. Where the small community is in dire straits with high taxes from her Uncle Jonathan and his Sheriff of Notthinghamshire, Jocelin. Her Father Richard has passed away suspiciously 6 months prior. Rowan didn't know. The nuns kept quiet. Or her Uncle didn't care to tell them? Again, I don't know. And what about 'the incident' that Rowan and Jane spoke of. No clue. It's there. Then mentioned again. Then gone. Why mention it if it isn't going to relate to the story somehow?

We have Friar Tuck and Will Skarlee, you know who they are from the original tale, but they're really not in the story as much. Rowan and her team stole from her rich Uncle and always got it right somehow. Maybe if there were other rich people in the land too? She also enters a high stakes medieval tournament, you know get the gold, help her people, under the guise as a man named 'Robin'. She beat men in the challenges 2 times bigger than her. She couldn't beat Jane in the beginning, but now she beat these dudes?🙄 Even in a Knight's Tale, William Thatcher had to train over and over and still messed up. Rowan...again, didn't. Nun training!!!🤣🤺🤣 Wow. Who knew. Why were Rowan's clothes always ill-fitted? There was a lot written about that over and over.🤔🤨 Strange.

Two love interests. Rowan was willing to hold onto both just in case one didn't work out over the other one.😬 Prince Connor. And inventor Milo. Connor is a prince of where exactly? I don't know. Milo. I liked him. The only character aside from the horse Artie and the dog Rogue. How many times can you make Milo fall with over-done clumsiness?? It wasn't cute. Poor science dude. The very very tamed spice felt out of place. Awkward. I almost didn't finish it. This didn't work for me. I'm sorry. It missed the mark.

🏰🏹Thank you to Ms Clemens and Bookfunnel for an early book. These are my honest thoughts on this story.🏹🏰

I actually really enjoyed this book. It's a female-led re-telling of Robin Hood.
The book begins with Rowan packing up on her last day at a nunnery, where she's been taught how to fight as well as the more traditional skills of a Lady.
She and her friend, Lady Jane, head to her home of Lockersly.
But when they arrive, instead of finding a quaint village and her father, Rowan's home has become run-down, and the people are desperate and starving.
Worse, Rowan's father, the Laird, is dead and Uncle Johnathan has taken the throne. He is taxing the people of Lockersly weekly, with the Sheriff of Nottinghamshire acting as his enforcer.
Once Rowan arrives at the castle, Johnathan seems determined to marry her off, preferably to the Sheriff. But Rowan is more interested in Milo, her childhood friend or maybe Prince Connor.
Despite Rowan's pleas that she needs to mourn her father, Johnathan throws her a banquet, then a ball.
Rowan sees all the left over food from the banquet and knowing her people are starving successfully sneaks it out of the castle and to the town. She meets Friar Tuck, Erin, and a few others.
With the help of Milo, Jane, and the others - Rowan robbed her Uncle of his ill-gotten gains and distributes the money to the townsfolk.
Johnathan is not amused. He decides there will be a tournament in Lockersly and the winner will marry Rowan.
Rowan is rightfully angered by this and decides to compete incognito as Robin. She competes in many events: hand-to-hand combat, Jousting, Archery (her best) and other sports. In the end, she wins.
But when Robin reveals she is Rowan - Johnathan goes ballistic. He has Robin arrested and locked in the tower, promising he will force her to marry the Sheriff.
Jane and Milo help Rowan escape and hide in the woods. They decide to take the evidence they have against Johnathan and present it to Connor who presents it to his father, the King.
The King decides there is enough proof to hold a trial in Lockersly. Rowan and others testify, Laird Richard's nurse arrives and Laird Richard reveals he isn't dead. Johnathan and the Sheriff are arrested and Rowan becomes Lady of the Castle.
I enjoyed this story very much, but I've always been a fan of Robin Hood stories. My only criticism was it felt a bit too modern at times. The modern language and slang was jarring at times. Not always but at times it was like, um - not in the 14th century or so.
Overall, I liked it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 🌶️🌶️

I loved this reimagined story of Robin Hood! With the role of Robin Hood being replaced by a female, the gender swapping to this beloved story was the shakeup it needed. It definitely held vibes of Brave as well. Strong female characters throughout this book remind us the beauty of female rage, women are not to be messed with, and the damsel in distress trope is played out.

Rowan has just returned home after being away for six years. In these past six years she has undergone education, training, and other experiences. She returns though to her family torn apart, her home in shambles, and her uncle one of the mains reasons behind all the change. As she reconnects with friends, she puts together a plan to give back to the people, the way her father ran things before his untimely passing.

Although romance does have a place in this book, it comes second in this story. Stephanie definitely focuses more on Rowan’s mission to save her people vs finding love. But don’t worry. Our two romantic interests are swoon worthy! I do love how Rowan is definitely in charge of the love triangle and isn’t the one being pulled around by two men. She is the one making the decision for her and her alone. Especially when her uncle declares a tournament where she is the prize.

Nope, she isn’t a prize to be won for any man. This is the where the Brave vibes hit hard.
As mentioned earlier, I really enjoyed this reimagined story by Stephanie and her emphasis on strong female characters being their own heroes. Her world building is descriptive, easily imagined, and draws you into Rowan’s world with ease. The found family theme in this book is wonderful. Rowan needed them as much as they needed her. Great story you will thoroughly enjoy!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

Rowan is looking forward to going home. She has been away for six years, education and training well spent along with creating unbreakable friendships but she is ready to come home. However, her homecoming is not what she expected. She finds her father gone, her uncle ruining the people and land she is sworn to protect, and highly inaccurate rumors about herself. Rowan is determined to fix the damage and reclaim what is hers. What starts as simple spying turns into thievery, mischief, and double identities. Will the bandit in her save the day or ruin her before she can?

A genderbent retelling of Robin Hood with some of the characters changed to fit the narrative. We have our merry men and women who will stop at nothing to save their homes and land and can clearly see the injustice being done by Uncle Jonathan and the sheriff he is controlling. Rowan’s plot moves a bit fast at times but is able to be understood. Lady Jane, who is our Little John, always seems to know what Rowan needs, always. Which I found a bit too much in magically knowing and reading everything. I get that they have been friends for years and can read each other well but it seems that things just magically happened through Jane at times. I did enjoy the change of who the love interest is, it wasn’t the usual suspect and that was refreshing. The end also felt a little rushed, again not in a way I couldn’t understand but in a way that it just came together really well really fast. As for the cursed theme there wasn’t a magical curse but she is cursed with the threat of her double identity consuming and ruining her. Ultimately, a quick and enjoyable read with characters I can understand.

Who doesn't like a Robin Hood retelling? There's something alluring about "bandits" doing good, not that I condone any type of theft, but the downtrodden need a hero or two... and it comes in an unusual guise. I was aware the entire time that I was reading a Robin Hood retelling, but with some innovative tweaks. Confused? Well.... read it to see what I mean....

Rowan's homecoming is nothing like she anticipated. 6 years earlier she'd been sent to the Nunnery to study, waiting for the day she could return home to her father, to the splendour she'd been forced to leave behind. Only to discover her father had passed, and her home wasn't the vibrant, joyful place it once was. And the scheming begins, to discover the truth, to best her uncle and expose him, which led to some fun moments, like the disguise Rowan uses, like the tournament. Milo is so sweet and I enjoyed the "reignition" of their romance. I liked the characters, especially Rowan and Jane, both feisty and strong as well as Milo and Connor. The whole mystery surrounding Rowan's father came full circle splendidly. I enjoyed the familiarity of Friar Tuck and Will and the support Rowan gets from all those around her.

I did however find a few events I wish were given clarity. For instance, I have to admit I was a bit taken aback by Rowan calling her best friend Lady Jane, not something a best friend does. And Rowan kept on referring to "the incident" so, obviously, I was dying to know what it was, but it was never explained. The best way I can describe this book is, sweet and cute. To me, a very light hearted read that kept to the bones of the original. A quick and entertaining read.

Such a fun retelling of Robin Hood!

I love how the author created a fun twist on a classic story. There are very few fairy tales where the female lead character is the story's heroine. Lady Rowan was sent away to a nunnery for her training for six years by her father to prepare her to lead her people only it is not a nunnery where she is trained to be a lady. When she returns home she brings her best friend Jane and she returns to her beloved town in shambles and the life is gone from her people. She connects with old friends and creates a plan to help her people and save them from her horrible uncle who took over ruling after the kingdom was told her father had died. Her uncle declares a tournament to win Lady Rowan's hand in marriage and she decides to enter herself in disguise to take control of her destiny. There is a little bit of spice in this book so it is not one for children so keep that in mind. Pick it up if you are looking for a light read and fairy tale where the woman fights to save herself instead of waiting to be rescued!

Rowan is returning to her beloved kingdom after her education at a warrior nunnery, upon her return she discovers things are not as she left and her father is dead.

I have a few issues with this book. A lot felt open ended, unexplained or just didn’t make any sense to the narrative.

The warrior nunnery barely comes into play. The characters are pretty one dimensional. The relationship has zero chemistry and was juvenile and bumbling for 90% of it all.

The tournament was a fun idea but was rushed.

I like the bones and the premise of this story. I just wish it was more in depth and explored. The characters could have used some more time and attention to make them lovable instead of relying on the knowledge of the original Robin Hood.

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an ARC of this book. This is my honest review.

Wow, just wow. Cursed by Bandits is an amazing adventure story retelling of Robin Hood I have to say Stephanie can really tell a story, it just sucked me in and I didn’t want to stop reading.

The characters are just so amazing, the story line is well written and you won’t be bored it has action, suspense, spice, love story, evil uncle and his henchman. It’ll have you on the edge of your seat.

Follow the story of Rowan a lady that got sent away to learn stuff she couldn’t from her father, she met another woman at that nun sanctuary name Jane. When she comes home and finds out her dad is gone, and her uncle is destroying her town with his greed she wants to stop him. She also sees her childhood crush again Milo. So this story has it all, read you won’t be disappointed!

A cozy and safe read!! If you're needing something full of adventure and full of story, then check this out!! It's a twist on robinhood where the lady of the land saves her people. She has the love and support from her friends and with them is able to accomplish so much!! She is a true baddie and doesn't need anyone to save her but isn't foolish enough to realize she needs help. Milo is literally so dreamy and was the perfect book boyfriend. If you're wanting something with a supportive mmc and problems are resolved quickly then you'll love this!! It made my heart happy reading this.

Thank you for the arc!!

Prepare for a thrilling retelling of the classic tale of Robin Hood! In this version, Lady Rowan takes on the persona of Robin as she battles for her own freedom in marriage and fights to save the village of Lockersley. The relationships in this retelling are powerful and humorous, making for an enjoyable read. However, I was left eagerly wanting to uncover the mystery of "the event." I anticipated that it would be revealed later in the story, adding more depth to the plot, but unfortunately, that didn't happen.

I received this as an ARC copy in return for my honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Overall: 4⭐️/5; Spice 1.5 🌶️/5

This was a fantastic Robin Hood retelling! (Though honestly, I could easily have been a retelling of Brave as well.) Rowan is a badass FMC, and her sole focus is finding justice for her father and her people. The side characters that make up her found family are well written and interesting - I especially loved Lady Jane - and while there were multiple romantic options, the author did not distract us from Rowan’s mission with love-triangle drama. There is just enough spice to keep this story solidly OUT of the YA category, though it reminded me a lot of Cinder and The Hunger Games in both tone and writing style. I think fans of both YA and romantasy will find something to love in this book. Overall, a solid addition to the Once Upon A Curse series!

Thanks to the author, Stephanie Clemens, and the Once Upon a Curse PR team for an advanced copy to review!

I was really excited for this next part in the Once upon a curse series. Robin Hood is such a inspiring fairytale and I was really excited about this retelling. It will feature a gender swap and is about getting justice. What will Cursed by Bandits have in store for it’s readers?

This retelling is really awesome. I loved Rowans personality and loved her strong mind. The addition of the nunnery is really unique. The storyline has a good build as well as amazing worldbuilding. Cursed by Bandits really stayed true to it’s original fairytale, even though there is a genderswap

I don’t want to say very much because it will give it away….
I did struggle to get into this enough to sit and read it; however after a couple short reading sessions I got to a point that sucked me in, and it didn’t take very long. This is a create gender swapping retell of Robin Hood. I’m here for a strong FMC. There are great supporting characters and the background is built very well. I’m one of those people that puts myself in the role of who I’m reading and I could definitely do that here. The twist at the end though really surprised me and my jaw literally fell open. Don’t miss this one!

I absolutely adored this book. Lady Rowan and Lady Jane are a riot together. Lady Rowan goes through a lot on her journey, both emotionally and physically, and what a journey it is! A ball, thievery, a tournament and more. This action packed book is also full of romance. Lady Rowan has more than one suitor, and although she chooses one I hope that some of the others will eventually get their happily ever afters in future books.

With fantastic storytelling, marvelous characters, and incredible action, this gender bent Robinhood retelling will surely be one of your favorites too.

This was a really fun book to read. You get to see so many different sides of Lady Rowan, and what she is willing to do for her people. A very inspiring story of a woman trying to take back her town, while not only playing different roles but figuring out her feelings for Milo. He is such a sweetheart and is very supportive of Rowan. I also need to mention how much I love Jane and how everyone deserves a friend like her. This book was so good. If you like alternate personalities, a strong female character, and trials then this book is for you!!

4.5☆ really.
This Robin hood retelling was a nice, quick read. It had action and just a dash of 🌶. I can't imagine a way to do a retelling of Robin hood without it being predictable, so with that being said I understand why it's predictable. The characters had great personalities and I loved the banter between them all. I love Milo! He's exactly the kind of guy a strongheaded female like Rowan needs. He's smart, supportive, and cute. Jane is the best friend every girl wishes for. If you're looking for an easy read, this is your book.

Cursed by Bandits was a whole different read for me, but was very unique and different.

I loved the aspect of it being a Robin Hood retelling, but let "Robin" be a woman instead. Rowan was a great character choice and really made the storyline enjoyable for me. I loved that her personality really stood out and that she was intelligent, making plans and taking action. Most retellings I have read never allow a female character lead, but this one did! Love the plot twists and how Stephanie wrote the story from beginning to end. I would easily read another retelling by her in the future.

This is a fantastic retelling of the classic Robin Hood! Told with the authors twist you find yourself drawn into an incredible world of bandits, secrets, baddies, good guys and kick ass heroine who steps in to save the day. After being away for so long, Rowan is looking forward to going home but finds everything has been turned on its head in her absence. With her friend and band of merry bandits, Rowan fights to save the village and take back from her uncle what isn’t his before her secret is discovered or she is forced to marry a total stranger or duty. A fantastic read!

This is Robin hood inspired stored but make him a lady
I'm loving it so far, her uncle is an absolute
jerk and so is the sheriff but then they are supposed to be but yea imagine coming back after 6 years to everything changed and your village starving. because your uncle is a greedy ahole. the dude literally hoarded money to himself that the village could have used and claimed he used it on Rowan when she was at the nunnery.....the nerve.
Also a HEA as well fyi.

What a refreshing spin on this Robin Hood retelling where Robin of Locksley is actually Lady Rowan of Lockersley. Rowan is a very strong FMC. The only thing I wish is “the event” that happened a the nunnery Rowan went to “school” at and brought her and Lady Jane closer together was never expanded on. It would have helped us readers learn more of how they became such great friends. Other than that I enjoyed this story.
