The Crimson Veil

Rate this book
LuyaweIn the kingdom of Damuna, I live my life in the shadow of my twin brother. However, while he rules the kingdom behind our fortified walls, I find myself driven by a dark obsession to hunt down the creature that terrorized our land years ago. When the Harvest Moon rises, marking a time of celebration, an unspeakable evil returns—an evil that once tore our family apart.

But this is no ordinary monster.

This is an enigmatic, seductive force whose power over me is as consuming as the red moon in the sky.

Drawn into a dangerous game of survival, passion, and magic, I’m faced with only two surrender to the dangerous desires he awakens inside me, or save my kingdom, my people, from certain destruction.

But he wants more than my body.

He craves my very soul.

In a world where the lines between good and evil blur, and love becomes a twisted, all-consuming force, I’m forced to navigate a landscape filled with treachery, betrayal, and a past that haunts my every step. The Crimson Veil has descended, and no one is safe.

And I cannot, must not, ever say his name.

A Hollow Read but still well written

The story had all the elements. The beautiful prose, a clear plot and compelling characters, but it just felt rather hollow. As though it were a beautifully decorated styrofoam cake. I never felt the chemistry between the leads and the story felt so disjointed but connected at the same time.

I know! I know! It was oxymoronic for me too!

In the final act was when it all started coming together, but by then it was too late for me to become too invested. A rarity for me with K Alex Walker books.

Everything was wrapped up in a neat little bow and we never got to see the battle. I was left most bereft. It was anticlimactic and left me wanting more, but not in a good way. It was more so, “this is it?”

Still, I gave it 3.5 stars, because of the writing is good, it’s K Alex Walker we’re talking about here and I did feel more into it in the third act, but it rings on the bottom of the list of books I’ve read for her.

Also, that beautiful cover brought up the rating.

Confused.p and Disappointed

This is an unusual place for me to be with with K.A.W. I usually always LOVE her books, not so this time. I was very confused for most of the book about what was going on. I have been reading more paranormal books lately, but the problem with some is they don't explain what is going on in their fantasy world. This is a short story with vague clarity on the storyline, premise, the villian/heros, and even the good sexy scenes. I don't even get what the MCs look like to imagine who and what you are dealing with. Disappointed that you don't really get MOST of the premise until the end, glazed over confusing sexy scenes and still confusion on the hate for at least one of the MCs. Potential, like a start of a rough first copy to the start of a decent story.

it’s an ok read

Tbh it was kinda slow and boring I just didn’t connect with the FMC and the MC magic man was confusing a little. It’s a short read that felt to rushed compared to Walkers other books.

PERFECTION

An African Folklore based retelling of Beauty of the Beast and this version is so much more compelling. Luyawe is bound by her duty to her kingdom and left confined by gender roles. All she wants is to shine in her light. By falling in love with the one deemed the most dangerous, she forces the Damuna to reconsider who they are willing to sacrifice, what they consider a threat, how to define love in a society centered on royalty and how women are viewed in this deeply patriarchal society. Filled with twists and turns, Walker crafts a beautifully written story of a love that can not be contained, controlled or prevented. This is perfection in words, filled with emotion on all sides (whether rooted in fear of the unknown or in love). The love between Luyawe and her Hiob is enough to make one cry. Oh, what a love. I pray we all love boldly and live authentically as they have ! 💓

I like this version of the fairytale better

Now this is a retelling that I truly enjoyed! You really can’t judge a book by its cover. Lu was a warrior princess. However, tradition, culture, expectation and duty kept her bound. Being the rebel that she was, it never sat well with her. She wanted to be free to be herself.
Theres nothing like an encounter with the forbidden that will make you feel alive. Hiob knew her in ways she didn’t know herself. Even ways that she discovered thanks to him. He didn’t have a problem reminding her. All she had to do was say his name.
I loved this read!

beautiful prose

Such a circumspect and beautiful story. Beautifully written, like poetry, filled with emotion, taunt with anticipation and over flowing with rich lore. I was skeptical of the premise but the execution is artful and intense and so sexy. I’m tied up in knots thinking about this complex praise and critique of tradition, the contradictions inherent in human nature, the power of our instincts to destroy and love, and recognition of love (even when it’s shrouded in violence and control). This is a masterpiece and I wish I could read it again for the first time. K. Alex killed it. I hope she had fun writing it. I devoured it.

I finished all 20 chapters in one day, I’ll say that the end had me crying all mf**n night. 😭 The book really begins at the end of chapter 3, and it gets better and better. The characters can get a bit confusing at times but you’ll start to piece it together after awhile. If you love a good book of hopeless romantics defying their traditions, norms, and customs for the sake of love mixed with a bit of fantasy then this book is certainly for you!

Loving The Beast

My heart hurts for Hiob, no one should live in isolation, no one to talk to…it’s like Tarzan ‘s story in a way.
Anyway, imagine you finally found someone and starting a family and that being taken away from you !? All because they see you as a beast, as an It not human.?!
Well, that’s all i am saying.
Let Princess Luyawe & Hiob take you to their journey of Love , hurdles… and their HEA.

Wow! Great Book

I don't know why I bypassed this book for as long as I did but I am glad that I finally read it, this was an interesting book. People fear the unknown and are afraid of what they deem to be different instead of trying to learn or understand the difference between them.
I was glad that although Hiob was in fact different, those who were afraid learned that lies can and will manifest those fears. Well Done Ms. Walker!!

So well done

This is a beautifully well written plot. Luyawe and Hiob were intriguing characters and even with the clipped scenes (mainly because i wished this was a full novel), watching them come together still felt genuine. Oh, and the artwork!!!! 😲😲😲 GORGEOUS. All in all another Walker banger.

Retelling based in African Folklore

This latest addition to the Myths, Legends, and Monsters series by K. Alex Walker was very engaging. Although it’s billed as a retelling, it was very fresh, and original. Other than the use of two recognizable names from a fairytale, all the other elements were unique and compelling.

these characters needed more time

I like the ideas and characters in this story, it just often felt like scenes or pieces were missing. Sometimes while reading, I would think I missed something or accidentally skipped a paragraph. It felt like we were running through the story without enough time to explain how we got from point a to point b.

3.5 stars. I’m glad I picked this back up. The confusion I felt in the beginning was worth it when pieces began to be revealed and fall into place. Beautifully handled prose and I enjoyed the family conflict, the family dynamics, the romance and the way it ended. I got to the end and was very happy I read it.

The lull of the ocean

That’s how this book read. There was a push and pull over understanding, things revealing themselves in such a clarifying fashion that I felt shocked by every twist. Around 20% I felt lost at sea but land found me and what a beautiful sight it was. Love this story, it’s the perfect length, and carries you through a series of emotions ending in satisfaction.

This was so beautiful ❤️

Hiob and Luw's story had me hooked from the beginning. It's one of the best books I've read so far this year. There was so much wisdom and depth; things were not always what they seemed. Beautifully written and worthy of a being re read.

Interesting reading

Due to the outline of the story it took awhile to comprehend what was now from what was then where the timeline was concerned.

Very confusing but it still held my interest. It helped that it was a short read. I wouldn’t mind reading more from this author

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wanna cry this was so good! I loved the storyline so much and I wish it was longer. I wanted an epilogue years later with Hans and Gretel older. This was a beautiful love story facing the judgements and ignorance of others. K. Alex Walker, you made another masterpiece!
