Rate this book
This DSM-5-TR reference study guide by the Davidson's, is an indispensable resource for mental health professionals who are integrating the study of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision into their busy schedules. This book is perfectly suited for those looking to maximize their time while commuting, exercising, or engaging in other daily activities. It provides an in-depth exploration of the significant updates featured in the DSM-5-TR, including the introduction of new disorders and extensive revisions to existing diagnostic criteria.

The guide's format is particularly effective for this dense material, using the natural properties of sound—energy, frequency, and vibration—to enhance cognitive retention and facilitate easier recall of complex information. This sound education approach helps clinicians grasp and retain the nuances of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment more effectively than traditional study methods.

Additionally, the book delves into how these revisions impact clinical practice, offering practical advice on applying the updated criteria in various therapeutic settings. It not only supports seasoned practitioners in refreshing their knowledge but also assists new clinicians in building a solid foundation in psychiatric diagnostic skills. By the end of this comprehensive guide, the Davidson's believe that readers will be well-equipped to apply the DSM-5-TR’s guidelines with confidence and precision in their professional roles.

This is a very useful guide to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR, 2022). The book is the diagnostic tool of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and mental health professionals and students need to have a strong understanding of it. Samuel and Rebecca Davidson’s study guide is highly accessible. I recommend going to chapter 19 first, reviewing the questions and answers section, as retrieval-based education has been proven to be the most effective learning method.

One of the biggest forms of assistance that Davidson's study guide provides is referencing the many acronyms for disorders. The mental health and medical fields are filled with unnecessary initialisms and acronyms, with the same combination of letters sometimes referring to different conditions, techniques, and organizations. While acronyms make documentation slightly easier, they often screw up communication and slow down work. But they are here to say. Here are some examples of acronyms and initialisms that mean multiple things in the mental health and medical field:
“SA” for substance abuse, sexual assault, and suicide attempt;
“ASD” for acute stress disorder and autism spectrum disorder;
"MI" for mental illness, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and motivational interviewing;
“ED” for eating disorder, erectile disorder, emotional disturbance, and erectile dysfunction;
“SAD” for Seasonal Affective Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder;
“SUD” for substance use disorders and subjective units of distress;
“BPD” for brief psychotic disorder and borderline personality disorder;
“NCD” for neurocognitive disorders and noncommunicable diseases;
"MS" for multiple sclerosis, mental status, and mitral stenosis;
“TIC” for tachycardia, inattention, and confusion, and transient ischemic attack;
“NBM” for no bowel movement, normal bowel movement, and nothing by mouth;
“ID” for Intellectual Disability, Infectious Disease, intradermal, identity, and infant of a diabetic mother;
“BD” for Bipolar Disorder, Behavioral Disorder, twice a day (medication administration), and birth date;
“IED” for Intermittent explosive disorder and Infectious Eczematoid Dermatitis;
“EDS” for episodic dyscontrol syndrome (same thing as Intermittent explosive disorder) and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
