BOOK

A chilling debut novel by the author of acclaimed non-fiction works, including High Royds Hospital and Meanwood Park Hospital.

George thought his past was buried—until the call came.
His mother, locked away in Wakehurst Psychiatric Hospital, had died.

Eighteen years had passed since he left his hometown of Whitefish, Minnesota. Eighteen years he had left her to rot in his memory. But when a friend insists he returns for the funeral, George steps back into a town populated by familiar faces he’d hoped never to see again.

As George digs into the truth behind his mother’s death, he uncovers something far darker than he ever imagined—a sinister force that has been waiting for him to come home.

‘If this was, in fact, a dream , it wasn’t the most unusual one she had encountered since being committed , and all things considered, it was perhaps the most ordinary’

Just a little titbit to nom on while deciding to get this book (side note YOU absolutely should!)

The Lonely Place

Invested is an understatement! First of three books second one in beta process as we speak !!! Ok back to it .
The character development was great your given snippets of how the inner workings of George’s mind ticks , the love heat relationship that the village has with its close neighbours. One that no one talks about but they all know exactly what’s going on .
Our man is George emotionally detached, damaged, psychologically stilted with a lot to do with his father how things in his life were handled .

Sometimes what you wish for you learn is not right for you at all and you fight back on the unfamiliar.

This is partly the problem with George .but as he is brought back to where his nightmares have a heartbeat and everything is so fuzzy he questions things .
Enter Harold the village grandpa and the owner /manager of the only b&b for miles .
George has his own agenda and timeline to get in and get back out as quickly as possible but bonds are made and plans change .

The books world building the description of areas and things are very submersive and you can clearly picture what he is looking at and it feeling in that moment .

can George see past his personal alarms and biases and make his mothers funeral a better arrangement than when Alive. With the hospital hiding information how far will George go to uncover the truth of his mother .

Trigger warnings to consider before you pick this up this list is either used quite loosely or referred to at certain points .

Self Harm
Child Abduction
Mental Disability
Post Natal Depression
Suicidal ideation
Schizophrenia
Hallucinations
Auditory Hallucinations
Gun use

When reading this I found it really helpful that the pages are broke. Up in to numbered sections so you could be reading and know your on section 9 of page 14 I thought this was great especially if you have fallen asleep and last thing you remember is the number on section it makes it easier to find .

The pacing and detail of this wonderful quite easy to visualise things and it’s not slow that it is so detail heavy you loose interest the balance is very thought out .
The lonely Place for me is definitely a book that even now weeks later I have scenes playing back in my head questioning my own take on it , that to me makes a book incredible .

There are dream sequences so you do bounce back and forth a bit but it is in context of the writing .

This truly a grand slam intro to thriller writing . World built around you has you wanting more questions answered .loved §0“?ma

I was very kindly gifted this book.
Even though it did take me a while to get into this book I was kinda hooked to it. There was a lot I didn’t see coming and the ending really shocked me. I did feel like at parts the book dragged on a little and some bits were not needed. Good character development, and really good writing overall. Looking forward to reading the second book.

Absolutely fantastic book!! The writing style is fantastic and easy to follow, the story line drags you in from the very beginning and the characters are relatable.

I was hooked instantly and couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next one in the series!!!!!!
