Sometimes the friendliest smiles can hold the deadliest secrets...The Neighbor is a pulse pounding psychological thriller by the bestselling author of Everybody Ain't Your Friend and The Quiet Ones series.
At just 24, Trey is ahead of the game. He’s the first in his crew to buy his own home, leaving behind his mother’s house and stepping into independence. To celebrate, he’s hosting a housewarming party—a chance to show off his new place, reconnect with friends, and mark the beginning of his fresh start.
But life in his new neighborhood isn’t as perfect as it seems.
Enter Mrs. Pearl—a charming, elegant woman with a magnetic personality and a smile that hides more than it reveals. At 64, she’s the kind of neighbor who knows everyone’s business and doesn’t hesitate to get involved. From the moment Trey moves in, Mrs. Pearl’s warmth and attention seem harmless—at first. But as she begins showing up unannounced, offering unsolicited advice, and asking questions that cut too deep, Trey starts to feel uneasy.
What begins as neighborly kindness takes a darker turn when Mrs. Pearl’s interest in Trey becomes more personal—and obsessive. As her seemingly innocent gestures escalate into something far more sinister, Trey finds himself trapped in a web of charm, manipulation, and secrets that threaten to unravel his new life.
In this gripping tale of suspense and psychological tension, Trey must navigate the fine line between neighborly kindness and dangerous obsession… before it’s too late.
A pulse-pounding drama full of twists and turns. This series is fast-paced, straight to the point, and packs a powerful punch that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The Red Series is composed of self-contained stories – they can be read in any order.
Very entertaining read and The Red Series has yet to disappoint me! Mrs. Pearl was a total menace & it was evident she was not wrapped too tight from early on, but her diabolical ways showed more and more as the story unfolded. I was definitely rooting for Trey throughout this book although he annoyed me at times, by not always using his common sense. I enjoyed seeing a young black man being “ahead of the game” and farther in life than most his age, at the age of 24. The highlight of how much his mom sacrificed for him, was a great addition to the story. It wouldn’t be a Tanisha book if it didn’t have a twist, and it definitely had a couple of jaw-dropping & shocking moments to occur. Overall, a great read that I would highly recommend.
Mrs. Pearl was crazy af. I feel like there were soo many signs that something wasn’t right with her that Trey ignored. The saying, “always trust your gut” is very true and would have help all of them avoid a lot of what they went through.
This was an okay read overall. Tanisha Stewart continues The Red Series with The Neighbor, which had some engaging moments but ultimately left me with more questions than answers.
The story follows the twisted obsession Mrs. Pearl has with Trey and his girlfriend Simone, along with the chaos that unfolds when she drags multiple people into her disturbing plans. Stewart does create some suspenseful and dramatic scenes that kept me engaged for the most part, and the thriller elements woven throughout the story had their moments. However, the execution fell short in several areas. Some parts of the book seem lacking while other parts drag on more than seemed necessary, creating uneven pacing throughout. There are quite a few unanswered questions that left me confused about character motivations. Mrs. Pearl’s obsession with Trey was particularly puzzling - the dynamic between them started as this confusing lustful connection, then shifted to something more like a mother-son relationship later on. I couldn’t quite understand what was driving her fixation on him specifically.
I also wasn’t sure why Dante, Trey’s male best friend, had to get dragged into the situation, or what Mrs. Pearl’s actual plans were for kidnapping everyone and keeping them in her basement. The reveal about her history with Simone - being connected as the grandchild of her husband’s love child with his secretary - provided some context, but I still don’t understand why she decided to take all her anger out on Simone, who was two generations removed from the original situation. It felt like misplaced rage that needed more development to make sense.
Then there’s the ending with Mrs. Pearl escaping to Venezuela with Bill, her plumber. The relationship briskly developed from professional to romantic to engaged in one of the last scene reveals, which felt incomplete and rushed. There needed to be more buildup to make that connection believable. All in all, it was a decent read and continuation of The Red Series. The thrills and drama did keep me engaged in the book for the most part, but the unanswered questions and uneven development of certain plot points and relationships kept it from being something more compelling.
The Neighbor for me not wanting to speak to anyone. Mrs. Pearl just kept inserting herself like an overbearing granny. This book had so many twist and turns but all of my questions (I had several) while reading this book was addressed. I was thinking one thing and was completely wrong!!!!!!
If you are looking for a fast paced thriller then this may be the book for you!
-entertaining predictability -8/10 audiobook packed with “chilling” sounds -friendship/men bonds -an unhinged, multilayered neighbor -past vs present storyline -cheating trope -“Ma” movie vibes -no epilogue but a fully flushed story
My favorite part of this storyline was the friendship between the MMC and his best friend. Their bond gave mild comedic relief & relatability that flowed well alongside the thrilling chaos.
If you are new to thrillers or scare easily then this is a book that I would recommend! It’s perfect for beginner thriller readers.
This was a fun read & my second from the Red Series thus far. Although this wasn’t my favorite of the two, I’m excited to read the next one.
I absolutely love Tanisha Stewart’s writing style. This novel had several twists and turns. I thought I figured it out, but I was absolutely wrong! I didn’t see the end, ending this way. Very good!
This book was taking me on a ride … I was getting frustrated with how dense some of the characters was acting and it felt like we would never get to the real reason why Mrs. Pearl is acting the way she is but once we got there, I was shocked!
We all love a friendly neighbor but, what happens when they don’t take a hint? Mrs. Pearl done lost her marbles. This thriller was a stressful read that kept me tuned in. Between naivety, obsession, delusion and unwavering pestering, ‘The neighbor’ is bound to give you a headache!!
The old lady next door was out there. Waay out there...Unless I missed something in the plot, some of the points in the story did not connect completely.
🌟 4/5 – Unhinged Auntie Vibes, Gaslight Galore, and a Side of Cinnamon Spice 🌟
💭 My Thoughts:
Babyyyyy, listen. This book right here? Gave exactly what it was supposed to give. The Neighbor had me side-eyeing the sweet old ladies on my block like what you got going on behind those sheer curtains, ma’am?
Trey just got his first house—a fresh start, mortgage in his name, and nothing but dreams of peaceful suburban vibes. But peace? That’s cute. Too bad he moved in next to Mrs. Pearl: the neighborhood’s unofficial welcome committee with a banging pie recipe and a dangerously unhinged attachment style.
It starts off innocent enough. A little “welcome to the block” moment. But bestie, the way she slowly tightens her grip on Trey’s life? Chile. The secondhand tension had me screaming at the pages.
“If you need anything—anything at all—you just let me know.” —Mrs. Pearl, giving thriller villain in pearls realness
⸻
🍰 What Worked:
✨ Black Boy Joy Meets Black Boy Terror Trey is such a refreshing lead. Smart, grounded, got his finances in order, and emotionally mature? We love that for him. And the friendship between him and Dante? Chef’s kiss. Black male vulnerability and brotherhood done RIGHT.
✨ Mrs. Pearl Is Giving Lifetime Movie + Fatal Attraction She’s elegant, spiritual, sultry, and manipulative as hell. A soft-voiced menace. At first you think she’s just lonely. But baby, when I tell you she is COOKED? She takes “nosy neighbor” to a whole new genre.
“She’s fast, that one. Loose. Nothing like the women in my day.” —Mrs. Pearl, talking spicy about Trey’s girlfriend 👀
✨ Suburban Sundown Town Energy Trey’s first interaction in his new neighborhood is with a white woman who assumes he’s lost or renting—because surely a young Black man couldn’t afford to own a home on her block. The racial tension is quiet but persistent, adding an extra layer of unease throughout.
“Something about her stillness makes Trey’s skin prickle… her smile never wavers.”
⸻
👀 Final Take:
This one is for my girlies (and guys) who love: • Creepy neighbor chaos • Messy older women with secrets and stilettos • That slow-burn-to-what-the-hell-just-happened energy
It starts off quiet and cozy, then flips the switch real quick. If Verity, Get Out, and a 90s urban suspense flick had a baby, The Neighbor would be it.
Would I recommend?
YES ma’am. Read it. Then call your mama and tell her to be careful who she shares her peach cobbler recipe with. 😭
From the very first page, Tanisha Stewart’s 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐫 grabs ahold of you and doesn’t let go. There’s this subtle, ominous feeling from the very first scene. While things appear light and ordinary, you can feel that something disturbing is smoldering just beneath the surface.
We meet Trey, a 24-year-old who is finally stepping out on his own. But if ignoring red flags were a sport, Trey would take home the gold. Seriously! Mrs. Pearl was throwing out all kinds of weirdo energy from the jump, and yet, Trey kept giving her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it’s his age, or maybe it’s how his mom babied him growing up... but wow! I spent most of the book laughing and yelling at this man through the pages. Where is your survival instinct, sir?!
Now Mrs. Pearl... that woman is pure psychotic brilliance. She gives off major sweet-but-sinister vibes, and as the story progresses, her behavior shifts from odd to downright chilling. And just when I thought I had her figured out…bam! Chapter 39 hit me with a twist I did not see coming. And Chapter 40…my goodness! I have some questions y’all. How does Tanisha Stewart come up with this stuff?! My jaw dropped and I was completely blown away.
What I loved most was how everything came together so perfectly in the end. The story drops breadcrumbs throughout, and by the final chapters, you realize Tanisha had been leading us to the jaw dropping moments the entire time. It’s clever, it’s creepy, and it’s so real, and that is what makes it even scarier! This book has me side-eyeing every sweet old lady on my block…how am I supposed to trust my lovely elderly neighbors now?!
This was a quick, engaging read that gave me the thriller fix I needed. I’m officially hooked on 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 and I cannot wait for 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫. Tanisha Stewart has me on edge in the best way possible!
before i start i want to give a huge thank you to @tanishastewart_author for sending me an ARC of The Neighbor! 🙌🏾 i feel so lucky to have read this early because whew—this book had me hooked from the first page! i finished this yesterday and im still thinking about everybody in that book😭 HAPPY RELEASE DAYY🥰
✩₊˚.⋆🕸️⋆⁺₊✧𝙳𝚎𝚜𝚌𝚛𝚒𝚙𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗: the story revolves around Trey, he’s 24 and he’s leaving behind his mothers house to step into some independence,to celebrate he’s hosting housewarming party—a chance to show off his new place, reconnect with some friends, celebrate his fresh start. ✩₊˚.⋆🕸️⋆⁺₊✧ 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝’𝚜 𝙼𝚢 𝚁𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐?:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
✩₊˚.⋆🕸️⋆⁺₊✧ 𝙴𝚡𝚝𝚛𝚊 𝙸𝚗𝚏𝚘: this was a gripping, twisty ride full of suspense, secrets, and so many moments that had me gasping out loud. i couldn’t put it down, my kindle was glued to my hand. every chapter was sooo good, the characters was good, the plot…the secrets? whew chile. the characters felt real, the pacing was on point, and the way the tension built up? chefs kiss.
Whew, Miss Pearl was a whole mess! She had me yelling at the book like, “Girl, sit down somewhere!” Always popping up where she didn’t belong—absolutely got on my last nerve. And don’t even get me started on Tre… how can someone be that blind? His girlfriend and best friend were practically screaming for help the whole time, and he was just clueless. 😩
Despite all the chaos, this book was such a wild ride. Twists on top of twists, and just when I thought I had it figured out—boom, something else happened. Tanisha Stewart really knows how to keep you hooked. If you’re into thrillers that make you yell at the characters and keep you flipping pages late into the night, this one’s for you!
This was a short and twisty read that proves sometimes the biggest threat isn’t down the street—it’s right next door and her name is Pearl. Whew! She was something!😳 Trey was just trying to enjoy his new home and fresh start... until *the neighbor* decided she wanted a little more than small talk 👀.
Tanisha Stewart delivers a fast-paced psychological thriller that grabs you early and doesn’t let go. The tension builds quick, and I definitely didn’t see the connection between them. When the dots finally connected.... (mouth open)
I love how the ending left space for healing and closure. If you love short thrillers with just the right amount of drama, suspense, and crazy you never saw coming, add this to your TBR.
Trey moves into his new home and is quickly rescued from an overly inquisitive neighbor by the friendly Ms. Pearl next door. At first, she seems like a sweet and harmless older woman, but Trey soon begins to notice unsettling changes—especially in Ms. Pearl’s behavior. As the story unfolds, Trey, his best friend Dante, and his girlfriend Simone find themselves caught in a terrifying, life-or-death situation. If they want to survive, they’ll have to outwit someone far more dangerous than they ever imagined. Ms. Pearl is definitely not what she appears to be.
I love how Tanisha masterfully weaves in rich backstories that help readers understand how her characters become who they are.
Trey is fortunate enough to be able to purchase a home in a pretty nice area. He meets his neighbor Mrs.Pearl during an awkward encounter. She makes herself appear to be an ally. She’s a charismatic, sensible, mature, older woman. Unfortunately, very quickly the vibe begins to change. He has found himself in a bit of a sticky situation. Trey puts too much faith into the notion that this woman is completely harmless. Even though her behavior suggests something different.
I like the flow of the novel. Even after the climatic events happen, there is a resolution. In conclusion, never underestimate your neighbor because it could be deadly👀.
Whew! The Neighbor is another wild ride in the Red Series lineup—and let me just say, Ms. Pearl does not come to play. Ruthless doesn’t even begin to describe her! If JR Mason’s “How To” ever needed a street-smart survival guide and Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Neighbors from Hell” had a spin-off, this would be the lovechild.
This story had me locked in from the first chapter. The suspense creeps in slow and then bam!—you’re in the middle of chaos, mess, and a neighbor you wish had moved far, far away. The plot twists? Disrespectfully good.
Ms. Pearl needs her own warning label. Red Series, you’ve done it again! Can’t wait for the next installment!
Ms. Pearly was truly off her rocker because… ma’am, what were you doing?! 😅 She put everyone through all of that. I won’t say too much, but this book is definitely a reminder that we need to stop putting our personal business on social media.
I was a little confused by a couple of moments—either I missed something, or the explanation just wasn’t clear. The author dropped the twist, but left out details that would’ve helped connect how it even came together. This happened twice, which pulled me out of the story a bit.
That said, I really enjoyed the audio production. The sound effects added a lot to the experience. I just wish there had been an actual female narrator for the female characters, since Ms. Pearly and Simone’s voices weren’t distinct enough.
I really don’t think I could ever get enough of this red book series. Although each story makes me more and more paranoid about the people around me.. It doesn’t prevent me from diving into the lives of the insane.
It’s one thing to have a deranged detached from reality individual but a skillful strategic calculated crazy person is a force of its own…and Trey was not ready to fuck around and find out.
This story warms your heart in the beginning seeing a young man purchase his first home and embark on a life of mature responsibility and foundational relationships until he meets Pearl with her warm apple pie.
Download and purchase this book it is a page turner.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 STARS This was a quick little rollercoaster and I LOVED every second of it! The Neighbor by Tanisha Stewart was fast paced, wild, and wildly entertaining. Miss Pearl?? GIRL. She was crazy as hell and I mean that in the most chaotic, can’t-look-away kind of way.
I’m a sucker for horror/thrillers where a group of friends have to team up, think fast, and survive and this one gave me exactly what I wanted. Twists, tension, and just enough crazy to keep me flipping pages like my life depended on it.
One of my favorites by Tanisha Stewart hands down. If you want a short and thrilling ride, add this to your TBR immediately. Love, love, love!
New house, fresh start… and a neighbor who’s doing a little too much. The Neighbor is a quick, tension-filled psychological thriller that plays with trust, boundaries, and the idea that friendliness isn’t always harmless. It’s about how easily comfort can turn into unease and why listening to your gut matters. ••••• Tanisha Stewart simply doesn’t miss. How she is able to take me through every emotion known to man in less than 200 pages is insane. Just when you think you have it all figured out, she thumps you in the back of the neck. Still making my way through her “Red Series,” but it has been absolutely worth it. Highly recommend!
This one might be my least favorite in the Red Series but I stayed the course. The premise was strong but the execution felt slower than the others and the tension didn’t quite grip me the same way. At times the story dragged and I kept waiting for that signature Red Series punch to fully land.
That said, Mrs. Pearl was unsettling in her own way. She gave very much Ma vibes overly friendly, intrusive and just off enough to keep your guard up. While it didn’t deliver the nonstop twists I’ve come to expect from this series it still fits the theme of smiling faces hiding dangerous intentions.
Not my favorite ride but still a reminder that in this series no one is ever just the nice neighbor.

Book: The Neighbor by Tanisha Stewart Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I started this book yesterday and couldn’t put it down! The Neighbor is a psychological thriller that had me engaged from beginning to end. It gave me total Lifetime movie vibes, in the best possible way. Suspense, drama, and sharp twists kept me flipping pages, needing to know what would happen next.
Tanisha Stewart delivers a fast-paced, addictive read that fans of psychological thrillers will absolutely enjoy.
This book was hilariously creepy. I was cracking up, but also concerned and wondering “WTF is going on?’ after each chapter. I thought the storyline was going in a completely different direction, that is until Mrs. Pearl stepped in. Trey, the new neighbor on the block, definitely experienced a fair share of gaslighting and manipulation throughout this whole book.. But he had some ride or dies with him along the way (Dante and Simone).I enjoyed this fast paced psych thriller. Could’ve ate it up in once sitting, but responsibilities. Anyways, go ahead and read this!
I had no idea what to expect with The Neighbor because I didn’t read the description. The series has been so good I’m reading whatever comes next, no questions asked or research needed. One character had trouble noticing glaring red flags, which made this a thrilling, suspenseful read. I’ll never forget Mrs. Pearl and how hard she tried to be a good neighbor. Some didn’t appreciate her efforts, but she tried nonetheless, lol. This is a must read for thriller lovers.
A 24 year old black man buys his first home and his neighbor- Mrs Pearl, who is old enough to be his grandmother, becomes quickly and dangerously obsessed with him. The book moves quickly, chapters are short, the characters are good and relatable. There are a few things that happen that most young people today would consider out of control behavior and would definitely ask more questions of Mrs Pearl. Some of the twists you see coming and others are not that explosive. Its a quick read and somewhat entertaining. I recommend reading with your eyes, not your ears.
I just right in not even knowing what this book was about. It took me on a ride…that’s for sure!
Mrs. Pearl, Mrs. Pearl… smh! She’s a fiesty, ol cougar! Not only was she batshit crazy but she knew exactly how to play on those young men’s emotions to get what she wanted. I wanted to hate her but after everything she went through, I get it.
Make sure y’all check out this banger from Tanisha Stewart.
Mrs Pearl Mrs Pearl!! Trey did not know what he was getting himself into! This thriller had me going through the pages just to see what was going to happen next. I knew Mrs Pearl was a little off but the reasoning for what she did to Trey, Simone, & Dante was a shocker. The author gave a background of what happened in Mrs Pearl’s earlier life & my heart broke a little for her.
If you’re looking for a book to keep you on your toes this is a great one.
